  • This study was conducted to evaluate the degree of value assigned to traditional Korean foods by residents from the Kyunggi(n=582) and Kangwon(n=189) areas of Korea. We determined the degree of value for 13 items classified as traditional Korean foods by asking subjects to score the items based on a 5 point Likert scale. Based on the total scores, resident in Kyunggi assigned Kimchi the high degree of value. Next was Tteok, then Eum-cheong, Jang, Hankwa, Muk, Bap, Jeon, Namul, and Guk, respectively. In the Kangwon area, the total scores showed that Kimchi also had the highest degree of value, followed by Tteok, Jang, Hankwa, Eum-Cheong, Muk, Bap, Namul, Jeon and Myeon, respectively. The female residents in Kyunggi gave Kimchi a higher degree of value than the male residents'. Also, subjects with overall higher positive perception of traditional foods had a higher degree of value for Kimchi. Relative to age, ther was a trend showing older subjects had a higher degree of value for Kimchi than Younger subjects. In the case of the head of the family, residents of the Kangwon area showed a trend toward a high degree of value for Kimchi. The residents in Kyunggi, compared to the residents in Kangwon, evaluated the Jang food group as inexpensive foods(p<0.05). However, there was no significant difference between the residence areas for the total score of the items. Overall, the resident's evaluation of the degree of value traditional Korean foods increased with increasing age.

  • The purpose of this research was to investigate the effect of the desired sportswear benefits on the sportswear image preferences and store patronage according to store type. The subjects were 773 male and female consumers who were residents in Seoul. The data were analyzed by factor analysis, multiple regression, and t-test. The results showed that there were five desired sportswear benefits: figure compensation, status ostentation, comfort, individuality, and youth-orientation. Sportswear image preferences consisted of four factors: innovative, luxurious, simple, and active. Store patronage encompassed department store, franchise store, discount store, wholesale store, internet, TV home shopping, and catalogue. Statistical analysis showed that there were significant effects of desired sportswear benefits on sportswear image preferences and store patronage. For example, the more consumers desired figure compensation/sex appeal benefits from sportswear, the more they preferred innovative, luxurious, and active sportswear images and the stronger was their patronage of department stores. The study also showed differences between male and female consumers in regard to sportwear benefits sought and store image preferences. The implications of the research were discussed.

  • This study was undertaken to evaluate the present status of A. lumbricoides infection in a rural area of Korea. The 307 residents of all age group in Gumsa Myun, Yeo Ju Gun were examined by Kato's cellophane thick smear technique. Pyrantel pamoste was administered to the Ascaris infection cases by a single dose of 5mg/kg of body weight. The whole amount of 24 hour stool during two or three consecutive days were collected sepatately. The expelled A. lumbricoides worms from the unfiltered stool remnants were collected. They were measured by the length and weight, and the sex of the worms were differentiated. The results are as follows: 1) The incidence of A. lumbricoids infection of the 307 specimens examined was 40.1%(male: 40.9%, female:39.0%). The difference according to guman sex distribution was not statistically significant. 2) Seventy two Ascaris infected cases expelled 163 worms of various size. The mean number of worms per infected case were calculated as 2.3. The sex ratio of examined female and male Ascaris was 1.5:1 3) Among the expelled 97 female worms, the genital girdle were found in 60 female worms(61.9%). Genital girdle of gemale worm was located from the head in the position of $38{\pm}4$ of total length 100. 4) The average body length of male Ascaris was $16.3{\pm}3.1cm$ and female Ascaris was $21.7{\pm}3.5cm$ 5) The relationship between the weight(Y) and the length(X) of individual Ascaris worm was plotted. • This study was performed to estimate the prevalence and the risk factors of arthritis in Andong rural area in 2003. The subjects were 1,462 people (544 males, 818 females) aged 45 years and over. The arthritis group was composed of 322 people (72 males, 250 females), diagnosed by doctor or self-diagnosed by the symptoms. Prevalence of arthritis was higher in female (27.2%) compared to male (13.2%). Mean age of arthritis group was significantly higher than that of normal group (male 66.2 vs 62.8, female 62.6 vs 60.1, p<0.001). The anthropometric measurements, such as % body fat, body mass index (BMI), and waist circumference, and the biochemical measurements, such as plasma triglyceride and total cholesterol level, were significantly higher only in female (not in male) arthritis group than those in normal group. Health related lifestyle factors, such as smoking, alcohol drinking, and exercise, were not different between both groups. The risk factors for arthritis were analyzed using the multiple logistic regression method and expressed as odds ratio (OR). The results showed that female compared to male (OR=1.983), over 65 years compared to 45$\sim$64 years (male OR=2.769 and female OR=1.461), and obese female subjects (not for male) by % body fat ($\geq$32% OR=2.035) or BMI ($\geq$25 kg/$m^2$ OR=1.556) showed significantly higher risk factors for arthritis. Regarding nutrient intakes, higher intakes of fat (OR=1.443), calcium (OR=1.503), iron (OR=1.518) and vitamin A (OR=1.390) in female seemed to be risk factors. In contrast to female, higher intakes of vitamin A (OR=0.526) and riboflavin (OR=0.582) seemed to decrease the risk for arthritis in male. This study revealed that the prevalence of arthritis was significantly higher in female and aged individuals. Also, in order to decrease the prevalence and/or prevention of arthritis, female should prevent overfatness and decrease some nutrient intakes, while male should increase their intakes.

