Lack of Myelination in the Anterior Limbs of the Internal Capsule Associated with Cri-du-Chat Syndrome: Case Report

  • A 21-month-old girl with cri-du-chat syndrome in conjunction with developmental delay underwent brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). The MRI showed hypoplasia of the brain stem, a normal cerebellum, thinning of the corpus callosum, and a lack of myelination in both anterior limbs of the internal capsule. She also had neonatal bilateral subependymal cysts. We believe that the symmetrical lack of myelination in both anterior limbs of the internal capsule could be a diagnostic clue of cri-du-chat syndrome.

  • Breast hamartomas are typically a benign condition and rarely develop into malignant lesions. The coexistence of carcinoma and a breast hamartoma is rare; only 15 cases have been reported in the literature. Here, we report a case of invasive ductal carcinoma associated with hamartoma in a 60-year-old woman. Mammography, ultrasonography and magnetic resonance imaging showed typical features of a breast hamartoma and a suspicious mass with microcalcifications arising within the hamartoma.

  • We report the case of a patient who presented with rupture of a silicone breast implant showing acute and chronic inflammation. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) showed silicone foci outside the implant shell and inside the pectoralis muscles that represented intra- and extracapsular ruptures of the implant and silicone granuloma. There were distinct fluid-fluid levels of various signal intensities and no signs of implant collapse such as 'linguine sign.' Rather, we detected enlargement of both the implant shell and the breast.

  • Acromegaly is a rare endocrine disorder caused by excessive secretion of the growth hormone. There is a wide range of clinical manifestations from somatic symptoms to respiratory or cardiac failure. Among them, cardiovascular involvement is a leading cause of morbidity and mortality. There are relatively few cases reporting cardiac magnetic resonance imaging (CMR) findings of cardiomyopathy in patients with acromegaly. Thus, we report a case of acromegaly showing dilated cardiomyopathy focusing on the findings of CMR.

  • Neurosyphilis is an infection of the brain or spinal cord that is caused by the bacterium Treponema pallidum. Syphilitic myelitis, which involves the spinal cord, is a very rare form of neurosyphilis seen in patients with syphilis. It requires differentiation from other diseases of the spinal cord, including idiopathic transverse myelitis and spinal cord infarction. Herein, we describe the presentation and diagnosis of syphilitic myelitis in a 43-year-old woman, based on a flip-flop sign and candle guttering appearance depicted in magnetic resonance imaging and laboratory tests.

  • The prevalence of cheek lymphoma, especially a mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue lymphoma (MALT), is very rare. Non-specific symptoms and image findings of cheek lymphoma may mimic benign entities and make it difficult to diagnose. In this case report, we present a case of MALT lymphoma of the cheek mimicking benign entities on computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging.

  • Paraganglioma is a rare tumor of paraganglia, derived from neural crest cells in sympathetic or parasympathetic ganglions. It can be widely distributed from the skull base to the bottom of the pelvis. The pancreas, however, is a rare location of this neoplasm, and only a limited number of cases have been reported in the English literature, especially with gadoxetic-acid-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and diffusion-weighted images (DWI). We herein report a case of pathologically proven paraganglioma in the pancreas head with a literature review on endoscopic ultrasonography (EUS), computed tomography (CT), gadoxetic-acid-enhanced MRI, and DWI sequence.

  • Polyarteritis nodosa (PAN) is a systemic vasculitis involving small- and medium-sized arteries, which presents with necrotizing inflammation. PAN occurs as a systemic disease or as a limited form confined to a single organ. Few cases have been reported with single organ involvement, and even fewer have been reported with skeletal muscle involvement. Herein, we report the ultrasonography and magnetic resonance imaging findings in a rare case of PAN with limited muscle involvement in a 66-year-old man.

  • Encapsulated papillary carcinoma (EPC) is an uncommon breast malignancy that is known to be indolent and associated with an excellent prognosis. However, there is a rare possibility of locoregional relapse or metastasis. Here, we present a case of recurrent EPC in the ipsilateral internal mammary lymph node (IMLN) that was detected in the postoperative magnetic resonance imaging with abbreviated protocol (AB-MRI). AB-MRI could facilitate the early detection of recurrent disease in the IMLN and may provide prognostic gain for such patients.

Quantitative Evaluation of the First Order Creatine-Kinase Reaction Rate Constant in in vivo Shunted Ovine Heart Treated with Oxandrolone Using Magnetization Transfer 31P Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy (MT-31P-MRS) and 1 H/31P Double-Tuned Surface Coil: a Preliminary Study

  • Purpose: Children born with single ventricle physiology demonstrate poor growth rate and suffer from malnutrition, which lead to increased morbidity and mortality in this population. We assume that an anabolic steroid, oxandrolone, will promote growth in these infants by improving myocardial energy utilization. The purpose of this paper is to study the efficacy of oxandrolone on myocardial energy consumption in these infants. Materials and Methods: We modeled single ventricle physiology in a lamb by prenatally shunting the aorta to the pulmonary artery and then postnatally, we monitored cardiac energy utilization by quantitatively measuring the first order reaction rate constant, $k_f$ of the creatine-kinase reaction in the heart using magnetization transfer $^{31}P$ magnetic resonance spectroscopy, home built $^1H/^{31}P$ transmit/receive double tuned coil, and transmit/receive switch. We also performed cine MRI to study the structure and dynamic function of the myocardium and the left ventricular chamber. The spectroscopy data were processed using home-developed python software, while cine data were analyzed using Argus software. Results: We quantitatively measured both the first order reaction rate constant and ejection fraction in the control, shunted, and the oxandrolone-treated lambs. Both $k_f$ and ejection fraction were found to be more significantly reduced in the shunted lambs compared to the control lambs, and they are increased in oxandrolone-treated lambs. Conclusion: Some improvement was observed in both the first order reaction rate constant and ejection fraction for the lamb treated with oxandrolone in our preliminary study.
