We investigated the half-metallicity and magnetism at the (001) and (110) surfaces of CsSe in cesium chloride and zinc-blende structures by using the all-electron full-potential linearized augmented plane wave method within the generalized gradient approximation. From the calculated local density of states, we found that all the surfaces preserve the half-metallicity of the bulk structures. The surfaces with a greater polarity have stronger ferromagnetic properties when terminated with Se atoms; the non-polar surfaces do not change their electronic or magnetic properties considerably as compared with the bulk structures.
Field-aligned(Birkeland) currents of the High-latitude polar region are to the linkage between the solar wind-magnetosphere system and the ionosphere. The characteristics of field-aligned currents at an attitude of 1300 km have been investigated from the KiSat-A satellite magnetometer data recorded at SatRec form March to May 1993. It is found that the po1arity of both east-west and south-north magnetic components becomes reversed and distorted across the poleward edge. We suggest that these changes May occur rule to the Region 1 and Region 2 currents. It is also suggested that the current time resolution which is about 30 seconds, should be improved to prove gradual polarity changes in the polar region. In addition, it is shown how the observational results depend on the longitude in the high-latitude region.
A new device to accurately deliver small amount of modifier into supercritical carbon dioxide fluid is described. Carbon dioxide, the most widely used mobile phase in supercritical fluid chromatography, is a relatively non-polar fluid, and hence the addition of small amount of polar modifiers could be necessary to migrate polar solutes. In this work, supercritical CO₂and modifier are delivered from the pump to a 100 μL mixing chamber in which a small magnetic bar is rotating. After passing through the mixing chamber, supercritical CO₂is changed to a new mobile phase with different polarity. The amount of modifier added into supercritical CO₂is measured by an amperometric microsensor, which is prepared from a thin film of perfluorosulfonate ionomer.
Recent observational works have reported spiral wave patterns (SWPs) in sunspots, but there is a lack of samples to derive the physical properties. In this presentation, we suggest the automatic method to detect the SWPs in observational data and present their statistical properties. From our method, we find more than 1000 SWPs observed by the Atmospheric Imaging Assembly onboard in the Solar Dynamic Observatory from 2013 to 2018. From our samples, more than half of the SWPs has the one spiral arm. The predominant oscillation period is 2 to 3 minutes. The rotating direction of the spiral arms does not depend on the latitude and the polarity of the sunspots. Our statistical results support the physical model suggested by Kang et al. (2019) that explain the generation of SWPs as the depth of the wave driving source and azimuthal modes in the straight vertical magnetic flux tube.

The fault current limiting characteristics of a flux-lock type superconducting fault current limiter(SFCL) according to fault angles were investigated. From the electrical equivalent circuit with the magnetization branch, the inner magnetic flux of this SFCL due to fault angles was induced and its effect on the limited fault current was analyzed. From the fault current limiting experiments, the exciting current, which described the saturation of the iron core, was calculated and its dependence on the fault angle was analyzed. Before the fault happened, the exciting current did not happen, that it kept zero value. However, after the fault happened, the exciting current flowed and, the exciting current in case of the additive polarity winding showed higher value than for the case of the subtractive polarity winding. The analysis results were compared with the experimental ones, and experimental results agreed with the analysis ones.

We have studied the formation of coronal holes (CHs) associated with halo CMEs. For this study, we used multi-wavelength data from Yohkoh Soft X-ray Telescope (SXT), GOES Soft X-ray Imager (SXI), SOHO EIT 195 ${\AA}$, SOHO MDI magnetogram, MLSO He I 10830 ${\AA}$, and BBSO H-alpha. The CHs are characterized by open magentic field regions with low emission, density, and temperature and their open fields drive high speed solar winds which cause geomagnetic storms. So far, the formation and the evolution of CHs are not well understood. The formation of the dark region associated with the eruption of a CME is well known as "coronal dimming" which may be caused by the mass depletion near the CME footpoint. It is different from a typical CH since it persists for only one or two days. In this study, we present three cases that show the formation of coronal holes which are associated with three halo CMEs: 1) 2000 Jul 14, 2) 2003 Oct 28, 3) 2005 May 13. In the first case, hot plasma was ejected during a weak eruption and then filled out the pre-existing CH. After the halo CME occurred, the hot plasma region becomes a CH again. In the second and the third cases, we found newly formed CHs just after their associated CMEs. All three coronal holes are associated with strong flares and persist over 3 days until they disappeared by the solar rotation. Examining the MDI magnetograms, we found that the magnetic polarity of each CH region has one polarity. Based on these results, we suggest that the coronal holes can be formed by the CMEs and they should be distinguished from the coronal dimming.
A multi-disciplinary geophysical study including gravity, magnetic, and seismic reflection profiling was carried out in the area between the Clarion fracture zone and the Clippertone fracture zone o the northeastern equatorial Pacific basin. There are small free-air gravity anomalies of less than 20 mgal over seamounts and the east-west trending abyssal hills. The negative residual gravity anomalies over seamounts may indicate the existence of low density seamount roots compared to surrounding oceanic crust. Non-existence of magnetic lineations and the magnetic anomalies of small smplitude with no polarity change in the east-west direction support that the study area belongs to the Cretaceous magnetic quite zone. Positive magnetic anomalies over seamounts offset 100 km in the east-west direction in the southern part of the study area suggest a possibility of left-lateral movement of those seamounts along unknown fractures. The sedimentary section in the study area can be divided into three units (Unit I, unit IIA, and Unit IIB) n the basis of reflection characteristics. the total thickness of sedimentary section varies from 200 to 400 meters and the sedimentary section is thicker in the southern area of rough topography near the seamount belt than in the northern flat area. Manganese nodules are abundant in the southern part of the study area where the ridges are developed and the Unit I layer is thicker than 100 meters.

