  • This study was carried out to investigate meat production ability of special poultry(Ogol fowl, pheasant and mallard). The results obtained Were summarized as follows ; 1. On the average live weight in male and female of Ogol fowl and mallard were 1,304.0~1,311.8g, 1,013.0~1,138.8g, respectively. The live weight of pheasant was lighter than that of Ogol fowl and mallard. The ratio of carcass to live weight in pheasant, Ogol fowl and mallard were 70.9~72.2%, 66.9~68.2% and 65.4~65.9%, respectively. 2. On the edible giblets ratio to live weight, the that of mallard was the highest(6.3%), while the that of Ogol fowl was the lowest(4.7~4.8%) in each individual poultry. 3. On the cut-up parts ratio to carcass weight, the neck(6.7~8.3%) and back(16.1~18.0%) ratio of pheasant were lower than that of Ogol fowl and mallard, but the neck(11.1~13.3%), wings(14.6~16.2%) and back(23.6~5.2%) ratio of mallard were higher than the others. 4. On the ratio of meat to breast and legs parts, the yield of breast meat was higher than that of legs meat of all poultries. In mallard, the skin ratio on both parts(17.6~22.9%) was higher than the others, while the bone ratio of pheasant and Ogol fowl(15.6~20.6) was higher than that of mallard.

  • Riemerella anatipestifer (RA) infection is a contagious disease of domestic ducks, turkey, and various other birds. In a flock of mallard ducklings, about 30% of the birds, 3 weeks old, showed lethergy, greenish diarrhea, tremor of head and neck, and died 2-3 days after signs appeared. Grossly, fibrinous exudates covered the heart and surface of the live. Microscopically, mononuclear cells and heterophils were primarily inflammatory cells in the exudate. These were also observed in the meninges in brain. Microbiologically, gram (-) short rod bipolar shaped bacteria were recovered on blood agar and agglutinated by antisera of R anatipestifer. Sulfamethoxasole/trimethoprim were administered and clinically effective. This case was a R anatipestifer infection caused fibrinous pericarditis, hepatitis and meningitis in mallards.

  • The lipid and fatty acid composition of various poultry eggs were examined after extracting yolk oils from the eggs of caged hen, open barn-reared hen, mallard, and muscovy duck. Total lipid content in 100 g of each edible portion was the highest in muscovy duck egg followed by open barn-reared hen, mallard, caged hen, and natural hen eggs. The triglyceride contents in the egg were in the order of caged hen, open barn-reared hen, natural hen, mallard, and muscovy duck. The cholesterol contents in total lipid were the highest in caged hen and muscovy duck eggs(4.5%), and the lowest in mallard(3.3%). Caged hen eggs had higher neutral lipid ratio among total lipid, but had lower ratio of glycolipid and phospholipid compared with those of the open barn-reared hens. For fatty acid composition, linoleic acid was the highest in the muscovy and linolenic acid was the highest in open barn-reared hen eggs. The contents of arachidonic acid and Eicosapentaenoic acid(EPA) were the highest in muscovy eggs. On the other hand, the content of Docosahexaenoic acid(DHA) was the highest in muscovy duck eggs.

  • Mallard and Spot-billed ducks that are typical wintering water birds use the wide rice field in the center of the water system as a wintering ground. I try to figure out the daily movement distance from Home-Range to wintering ground for mallard and spot-billed ducks in Mangyunggang, Dongjingang where located in central region. In 2015 wintering period by using a Cannon-net, I attached WT-300 to 5 mallard and 5 spot-billed ducks. Daily movement distance is an overall average 0.89km, the largest distance was 31.09km. Daily movement distance of mallard was 0.97km, the largest distance was 28.78km. Daily movement distance of Spot-billed ducks was 0.80km, the largest distance was 33.39km. Home-Range analysis is used by the SHP files that is compatible with GIS and ArcGIS 9.0 Animal Movement Extension, it was analyzed using the Minimum Convex Polygon Method (MCP) and the Kernel Density Estimation (KDE). The behavior rights of two kinds of ducks was $490.34km^2$ by Minimum Convex Polygon Method (MCP) ($SD=311.20km^2N=10$), an important habitats Kernel Density Estimation (KDE 50%) was $42.24km^2$. Home-Range of Mallard (MCP) was $568.02km^2$, it is wider than home-range(MCP) of spot-billed duck $397.13km^2$ relatively, the core habitats of mallard is $53.05km^2$, it is wider than mallard's core habitats(KDE 50%) $29.26km^2$ relatively.

