In this study, the Heat & Mass balance design optimization tool has developed by linking the design input/output variables with the Heat & Mass balance calculation solver and optimization algorithm and also automating the iterative calculation process. As a result of testing this optimization tool for 10 kinds of power plant, it was expected to improve the NPV and IRR compared with general design methods.
Current estimates of the ice-mass balance over the Greenland and the Antarctica using retrievals of time-varying gravity from GRACE are presented. Two different GRACE gravity data, UTCSR RL01 and UTCSR RL04, are used for the estimates to examine the impact of the relative accuracy of background models in the GRACE data processing for inter-annual variations of GRACE gravity data. In addition, the ice-mass balance is appraised from the conventional GRACE data, which represents global gravity, and the filtered GRACE data, which isolates the terrestrial gravity effect from GRACE gravity data. The former estimate shows that there exists similar negative trends of ice-mass balance over the Greenland from UTCSR RL01 and UTCSR RL04 while the time series from the both GRACE data over the Antarctica differ significantly from each other, and no apparent trends are observed. The result for the Greenland from the latter calculation is similar to the former estimate. However, the latter calculation presents positive trends of ice-mass balance for the Antarctica from both GRACE data. These results imply that residual oceanic geophysical signals, particularly for ocean tides, significantly corrupt the ice-mass estimate over the Antarctica as leakage error. In addition, the spatial alias of GRACE is likely to affect the ice-mass balance because the spatial spectrum of ocean tides is not conserved via GRACE sampling, and thus ocean tides contaminate terrestrial gravity signal. To minimize the alias effect, I suggest to use the combined gravity models from GRACE, SLR and polar motion.
In this study, a multi-zone furnace analysis method that couples a 1D energy and mass balance calculation with a 3D radiative heat transfer calculation is tested in order to verify its reliability. The calculated results for a domestic 500 MW capacity coal-fired boiler furnace were compared with the design data of the boiler manufacturer and CFD analysis, and a good agreement was achieved. Although this calculation method is less sophisticated than the CFD furnace analysis, it has an advantage in terms of calculation time while being able to provide the furnace behavior according to the fuel characteristics and operational variable changes. Therefore, it is expected to be useful for boiler operation diagnosis and daily fuel/operation planning.
Snowmelt from seasonal snow covers can be significant in many environments of northern and alpine areas. Water flow and chemical transport resulting from snowmelt have been studied for an understanding of contributions to watersheds or catchments. A Mobile-Immobile water Model (MIM) was developed to describe the movement of ionic tracers through a snowpack by Lee et al. (2008a) and Lee et al. (2008b). To validate the model used in the studies, mass balance calculations of the model were conducted and comparisons were made between model results and analytical solutions in this work. Mass balance was calculated based on the fact that change in total mass within a snowpack with time is equal to sum of any change in the flux of water or ionic tracers into and out of the snowpack. Calculations of both water and ionic mass show almost perfect agreement between changes of two water and solute mass fluxes. Comparisons between model results and analytical solutions including wave velocity and effective saturation show almost perfect agreement.
The waste treatment fee and energy production effect of Wonju city RDF plant, the first RDF manufacturing plant in Korea, were investigated in the study. All plant operation data, like total weight of received wastes, produced RDF and separated rejects in processes were fully recorded for mass balance calculation of the plant in 2009. Also all consumed oil and electricity were recorded for energy balance calculation. The results showed that the waste treatment fee not including the RDF sales price of 25,000 won/ton-RDF was 116,573 won/ton-MSW and it went down to 105,298 won when included the RDF price. Produced RDF was 40.2% of total received waste in weight. Three components analysis by mass balance calculation of total received waste showed that Wonju city's MSW was 32.4% of combustible, 37.5% of water and 30.1% of incombustible respectively. Energy effect was found that total amount of produced energy was about 4 times more than that of consumed energy.
It is noted that the red tides and the oxygen-deficient water mass are extensively developed in Masan Bay during summer. The nutrients mass balance was calculated in Masan Bay, using the three-dimensional numerical hydrodynamic model and the material cycle model. The material cycle model was calibrated with the data obtained on the field of the study area in June 1993. The nutrients mass balance calculated by the combination of the residual currents and material cycle model results showed nutrients of surface and middle levels to be transported from the inner part to the outer part of Masan Bay, and nutrients of bottom level to be transported from outer part to inner part of Masan Bay. The uptake rate of DIN in the box A1(surface level of inner part) was found to be 337. 5mg/$m^3$ㆍday, the largest value in all 9 boxes and that of DIP was found to be 18.6mg/$m^3$ㆍday in box A1, and the regeneration rate of DIN was found to be 78.2mg/$m^3$ㆍday in the box A3(bottom level of inner part), and that of DIP was found to be 18.6mg/$m^3$ㆍday in box A1. The regenerations of DIN and DIP in the water column of the entire Bay were found to be 7.66ton/day and 760kg/day, respectively. And the releases of DIN and DIP from the sediments of the entire Bay were found to be 2.86ton/day and 634kg/day, respectively. The regeneration rate was 2.5 times as high as the release rate in DIN, and 1.2 times in DIP. The results of mass balance calculation showed not only the nutrients released from the sediments but the nutrients regenerated in water column to be important in the control and management of water quality in Masan Bay.
