This paper presents an analysis of the permanent magnet overhang effect for the permanent magnetic actuator. Generally, the overhang is often used to increase the force density in permanent magnet machineries. The overhang is particularly profitable in reducing the volume after increasing the force density per volume when using the overhang effect of the permanent magnet. Therefore, the 3D Equivalent Magnetic Circuit Network Method (3D EMCN) has been used in this paper. According to the plunger position, the flux distribution per overhang length and the holding force are quantitatively compared. Furthermore, an appropriate length of the overhang has been proposed. To confirm the accuracy of the analysis method, the results of 2D FEM and 3D FEM are compared for the basic model.

This paper presents the iron core design method of a high temperature superconducting (HTS) transformer considering voltages per turn (V/T). In this research, solenoid type HTS coils were selected for low voltage (LV) winding and double pancake coils for high voltage (HV) winding, just as in conventional large power transformers. V/T is one of the most fundamental elements used in designing transformers, as it decides the core cross sectional area and the number of primary and secondary winding turns. By controlling the V/T, the core dimension and core loss can be changed diversely. The leakage flux is another serious consideration in core design. The magnetic field perpendicular to the HTS wire causes its critical current to fall rapidly as the magnitude of the field increases slowly. Therefore in the design of iron core as well as superconducting windings, contemplation of leakage flux should be preceded. In this paper, the relationship between the V/T and core loss was observed and also, through computational calculations, the leakage magnetic fields perpendicular to the windings were found and their critical current decrement effects were considered in relation to the core design. The % impedance was calculated by way of the numerical method. Finally, various models were suggested.
Diamond-like carbon(DLC) thin films are produced by using a filtered cathodic vacuum arc(FCVA) deposition system. Different magnetic components, namely steering, focusing, and filtering plasma-optic systems, are used to achieve a stable arc plasma and to prevent the macroparticles from incorporating into the deposited films. Effects of magnetic fields on plasma behavior and film deposition are examined. The carbon ion energy is found to be varied by applying a negative (accelerating) substrate bias voltage. The deposition rate of DLC films is dependent upon magnetic field as well as substrate bias voltage and at a nominal deposition condition is about $2{\AA}/s$. The structural properties of DLC films, such as internal stress, relative fraction of tetrahedral($sp^3$) bonds, and surface roughness have also been characterized as a function of substrate bias voltages and partial gas($N_2$) pressures.
Three fabrication techniques for forming thin barrier layer with uniform thickness and large barrier height in magnetic tunnel junction (MTJ) are discussed. First, the effect of immiscible element addition to Cu layer, a high conducting layer generally placed under the MTJ, is investigated in order to reduce the surface roughness of the bottom ferromagnetic layer, on which the barrier is formed. The Ag addition to the Cu layer successfully realizes the smooth surface of the ferromagnetic layer because of the suppression of the grain growth of Cu. Second, a new plasma source, characterized as low electron energy of 1 eV and high density of $10^{12}$$cm^{-3}$, is introduced to the Al oxidation process in MTJ fabrication in order to reduce damages to the barrier layer by the ion-bombardment. The magnetotransport properties of the MTJs are investigated as a function of the annealing temperature. As a peculiar feature, the monotonous decrease of resistance area product (RA) is observed with increasing the annealing temperature. The decrease of the RA is due to the decrease of the effective barrier width. Third, the influence of the mixed inert gas species for plasma oxidization process of metallic Al layer on the tunnel magnetoresistance (TMR) was investigated. By the use of Kr-O$_2$ plasma for Al oxidation process, a 58.8 % of MR ratio was obtained at room temperature after annealing the junction at $300{^{\circ}C}$, while the achieved TMR ratio of the MTJ fabricated with usual Ar-$0_2$ plasma remained 48.4%. A faster oxidization rate of the Al layer by using Kr-O$_2$ plasma is a possible cause to prevent the over oxidization of Al layer and to realize a large magnetoresistance.
SmCo films were deposited on Si(100) substrate by a Nd-YAG pulsed laser ablation of the targets of Sm$\_$100-x/Co$\_$x/ (73$\leq$x$\leq$93) at the substrate temperature of 600∼700$\^{C}$ and the laser beam energy density of Q switching mode or fixed Q mode. The magnetic properties of the films obtained from the Q switching mode exhibited a 4 $\pi$ Ms of 5200∼7700 Gauss, iHc of 190-250 Oe, and 4$\pi$M$\_$r//4$\pi$M$\_$s/ of 0.4∼0.74, respectively, while the fixed Q mode gave the magnetic properties of corresponding films of a 4$\pi$M$\_$r//4$\pi$M$\_$s/ = 0.32∼0.91 and iHc of 430-6290 Oe, respectively. The fixed Q mode gave the better magnetic properties of the SmCo films which seems to be due to a formation of magnetically hard minor phases in droplet of Sm-rich intermetallics. However, the resultant rough surface of the SmCo films is a problem to be solved by a continued study.

