  • Recent large scale surveys such as Sloan Digital Sky Survey have produced homogeneous samples of multiple-image gravitationally lensed quasars with well-defined selection effects. Statistical analysis on these can yield independent constraints on cosmological parameters. Here we use the image separation statistics of lensed quasars from Sloan Digital Sky Survey Quasar Lens Search (SQLS) to derive constraints on cosmological parameters. Our analysis does not require knowledge of the magnification bias, which can only be estimated from the detailed knowledge on the quasar luminosity function at all redshifts, and includes the consideration for the bias against small image separation quasars due to selection against faint lens galaxy in the follow-up observations for confirmation. We first use the mean image separation of the lensed quasars as a function of redshift to find that cosmological models with extreme curvature are inconsistent with observed lensed quasars. We then apply the maximum likelihood test to the statistical sample of 16 lensed quasars that have both measured redshift and magnitude of lens galaxy. The likelihood incorporates the probability that the observed image separation is realized given the luminosity of the lens galaxy in the same manner as Im et al. (1997). We find that the 95% confidence range for the cosmological constant (i.e., the vacuum energy density) is $0.72{\leq}{\Omega}_{\Lambda}{\leq}1.0$ for a flat universe. We also find that the equation of state parameter can be consistent with -1 as long as the matter density ${\Omega}_m{\leq}0.4$ (95% confidence range). We conclude that the image separation statistics incorporating the brightness of lens galaxies can provide robust constraints on the cosmological parameters.

  • The natural dyeing of fabrics with persimmon juice(astringent persimmon, sweet persimmon, astringent and sweet persimmon mix) was investigated. After dyeing of cotton and silk fabrics with persimmon juice, we evaluated the dyeability of persimmon juice, the observation of fabric surface with high magnification video microscope, physical properties and color fastness with the conditions of repeating times of dyeing and variables of mordants. The results obtained from this study were as follows: The fabrics dyed with astringent persimmon have shown the highest color difference, while the fabrics dyed with sweet persimmon and the fabrics dyed with astringent and sweet persimmon mix have shown similar color differences. With the increase of repeating times of dyeing, the brightness of fabric decreased. However, $a^*$ value increased gradually, so that it became dark brown color. The $a^*$ and $b^*$ values of dyed fabrics with Fe-mordant have dropped significantly, so that they have shown achromatic colors. But the fabrics treated with other mordants have shown yellowish brown colors. On the surface of the fabrics, threads were bonded together by the viscosity of persimmon juice. Regardless of the types of persimmon juice, stiffness was increased after dying, while crease resistance was decreased. The water repellency of silk fabrics were improved than cotton fabrics after dyeing with sweet persimmon juice, but in case of cotton, it hasn't changed. Washing fastness was improved with the EM(Effective Microorganism)-fermented liquid treatment, and rubbing fastness of two fabrics was better in dry condition than in wet condition.

  • Background : When surgeons plan mandible ortho surgery for patients with skeletal class III facial asymmetry, they must be consider the exact method of surgery for correction of the facial asymmetry. Three-dimensional (3D) CT imaging is efficient in depicting specific structures in the craniofacial area. It reproduces actual measurements by minimizing errors from patient movement and allows for image magnification. Due to the rapid development of digital image technology and the expansion of treatment range, rapid progress has been made in the study of three-dimensional facial skeleton analysis. The purpose of this study was to conduct 3D CT image comparisons of mandible changes after mandibular surgery in facial asymmetry patients. Materials & methods : This study included 7 patients who underwent 3D CT before and after correction of facial asymmetry in the oral and maxillofacial surgery department of Yeungnam University Hospital between August 2002 and November 2005. Patients included 2 males and 5 females, with ages ranging from 16 years to 30 years (average 21.4 years). Frontal CT images were obtained before and after surgery, and changes in mandible angle and length were measured. Results : When we compared the measurements obtained before and after mandibular surgery in facial asymmetry patients, correction of facial asymmetry was identified on the "after" images. The mean difference between the right and left mandibular angles before mandibular surgery was $7^{\circ}$, whereas after mandibular surgery it was $1.5^{\circ}$. The right and left mandibular length ratios subtracted from 1 was 0.114 before mandibular surgery, while it was 0.036 after mandibular surgery. The differences were analyzed using the nonparametric test and the Wilcoxon signed ranks test (p<0.05). Conclusion: The system that has been developed produces an accurate three-dimensional representation of the skull, upon which individualized surgery of the skull and jaws is easily performed. The system also permits accurate measurement and monitoring of postsurgical changes to the face and jaws through reproducible and noninvasive means.

