To reduce the processing cost of the single grain REBCO (RE: Rare-earth elements) bulk superconductors, a cost-effective process should be developed. One possible way of developing the cost-effective process is the use of low-cost precursor powders. In this study, the single grain YBCO superconductors were fabricated using a home made powder. $YBa_2Cu_3O_{7-y}$ (Y123) powders were synthesized at $850-900^{\circ}C$ in air by the powder calcination method with repeated crushing and heat treatment steps. The processing parameters for the fabrication of single grain Y123 bulk superconductors, $T_{max}$ (maximum temperature), $T_p$ (peritectic temperature) and a cooling rate through $T_p$ were optimized. To enhance the flux pinning capacity of the single grain Y123 samples, $Y_2BaCuO_5$ (Y211) particles were dispersed in the Y123 matrix by adding $Y_2O_3$ powder to the calcined Y123 powder. Applying the optimized processing condition, the single grain Y123 superconductors with $T_c=91\;K$ and $J_c=1.5{\times}10^4\;A/cm^2$ at 2 T were successfully fabricated using a home made powder. The levitation forces and trapped magnetic field at 77 K measured using a Nd-B-Fe permanent magnet of 5300 G were 47 N and 3000 G, respectively, which are comparable to those obtained for the samples fabricated using a commercial grade Y123 powders.

In order to scrutinize the fluid conductivity effects on the electromagnetic flowmeter(EMF) characteristics, a small scale EMF was designed and fabricated. The measuring tube has a $3mm{\times}4mm$ rectangular cross-section, 9 mm length, and a $2mm{\times}3mm$ plate electrode and a ${\Phi}1.5mm$ point electrode. The design parameters, such as the magnetizing frequency and the number of coil turns, and the diameter were optimized. The EMF was tested with a gravimetric calibrator and showed good linearity in the range of 0 to $1.17{\times}10^{-5}m^3/s$. The fluid conductivity was varied between 3 and $11{\mu}S/cm$, and the magnitude of the flow signal was proportional to the fluid conductivity and the wetted area of the electrode. The design information and the test results provide flow measurement techniques for very low flowrate.
Polymer actuators, which are also called as smart materials, change their shapes when electrical, chemical, thermal, or magnetic energy is applied to them and are useful in wide variety of applications such as microelectromechanical systems (MEMS), machine components, and artificial muscles. For this study, Polyaniline/carbon-nanotube polymer actuator that is one of electroactive polymer actuators was prepared. Since the nonlinear phenomena of hysteresis and a step response are essential considerations for practical use of polymer actuators, we have investigated the movement of the Polyaniline/carbon-nanotube polymer actuator and have developed an integrated model that can be used for simulating and predicting the hysteresis and a step response during actuation. The Preisach hysteresis model, one of the most popular phenomenological models of hysteresis, were used for describing the hysteretic behavior of Polyaniline/carbon-nanotube polymer actuator while the ARX method, one of system identification techniques, were used for modeling a step response. In this paper, we first expain details in preparation of the Polyaniline/carbon-nanotube polymer then present the mathematical description of our model, the extraction of the parameters, simulation results from the model, and finally a comparison with measured data.
Present disquisition proposes an analytical solution method for exploring the buckling characteristics of porous magneto-electro-elastic functionally graded (MEE-FG) plates with various boundary conditions for the first time. Magneto electro mechanical properties of FGM plate are supposed to change through the thickness direction of plate. The rule of power-law is modified to consider influence of porosity according to two types of distribution namely even and uneven. Pores possibly occur inside FGMs due the result of technical problems that lead to creation of micro-voids in these materials. The variation of pores along the thickness direction influences the mechanical and physical properties. Four-variable tangential-exponential refined theory is employed to derive the governing equations and boundary conditions of porous FGM plate under magneto-electrical field via Hamilton's principle. An analytical solution procedure is exploited to achieve the non-dimensional buckling load of porous FG plate exposed to magneto-electrical field with various boundary condition. A parametric study is led to assess the efficacy of material graduation exponent, coefficient of porosity, porosity distribution, magnetic potential, electric voltage, boundary conditions, aspect ratio and side-to-thickness ratio on the non-dimensional buckling load of the plate made of magneto electro elastic FG materials with porosities. It is concluded that these parameters play remarkable roles on the dynamic behavior of porous MEE-FG plates. The results for simpler states are confirmed with known data in the literature. Presented numerical results can serve as benchmarks for future analyses of MEE-FG plates with porosity phases.
Recurrent enhancements of relativistic electron events at geosynchronous orbit (GREEs) were observed in 2006. These GREE enhancements were associated with high-speed solar wind streams coming from the same coronal hole. For the first six months of 2006, the occurrence of GREEs has 27 day periodicity and the GREEs were enhanced with various flux levels. Several factors have been studied to be related to GREEs: (1) High speed stream, (2) Pc5 ULF wave activity, (3) Southward IMF Bz, (4) substorm occurrence, (5) Whistler mode chorus wave, and (6) Dynamic pressure. In this paper, we have examined the effectiveness about those parameters in selected periods.
Objective : There are many cases in which degenerative changes are prevalent in both the cervical and lumbar spine, and the relation between both spinal degenerative findings of MRI is controversial. The authors analyzed the prevalence of abnormal findings on MRI, and suggested a model to explain the relationship between cervical and lumbar disc in asymptomatic Korean subjects. Methods : We performed 3 T MRI sagittal scans on 102 asymptomatic subjects (50 men and 52 women) who visited our hospital between the ages of 14 and 82 years (mean age 46.3 years). Scores pertaining to herniation (HN), annular fissure (AF), and nucleus degeneration (ND) were analyzed. The total scores for the cervical and lumbar spine were analyzed using correlation coefficients and multiple linear regression with various predictive parameters, including weight, height, sex, age, smoking, occupation, and sedentary fashion. Results : The correlation coefficients of HN, AF, and ND were 0.44, 0.50, and 0.59, respectively. We made the best model for relationship by using multiple linear regression. Conclusion : The results of the current study showed that there was a close relationship between the cervical score (CS) and lumbar score (LS). In addition, the correlation between CS and LS, as well as the LS value itself, can be altered by other explanatory variables. Although not absolute, there was also a linear relationship between degenerative changes of the cervical and lumbar spine. Based on these results, it can be inferred that degenerative changes of the lumbar spine will be useful in predicting the degree of cervical spine degeneration in an actual clinical setting.
Objective : Thoracic ossification of the ligamentum flavum (OLF) is a relatively rare disease. Because of ambiguous clinical symptom, it is difficult for early diagnosis of OLF and subsequent treatment can be delayed or missed. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to comprehensively assess the prevalence and distribution of thoracic OLF by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and coexisting spinal disease in Korean patients with back pain or leg pain. Methods : The sample included 2134 Korean patients who underwent MRI evaluation for back pain. The prevalence and distribution of thoracic OLF were assessed using lumbar MRI with whole spine sagittal images. Additionally, we examined the presence of coexisting lumbar and cervical diseases. The presence of thoracic OLF as well as clinical parameters such as age, sex, and surgery were retrospectively reviewed. Results : The prevalence of thoracic OLF in total patients was 16.9% (360/2134). The prevalence tended to increase with aging and was higher in women than in men. The lower thoracic segment of T10-11 was the most frequently affected segment. Of the 360 patients with OLF, 31.9% had coexisting herniated thoracic discs at the same level. Approximately 74% of the patients with OLF had coexisting lumbar and cervical disease. Nine (2.5%) of 360 OLF patients underwent surgery for thoracic lesion. Conclusion : The prevalenceof thoracic OLF was relatively higher than those of previous reports. And coexisting lumbar and cervical disease were very frequent. Therefore, we should check coexisting spinal diseases and the exact diagnostic localization of ossification besides lumbar disease.

