We develop forecast models of daily probabilities of major flares (M- and X-class) based on empirical relationships between photospheric magnetic parameters and daily flaring rates from May 2010 to April 2018. In this study, we consider ten magnetic parameters characterizing size, distribution, and non-potentiality of vector magnetic fields from Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO)/Helioseismic and Magnetic Imager (HMI) and Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellites (GOES) X-ray flare data. The magnetic parameters are classified into three types: the total unsigned parameters, the total signed parameters, and the mean parameters. We divide the data into two sets chronologically: 70% for training and 30% for testing. The empirical relationships between the parameters and flaring rates are used to predict flare occurrence probabilities for a given magnetic parameter value. Major results of this study are as follows. First, major flare occurrence rates are well correlated with ten parameters having correlation coefficients above 0.85. Second, logarithmic values of flaring rates are well approximated by linear equations. Third, using total unsigned and signed parameters achieved better performance for predicting flares than the mean parameters in terms of verification measures of probabilistic and converted binary forecasts. We conclude that the total quantity of non-potentiality of magnetic fields is crucial for flare forecasting among the magnetic parameters considered in this study. When this model is applied for operational use, it can be used using the data of 21:00 TAI with a slight underestimation of 2-6.3%.
Solar energetic transients, e.g., flares, CMEs, etc., release large amount of energy which is expected to excite acoustic waves (p-modes) by exerting mechanical impulse of the thermal expansion of the flare on the photosphere. We study the p-mode properties of flaring and dormant active regions (ARs) to find association between flare and p-mode parameters. We compute the magnetic and flare activity indices of ARs using the line-of-sight magnetograms and GOES X-ray fluxes, respectively. The p-mode parameters are computed from the ring-diagram analysis. We correct p-mode parameters for magnetic field, filling factors and foreshortening by multiple linear-regression analysis. Our analysis of several flaring and dormant ARs observed during the Carrington rotations 1980-2109, showed strong association of mode parameters with magnetic and flare activities. We find that the mode parameters are contaminated by the geometrical effect. Mode amplitude decreases with angular distance from the solar disc centre. The mode width increases with magnetic activity while amplitude showed opposite relation due to mode absorption by the sunspot. After correcting modes due to all geometrical effects, magnetic activity and filling factor, we find that the modes amplitude, and mode energy increases with flare energy while width shows opposite relation.
It has been known that the global asteroseismic parameters as well as the stellar acoustic mode parameters vary with stellar magnetic activity. Some solar-like stars whose variations are thought to be induced by magnetic activity, however, show mode frequencies changing with different magnitude and phase unlike what is expected for the Sun. Therefore, it is of great importance to find out whether expected relations are consistently manifested regardless of the phase of the stellar magnetic cycle, in the sense that observations are apt to cover a part of a complete cycle of stellar magnetic activity unless observations span several decades. Here, we explore whether the observed relations of the global seismic parameters hold good regardless of the phase of the stellar magnetic cycle, even if observations only cover a part of the stellar magnetic cycle. For this purpose, by analyzing photometric Sun-as-a-star data from 1996 to 2019 covering solar cycles 23 and 24, we compare correlations of the global asteroseismic parameters and magnetic proxies for four separate intervals of the solar cycle: solar minima ±2 years, solar minima +4 years, solar maxima ±2 years, and solar maxima +4 years. We have found that the photometric magnetic activity proxy, Sph, is an effective proxy for the solar magnetic activity regardless of the phase of the solar cycle. The amplitude of the mode envelope correlates negatively with the solar magnetic activity regardless of the phase of the solar cycle. However, relations between the central frequency of the envelope and the envelope width are vulnerable to the phase of the stellar magnetic cycle.
We present the study of association between sub-photospheric flow and photospheric magnetic fields of active regions respectively derived from the local helioseismology and observed magnetic fields. It is believed that the energetic transients, e.g., flares and CMES, are caused by changes in magnetic and velocity field topologies in solar atmosphere. These changes are essentially brought about by the magnetic fields that are rooted beneath the photosphere where they interact and get affected by sub-photospheric flows. Therefore, we expect the topology of sub-surface flows to be correlated with the observable topology of magnetic fields at the photosphere and higher layers. In order to examine the correlation, if any, we computed the near photospheric flows and photospheric magnetic fields using the Doppler velocity and magnetic fields observations, respectively, provided by the SDO/HMI. The high resolution Doppler observations from the HMI enabled us to compute the very high p-modes parameters which sample the sub-photosphere shallow near the photosphere. Furthermore, we compute the sub-photospheric flow topology parameters, e.g., vorticity, kinetic helicity, and photospheric magnetic field topology parameters, e.g., magnetic helicity, from the magnetic fields observations to compare their associations. We present the result of the analysis in the paper.
We designed an ultra-high frequency (UHF: 300MHz to 3 GHz) ferrite circulator to investigate magnetic parameters, which are suitable for a self-biased GHz circulator design. The size of the ferrite disk was 1.58 mm in thickness and 13.5 mm in diameter. The saturation magnetization ($4{\pi}M_s$) of 3900 Gauss, internal magnetic field ($H_{in}$) of 1 kOe, and ferromagnetic linewidth (${\Delta}H$) of 354 Oe were used in circulator performance simulation. The simulation results show the isolation of 36.4 dB and insertion loss of 2.76 dB at 2.6 GHz and were compared to measured results. A Ni-Zn ferrite circulator was fabricated based on the above design parameters. An out-of-plane DC magnetic field ($H_0$) of 4.8 kOe was applied to the fabricated circulator to measure isolation, insertion loss, and bandwidth. Experimental magnetic parameters for the ferrite were $H_{in}$ of about 1.33 kOe and $4{\pi}M_s$ of 3935 Gauss. The isolation 43.9 dB and insertion loss of 5.6 dB measured at 2.5 GHz are in close agreement with the simulated results of the designed ferrite circulator. Based on the simulated and experimental results, we demonstrate that the following magnetic parameters are suitable for 2 GHz self-biased circulator design: $4{\pi}M_r$ of 3900 Gauss, $H_a$ of 4.5 kOe, $H_c$ greater than 3.4 kOe, and ${\Delta}H$ of 50 Oe.
