The purpose of this study was to investigate effects of large scale marine sand mining on the marine ecological community. For the study, four stations along the coast were selected and monitored in 1998 and 2001 at mining areas and non-mining areas about the Gyeonggi Bay. The result revealed that in 1998, 9 species of fishes, 16 species of crustaceans, and 6 species of mollusks were collected where as in 2001, 11 species of fishes, 5 species of crustaceans, and 2 species of mollusks were collected, uncovering the fact that fishes have diversified while crustaceans and mollusks have reduced on a grand scale. Also, there were two key characteristics regarding the changes of biological communities in mining and nonmining areas. The first was the dwindling of crustaceans inhabiting the sand area. This outcome may be accounted for by the facts that physical removal of seabed sediments and re-sediment due to expansion of floating particles cause direct influence on the ocean floor ecosystem and have continuous effect on the communities of crustaceans which feed on them. Secondly, the newly arrived species and their population during spring and summer seasons have increased in the non-mining areas and have decreased in the mining area. It can be concluded that highly nomadic fish species migrate toward areas with less disturbance or destruction of ecosystem from marine sand mining, and consequently, the communities of fishes change in the sea area. Setting aside the characteristics of the investigated sea areas where the arriving conditions of species vary by seasons, the clear differences of population of organisms in those areas are due to environmental alterations owing to the marine sand mining ; if those large-scale marine sand mining activities continue in the Gyeonggi Bay, their effects on biological communities in the areas will only grow.
The investigation of the fishes was conducted based on the specimens from the Wooi-Islands, southern west coast of Korea in August, 1998. The fishes were composed of 25 species and 22 genera belonging 15 families. Among them, the gobiid fishes composed of 6 species and the combtooth blennies of 3 species. The gobiid fishes, Chasmichthys dolichognathus, Tridentiger trigonocephalus and Synechogobius hasta were most commonly found in the intertidal area of these islands. One specimen collected from tidepool at tentatively identified as Abudefduf bengalensis of the family Pomacentridae for the first time from Korea. This species was characterized by having seven black bars on the trunk of body. A new Korean name "Huk-jul-dom" is proposed for this species.

Pair trawling is one of the important fishing methods for Korean fisheries, and is working in the western sea of Korea - the Yellow Sea and the East China Sea. On the engine power of the trawlers, 72% of 190 pairs of trawlers were equipped with 450ps class engine, and 21% with 450~750ps and merely 7% with in 750ps class 1980. Thereafter the engine power has grown up, so that 450~750ps occupy 28% and 750ps or more 27% in 1992. Main objective fishes of pair trawling were traditionally flat fishes, so the fundamental shape of pair trawl net was a four - seam net, but by the gradual shortage of flat fishes, roundfishes has been noticed. So the six - seam net which performs high opening of net mouth has been used widely since 1985. In the six - seam net, the length of wing was not so short in the beginning but became short in the later instead of the net pendant elongated, and also the pendant was separated into three pieces according to the change of wing structure. Since the 1990's, the objective fishes has gradually been changed into pelagic fishes, the fishing technique is required to fit the behavior of fishes. So the midwater trawling or the multi -layer trawling became required.
This study was carried out to find out the content of injurious heavy metals, such as mercury, lead, cadmium and arsenic of marine fish which had been captured in adjacent sea of Korea. From March, 1 to April, 30 in 1993. 60 sample of fishes were collected the adult fish and young fish. These samples were analyzed by the Mercury Analyzer and Inductively Coupled Plasma Emission Spectro Analyzer. The results of the study were summarized as follows: (1) The content of mercury in Therafra chalcograma was 0.112$\pm$0.034 ppm which was higher than other fishes, but Pseudosciaena manchurica and Pampus argenteus had lower (P<0.05). Although lead content of Trichiurus lepturus was 0.359$\pm$0.056 ppm, which was higher than other fishes. The lead content of Theragra chalcograma had lower to the almost same level. The cadmium content of the Theragra chalcograma was 0.069$\pm$0.010 ppm which was higher than other samples, but Pseudosciaena manchurica had 0.039$\pm$0.020 ppm to lower level. Though there was some fluctuation in the arsenic content which was 0.433~3.752 ppm, the arsenic content of Therafra chalcograma was 3.752$\pm$2.873 ppm which was the higher than any other fishes. But there are not statistical significances. (2) Heavy metal content by the maturity of the fishes: Mercury content of the old Pseudosciaena manchurica was 0.055$\pm$0.15 ppm comparing to the young's result of 0.030$\pm$0.009 ppm (P<0.05). Though there were some differences according to the maturity, but thee was no statistical significance. (3) In view of the correlation of the heavy metal content, for Pseudosciaena manchurica, high correlation was founded to r=0.6437 between mercury and cadmium (P<0.05). Though the content of mercury, arsenic cadmium and lead had positive correlation (r=0.2725) and negative correlation (r=-0.3958), but there was no significance at all. The other fishes were not found correlation between the heavy metal content. Positive correlation was found between age with mercury in Pseudociaena manchurica (r=0.7018, P<0.05). The negative correlation of age with lead content in the Pseudociaena Manchurica was signigicant (P<0.05). The correlation coefficient was r=-0.7623. The age with mercury content in Coloabis saira had high correlation (r=0.7201, P<0.05). Through the above analysis, it can get conclusion that injurious heavy metal content of the fishes in Korea such a mercury, lead, cadmium and arsenic were at the level of natural content. At present, guidelines of maximum residue level allowed at foreign countries about the injurious heavy metal have been used according to the kinds of fish but our government guideline for the marine fishes in only total mercury below 0.7 ppm and lead below 2 ppm. So more aggressive guidelines for the allowance level of heavy metals in marine fishes are required for the safety of foods.