  • For the purpose of disclosing estimated annual incidence rate and causative factors of traumatic spinal cord injury and obtaining basic data for the establishment of effective measures to prevent this injury, the medical record of 204 cases of Seoul residents with spinal cord injury which admitted in 46 general hospitals and National rehabilitation center located in Seoul, including Sam Yook Rehabilitation Center and Jung Ang Hospital in Kyungi do and occurred in 1995 were analyzed. The results were as follows: 1) The estimated annual incidence rate of traumatic spinal cord injury in 1995 of Seoul residents was 20.5 per million population. This incidence rate was the highest in the 40th years (34.1), followed by in the 50th years (26.5) and in the 20th years (25.6) in descending order. 2) The incidence rate ratio between male and female was 3.5:1. 3) The leading cause of injury was the highest in traffic accidents (42.2%), followed by falls from elevation (29.4%) and falls on the same level (9.8%). 4) Traffic accident mainly occured from 20th years to 40th years and falls from elevation in 50th years. 5) The level of spinal cord injury was the highest in cervical cord (63.2%), followed by the thoracic cord (21.1%) and lumbosacral cord (15.7%). Traffic accidents mainly caused in cervical cord injury whereas thoracic cord injury and lumbosacral cord injury were caused from falls from elevation. Above theconsiderations in mind, it suggested that in order to prevent traumatic spinal cord injuries, safety education of falls from elevation should be focused on the 20th years and 50th years male, moreover safety education of traffic accidents will be needed in the 30th years and 40th years male.

  • Clonorchis sinensis is the most common fish-borne intestinal parasite in Korea. The aim of the present investigation was to survey the status of C. sinensis infection and analyze associated risk factors in residents of Haman-gun, Gyeongsangnam-do. A total of 5,114 residents from 10 administrative towns/villages voluntarily agreed to participate in the study, which comprised fecal examination, a questionnaire survey for risk factors, ultrasonography, and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay for cancer biomarker detection in the blood. We detected C. sinensis eggs in 5.3% of the subjects. By region, Gunbuk-myeon had the highest number of residents with C. sinensis eggs. The infection rate and intensity were higher in male than in female residents. Based on the risk factor questionnaire, infection was highly associated with drinking, a history of C. sinensis infection, and the practice of eating of raw freshwater fish. Extension of the bile duct, infection intensity, and cancer biomarker detection significantly correlated with the presence of eggs in the study population. In conclusion, the development of feasible, long-term control policies and strategies for the elimination of C. sinensis in Korea is still required.

  • Cancer illness representations and screening history among residents of Kolkata, India, were investigated along with socio-demographic characteristics in an effort to understand possible motivations for health behavior. A total of 106 participants were recruited from community locations in Kolkata, India and completed surveys including demographics, the illness perception questionnaire-revised (IPQ-R), and previous experience with cancer and screening practices. Participants were 51.5% college educated, 57% female, 51.5% full-time employed with average age of 32.7 years (R: 18-60 years). Descriptive statistics were generated for the subscales of the IPQ-R, cancer-screening practices and cancer experience. Correlation analyses were conducted to investigate associations between cancer representations and socio-demographic variables. Univariate ANOVAs were calculated to determine gender differences in IPQ-R subscales and differences between participants who knew someone diagnosed with cancer versus those who did not. While 76% of participants knew someone with cancer, only 5% of the sample engaged in cancer screening. Participants perceived cancer as a serious illness with negative emotional valence. Younger age (r(100)=-.36, p<0.001) and male gender (F(1, 98)=5.22, p=0.01, ${\eta}_2$=0.05) were associated with better illness coherence. Males also reported greater personal control (F(1, 98)=5.34, p=0.02, ${\eta}_2$=0.05) were associated with better illness coherence. Low screening rates precluded analyses of the relationship between illness representations and cancer screening. Cancer was viewed as a threatening and uncontrollable disease among this sample of educated, middle class Kolkata residents. This view may act as a barrier to seeking cancer screening. Public awareness campaigns aimed at improving understanding of the causes, symptoms and consequences of cancer might reduce misunderstandings and fear, especially among women and older populations, who report less comprehension of cancer.

  • This study investigated and tested the overall level of dietary habits and health status/health management of the residents in a rural area. The interview survey was performed in March 2004 with a structured questionnaire to 510 residents who lived in Muan-Gun of Jeonnam province. The questionnaire was the abridged Scale of Dietary Habits and Health Status which surveys the morbidity, subjective health status, health management, and health examination. The Chi-squire method was used for some of the cross-sectional data. The 510 adult respondents were composed of 61.2% male and 38.3% female. In regularity of meal time, 56.3% of the subjects had a meal regularly(eating time), while 73.5% had a balanced diet(eating number). The habit of regular meal time was significantly higher in old people than in young people. The majority of the subjects had an appropriate meal amount. Unbalanced diet was higher in young people than in old people. 51.4% had the dining out and was significantly higher in younger people than in old people. In other questions, 60.7% of the subjects took a snack, 77.3% were under regular health management, and 49.6% had health examination. A minority of the respondents (31.3%) had disease, while 13.5% chronic disease, and 17.8% had acute disease. The level of dietary habits and general characteristics were positively correlated with each other, as were habits and health status. These results suggest the need for nutritional education programs directed at young people with a special emphasis on regularity of meal time. unbalanced diet, dining-out and a snack.