It is investigated quantitative relations between the magnetic storm magnitude and the solar wind parameters such as the Interplanetary Magnetic Field (hereinafter, IMF) magnitude (B), the southward component of IMF (Bz), and the dynamic pressure during the main phase of the magnetic storm with focus on the role of the interplanetary shock (hereinafter, IPS) in order to build the space weather fore-casting model in the future capable to predict the occurrence of the magnetic storm and its magnitude quantitatively. Total 113 moderate and intense magnetic storms and 189 forward IPSs are selected for four years from 1998 to 2001. The results agree with the general consensus that solar wind parameter, especially, Bz component in the shocked gas region plays the most important role in generating storms (Tsurutani and Gonzales, 1997). However, we found that the correlations between the solar wind parameters and the magnetic storm magnitude are higher in case the storm happens after the IPS passing than in case the storm occurs without any IPS influence. The correlation coefficients of B and $BZ_(min)$ are specially over 0.8 while the magnetic storms are driven by IPSs. Even though recently a Dst prediction model based on the real time solar wind data (Temerin and Li, 2002) is made, our correlation test results would be supplementary in estimating the prediction error of such kind of model and in improving the model by using the different fitting parameters in cases associated with IPS or not associated with IPS rather than single fitting parameter in the current model.

Magnetic nanoparticle based bioseparation in microfluidics is a multiphysics phenomenon that involves interplay of various parameters. The ability to understand the dynamics of these parameters is a prerequisite for designing and developing more efficient magnetic cell/bio-particle separation systems. Therefore, in this work proof-of-concept experiments are combined with advanced numerical simulation to design and optimize the capturing process of magnetic nanoparticles responsible for efficient microfluidic bioseparation. A low cost generic microfluidic platform was developed using a novel micromolding method that can be done without a clean room techniques and at much lower cost and time. Parametric analysis using both experiments and theoretical predictions were performed. It was found that flow rate and magnetic field strength greatly influence the transport of magnetic nanoparticles in the microchannel and control the capturing efficiency. The results from mathematical model agree very well with experiments. The model further demonstrated that a 12% increase in capturing efficiency can be achieved by introducing of iron-grooved bar in the microfluidic setup that resulted in increase in magnetic field gradient. The numerical simulations were helpful in testing and optimizing key design parameters. Overall, this work demonstrated that a simple low cost experimental proof-of-concept setup can be synchronized with advanced numerical simulation not only to enhance the functional performance of magneto-fluidic capturing systems but also to efficiently design and develop microfluidic bioseparation systems for biomedical applications.

Nonpotential characteristics of magnetic fields in AR 5747 are examined using Mees Solar Observatory magnetograms taken on Oct. 20, 1989 to Oct. 22, 1989. The active region showed such violent flaring activities during the observational span that strong X-ray flares took place including a 2B/X3 flare. The magnetogram data were obtained by the Haleakala Stokes Polarimeter which provides simultaneous Stokes profiles of the Fe I doublet 6301.5 and 6302.5. A nonlinear least square method was adopted to derive the magnetic field vectors from the observed Stokes profiles and a multi-step ambiguity solution method was employed to resolve the $180^{\circ}$ ambiguity. From the ambiguity-resolved vector magnetograms, we have derived a set of physical quantities characterizing the field configuration, which are magnetic flux, vertical current density, magnetic shear angle, angular shear, magnetic free energy density, a measure of magnetic field discontinuity MAD and linear force-free coefficient. Our results show that (1) magnetic nonpotentiality is concentrated near the inversion line in the flaring sites, (2) all the physical parameters decreased with time, which may imply that the active region was in a relaxation stage of its evolution, (3) 2-D MAD has similar patterns with other nonpotential parameters, demonstrating that it can be utilized as an useful parameter of flare producing active region, and (4) the linear force-free coefficient could be a evolutionary indicator with a merit as a global nonpotential parameter.
Magnetic seal uses a magnetic fluid to seal a gap between a rotating shaft and housing. It is distinguished from other kinds of seals from the fact that solid contact does not occur in the seal. This implies that it is free from solid rubbing thus dustless and provides a clean circumstance. That is the reason why the magnetic seal is used exclusively for most of vacuum chambers in semiconductor process where dustless clean circumstance is critical. A magnetic seal has been developed of which design parameters are determined based on published data, and an air pressure test has been done to examine its sealing capability. Effects of some design parameters have been studied through FEM analysis. The results show some notable aspects of design parameters and provide suggestions for developing the seals. Regarding the sealing capacity of the magnetic seal the factor to match the theoretical value with the actual one was found to be 0.4~0.7, which means still there is some discrepancy between theory and actual.
In this paper, a new and simple method is proposed to quickly estimate the induced electric field in the human child exposed to a 100 kHz-10 MHz magnetic field, for the sake of electromagnetic field (EMF) safety assessment. The quasi-static finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method is used to calculate the induced electric fields in high resolution 3D human child models with various body size parameters, in order to derive the correction factor for the estimation equation. The calculations are repeated for various frequencies and incident angles of the magnetic field. Based on these calculation results, a new and simple estimation equation for the 99th percentile value of the body electric field is derived that depends on the body size parameters, and the incident magnetic field. The estimation errors were equal to or less than 5.1%, for all cases considered.
