The composition of fatty acids and organic acids in the fruits, stems, and roots of Acanthopanax were studied. The major fatty acids in the fruits, stems and roots were oleic, linoleic and palmitic acids and these composed about 86-98% of total fatty acids. However, there are great differences in content of the major fatty acids between varieties and each parts. Citric, malefic, succinic, malonic, fumaric and malic acids were identified in the fruits. Malic acid was the predaminant organic acid. There are great differences in individual content of the organic acids between varieties and each parts. Malonic and malefic acids were not detected in the stems and roots, respectively. Citric acid was most abundant organic acid parts. Total organic acid content in roots was very low compared to that of fruits and stems.

${\alpha},{\beta}$-Dichlorosuccinic acid was synthesized through the reaction of maleic anhydride with $Cl_2$(g) and ultra violet(200~300nm) wavelength in the presence of $CCl_4$. The second reaction of N-(${\alpha},{\beta}$-dichloro)succinic acid contained glucosamine derivatives(I) was accomplished by a modification of the general acylation using excess ${\alpha},{\beta}$-dichlorosuccinic anhydride in the presence of 2% acetic acid with methanol as a solvent at elevated temperature($70^{\circ}C$). We considered organic acid derivatives were useful especially of treatment for the cultivating porphyra and skin beauty culture.
In this study, we investigated kinetic model for the acid-catalyzed xylan hydrolysis at temperature $120{\sim}150^{\circ}C$. Also, we analyzed the kinetic parameters for xylose production and furfural decomposition. The hydrolysis of xylan and the degradation of xylose were promoted by high reaction temperature and acid concentration. The optimal hydrolysis condition for the highest reaction rate constants ($k_1$) was different depending on the acid catalysts. Among sulfuric, oxalic and maleic acid, the xylan reaction rate constants ($k_1$) to xylose had the highest value of $0.0241min^{-1}$ when 100 mM sulfuric acid was used at $120^{\circ}C$. However, sulfuric acid induced more xylose degradation compared to oxalic and maleic acid hydrolysis. The activation energy for xylan degradation was the highest when sulfuric acid was used.
Mechanical and morphological properties of poly(acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene) (ABS) and poly(lactic acid) (PLA) blends containing compatibilizers were investigated. Poly(styrene-acrylonitrile)-g-maleic anhydride) (SAN-g-MAH), poly(ethylene-co-octene) rubber-maleic anhydride (EOR-MAH) and poly(ethylene-co-glycidyl methacrylate) (EGMA) were used as compatibilizers. Mechanical properties such as tensile, flexural and impact strengths of ABS/PLA (80/20, wt%) blends were found to be increased when the SAN-g-MAH, EOR-MAH and EGMA were used. The maximum values for mechanical properties of the ABS/PLA (80/20) blend were observed when SAN-g-MAH was used as a compatibilizer at the concentration of 3 phr. From morphological studies of the ABS/PLA (80/20) blends, PLA droplet size was decreased by the addition of the compatibilizers used in this study. From the results of mechanical and morphological properties of the ABS/PLA (80/20) blends, SAN-g-MAH (3 phr) was found to be the most effective compatibilizer among the compatibilizers used in this study.
This study focuses on the investigation of the possibility of the crosslinked poly (vinyl alcohol) membranes with both poly (acrylic acid-co-maleic acid) (PAM) and 3-(trihydroxysilyl)-1-propane-sulfonic acid (THS-PSA) for the direct methanol fuel cell application. In order to characterize the prepared membranes, the water content, the thermal gravimetric analysis, the ion exchange capacity, the ion conductivity and the methanol permeability measurements were carried out and then compared with the existing Nafion 115 membrane. The ion exchange capacity of the resulting membranes showed 1.6~1.8 meq./g membrane which was improved than Nafion 115, 0.91 meq./g membrane. In the case of the proton conductivity, the THS-PSA introduced membranes gave more excellent $0.042{\sim}0.056\;S{\cdot}cm^{-1}$ than Nafion 115, $0.024\;S{\cdot}cm^{-1}$. On the other hand, the methanol permeability was increased more than Nafion 115 for all the range of THA-PSA concentration.

