R&D Trends of Brown Algae as Potential Candidates in Biomedical Application

  • Seaweeds contain various bioactive compounds. Especially, brown algae (Phaeophyceae), the second abundant group of seaweeds, contain numerous nutraceutical and pharmaceutical substances. In this review, we investigated on the brown algae-related patents and literature. Consequently, the research and development (R&D) trends of patent related to brown algae showed that the large majority was applied as the composition of stem cell culture medium and mostly used as active substances. In conclusion, we suggested that many researchers try to investigate and develop applications of brown algae as the sophisticated-level biomedical materials because brown algae are actively developing as simple-level biomedical materials.

Cell proliferation effect of brown marine algae extracts on Mouse Fibroblast (해조류 추출물이 섬유아세포의 증식에 미치는 영향)

  • We examined cell regeneration efficiency of brown marine algae living in Jeju coast for search of a novel therapeutic device with cutaneous wound healing materials. The five algae were collected and compared with epidermal growth factor (EGF) as a positive control in the assays of cell proliferation and cell migration of NIH3T3 fibroblast cells. Among the 80% methanol extracts of these brown algae, the two algal extracts from Ishige foliacea and Colpomenia bullosa showed the proliferative effects of the cells similar to the effect of EGF. Besides it was found that Colpomenia bullosa extract significantly enhanced cell migration of NIH3T3 cell. In the study, therefore, we confirmed that the Colpomenia bullosa extract improved proliferation of NIH3T3 cell and a potential candidate for cultaneous wound healing.

On the Marine Algae in Onsan Area, East Coast of Korea 1. The Contents of Heavy Metals (경남 온산면 일대의 해조류에 관한 연구 1. 중금속 함량)

  • The quantity of heavy metals (As, Cd, Cu, Pb, Zn) contained in marine algae collected in Onsan-myon on the east coast of Korea from March to December 1978 was determined as a part of the environmental base line survey of the Onsan Industrial Base. In general, green algae have a higher Cu content than either brown or red algae, and brown algae have higher As and lower Cu contents, while red algae have a higher Zn content. Significant differences between algal species in either Cd or Pb content were however not found.

On the Accumulation of Radioactive Materials in Marine Organisms Along the Coast of Korea 1. Gross Alpha and Beta Activities in Several Edible Marine Algae

  • In order to clarify the accumulation of radioactive materials in marine organisms of Korea, the present investigation is carried out with 54 samples of edible seaweeds collected from eight sampling sites along the coast of Korea during September, 1973 and April, 1974. In this paper, ash contents, gross alpha activities and gross beta activities are detected. The ash content is 7.53- 15.95% in the species investigated. Among the algal phyla it is about 13.13% in green algae, 12.77% in brown algae, and 10.77% in red algae on an average. On the other hand, gross alpha activities fluctuate from 180.0 pCi/Kg to 1082.6 pCi /Kg-fresh material experimented, and are 530.72 pCi/Kg on an average. They increase from green to red and brown algae, in turn. The activities in a single species collected at the same season increse from eastern to western and southern coasts of Korea, in turn. Gross beta activities, however, fluctuate from 2.40 nCi/Kg to 22.14 nCi/Kg-fresh material experimented, and 9.03 nCi/Kg on an average. They increase also from green to red nd brown algae, in turn. The gross beta activities are specially higher in Sargassum thunbergii, 22.14 nCi/Kg It is expected that this plant could be an indicator to detect the activities in the marine algae along the coast of Korea.

  • Continued to the previous papers, the present investigation is carried out to clarify cesium-137 activities and potassium contents among 54 samples of edible marine algae collected along the coast of Korea during September, 1973 and April, 1974. The potassium contents are variable, 1.5-29.6%, and 11.36% on an average, while most of the members contain them about 10-16% generally. Among the algal phyla, they are 13.49% in green, 10.82% in brown and 16.46% in red algae, respectively. Cesium-137 activities are variable, 0.19-8.13 pCi$\^$137/ Cs/g K, and 2.35 pCi$\^$137/Cs/g K on an average in the samples investigated. Among the algal phyla they are 4.35 in green, 2.17 in brown and 0.89 pCi $\^$137/Cs/g K in red algae, respectively. Green algae contain especially higher activities compared with the other two groups. The brown alga, Myelophycus caespitosus shows the highest activities, 8.13 pCi$\^$137/Cs/g K, among the members investigated. Considering the concentration factor, this plant would be an indicator plant of cesium-137 among the marine algae along the coast of Korea.

Summer Algal Flora of Gojeong-Ri, West Coast of Korea (충남 고정리의 하계 해조상)

  • The marine benthic algae of Gojeong-Ri was investigated in a floristic aspect. As a result, 34 species, 7 blue-green, 14 red, 6 brown and 7 green algae were identified as a summer flora from the area. Among them, Sirocoleum kurzii (blue-green alga), Ralfsia clavata (brown alga), Pseudulvella consociata and Cladophora speciosa (green algae) were known as new records to Korea.