We demonstrate a facile and robust layer-by-layer (LbL) assembly method for the fabrication of nonvolatile resistive switching memory (NRSM) devices based on superparamagnetic nanocomposite multilayers, which allows the highly enhanced magnetic and resistive switching memory properties as well as the dense and homogeneous adsorption of nanoparticles, via nucleophilic substitution reaction (NSR) in nonpolar solvent. Superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (MP) of about size 12 nm (or 7 nm) synthesized with oleic acid (OA) in nonpolar solvent could be converted into 2-bromo-2-methylpropionic acid (BMPA)-stabilized iron oxide nanoparticles (BMPA-MP) by stabilizer exchange without change of solvent polarity. In addition, bromo groups of BMPA-MP could be connected with highly branched amine groups of poly (amidoamine) dendrimer (PAMA) in ethanol by NSR of between bromo and amine groups. Based on these results, nanocomposite multilayers using LbL assembly could be fabricated in nonpolar solvent by NSR of between BMPA-MP and PAMA without any additional phase transfer of MP for conventional LbL assembly. These resulting superparamagnetic multilayers displayed highly improved magnetic and resistive switching memory properties in comparison with those of multilayers based on water-dispersible MP. Furthermore, NRSM devices, which were fabricated by LbL assembly method under atmospheric conditions, exhibited the outstanding performances such as long-term stability, fast switching speed and high ON/OFF ratio comparable to that of conventional inorganic NRSM devices produced by vacuum deposition.
A total of 264 independently oriented core samples were collected from 26 sites in the southwestern part (the Naktong Trough) of the Cretaceous $Ky{\check{o}}ngsang$ Basin in south Korea. The sampled formations comprise the sedimentary Shindong and the Hayang Groups of the Lower Cretaceous age. Alternating field and thermal demagnetizations were conducted. Characteristic remanent magnetization (ChRM) was relatively easily isolated in each formation except in the Chinju formation, from which only remagnetization circles were observed. Even though an extensive use of the fold test was not possible due to the nearly homoclinal nature of the strata in the area, we believe that the ChRM of each formation is of primary origin based on the following grounds: The in-situ ChRM direction of each formation is different from the present geomagnetic field direction. Fisherian precision parameter becomes enhanced through the tilt correction in all formations, closely to the values required for a positive fold test. Three out of the five studied formations pass the reversal test. The mean palaeomagnetic pole position from the studied area is found to be statistically different from the contemporary pole from the Chinese block exclusive of the Shandong area. The difference in magnetic declination suggests a $14.5^{\circ}$ (${\pm}10.5^{\circ}$) clockwise rotation of the studied area relative to the Chinese block comprising the west of the Tan-Lu fault. On the other hand, any significant difference in magnetic inclination and concurrent palaeolatitude is not observed between the studied area and China as well as the other area (Taegu-Andong area) in the $Ky{\check{o}}ngsang$ Basin. The dual nature of the magnetic polarity confirmed in all formations suggests an older than 124 Ma (Neocomian or older) age of the studied sedimentary strata.
This paper proposes an initial rotor magnetic pole detection method for single-phase permanent magnet synchronous motors. The target motor cannot obtain position information based on the back emf in the low speed and stop state. Therefore, an open loop starting process is required, and in this process, initial rotor position information for low current and soft start is need. The proposed initial rotor magnetic pole detection algorithm considers the effect of asymmetric air- gap and magnetic flux. In addition, the high-frequency voltage signal injection and the offset voltage for accurate detection is used. As a result, the permanent magnet poles are is determined by acquiring the maximum value of the induced current using the virtual dq-axis.