This study deals with the preparation of polymeric electrolyte membranes having high durability for the application of fuel cells. The membranes under investigation were prepared the impregnation to porous polyethylene membranes with poly(vinyl alcohol)(PVA), poly(styrene sulfonic acid-co-maleic acid), and (PSSA-MA)3-(trihydroxysilyl)-1-propanesulfonic acid (THS-PSA). To characterize the resulting membranes, the water contents, the contact angles, FT-IR, the proton conductivity and the the modulus were measured. The proton conductivity of 30% content of THS-PSA at $55^{\circ}C$ gave excellent $1.27{\times}10^{-1}S/cm$ and the mechanical strength was improved 7 times higher up to the THS-PSA content 15%, as a result, the durability was elevated extensively.
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the shear bond strength of three light-cured glass ionomer cements to blood contaminated bovine dentin. The materials used in this study were Fuji II LC, Dyract and Variglass VLC. The dentin conditioners were 10% polyacrylic acid, 10% maleic acid and 10% phosphoric acid. 180 lower anterior bovine teeth were selected in this study. The teeth were embedded in acrylic resin and were grounded with 320 to 600 grit silicon carbide paper to create a flat dentin surface. The teeth were divided into SIX groups. The experimental procedures in six groups were as follows; Group l(GF) : Samples bonded to dentin surface with Fuji II LC after 10% polyacrylic acid treatment. Group 2(BGF) : Samples bonded to dentin surface with Fuji II LC after 10% polyacrylic acid treatment and blood contamination. Group 3(MD) : Samples bonded to dentin surface with Dyract after 10% maleic acid treatment. Group 4(BMD) : Samples bonded to dentin surface with Dyract after 10% maleic acid treatment and blood contamination. Group 5(PV) : Samples bonded to dentin surface with Variglass VLC after 10% phosphoric acid treatment. Group 6(BPV) : Samples bonded-to dentin surface with Variglass VLC after 10% phosphoric acid treatment and blood contamination. Group 1,3 and 5 were classified into the control groups, while group 2,4 and 6 were classified into the experimental groups. Each group contained 30 samples. After 24 hours water storage at $37^{\circ}C$, all smples were subjected to a shear load to fracture at a cross head speed of 1.0 mm/min with Instron universal testing machine(No. 4467). Debonded surfaces were observed under Scanning Electron Microscope(Hitachi S-2300) at 20kvp. The data were evaluated statistically at the 95% confidence level with Student's t-test. The following results obtained; 1. Shear bond strengths were higher in the control groups(1,3,5 group) than in the experimental groups(2,4,6 group). 2. The shear bond strength of group 5(PV) was the highest in the control groups, and the group 5 was significantly higher than the group l(GF) on the shear bond strength. 3. The group 4(BMD) was the highest on the shear bond strength, and the group 2(BGF) was the lowest in the experimental groups. The group 4(BMD) and 6(BPV) showed a significant difference with the group 2 on the shear bond strength. 4. All the groups showed an adhesive-cohesive failure. except the group 2(BGF) showing adhesive failure.
Using aqueous solution free radical polymerization with glacial acrylic acid (GAA), maleic anhydride (MA) and sodium methallyl disulfonate (SMADS), a novel linear polycarboxylate dispersant was synthesized for ceramics. Dispersant linear structural characterization was done by FTIR, $^1H$ NMR, HPLC and GPC, and the ratio of monomers was determined using an orthogonal experiment. This research is focused on the effects of polymerization temperature, monomer mole ratios and dosage of initiator on ceramic slurry viscosity with linear polycarboxylate dispersant for ceramic dosage rate of 0.30% (based on dry slurry), all of which were investigated by single factor test. The best polymerization conditions for linear GAA-MA-SMADS are when n(AA) : n(MA) : n(SMADS) equals 3.0 : 1.0 : 0.5, the molecular weight of the polymer is 4600 daltons, the initiator sodium persulfate accounts for 7% of the total mass of polymerized monomers, the polymerization temperature is $90^{\circ}C$ and the reaction time is 2 h. The ceramic body slurry viscosity drops from $820mPa{\cdot}s$ to $46mPa{\cdot}s$ when the concentration of the polycarboxylate dispersant is 0.30%.

The surface energies and acid-base interaction between the untreated and treated Jute or Hemp fibers and different matrix compositions of polypropylene-maleic anhydride polypropylene copolymers (PP-MAPP) were investigated using dynamic contact angle measurement. The contribution of the acid-base property into the interfacial adhesion of the natural fibers/matrix systems were characterized by calculating the work adhesion coming from the acid-base interaction. On the other hand, microfailure mechanism of both single Jute and Hemp fiber bundles were investigated using the combination of single fiber tensile test and acoustic emission. Distinctly different micro failure modes of the different natural fiber/polypropylene systems wet ε observed using optical microscope and determined indirectly by AE and their FFT analysis.
A catalyst for promoting the commercialization of N-phenylamleimide (PMI), a compound used to strengthen the heat resistance of ABS resins and also completely imported, was developed. N-phenylmaleamic acid (PMA) was first quantitatively obtained through the reaction of maleic anhydride and aniline. A catalyst was then investigated for obtaining PMI. Zinc acetate/$Et_3N$, composite catalyst, showed better performance than a single acid catalyst. By using the developed composite catalyst, PMI could be synthesized with the yield and purity of 90% and 99.3%, respectively without any further purification processes.