  • Ultrasound images for the abdominal muscles are complicated enough to have difficulty in interpreting their results. For better interpretation, magnifying the original image is necessary but its magnified image could be deteriorated and suffer from information loss. Thus, in this paper, we propose a magnifying method that reduces the gap between the original image and the magnified one in quality using a fuzzy method with weights for its brightness and interpolation. The proposed method extracts information of pixels in magnified image that have most similar characteristics of the original one by applying fuzzy membership function. In the process, the difference in the brightness between pixels of the magnified image and the original one using bilinear interpolation method and the weight value using the interpolation from multiplied values of four pixels are supplied to the fuzzy membership function. In this experiment, the proposed method reduces the cloudy phenomenon appears commonly compared to the bilinear interpolation method among those qualitative issues of image interpretation.

  • In this paper, we proposed an effective quality improvement scheme of magnified image using the surface characteristics in image. If the surface in image is estimated as simple convex surface or simple concave surface, the interpolated value can be calculated to have the surface characteristics by using the other method in the proposed scheme. The calculated value becomes the interpolated pixel value inmagnified image. So, themagnified image reflects the surface characteristics of the real image. If the surface is not estimated as simple convex surface or simple concave surface, the interpolated value is calculated more accurately than bilinear interpolation by using the method of the proposed scheme. The PSNR values of the magnified images using the proposed schemes are greater than those of the magnified images using the previous interpolation schemes.

  • The aim of this study was to examine the perceptions and attitudes of dental hygienists on the use of dental loupes. A questionnaire survey was conducted to 180 dental hygienists working at dental institutions and public health centers. 4.6% of all respondents answered that they use dental loupes currently, and 38.9% answered that they need to introduce dental loupes in the dental clinic. About half indicated that loupes were a benefit to improved vision(53%) and Improved clarity(44%). The most commonly reported disadvantages to loupes wear were limited depth of vision(39%) and overall dependency. It was confirmed that most dental hygienists did not use loupes, there was little interest in loupes. More research is needed on the effects of loupes in dental practice.

  • A five mirror system with a reduction magnification(M=+1/5) is designed for DUV optical lithography. First, for spherical mirror systems, the numerical solutions of all zero 3rd order aberrations are derived and the 3-dimensional shape of the solution-domain is obtained. In these solutions, we select solutions which have as less residual aberrations and smaller central obscurration as possible and the aspherization is carried out to the last two spherical mirrors to obtain a system that has as higher NA as possible. Finally we obtain the system of which NA is 0.45, the central obscuration is about 25% and the resolution is about 650 cycles/mm at the 50% MTF value criterion and the depth of focus of 0.8${\mu}m$ for the nearly incoherent illumination (${\sigma}$=1.0) and the wavelength of 0.193${\mu}m$ (ArF excimer laser line).

  • Benign peripheral nerve tumors, although infrequent, must be considered as a possible cause of pain and disability in the extremities. There are three varieties of these tumors that are of clinical importance: neurilemmomas, neurofibromas, and post-traumatic neuroma. Neurilemmomas are the most common primary solitary tumor of the peripheral nerve trunks, and are almost always benign, Neurofibromas may occur as a solitary nerve tumor, but can present as multiple lesions as in von Recklinghausen's disease. Clinically, this tumor may presents as a solitary mass in the subcutaneous tissue which is centrally located with the nerve fibers travelling through the tumor mass. Traumatic neuroma is the proliferation of nerve elements with connective tissue during the process of regeneration from severed nerves undergoing Wallerian degeration, and is therefore not a true neoplasm. A neuroma-in-countinuity is the result of partial severance of a nerve, or of a crushing or traction injury in which all or part of the epineurium and perineurium is intact. We experienced each of the three varieties. With magnification, the neurilemmoma was removed by meticulous dissection from the parent nerve preserving the normal fascicles to which it was attached. The neurofibroma was excised and the nerve was reconstructed with interposed vein graft and the neuroma-in-continuity was excised and reconstructed with sural nerve graft. We report histologic characteristics of each tumors and the methods to repair the nerve defects after tumor excision with brief discussion.

  • A new dimension measuring method for the measurement of diameter of an object has been developed using laser triangulation. The 3D data of an object was calculated from the 2 dimensional image information obtained by the laser stripe using the laser triangulation. The system that use existing theory can measure the diameter of hole not only in a normal plane but also ill an incline plane. However, in the existing theory, since the lens with fixed feral length was used, the area of measurement was fixed. The simplest way to solve this problem is to change distance between a CCD camera and object. Other way is to use a zoom lens having variable focal length. In this paper, the zoom lens with variable focal length was used. Therefore, we ran experiment with magnification that is optimized according to size of object using zoom lens with variable focal length.