Lightning induced faults accounts for more than 66% at the transmission lines of KEPCO. The lightning causes damages to power system equipments including transmission line, the blackout of electricity and the electro-magnetic interference. Because of this reason, we need the real time lightning information for the optimal operation of power system. And, it is required to obtain and accumulate the lightning current parameters for the insulation design. In 2005, KEPRI constructed a lightning detection network, the KLDNet (i.e. Kepco Lightning Detection & Information System) and launched a lightning information service for KEPCO customers. It is intended to provide data service on the operation of transmission lines and collect lightning-related data, which is the most important factor regulating power system design and operation. The new system will replace LPATS, the old detection system, which has been operating since 1995 and is rapidly failing in terms of both detection performance and location accuracy. The purpose of this paper is to explain the work performed and the results of that work in performing a site survey of several locations. The purpose of the site survey is to find locations acceptable for the installation of a lightning location receiver in support of a Lightning detection system(LDS). A restriction was placed on the surveyed locations, as they must belong to the Korea Electric Power Company. This requirement was made to facilitate the communication needs of the LDS network. Total of 15 sites were evaluated as possible LDS sensor sites. Some of the sites were rejected for physical reasons and therefore no electrical testing was performed. Of the 15 sites, total of 10 sites were considered acceptable and 5 sites were rejected for various reason. In this paper, we would like to explain the site survey and detection efficiency for LDS.

In this paper, we analyzed the characteristics of the EM wave absorber which was fabricated by using flake sendust (soft metal magnetic powder). The flake sendust was made of 3 different granularity by attrition mill. First, we have fabricated 3 kind of EM wave absorbers using the flake sendust and CPE(Chlorinated Polyethylene) and measured the S-parameters of the EM wave absorber. The complex relative permittivity and permeability were calculated from the measured data and the variations according to a change of granularity were researched. As a result, it was confirmed that the EM wave absorber using flake sendust with the $140{\mu}m$ average granularity has outstanding absorption ability in high frequency range(C band) for the reduction of eddy current loss(increase of permeability) and the increase of space charge polarization(increase of permittivity).

Ion implantation has been widely developed during the past decades to become a standard industrial tool. To comply with the growing needs in ion implantation, innovative technology for the control of ion beam parameters is required. Beam current, beam profile, ion fractions are of great interest when uniformity of the implant is an issue. Especially, it is important to measure the spatial distribution of beam power and also the energy distribution of accelerated ions. This energy distribution is influenced by the proportion of mass for ion in the plasma generator(ion source) and by charge exchange and dissociation within the accelerator structure and also by possible collective effects in the neutralizer which may affect the energy and divergence of ions. Hydrogen atom has been the object of a good study to investigate the energy distribution. Hydrogen ion sources typically produce multi-momentum beams consisting of atomic ion ($H^+$) and molecular ion ($H_2^+$ and $H_3^+$). In the beam injector, the molecular ions pass through a charge-exchanges gas cell and break up into atomic with one-half (from $H_2^+$) or one-third (from $H_3^+$) according to their accelerated energy. Burrell et al. have observed the Doppler shifted lines from incident $H^+$, $H_2^+$, and $H_3^+$ using a Doppler shift spectroscopy. Several authors have measured the proportion of mass for hydrogen ion and deuterium using an ion source equipped with a magnetic dipole filter. We developed an ion implanter with 50-KeV and 20-mA ion source and 100-keV accelerator tube, aiming at commercial uses. In order to measure the proportion of mass for ions, we designed a filter system which can be used to measure the ion fraction in any type of ion source. The hydrogen and helium ion species compositions are used a filter system with the two magnets configurations.
