Total replacement of dietary fish oil with alternative lipid sources in a practical diet for mandarin fish, Siniperca scherzeri, juveniles

  • A 12-week feeding trial was designed to evaluate the effect of total replacement of fish oil (FO) with terrestrial alternative oils on growth, feed utilization, body composition, hematological parameters, and fillet fatty acid profile of mandarin fish juveniles. Four iso-nitrogenous (56% crude protein) and iso-lipidic (13% crude lipid) practical diets were formulated. A control diet contained 6% FO and three other experimental diets were prepared by replacing FO with linseed oil, soybean oil, and lard (designed as FO, LO, SO, and lard, respectively). Each diet was randomly allocated to triplicate groups of 25 fish ($1.8{\pm}0.03g/fish$) in a circular tank. Complete replacement of FO by three tested alternative oils had no remarkable impact on growth performance, feed utilization efficiency, and morphological and hematological parameters of juvenile mandarin fish. However, daily feed intake was found to be significantly higher for fish fed the SO diet compared with those fed the FO and LO diets. Fish fed LO and SO diets exhibited significantly higher levels of the whole body lipid compared to fish fed diet containing FO. Fillet fatty acid composition reflected dietary fatty acid profile. The highest level of ${\alpha}$-linolenic acid, linoleic acid, and oleic acid was observed in fish fillet fed LO, SO, and lard, respectively. Although the eicosapentaenoic acid level of fish fillet fed diet FO was higher than other treatments, no significant difference was found in docosahexaenoic acid content among all dietary groups. The results of the present study clearly demonstrate that the complete replacement of FO in mandarin fish diets is achievable. These findings are useful in dietary formulation to reduce feed costs without compromising mandarin fish growth.

Quality Characteristics of Pan Bread Added with Citrus Mandarin Peel Powder (감귤과피 분말을 첨가한 식빵의 품질 특성)

  • This study was conducted to examine the characteristics of bread quality as per addition rate of citrus mandarin peel powder since interests and concerns about healthy functional food have been increased in contemporary society. The result of mixogram from Mixograph showed that dough added with 3% citrus mandarin peel powder was suitable for baking quality. Stickiness of dough was decreased with addition of citrus mandarin peel powder. Compared with the controlled group, fermentation rate was decreased as the level of citrus mandarin peel powder increased while pH levels of dough and bread were significantly decreased. The TPA analysis showed that the hardness and adhesiveness levels increased as the level of citrus mandarin peel powder increased whereas springiness, cohesiveness and chewiness became decreased. Crumb fineness and elongation became higher as seen from the result of crumbScan. Volume and specific volume was decreased. The result of preference test presented that crumb color, texture, flavor and taste were the highest in the M3, which showed highest point in overall preference. In conclusion, M3 was the best in preference, taste and texture, thus determined as the optimal rate in association with the addition of citrus mandarin peel powder.

Freshness of Satsuma Mandarin Packed in Anti-fogged MA Film with Acid Treated Zeolite (산 처리된 제올라이트와 결로 방지제를 함유한 MA 필름으로 포장한 감귤의 신선도)

  • This study investigated the effect of functional MA films (FMA) incorporated with zeolite powder treated with 1 N HCL solution and anti-fogging agent on the freshness extension of Satsuma mandarin. Preference, weight loss, total ascorbic acid, sugar content, titratable acidity and gas composition in package of Satsuma mandarin were evaluated during storage at $15^{\circ}C$. After 120 days of storage, the weight loss of mandarin packed with LLDPE film (control, L) was 1%, FMA film (CA) was 1.6%. Total ascorbic acid content of Satsuma manderin in control was 19.97 mg%, those of CA was 24.25 mg%. The titratable acidity of Satsuma manderin in CA was higher than that of control, while soluble solids content of CA was lower than that of control after 120 days. Ethylene gas content of control was 89.5 ppm and those of CA was 73.6 ppm after 120 days. Quality of Satsuma mandarin packed with CA was better than that of control. It was verified that shelf-life of Satsuma mandarin in control was 100 days and those of CA film was 130 days. Quality of Satsuma mandarin was few different between treated with anti-fogging agent and non-treated, but commodity of film treated with anti-fogging agent was considered better than that of non-treated.

