One of the most reliable and simplest tools for structural vibration control in civil engineering is Tuned Mass Damper, TMD. Provided that the frequency and damping parameters of these dampers are tuned appropriately, they can reduce the vibrations of the structure through their generated inertia forces, as they vibrate continuously. To achieve the optimal parameters of TMD, many different methods have been provided so far. In old approaches, some formulas have been offered based on simplifying models and their applied loadings while novel procedures need to model structures completely in order to obtain TMD parameters. In this paper, with regard to the nonlinear decision-making of fuzzy systems and their enough ability to cope with different unreliability, a method is proposed. Furthermore, by taking advantage of both old and new methods a fuzzy system is designed to be operational and reduce uncertainties related to models and applied loads. To design fuzzy system, it is required to gain data on structures and optimum parameters of TMDs corresponding to these structures. This information is obtained through modeling MDOF systems with various numbers of stories subjected to far and near field earthquakes. The design of the fuzzy systems is performed by three methods: look-up table, the data space grid-partitioning, and clustering. After that, rule weights of Mamdani fuzzy system using the look-up table are optimized through genetic algorithm and rule weights of Sugeno fuzzy system designed based on grid-partitioning methods and clustering data are optimized through ANFIS (Adaptive Neuro-Fuzzy Inference System). By comparing these methods, it is observed that the fuzzy system technique based on data clustering has an efficient function to predict the optimal parameters of TMDs. In this method, average of errors in estimating frequency and damping ratio is close to zero. Also, standard deviation of frequency errors and damping ratio errors decrease by 78% and 4.1% respectively in comparison with the look-up table method. While, this reductions compared to the grid partitioning method are 2.2% and 1.8% respectively. In this research, TMD parameters are estimated for a 15-degree of freedom structure based on designed fuzzy system and are compared to parameters obtained from the genetic algorithm and empirical relations. The progress up to 1.9% and 2% under far-field earthquakes and 0.4% and 2.2% under near-field earthquakes is obtained in decreasing respectively roof maximum displacement and its RMS ratio through fuzzy system method compared to those obtained by empirical relations.