  • This experiment was conducted to investigate the effects of feeding with MS (miraculous soil-bacteria)-fermented food waste on feeding efficiency and meat quality of mallard. Twenty one heads of 12 weeks-old mallards were fed with three different mixing rates of MS-fermented food waste (0, 20 and 50 %) with 7 replicates. After 6 weeks of feeding, weight gain and feed intake were measured to estimate feeding efficiency, moreover physico-chemical characteristics, amino acids and fatty acids of the fresh slaughtered mallards were analyzed to determine meat quality. The feeding efficiency of 0 % fermented food waste (control) was significantly (p<0.05) higher than other treatments. Water holding capacity and pH were not significantly differed. The color value in lightness of control meat was higher, while in redness was lower than that of the plots mixed with fermented food waste. Total content of amino acids in thigh meat was relatively lower in control, but that in breast meat showed a reverse trend. The amount of unsaturated fatty acids in both thigh and breast meat was the highest in the 50 % mixed plot. Considering economic and environmental aspects for mallard feeding, this results indicated that MS fermented food waste could be a useful resources for mallard feed.

  • Almost 1/4 of all the coconuts in the world is produced in the Philippines. During periods of high supply of coconuts it would be better to feed coconut meat to farm animals for conversion into meat and eggs. Three studies were conducted at the Visayas State College of Agriculture, Baybay, Leyte, Philippines from April, 1983 to April, 1985 to determine the response of Mallard ducks, Muscovy ducks and broilers to fresh coconut meat supplementation in their diets. Results showed that Mallard ducks on ration with coconut meat performed similarly with those on ration without coconut meat. Feed cost per dozen eggs was reduced by 28-30% with coconut meat. Feed cost per unit gain of muscovy ducks was reduced by 32-37% by coconut meat supplementation. With broilers, feed conversion, gain in weight and breast weight were significantly improved by coconut meat supplementation. Return-above-feed cost increased with increasing level of coconut meat in the ration.

  • Studies on the food-safety of pheasant and mallard, which belong to wild fowl as new meat resources. were carried out. The results were summarized as follows : 1. Food poisoning bacteria including Salmonella spp, was not detected from the inspections of small intestine, cecum, and rectum. 2. Parasite inspection tests on blood, feces, digestive organ, and thoracic organs were negative. 3. Antibiotic residues from the carcass muscle by simplified disk methods were not detected. 4. Seven different pesticide residue tests, such as DDT and BHT, on the muscle and liver were negative. 5. Four different kinds of toxic heavy metals such as Cd were much lower than the permissible concentration. Studies on the food safety tests and inspections from the pheasant and mallard were revealed that from taking this new food resources, the toxicities would be very low for the human health by the direct influences.

  • Mallard (Anas platyrhynchos) is the abundant winter visitor in South Korea. Mallard migrates long distances between Russian Siberia and Korea. This species prefers a rice paddy area as their winter habitat. We captured birds using cannon-net, and attached the GPS-Mobile phone based Telemetry(WT-200) on Seven Mallards in the winter of 2011~2013. We were monitored wintering home-range and movement distance. We analyzed the tracking location data using ArcGIS 9.0 and calculated Kernel Density Estimation (KDE) and Minimum Convex Polygon (MCP). The average home-range in the wintering ground by MCP was $118.8km^2$(SD=70.1, n=7)and the maximum home-rang was $221.8km^2$ and the minimum was $27.7km^2$. Extents of home-range by KDE were $60.0km^2$(KDE 90%), $23.0km^2$(KDE 70%) and $11.6km^2$(KDE 50%). Mallard moved an average of 19.4 km from start site(attach to WT-200 site), maximum moved was 33.2 km and minimum moved was 9.4 km. The average distance of 0.8 km between GPS fixed point(range 0.2~1.6 km), maximum moved was 19.7 km. Mallard moved a very short distance in wintering season and showed a very high water-dependent trends in wintering site.

  • One of the most important habitats of Waterbirds in the west coast of Korea is Saemangeum and its mudflat, located within the estuary of the Dongji and Mankyung River. This study was conducted to clarify the community characteristics of wintering waterbirds in Saemangeum from November 2008 to February 2009. Waterbirds and Raptor are 69 species and 409,044 individuals by the sum of peak counts were recorded. We classified the wintering waterbirds into 14 groups of taxa based on the similar ecological attributes. The dominant species were Baikal Teal Anas formosa, Mallard Anas platyrhynchos, Greater White-fronted Goose Anser albifrons, Greater Scaup Aythya marila. Greater White-fronted Goose was significantly positive correlated with survey period. Baikal Teal, Greater White-fronted Goose, Bean Goose, Greater Scaup, Common Shelduck Tadorna tadorna were increased when compared with last report but Mallard, Spot-billed Duck Anas poecilorhyncha, Dunlin Calidris alpina were no difference.
