  • The dynamic response of the head arm assembly (HAA) of a hard disk drive to an impact load was obtained from a 3D non-linear finite element model using ANSYS/LS-DYNA and from experiments using a modified levitation mass method (LMM). In the finite element model, the impact load was created by modeling the mass as a rigid body and making it collide with the HAA. The velocity, displacement, acceleration, and inertial force of the mass were then obtained from the time history data of the finite element analysis. In the LMM, a mass that was levitated with an aerostatic linear bearing, and hence encountered negligible friction, was made to collide with the actuator arm, resulting in a dynamic bending test for the arm. During the collision, the Doppler frequency shift of the laser beam reflected from the mass was accurately measured with an optical interferometer. The velocity, displacement, acceleration, and inertial force of the mass were accurately calculated from the measured time-varying Doppler frequency shift. A good correlation between the experimental data and FEA results was observed. The FEA was also used to investigate the dynamic response of the HAA to impact by different masses.

  • By integrating an active tuned mass damper (ATMD) and an inerter, the ATMDI has been proposed to attenuate undesirable oscillations of structures under the ground acceleration. Employing the mode generalized system, the dynamic magnification factors (DMF) of the structure-ATMDI system are formulated. The criterion can then be defined as the minimization of maximum values of the DMF of the controlled structure for optimum searching. By resorting to the defined criterion and the particle swarm optimization (PSO), the effects of varying the crucial parameters on the performance of ATMDI have been scrutinized in order to probe into its superiority. Furthermore, the results of both ATMD and tuned mass dampers inerter (TMDI) are included into consideration for comparing. Results corroborate that the ATMDI outperforms both ATMD and TMDI in terms of the effectiveness and robustness. Especially, the ATMDI may greatly reduce the demand on both the mass ratio and inerter mass ratio, thus being capable of further miniaturizing both the ATMD and TMDI. Likewise the miniaturized ATMDI still keeps nearly the same stroke as the TMDI with a larger mass ratio. Hence, the ATMDI is deemed to be a high performance control device with the miniaturization and suitable for super-tall buildings.

  • To accelerate a launch mass with a low level of pressure as possible in a railgun, it is required to hold supplied current nearly constant during launch phase. We obtained the discharging conditions for required current shaping by modeling and analysis of circuit equations coupled to acceleration equation of the launch mass. The acceleration characteristics of the railgun in the conditions were analyzed by comparing experimental and theoretical results.

  • The effects of vertical component of earthquakes on torsional amplification due to mass eccentricity in seismic responses of base-isolated structures subjected to near-field ground motions are studied in this paper. 3-, 6- and 9-story superstructures and aspect ratios of 1, 2 and 3 have been modeled as steel special moment frames mounted on Triple Concave Friction Pendulum (TCFP) bearings considering different period and damping ratios. Three-dimensional linear superstructures resting on nonlinear isolators are subjected to both 2 and 3 component near-field ground motions. Effects of mass eccentricity and vertical component of 25 near-field earthquakes on the seismic responses including maximum isolator displacement and base shear as well as peak superstructure acceleration are studied. The results indicate that the effect of vertical component on the responses of asymmetric structures, especially on the base shear is significant. Therefore, it can be claimed that in the absence of the vertical component, mass eccentricity has a little effect on the base shear increase. Additionally, the impact of this component on acceleration is remarkable so the roof acceleration of a nine-story structure has been increased 1.67 times, compared to the case that the structure is subjected to only horizontal components of earthquakes.

  • The purpose of this study is to reduce seismic responses of an actual nuclear piping system using a tuned mass damper (TMD) device. A numerical piping model was developed and validated based on shaking table test results with actual nuclear piping. A TMD for nuclear piping was newly devised in this work. A TMD shape design suitable for nuclear piping systems was conducted, and its operating performance was verified after manufacturing. The response reduction performance of the developed TMD under earthquake loading on actual piping was investigated. Results confirmed that, on average, seismic response reduction rates of 34% in the maximum acceleration response, 41% in the root mean square acceleration response, and 57% in the spectral acceleration response were shown through the TMD application. This developed TMD operated successfully within the seismic response reduction rate of existing TMD optimum design values. Therefore, the developed TMD and dynamic interpretation help improve the nuclear piping's seismic performance.

  • Modern tall buildings are subject to wind induced oscillations. Those oscillations can cause discomfort to the occupants. To control these motions, tuned mass dampers have been used. In this paper, component node synthesis, based on Lagrange multipliers formulation. is applied to the along-wind motion of tall buildings with multiple tuned mass dampers. Spectral densities of accelerations of top floor are compared by changing the numbers and locations of tuned mass dampers. It is found that multiple tuned mass dampers can be more effective than single tuned mass damper in reducing the acceleration response.

  • Active vibration control is generally used to reduce vibration level by the actuators based on measured signal. Dynamic properties of a structure can be easily modified by the active vibration control, so that the vibration level may be effectively reduced to the magnitude below the allowable limit over a wide frequency rangs. In this paper, an instantaneous optimal control algorithm including acceleration feedback is presented for the active vibration control of large structures considering facts that the acceleration response can be easily measured, but the displacement and velocity response are obtained by numerically integrating the measured acceleration response with some errors. The adverse effect of the time delay is overcomed by taking into account the dynamic characteristics of an actuator and filters in the design of controller. Performance test is carried out using a hydraulic active mass driver on a test structure$(L{\times}W{\times}H;=;1200mm{\times}800mm{\times}1600mm, about;500kg)$ supported by four columns under base excitations. It is confirmed that the vibration level of the test structure are reduced to about 1/6 near resonance.

  • Mechanical systems installed in transport devices, such as vehicles, airplanes, and ships, are mostly subject to translational accelerations at the joints during operations. This base acceleration excitation has a large influence on the performance of the system, therefore, its response must be well analyzed. However, the existing methods for dynamic analysis of structures have some limitations in use. This study presents a new numerical method using relative acceleration to solve these limitations. If the governing equation of motion is linear and the mass matrix, the damping matrix, and the stiffness matrix are constant over time in the finite element analysis, the proposed method can be applied to the transient behavior analysis and the harmonic response analysis of the structure. Because it is not necessary to introduce a virtual mass and the rigid body motions are removed from the analysis, it is possible to use not only the direct integration method in the time domain but also the mode superposition method to obtain the dynamic responses. This paper demonstrates with three examples how the present method is suitable for the dynamic analysis of a structure with multi-degree of freedom.