  • In the present paper, seven marine algae collected from the coasts of Korea are described. The two blue-green algae, Coccochloris stagnina Sprengel and Entophysalis conferta (Kuetz.) Drouet and Daily, one brown alga, Ralfsia verrucosa(Aresch.) J. Ag., and the two red algae, Enelittosiphonia hakodatensis (Yendo) Segi and Symphyocladia pennata Okamura, are recorded newly in our country. The other two blue-green algae, Anacystis dimidiata (Kuetz.) Drouet and Daily and Phormidium tenue (Meneghini) Gomont, are recorded for the first time marine water in our country.

Effects of Heated Effluents on the Intertidal Macroalgal Community near Uljin, the East Coast of Korea (동해안 울진원전의 온배수 방출이 주변 해조군집에 미치는 영향)

  • In order to clarify the structure and seasonal dynamics of warm tolerant benthic marine algal community in Korea, the species composition and biomass of marine algae at the discharge canal of Uljin nuclear power plant on the East Coast of Korea were investigated seasonally from February 1992 to October 2000. 107 species of marine algae were found at the discharge canal during the past nine years. In general, the number of species observed was abundant in spring or summer and less in autumn or winter. 27 species (4 blue-green, 5 green, 6 brown and 12 red algae) of marine algae occurred more than 1/ 6 frequency and thus can be categorized as warm tolerant species. Among these, one brown (Dictyota dichotoma) and four red algae (Gelidium amansii, Anphiroa ephedraea, Hydrolithon sargassi, Marginisporum crassissimum) are recorded as warm tolerant marine algae for the first time in Korea. Padina arborescens, Anphiroa zonata and Corallina pilulifera were common species found more than 75% frequency. Seasonal fluctuations of mean biomass were 0-1,330 g dry wt m^(-2) and dominant species in biomass were Corallina pilulifera (contribution to a total biomass proportion 34%), Anphiroa zonata (23%), Padina arborescens (18%) and Sargassum micracanthum (11%). The red algae appeared as predominant algal group at the discharge canal of Uljin nuclear power plant in the qualitative and quantitative aspects. The green algae such as Enterornorpha compressa appeared rather frequently at the discharge canal, but the biomass proportion was very low, in contrast to Kori nuclear power plant where there was definite green algal dominance. Differences in algal communities developed at the discharge canals of Uljin and Kori nuclear power plant on the East Coast of Korea, particularly biomass proportions of green algae, can probably be related to local environmental factors such as water velocity through the canal and natural seawater temperatures.

  • Continued to the previous paper, the present investigation deals with stronitium-90 activities and calcium contents among 54 samples of edible marine algae collected along the coast of Korea during September, 1973 and April, 1974. The calcium contents are variable 2.0-17.8%, and 6.38% on an average. Most of the members investigated contain 2-4% in green and red algae, and 8-10% in brown algae. Strontium-90 activities are 0.32-0.37 pCi/l in sea-water, and 0.80-28.66 pCi$\^$90/Sr/g Ca in edible seaweeds. Among the algal phyla, they are 12.49 in green, 3.34 in brown, and 9.39 pCi$\^$90/Sr/g Ca in red algae, while they are 6.25 pCi$\^$90/Sr/g Ca on an average. In a single species collected at the same season, the highest activities appear mostly from the eastern coast, and from the western and southern coasts, in turn. The green algae, Capsosiphon- Enteromorpha complex show about 3 times higher activities, 28.66 pCi$\^$90/Sr /g Ca compared with the other members showing rather higher activities, and would be an indicator plant of strontium-90 activities of the marine algae along the coast of Korea.

Ecological Characteristics of Marine Algal Communities at the Discharge Canals of Three Nuclear Power Plants on the East Coast of Korea (동해안 3개 원전 배수로 해조군집의 생태적 특성)

  • The species composition and biomass of marine algae at the discharge canals of three (Gori, Wolseong and Uljin) nuclear power plants on the east coast of Korea were investigated seasonally from February 1992 to October 2000. As a result, 103-107 species of marine algae were found at the discharge canals during the past nine years. In general, algal communities established at the discharge canals were less diverse than those at the intake canals and control sites. 43 species (6 blue-green, 9 green, 10 brown and 18 red algae) of marine algae occurred more than 1/6 frequency and thus can be categorized as warm tolerant species. Among these, two green (Urospora penicilliformis, Cladophora albida), four brown (Sphacelaria divaricata, S. rigidula, Sargassum coreanum, S. fulvellum) and four red algae (Stylonema alsidii, Bangia atropurpurea, Hypnea charoides, Chondria crassicaulis) are recorded as warm tolerant marine algae for the first time in Korea during this study. Enteromorpha compressa, Padina arborescens, Amphiroa zonata and Ahnfeltiopsis flabelliformis were common species found more than 50% frequency at the discharge canals of all three nuclear power plants investigated. Dominant species in biomass were Padina arborescens and Amphiroa zonata. Results showed that, as a whole, the red algae appeared as predominant algal group at the discharge canals of all three nuclear power plants on the east coast of Korea. However, the biomass proportion of dominant algae at the discharge canals of each nuclear power plant varied over the year during the past nine years.
