  • Synchronizer ring performance is strictly required in order to extend manual transmission oil drain interval. Zn type additive, which is used as dispersant and anti-wear additive instead of SP additives in manual transmission oil, is applied to improve Synchronizing function and durability. But only Zn type additive is not suitable for high torque transmission because it has not good extreme pressure characteristics. We research on the synchronizer friction and extreme pressure properties in according to change additive types. As a result, it was found that the use of non-active extreme pressure and friction modifier additives has benefit in the improvement of synchronizer friction characteristics and durability.

  • In this study, numerical analysis was conducted to understand the flow characteristics of lubrication system in a manual transmission installed in a commercial vehicle. Also, the analysis was conducted with the purpose of improving the heat and lubricative condition of the transmission. Discharging flow rates on each oil hole outlet according to various engine rotating speed and the length of oil hole branch was calculated. In conclusion, as engine rotating speed is high and the length of oil hole branch is long, the discharging flow rate is high by virtue of the centrifugal force. In addition, this study proposed data for optimal design of lubrication system in manual transmission for a commercial vehicle.

  • This study has conducted numerical analysis for lubrication system of transmission for commercial vehicle. The lubrication oil system in transmission can be applied to a large scale commercial vehicle which is over 15tons. The flow rate of lubricating oil has been obtained for each of branch port from the lubrication pipe. The results from numerical simulation are mainly suggested for the mass flow rate of lubrication oil in the rotating main shaft of transmission system. It has been found that the mass flow rate from oil hole increased with an rotating rate of main shaft. The flow characteristic from oil hole has been presented for the lubricating system in the manual transmission.

  • The purpose of this paper is to present the case study of tribological failure analysis on the gear damages, oil leakage, and sealant sealing in a manual transmission of front engine and front wheel drive vehicle. The manual transmission is to change the speed range and direction of the engines depending on the driving conditions by friction driving forces with input and output gear system. The material property and surface roughness of the gears are strongly related to the gear noise and micro-vibration, oil leakage and wear, which may decrease the real contact area of the gear and the strength of the oil film thickness between the driving gear and driven one. The O-ring damage of speedometer driven gear and bad sealant sealing of oil pan may produce oil leakage through the contact surfaces, which cause the oil shortage and seizure on the sliding surfaces of the transaxle gears. In the failure case study, the proper repair working and good lubrication are very important for the long life of the transaxle without any tribological failures and oil leakage.

  • The purpose of this paper is to study and analyze the failure examples for fire by friction on clutch, manual transmission and tire system in a car. In the first example, the driver took the pedal with foot to act the clutch. But the clutch disk did not return from flywheel by leakage of clutch hydraulic line. The heat was produced between clutch disk and flywheel by surface contacting. As a result, it was produced the fire by oil sludge sticked with transmission. In the second example, the transmission system was operated to transfer power of engine by contacting with gear and gear. But, as if the oil of transmission was caused the oil insufficiency because of leaking by crack of transmission case, it found the fact that was produced the fire by deposit material on transmission case. In the third example, when the car's driver continuously pushed an accelerator pedal for escaping from dry pit, the tire took the heat by the friction force between tire and surface of road. As a result, it became the direct cause for the fire. Therefore the driver must manage not to produce the fire with friction parts by heating during running.

  • Friction losses in complex tribo-technical system are revealed primarily through their effect on the operating temperature level. In order to assess the influence of the oil formulation on the temperature level comprehensive tests were run in a model test apparatus consisting of a special adapter for the 4-ball test rig. More than ten with different formulations (different base oils, additive packages and viscosity modifiers) were tested, The resulting temperature levels varied by nearly 25 %. The objective of this model testing is to assess the influence of the oil formulation on the operating temperature of vehicle manual transmission. The correlation to the real tribotechnical system was confirmed by a VW Polo transmission test.

  • With the rise in oil prices and ongoing concerns about environment, there is an increased amount of interest in automated manual transmission (AMT) vehicles. Torque control in an AMT vehicle is attained by controlling the displacement of the dry-type clutch's actuator. To provide good ride comfort akin to that of an automatic transmission vehicle, the clutch control is vital to an AMT vehicle. In this study, a method of obtaining the clutch torque from a dynamometer test is devised. This method is able to identify the relationship between the displacement of the clutch actuator and the clutch torque. A simulator for estimating the performance of an AMT vehicle is developed using MATLAB Simulink. The results obtained from both the vehicle and simulation exhibit a similar trend.

  • The purpose of this study is to conduct the study of the combustion and thermal characteristics through transportation oil for the analysis of fire hazard. Transportation oil breaks down into fuels such as diesel for civilian demands, gasoline, DF1(diesel for military), high sulfur diesel(for marine), kerosene and JP1(for aviation), and lubricants like brake fluid, power steering oil, engine oil, and automatic and manual transmission oil. The experiments of flash point, ignition point, flame duration time, heat release rate were carried out using TAG closed cup flash point tester(AFP761), Cleveland open cup auto flash point analyzer(AFP762), KRS-RG-9000 and Dual cone calorimeter. As a result, the fuel's ignition points were lower than lubricants, especially that of gasoline was not conducted as it has below zero one. Gasoline has the highest ignition point of about $600^{\circ}C$, while the other fuels showed $400{\sim}465^{\circ}C$. For flame duration time, lubricants had over 300 seconds, but fuels had less than 300 seconds except high sulfur diesel(350 seconds). Total heat release rate ranged $287{\sim}462kW/m^2$ for lubricants and gasoline showed the highest total heat release rate, $652kW/m^2$.