Bioconversion and growth performance of Hermetia illucens in single fruit by-products

  • As agricultural production increases due to population growth, agricultural by-products that are generated at all production stages increase commensurately. Black soldier fly (BSF) (Hermetia illucens) treatment has potential as an environmentally friendly process to combat the environmental pollution caused by agricultural by-products. This study examined the utilization of BSF larvae in the decomposition of the by-products of apples and mandarins, fruits commonly produced in South Korea. The BSF test larvae were fed apple pomace or mandarin waste, and the control larvae were fed calf feed. Larval weight and size were measured at 4-day intervals until larvae reached the pre-pupal stage. Larval development time, survival rate, and BSF fecundity rate were calculated for all three substrates. Waste reduction and bioconversion ratios were also calculated. The developmental time of larvae fed with apple pomace and mandarin waste was greater than that of the control larvae. The average weight of larvae fed with the fruit by-products was less than that of the control. There was no significant difference in the survival rate of BSF larvae or the fecundity rate of BSF between the substrates used in this study. BSF larvae decomposed 48.0% and 61.5% of apple pomace and mandarin waste, respectively. The bioconversion efficiency rates of BSF larvae fed with apple pomace and mandarin waste were 9.1% and 12.1%, respectively. These results indicated that decomposition of single fruit by-products by BSF larvae is an environmentally friendly and effective bioconversion process.

Elimination of Fenitrothion Residues during Dietary Fiber and Bioflavonoid Preparations from Mandarin Orange Peels (밀감과피로부터 식이섬유와 Bioflavonoid 정제 중 Fenitrothion 잔류분의 제거)

  • This study was undertaken in order to elucidate the elimination of fenitrothion residues during the dietary fiber and bioflavonoid preparations from mandarin orange peels. Dietary fibers were prepared from contaminated mandarin orange peels through homogenization, enzyme treatment, ethanol precipitation, acetone washing and air drying, at the yields of 17.4% total dietary fiber, 13.1% insoluble dietary fiber and 1.7% soluble dietary fiber. The removal rate of fenitrothion residues at 13 and 0.5 ppm levels in orange peels was 98.4% and 91.9% in total dietary fiber, 99.7% and 97.1% in insoluble dietary fiber, 100% and 99.6% in soluble dietary fiber, respectively. When bioflavonoid was prepared from contaminated mandarin orange peels through homogenization, soaking, ethanol precipitation, hexane and butanol extractions, the removal rate of fenitrothion residues was 92.7% in intermediate extract and 100% in final extract.

Effect of Embryogenic Callus Conditions on Plant Regeneration in Satsuma Mandarin (Citrus unshiu Marc.)

  • The ability to form embryiod from callus in satsuma mandarin is low and unstable. In this study, the conditions of embryogenic calli induced from nucellar tissue for promotion of plant regeneration in satsuma mandarin were investigated. The calli of I, II and III line were divided into two sizes of 0.5 mm and 1.0 mm in diameter and two weight gradients of percoll at 40% and 50% though the filter mesh. The frequency of embryo formation from $\phi$ 1.0mm-40% was slightly higher than callus that from others. Adventitious embryoids developed to a globular stage were transferred to regeneration medium. In 'Miyagawa Wase', the embryos from I and II line developed into a heart stage from most of $\phi$ 0.5 mm- 40% and $\phi$1.0 mm-40% calli, but it failed in 'Sugiyama Unshu'. In the cultivar of 'Miyagawa Wase', 63% of adventitious embryos transferred to the regeneration medium developed into the heart stage from the most $\phi$ 1.0 mm-40% calli of I line, but of 'Sugiyama Unshu' failed in some calli condition. The embryoids from two callus lines developed further to shoots and plantlets, while the embriods from III line abnormal failed to regenerate in the cultivar. From these results, it is suggested that the plant regeneration from embryogenic callus in satsuma mandarin could be affected by callus conditions.

