  • We will introduce the surface magneto-optic Kerr effect (SMOKE), which is one of the most helpful experimental methods in the area of surface magnetism for the last two decades. The basic magnetic characteristics of magnetic thin film is the most essential part for the further understanding and application. For example, the possibility of the realization of ferromagnetism for a single layer of iron, its Curie temperature far below that of bulk iron, and the direction of easy axis are the fundamental questions for the spintronic application. SMOKE is an efficient method to answer for the questions above.

  • This paper describes the development of a new type of an integrated optical adjustable attenuator using magneto-optic effects in 4-layer slab waveguide. The characteristics of the proposed structure are analyzed and evaluated. Furthermore, the fabrication method and attenuation characteristics have been tested by experimets, therby confirming qualitatively the validity of the design theory.

  • Drive line shape for reflective magneto-optic spatial light modulator has been designed by computer simulation. A factor of 3 improvement in pixel switching sensitivity and power consumption, compared to the conventional reflective magneto-optic spatial light modulator, has been achieved by the use of wedge-shape drive line and a soft magnetic layer. A factor of 2 higher optical efficiency and a factor of 2 simpler fabrication process have been achieved by the use of drive lines that covers most of the surface of pixel and unpatterned insulator.

  • We attempted to fabricate a new type of magneto optic spatial light modulator (MO-SLM) for multiple-tone modulation by using in-plane magnetization. In the MO-SLM, magnetic property of magneto-optical layer was modified to be suitable for multiple-tone expression by substituting Al in Bi:YIG film. At a driving current to 28 mA in an electrode of the fabricated MO-SLM, changes in brightness of pixels were observed using a polarization microscope.

  • The nonreciprocal phase shift characteristics of infinite slab optical waveguides with magneto-optic materials in the cladding layer was calculated at 1.55 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ for optical isolators. The infinite slab waveguide structures considered in this paper were as follows. rho magneto-optic materials used as a cladding layer were Ce:YIG and LNB(LuNdBi)$_3$(FeAl)$_{5}$)$_{12}$,). Their specific Faraday rotations Θ$_{F}$ are 4500$^{\circ}$/cm, 500$^{\circ}$/cm at wavelength 1.55 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ respectively. The guiding layer with multi-quantum well structure was used, and it consists of 1.3Q and InGaAs. In order to investigate the effect of evanescent field penetrating the cadding, layer, guiding mode characteristics were calculated for the cases when the substrate is InP and air. We calculated the minimum lengths of 90$^{\circ}$ nonreciprocal phase shifters and their optimum guiding layer thicknesses in various optical waveguide structures.res.s.

  • Read out signal and temperature distribution of magnetic amplifying magnetooptical disk were studied. Temperature distribution of recording layer and adjacent layers were calculated when the disk was at rest. Mark size, length and location were simulated from a chain of recording beam pulses. In addition, signal amplitude depending on the shape of the marks, readout signals from the recording layer and amplified marks of the readout layer, were simulated. Simplified thermal conduction model was used to calculate the temperature distribution of recording and adjacent layers as a function of time as well as to calculate the mark size, length and location. Readout signal was calculated by the convolution of the disk reflectivity and the Gaussian beam intensity. Readout signal from the mark in the readout layer amplified to the size of the laser beam fumed out to be twice as large as the signal from the crescent shaped mark in the recording layer.

(A/B)$_{k}$ M/(B/A)$_{k}$ 의 구조를 갖는 1차원 자성 포토닉 결정의 자기 광학 특성을 수치해석하였다. • One dimensional magneto-photonic crystal having structure of (A/B)$^{k/W}$(B/A)$^{k}$ , where M is a magnetic layer of highly Bi-substituted iron garnet, A and B are dielectric layers of $SiO_2$ and T $a_2$O$_{5/}$, and k is the stacking number of the dielectric layers, has been numerically analyzed as a function of the thickness (d$_{M}$) of M (1∼535 nm) and the stacking numer of k (5∼15). The transmittance, Faraday rotation, and figure of merit of the magneto-photonic crystal have been investigated both in the visible and infrared wavelengths. A factor of several and several tens greater Faraday rotation and figure of merit have been obtained compared to the single layer of M, at many localized modes. In the visible the maximum figure of merit of 0.15 was obtained ( = 720 nm) when k = 11 and d$_{M}$ = 375 nm with T : 0.54, $\theta$$_{F}$ = 8.13$^{\circ}$, which was a factor of 30 greater than that of single garnet layer. Much greater maximum figure of merit, 0.285, was obtained in the infrared ( = 1114 nm) when k = 11 and d$_{M}$ = 800 nm with T = 0.66, $\theta$$_{F}$ = 18$^{\circ}$, which was a factor of 100 greater than that of single garnet layer.