SI thermochemical hydrogen production process achieves water splitting into hydrogen and oxygen through three chemical reactions. The process is comprised of three sections and one of them is HI decomposition into $H_2$ and $I_2$ called as Section III. The production of $H_2$ included processes involving EED for concentrating a product stream from Section I. Additionally an $I_2$ crystallization would be considered to reduce burden on EED by removing certain amount of $I_2$ out of a process stream prior to EED. In this study, the current thermodynamic model of SI process was briefly described and the calculation results of the applied Electrolytes NRTL model for phase equilibrium calculations was illustrated for ternary systems of Section III. We calculated temperature and heat duty of an $I_2$ crystallizer and heat duty of heaters using UVa model and heat balance equation of simulation tool. The results were expected to be used as operation information in optimizing HI decomposition process and setting up material balance throughout SI process.
A fundamental mathematical model for mass transfer processes has been used to understand the air pollution control process in biotrickling filtration and to evaluate the mass transfer coefficients of gas/liquid (trickling liquid), gas/solid (biomass) and liquid/solid based upon experimental results and mathematical model calculations for selected operating conditions. The mass transfer models for the utilization of the steady-state mass balance for gas/liquid, and dynamic mass balance model for gas/solid & liquid/solid in biotrickling filters were established and discussed. The mass transfer model considered the reactor to comprise finite sections, for each of which dynamic mass balances for gas/solid and liquid/solid system were solved by numerical analysis code (numerical iteration). To determine the mass transfer coefficients ($K_La$) of gas/liquid, gas/solid & liquid/solid in a biotrickling filter, the calculation results based upon mass balance equation was optimized to coincide with the experimental results for the selected operating conditions. Finally, this study contributed the development of experimental methods and discussed the mathematical model to determine the mass transfer coefficients in a biotrickling filtration for air pollution control.

Recently, rainwater harvesting facilities have increasingly constructed mainly in elementary schools and government buildings. Nevertheless, few methods are available for efficient planning and design of rainwater harvesting facilities by considering the weather conditions and purpose of rainwater management in each site, which may lead to a construction of uneconomic facilities. The current method estimates the size of rainwater storage tank by multiplying the size of building or plottage with a certain ratio and has many limitations. In this study, we first developed a method for planning and design of rainwater storage facilities using $Rainstock^{TM}$ model, which is based on mass balance, and economic analysis. Then, the model was applied for the design of a rainwater harvesting facility in a building with the catchment area of $1,000m^2$. The model calculation indicated that the economic feasibility of rainwater harvesting depends on not only the size of storage tank but also the water usage rate. When the water usage rate is $1m^3/day$, the rainwater harvesting facility is not cost-effective regardless of the size of the storage tank. With increasing the water usage rate, the economical efficiency of the facility was improved for a specific size of the storage tank. Based on the model calculation, the optimum tank sizes for $5m^3/day$ and $10m^3/day$ of water usage rates were $24m^3$ and $57m^3$, respectively. It is expected that the model is useful for optimization of rainwater storage facilities in planning and designing steps.

The cool-down performance after soaking is very important in an automotive air-conditioning system and is considered as a key design variable. Therefore, transient characteristics of each system component are essential to the preliminary design as well as steady-state performance. The objective of this study is to develop a computer simulation model and ostinato theoretically the transient performance of an automotive air-conditioning system. To do that, the mathematical modelling of each component, such as compressor, condenser, receiver/drier, expansion valve, and evaporator, is presented first of all. The basic balance equations about mass and energy are used in modelling. For detailed calculation, condenser and evaporator are divided into many sub-sections. Each sub-section is an elemental volume for modelling. In models of expansion valve and compressor, dynamic behaviors are not considered in this analysis, but the quasisteady state ones are just considered, such as the relation between mass flow rate and pressure drop in expansion device, polytropic process in compressor, etc. Also it is assumed that there are no heat loss and no pressure drop in discharge, liquid, and suction lines. The developed simulation model is validated by comparing with the laboratory test data of an automotive air-conditioning system. The overall time-tracing properties of each component agreed well with those of test data in this case.