Immature Citrus Fruit Extracts Enhance the Apoptosis Inducing Potential of Cisplatin in Human Malignant Melanoma A375 Cells via Regulation of Nitric Oxide and Inhibitor of Apoptosis Family (IAP) (산화질소와 IAP 조절을 통한 감귤 미성숙과의 cisplatin-유발 흑색종 A375 세포의 자연사멸 증강 효과)

  • In a previous study, we found that methanolic extracts of immature fruits of Satuma mandarin (Citrus unshiu Marc. var. okitsu) contained relatively high amounts of phytochemicals. Here we show that a combined treatment consisting of immature fruits of Satuma mandarin and cisplatin induced strong apoptotic response in human melanoma A375 cells. We further investigated the mechanisms by which immature fruits of Satuma mandarin augment cisplatin-induced apoptosis in A375 cells. Satuma mandarin up-regulated the expression of nitric oxide synthase (NOS), elevated nitric oxide ($NO^{\cdot}$) production, and weakening the anti-apoptotic signals inhibitor of apoptosis (IAP) family, thus facilitating the process of apoptosis. These results suggest that immature fruits of Satuma mandarin in combination with cisplatin might have therapeutic value in melanoma treatment worthy of further development.

Survival of Listeria monocytogenes and Salmonella Typhimurium in Retail Mandarin Orange, Prunus mume (Maesil) and Kiwi Extracts (시판 감귤주스, 매실주스 및 키위 즙에서 Listeria monocytogenes와 Salmonella Typhimurium의 생존성)

  • Inactivation of Salmonella Typhimurium and Listeria monocytogenenes in mandarin orange, Prunus mume (maesil), and kiwi juices was evaluated. A three-strain mixture of S. Typhimurium or L. monocytogenes was inoculated (7 log CFU/ml) into a commercial mandarin orange juice and maesil juice, and home-maid kiwi extract. The inactivation effect of Maesil juice was estimated by the addition into the other two fruit juices. All fruit juices had acidic pH, ranging from 2.8 to 3.5 and it was not variable during all experimental period, being at $4^{\circ}C$ for 14 days, The present study demonstrated that Maesil juice inactivated throughly L. monocytogenes within 7 days, while kiwi extract and mandarin orange juice archived 3.0-log inactivation and 1.0-log inactivation, respectively, until 14 days of storage. S. Typhimurium was completely reduced by Maesil juice and kiwi extract within 14 days, but mandarin orange juice showed only 1.4-log inactivation. The inactivation of L. monocytogenes and S. Typhimurium was increased by adding 10% maesil juice to both mandarin orange juice and kiwi extract.

Effect of Density and Mixing Ratio of Mandarin Peels on The Bending Performance of Sawdust-Mandarin Peels Particleboards (톱밥-귤박 파티클보드의 역학적 성능에 미치는 밀도와 귤박첨가율의 영향)

  • This study was carried out to estimate the effects of density and mixing ratio of mandarin peels on the bending performances of the sawdust-mandarin peels particle boards. The board density influenced significantly to the bending performance of boards. Dynamic modulus of elasticity (dMOE) and static modulus of elasticity (sMOE) and modulus of rupture (MOR) of particle boards decreased with an increase in the mixing ratio of mandarin peels at the board densities of $0.4g/cm^3$ and $0.5g/cm^3$. High correlations were found between the dMOE and sMOE, and dMOE and MOR of particle boards prepared. Therefore, it was concluded that the dMOE obtained by free vibration test using resonance frequency could be used for predicting the sMOE and MOR of sawdust-mandarin peels particle boards.

  • Abusive language used by college students reflects current social attitudes and values. Adopting a comparative and cross-cultural perspective, this study examines the frequency and perceived severity of abusive language in English and Mandarin Chinese. Because abusive language often includes sexual connotations, this paper employs a particular concentration on sexism. Gender differences in the use of abusive language illustrate a male bias across cultures.