We analyzed the temperature dependency of the AC losses in high temperature superconducting (HTS) coils. In the case of a short sample of an HTS tape, the magnetization loss at 4.2 K could be higher than the one at 77 K for a same transport current. It happens when the perpendicular magnetic field is above a certain magnitude. The AC loss characteristics of solenoidal coils have been analyzed at the temperatures of 65 K and 77 K. They were categorized by the aspect ratios. The operating current of a solenoid was normally set about 70 % of the critical current. An HTS solenoid with the same operating current of 77 K causes larger AC losses at 65 K in the most cases of the HTS solenoids. We also analyzed the AC loss characteristics due to the temperature variations for three types of superconducting magnetic energy storages. Two of them were solenoidal types and the other was toroidal type. The results showed the tendency for the coils to have higher AC losses at lower temperature with the same operating currents and scenarios.

In this paper, the electromagnetic force acting in the arc column of 3 different extinction units is compared with using the FEM (Finite Element Method) and the arc velocity is calculated by the drag force of the fluid mechanics. The experiment for breaking the arc current was performed in each model at 100 volts in order to measure the arcing time. The outcome was compared with the computing value. As a result, this paper proposes that the divided U-shaped grid is able to shorten arcing time and improve the electric performance. It also suggests a methodology for comparing and analyzing the result obtained by simulation and experiment.

This paper presents an improved characteristic analysis methodology for a 5-phase hybrid stepping motor. The basic approach is based on the use of equivalent magnetic circuit taking into account the localized saturation throughout the hybrid stepping motor. The finite element method(FEM) is used to generate the magnetic circuit parameters for the complex stator and rotor teeth and airgap considering the saturation effects in tooth and poles. In addition, the neural network is used to map a change of parameters and predicts their approximation. Therefore, the proposed method efficiently improves the accuracy of analysis by using the parameter characterizing localized saturation effects and reduces the computational time by using the neural network. An improved circuit model of 5-phase hybrid stepping motor is presented and its application is provided to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method.
In the present study, bulk anisotropic nanocrystalline $SmCo_5$ magnets were prepared by hot deformation. The effect of deformation temperature on the texture and magnetic properties are presented, based on which the mechanism of plastic deformation and texture formation during the hot deformation process is discussed. Our analyses reveal that deformation temperature is one of the most important parameters that determine the texture of $SmCo_5$ grains. We suggest that diffusion creep plastic deformation occurs during hot deformation, which is very sensitive to the energy gain provided by an increase in temperature.
Co/$Al_O_3$/NiFe and CO/$Al_O_3$/Co tunnel junctions were fabricated by a radio frequency magnetron sputtering at room temperature with hard mask on glass and $4^{\circ}$ tilt cut Si (111) substrates. The barrier layer was formed through two steps. After the Al layer was deposited, it was oxidized in the chamber of a reactive ion etching system (RIE) with $O_2$plasma at various conditions. The dependence of the TMR value and junction resistance on the thickness of Al layer (before oxidation) and oxidation parameters were investigated. Magnetoresistance value of 7% at room temperature was obtained by optimizing the Al layer thickness and oxidation conditions. Circular shape junctions on $4^{\circ}$tilt cut Si (111) substrate showed 4% magnetoresistance. Photovoltaic energy conversion effect was observed with the cross-strip geometry junctions on Si substrate.