In the design of a rotor shaft, care should be taken to minimize vibration by taking into account the sources of vibration. In addition, the intensity critical speed, stability, and other related aspects of the system must be considered. especially when it is operated at a critical speed, it is important to address issues related to vibration, as an increase in the whirling response of the rotor shaft can cause damage to the shaft, destruction of the rotor parts, and detrimental abrasions on the bearings. In this thesis, the vibration characteristics of a rotor shaft are investigated through the use of the finite element method. Variations of the diameters and lengths were used to determine the effect of a rotor shaft using Beam No.188(3D linear strain beam) in ANSYS version 11.0 as a universal interpretation program for finite elements. Special care was taken to prevent excessive vibration, which can result from resonance at the initial stage, in the formulation of a dynamic design for a rotor shaft through calculations while changing the diameters and the lengths of the shaft. Moreover, the dynamic characteristics of the critical speed, total mass, D/L(diameter to length) ratio, and natural frequency were verified. Furthermore, the rotor shaft applied by bearing element was calculated and compared by using Combi No. 214(2-D spring-damper bearing).
In the past decades, much effort has been made towards the study of single-mode-based vibration controls with dynamic energy absorbers such as single or multiple Tuned Mass Dampers(TMDs). With the increase of bridge span length and the tendency of the bridge cross-section being more slender and streamlined, multi-mode coupled vibrations as well as their controls have become very important for large bridges susceptible to strong winds. As a simple but effective device, the TMD system especially the semi-active one has become a promising option for such coupled vibration controls. However, despite various studies of optimal controls of single-mode-based vibrations with TMDs, research on the corresponding controls of the multi-mode coupled vibrations is very rare so far. For the development of a semi-active control strategy to suppress the multi-mode coupled vibrations, a comprehensive parametric analysis on the optimal variables of this control is substantial. In the present study, a multi-mode control strategy named "three-row" TMD system is discussed and the general numerical equations are developed at first. Then a parametric study on the optimal control variables for the "three-row" TMD system is conducted for a prototype Humen Suspension Bridge, through which some useful information and a better understanding of the optimal control variables to suppress the coupled vibrations are obtained. This information lays a foundation for the design of semi-active control.
Earlier numerous studies have been done on implementation of Tuned Liquid Damper (TLD) for structural vibration control by many researchers. As per current review there is no significant study on a sloped bottom TLD. TLD's are passive devices. A TLD is a tank rigidly attached to the structure and filled partially by liquid. When fundamental linear sloshing frequency is tuned to structure's natural frequency large sloshing amplitude is expected. In this study set of experiments are conducted on flat bottom and sloped bottom TLD at beach slope $20^{\circ}$, $30^{\circ}$ and $45^{\circ}$, for different types of structures, mass ratio, and depth ratio to investigate the overall effectiveness of TLD and specific effect of TLD parameters on structural response. This experimental study shows that a properly designed TLD reduces structural response. It is also observed that effectiveness of TLD increases with increase in mass ratio. In this experimental study an effectiveness of sloped bottom TLD with beach slope $30^{\circ}$ is investigated and compared with that of flat bottom TLD in reducing the structural response. It is observed from this study that efficiency of sloped bottom TLD in reducing the response of structure is more as compared to that of flat bottom TLD. It is shown that there is good agreement between numerical simulation of flat bottom and sloped bottom TLD and its experimental results. Also an attempt has been made to investigate the effectiveness of sloped bottom TLD with beach slope $20^{\circ}$ and $45^{\circ}$.
To effectively extract the vast wind resource, offshore wind turbines are designed with large rotor and slender tower, which makes them vulnerable to external vibration sources such as wind and wave loads. Substantial research efforts have been devoted to mitigate the unwanted vibrations of offshore wind turbines to ensure their serviceability and safety in the normal working condition. However, most previous studies investigated the vibration control of wind turbines in one direction only, i.e., either the out-of-plane or in-plane direction. In reality, wind turbines inevitably vibrate in both directions when they are subjected to the external excitations. The studies on both the in-plane and out-of-plane vibration control of wind turbines are, however, scarce. In the present study, the NREL 5 MW wind turbine is taken as an example, a detailed three-dimensional (3D) Finite Element (FE) model of the wind turbine is developed in ABAQUS. To simultaneously control the in-plane and out-of-plane vibrations induced by the combined wind and wave loads, another carefully designed (i.e., tuned) spring and dashpot are added to the perpendicular direction of each Tuned Mass Damper (TMD) system that is used to control the vibrations of the tower and blades in one particular direction. With this simple modification, a bi-directional TMD system is formed and the vibrations in both the out-of-plane and in-plane directions are simultaneously suppressed. To examine the control effectiveness, the responses of the wind turbine without control, with separate TMD system and the proposed bi-directional TMD system are calculated and compared. Numerical results show that the bi-directional TMD system can simultaneously control the out-of-plane and in-plane vibrations of the wind turbine without changing too much of the conventional design of the control system. The bi-directional control system therefore could be a cost-effective solution to mitigate the bi-directional vibrations of offshore wind turbines.

In this study, the possibility of vibration control of high-rise building structures by applying top-story isolation has been investigated. To this end, El Centro NS (1940) earthquake load is applied to 20- and 50-story building structures for numerical analysis. Artificial wind loads are used to evaluate the serviceability of example structures against wind vibration. As the number of isolated stories of example buildings is changed, structural responses has been evaluated to investigate optimal isolated building mass. And the natural period of isolation systems for top-story isolation is varied to investigate the improvement of control performance compared with the fixed base structure. Based on the analytical results, the top-story isolation system can be used as a hued mass damper and effectively reduce the structural responses of high-rise buildings against wind and seismic loads.