During the study period, a total of 158 individuals of Synechogobius hasta were collected. The range of body length (BL) was 15.4-44.5 cm. The stomachs of 26.6% of the individuals were empty. The most abundant prey was shrimp. Among shrimp, Exopalaemon orientis was the most abundant species, being present in 27% in %IRI (index of relative importance). Fishes and crabs were also abundant prey. Analysis of ontogenetic changes, suggested that shrimp were the main prey of S. hasta of two size classes (<20 and 20-25 cm). The proportion of shrimp decreased, but that of fishes and crabs increased, with increasing body length, beginning at the 25-30 cm size class. In spring, fishes were the dominant prey, while shrimps, and crabs and fishes dominated in autumn and winter, respectively.
This study was conducted to investigate the species composition and distribution patterns of intertidal fishes from the Shandong Peninsula, China from August 2006 to September 2007. The collected fishes were composed of 28 species, belonging to 21 genera, 14 families and 6 orders. Among them, the family Gobiidae was most abundant in both the number of species and individuals, while two species including Hexagrammos agrammus and Sebastes schlegelii were caught in large quantities of young fishes. In this study, Sebastes koreanus and Porocottus leptosomus known as Korean endemic species so far were collected in the Shandong Peninsula, therefore it should be revised that these two species were distributed on the North Yellow Sea and owned by both China and Korea.

This study investigated the concentration of total mercury in 17 species of commonly consumed fishes and assessed the risk to human health from provisional tolerable weekly intakes PTWI% as affected by migratory characterization, such as migration and vagility. The measured mean concentrations of total mercury in these 17 species of commonly consumed fishes suggest that mean concentrations of total mercury in 10 species of migratory fishes (largehead hairtail, chub mackerel, Pacific saury, skipjack tuna, Pacific cod, anchovy, Alaska pollack, brown croaker, Japanese Spanish mackerel, yellow croaker and Pacific herring) were low compared to those in 7 species of demersal fishes (red stingray, brown sole, bastard halibut, conger eel, blackmouth angler, rockfish and filefish). Based on the mean concentrations, the PTWI% of total mercury among commonly consumed migratory fishes was 3.393%, which was higher than that of commonly consumed demersal fishes (2.710%).

Species composition and abundance of larval fishes in the coastal waters off Gori in the southeastern Korea were investigated from January to December in 2006. During the study period, 32 larvae species belonging to 20 families were collected. The dominant species were Engraulis japonicius, Hexagrammos agrammus, Sillago japonicus, Acropoma japonicum, Apogon lineatus, and Konosirus punctatus. These six species accounted for 87.0% of the total number of individuals collected. The number of species, number of individuals, and species diversity indices fluctuated by season. The peak numbers of species and individuals occurred in July and May, respectively. Correlation analysis showed that monthly variations in water temperature and salinity could act as an indicators of seasonal variations in the larval fish community structure and abundance of the dominant species; in particular, the abundance of S. japonicus, A. japonicum, and A. lineatus were significantly corrected with the water temperature.
Environmental differences of each sea around the Korean Peninsula in terms of factors including topography and complexity of sea current may influence species and genetic diversity of marine fishes. Fish are naturally abundant in the frontal area where various currents or water masses meet. However, this food resource is prone to human overexploitation, threatening the marine ecosystem. New fisheries resources management strategies are needed. Such strategies require information about population structure obtained through morphological and genetic methods.
