  • In orthodontic field, the study on gnathostatic model is very important to the diagnosis and analysis of malocclusion. The purpose of this study is to observe that relation of orbital plane and upper canine in Koreans. We selected 230 cases with normal occlusion, 124 male and 106 female cases aged from 12 years to 25 years, to prepare 230 gnathostatic models, and measured the distance from midpoint of mesio-distal distance of upper canine to orbital plane in gnathostatic model. The results obtained were as follows: 1) The mean value of the distance from upper canine to orbital plane showed no significant change with age. 2) The mean value of the distance from the upper canine to orbital plane was -3.11mm in male and -3.84mm in female. 3) The orbital plane passed through the upper canine in normal occlusion of Koreans.

  • Because of the potential morbidity and complications associated with surgical procedures, limiting the extent of orthognathic surgery is a desire for many orthodontic patients. An eighteen-year-old woman had a severe Class III malocclusion and required bi-maxillary surgery. By changing the patient's maxillary occlusal plane using orthodontic mini-implants, she was able to avoid the maxillary surgery; requiring only a mandibular setback surgery. To accurately predict the post-surgery outcome, we applied a new soft tissue prediction method. We were able to follow and report the long-term result of her combined orthodontic and orthognathic treatment. The changes to her occlusal plane continue to appear stable over 6 years later.

  • 11 years 7 months old female had a reverse object of anterior teeth and class III molar relationship. Maxillary right and left canines were erupted labially and lower left lateral incisor was congenitally missed. She was treated by rapid palatal expansion and full band technique with extraction of maxillary and mandibular second molars. The following results were obtained. 1. Maxilary arch was expanded. 2. Anterior cross-bite and crowding was corrected. 3. Molar relationship was corrected. 4. Profile was somewhat improved.

  • It has recently been reported that long-standing post-traumatic open bite can be successfully corrected with botulinum toxin type A (BTX-A) injection into the anterior belly of the digastric muscle (ABDM). The report documented an individual with bilaterally symmetrical and otherwise unremarkable anterior digastric musculature. However, the existence of variant anterior digastric musculature is common and may complicate the management of anterior open bite with BTX-A injection. Screening for variant ABDM can be accomplished via ultrasound, computed tomography, and magnetic resonance imaging. Screening for variant ABDM should be performed prior to BTX-A injection in order to account for musculature that may exert undesired forces, such as inferolateral deviation, on the anterior mandible in patients with anterior open bite.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to evaluated the process of model analysis, design, and production for a full mouth prosthetic rehabilitation of function, esthetics, and pronunciation. Methods: This is a case report of class III malocclusion with a severe anterior incisor occlusion and a prosthetic treatment of patient with poor occlusion of posterior teeth. A provisional restoration based on the diagnostic wax-up was applied to the patient. And then functions, esthetics, and occlusal stability were observed during 4 week tracking period. Final restorations were delivered and evaluated based on a systematic analysis, diagnosis and treatment plan. Results: We confirms that this case study obtained the satisfactory results in terms of functions and esthetics. Conclusion : If we can give the patient the continuous evaluation and progress monitoring, we expect the dentist and the dental technician to design the prosthesis successfully.

  • We report the treatment of an adult Class II malocclusion with severe crowding and a hopeless lower second molar. According to the treatment plan, 4 premolars and 4 third molars were to be extracted for 2-jaw surgery. To replace the hopeless lower second molar, one upper third molar was successfully autotransplanted during the pre-surgical orthodontic treatment. Multiple teeth are frequently extracted for treatment purposes in adult surgical cases. Under precise diagnosis, the reuse of extracted teeth to replace missing teeth can be a successful alternative even in adult surgical patients.

  • Two brothers aged 15 1/6 and 12 2/3 years were diagnosed as Class I malocclusion with ectopic eruption of the upper left central incisor in the elder brother and etopic eruption in the upper right second premolar in the younger. All 4 second molars were extracted at the same time in both brothers. The treatment results were as follows. 1. In the elder brother, the third molars were fully erupted and their angulations were excellent at 3 years post-treatment. 2. In the younger brother, the lower right third molar was mesially erupted and upper third molars were still undergoing eruption at 3 years post-treatment. 3. Assessment of panex films of both brothers at aged 15 showed an earlier eruption of the third molars in the younger brother. 4. A longer post-treatment supervision of the third molars was required in the younger brother. 5. The facial probiles were enhanced and the ectopic eruptions were corrected in both brothers.

  • The authors have measured and obtained the Holdaway Ratio of 104 adults with normal occlusion and 75 adults with malocclusion roentgenocephalometrically. The results were as follows. 1. The Holdaway ratio was 4.41:1 in male and 11.66:1 in female. 2. In female, labial inclination of the lower central incisor was severe and convexity of the pogonion was less than male.

  • This study was undertaken to determine the relapse amount in the various malocclusions and correlative coefficient with other factors. The sample were consisted of 60 orthodontic patients whose models were perfect before treatment, after treatment and after 6 months post treatment. For this study 8 liner lengths were measured in maxilla and mandible respectively. The results were as follows. 1. The change with treatment of maxillary dental arch length was most large in non extraction group of Angle's class II malocclusion. 2. The relapse compared with other treatment changes was most little in the arch perimeter. 3. The relapse was increased in proportion to the beginning age of the treatment in non extraction group. 4. The relapse of maxillary intermolar width was increased and those of overbite & molar relationship were decreased in proportion to the duration of active treatment. 5. The relapse of maxillary intercanine width was increased with a time goes after treatment.