This paper presents a signal processing algorithm to control the dynamic bandwidth of a single-degree-of-freedom (SDF) dynamic sensor system. An accelerometer is a representative SDF sensor system. In this paper, a moire-fringe-based fiber optic accelerometer is newly used for the test of the algorithm. The accelerometer is composed of one mass, one damper and one spring as a SDF dynamic system. In order to increase the dynamic bandwidth of the accelerometer, it is needed to increase the spring constant or decrease the mass. However, there are mechanical difficulties of this adjustment. Therefore, the presented signal processing algorithm is very effective to overcome the difficulties because it is just adjustment in the signal processing software. In this paper, the novel fiber optic accelerometer is introduced shortly, and the algorithm is applied to the fiber optic accelerometer to control its natural frequency and damping ratio. Several simulations and experiments are carried out to prove the performance of the algorithm. As a result, it is shown that the presented signal processing algorithm is a good way to broaden the dynamic bandwidth of the fiber optic accelerometer.
Excessive vibrations induced by earthquake excitation and wind load are an obstacle in design and construction of tall and super tall buildings. An innovative vibration control structure system (Mega-Sub Controlled Structure System-MSCSS) was recently proposed to further improve humans comfort and their safeties during natural disasters. Preliminary investigations were performed using a two dimensional equivalent simplified model, composed by 3 mega-stories. In this paper, a more reasonable and realistic scaled model is design to investigate the dynamical characteristics and controlling performances of this structure when subjected to strong earthquake motion. The control parameters of the structure system, such as the modulated sub-structures disposition; the damping coefficient ratio (RC); the stiffness ratio (RD); the mass ratio of the mega-structure and sub-structure (RM) are investigated and their optimal values (matched values) are obtained. The MSCSS is also compared with the so-called Mega-Sub Structure (MSS) regarding their displacement and acceleration responses when subjected to the same load conditions. Through the nonlinear time history analysis, the effectiveness and the feasibility of the proposed mega-sub controlled structure system (MSCSS) is demonstrated in reducing the displacement and acceleration responses and also improving human comfort under earthquake loads.

High-rise buildings are a common feature of urban cities around the world. These flexible structures frequently exhibit large vibration due to strong winds and earthquakes. Structural control has been employed as an effective means to mitigate excessive responses; however, structural control mechanisms that can be used in tall buildings are limited primarily to mass and liquid dampers. An attractive alternative can be found in outrigger damping systems, where the bending deformation of the building is transformed into shear deformation across dampers placed between the outrigger and the perimeter columns. The outrigger system provides additional damping that can reduce structural responses, such as the floor displacements and accelerations. This paper investigates the potential of using smart dampers, specifically magnetorheological (MR) fluid dampers, in the outrigger system. First, a high-rise building is modeled to portray the St. Francis Shangri-La Place in Philippines. The optimal performance of the outrigger damping system for mitigation of seismic responses in terms of damper size and location also is subsequently evaluated. The efficacy of the semi-active damped outrigger system is finally verified through numerical simulation.

A sliding mode fuzzy control (SMFC) algorithm is applied to design a controller for a benchmark problem on a wind- excited building. The structure is a 76-story concrete office tower with a height of 306 meters, hence the wind resistance characteristics are very important for the serviceability as well as the safety. A control system with an active tuned mass damper is assumed to be installed on the top floor. Since the structural acceleration is measured only at ,limited number of locations without measurement of the wind force, the structure of the conventional continuous sliding mode control may have the feed-back loop only. So, an adaptive least mean squares (LMS) filter is employed in the SMFC algorithm to generate a fictitious feed-forward loop. The adaptive LMS filter is designed based on the information of the stochastic characteristics of the wind velocity along the structure. A numerical study is carried out. and the performance of the present SMFC with the ,adaptive LMS filter is investigated in comparison with those of' other control, of algorithms such as linear quadratic Gaussian control, frequency domain optimal control, quadratic stability control, continuous sliding mode control, and H/sub ∞///sub μ/, control, which were reported by other researchers. The effectiveness of the adaptive LMS filter is also examined. The results indicate that the present algorithm is very efficient .
