Syenite is not a common rock, unlike granitic rocks formed the major component of the continental crust. The aim of this study is to decipher the occurrences and detailed descriptive characteristics of the syenite distributed in Sancheong area, and to investigate the petrogenesis of the syenitic magma based on geochemical study. The dominant minerals in syenite are alkali feldspar (usually orthoclase and rarely microcline), plagioclase, amphibole, biotite, and quartz. Syenites are found in a wide variety of colors. The anhedral hornblende and biotite filling the boundary of feldspar and quartz indicate that the hydrous minerals were crystallized lately, and that water was insufficient at the beginning of crystallization in magma. According to the analysis of mineral composition, amphibole in syenite is mostly ferro-edenite, and the pressure is calculated as 3.3~4.9 kb with 11.9~17.3 km of emplacement depth. Biotite and pyroxene are plotted in the region of annite and hedenbergite, respectively. Based on petrochemical studies of major elements, syenite belongs to alkaline series, metaluminous, and I-type. On the other hand, the variation patterns of trace and rare earth elements of syenite differ from the patterns of diorite and granite. In the geochemical characteristics, syenite is different from gabbro-diorite spatially adjacent to syenite, as well as granite. These results suggest that each rock has been generated from the different sources of magma. Additionally, based on the experimental data, the syenitic magma can be formed (1) by the partial melting at a high pressure and dry system, (2) when the initial crystallization minerals to be residue with migration of the residual melts separated from the ascending cotectic magma (3) when fluorine compositions to be plentiful in the protolith and/or at depth of the magma. Based on the petrographic characteristics of the syenite, Sancheong syenitic magma may have been formed by partial melting in a dry system.
The purpose of this study is to clarify the nature of the differentiation and petrogenesis of igneous rocks in comparison with experimental results based on petrological and geochemical criteria. Study area is composed of the Precambrian granitic gneiss complex, Triassic meladiorite and biotite granodiorite, Jurassic biotite granite, and Cretaceous quartz porphyry. According to the data of EPMA, the clinopyroxene and orthopyroxene of meladiorite come under salite and hypersthene, respectively. Such results suggests that meladiorite is incipient differentiated products of basic magma under slow cooling condition. The petrochemical data of variation diagram of major element oxides vs. silica and of trace element oxide vs. silica, AMF triangle diagram and trace elements suggests that igneous rocks of study area are plutonic rocks belong to calc alkali rock series of the source of comagma intruded-emplaced in the order of meladiorite, biotite granodiorite and biotite granite by fractional crystallization of magma.
The studied Cretaceous granties are widely distributed at the southern Mungyeong area in the southwestern part of Ogcheon Fold Belt. From the mineralogical and geochemical compositions, it is suggested that they show the characteristics of I-type and magnetite-series and formed under the conditions of high oxygen fugacity. The mineral chemistry of plagioclase, alkali feldspar and biotite in the granites by EMPA, was revealed as albite to oligoclase, microcline to microcline perthite and orthoclase perthite, and annite compositions, respectively. The granites have the distribution patterns of enriched LREE and depleted HREE, and show Eu negative anomalies suggesting mainly due to the feldspar fractionation in the residual magma. The geochemical data of Eu, EU/$^*Eu$, Sm and Gd suggest that the granites of the area have more abundant alkali feldspar crystallization than plagioclase. From the geochemical characteristics of Sr/Ba, La/Sm vs. Ce/Yb and other trace element evidences, the granites were the late stage products of differentiation and fractionated from a homogeneous parental granitic magma.
Behavior of platinum group elements during crystallization within ore magma is of interest. In this study platinum is selected and its mineralogical and geochemical behavior in the presence of antimony and tellurium is investigated at 600$^{\circ}C$. High purity Pt, Sb, and Te are used as starting material and silica quartz tubings are as container. Rection products have been examined by use of ore microscope, X-ray diffractometer, electron microprobe analyser and micro-indentation hardness tester. stable phases at 600$^{\circ}C$ are platinum (Pt), Pt5Sb, Pt3Sb, PtSb, stumpflite (PtSb), geversite (PtSb), PtTe, Pt3Te4, Pt2Te3, moncheite (PtTe2), tellurantimony (Sb2Te3), and antimony (Sb). Geversite is the mineral showing the most significant extent of solid solution by up to 27 at% between Sb and Te elements. Isothermal section of 600$^{\circ}C$ is established in this study. It is noted that platinum cannot coexists with stumpflite or geversite under equilibrium condition, and stumpflite composition in equilibrium with geversite may be used as geothermometer.
Kwangju granite body located in vicinity of Kwangju city consist of three rock bodies-Kwangju rock body, Jangsung rock body and Youngkwang rock body. Petrochemistry of Kwangju granite is as follows: Kwangju granite body is igneous complex which compose of a series of differential products of a magma. Kwangju granites are divided into four rock facies based on the geologic age, mineralogical and chemical constituents and texture: Triassic hornblende-biotite granodiorite and biotite granite, and Jurassic porphyritic granite and two mica granite. Harker and other variation diagrams of Kwangju granites plot on trend of calc-alkali rock series and range of peraluminous granite. Parental magma type of Kwangju granites correspond to I-type, Syn-Collision type in compressive stress field by collision movement between both rock block. In chondrite normalized REE patterns of Kwangju grnites, LREE enriched than HREE in REE amount and have more steep negative slope with slightly (-) Eu anormaly.
The K Ar ages, whole rock geochemistry and Sr Nd Pb isotopes have been determined for the submarine basalts dredged from the P2 and P3 segments of the Antarctic-Phoenix Ridge (APR), Drake Passage, Antarctica, for better understanding on temporal variation of magma chemistry in association with extinction of seafloor spreading. The fossilized APR is distant from the known hot spots, and consists of older N-MORB prior to extinction of spreading and younger E-MORB after extinction. The older N-MORB (3.5-6.4 Ma) occur in the southeast flank of the P3 segment (PR3) and the younger E-MORB (1.4-3.1 Ma) comprise a huge seamount at the P3 segment (SPR) and a big volcanic edifice at the P2 segment (PR2). The N-type PR3 basalts have higher Mg#, K/Ba, and CaO/Al2O3 and lower Zr/Y, Sr, and Na8.0 with slight enrichment in incompatible elements and almost flat REE patterns. The E-type SPR and PR2 basalts are highly enriched in incompatible elements and LREE. The extinction of spreading occurring at 3.3 Ma seems to have led to a temporal magma oversupply with E-MORB signatures. Geochemical signatures such as Ba/TiO2, Ba/La, and Sm/La suggest heterogeneity of upper mantle and formation of E-MORB by higher contribution of enriched materials to mantle melting, compared to N-MORB environment. E-MORB magmas beneath the APR seem to have been produced by low melting degree (up to 1% or more) at deeper low-temperature regime, where metasomatized veins consisting of pyroxenites have preferentially participated in the melting. The occurrence of E-MORB at the APR is a good example to better understand what kinds of magmatism would occur in association with extinction of spreading.
The Samrangjin Caldera, a trapdoor-type, formed by the voluminous eruption of the silicic ash-flows of the Samrangjin Tuff which is above 630m thick at the northern inside of the caldera and thinnerly 80m at the southern inside. The caldera volcanism eviscerated the magma chamber by a series of explosive eruptions during which silicic magma was ejected to form the Samrangjin Tuff. The explosive eruptions began with phreatoplinian eruption, progressed through small plinian eruption and transmitted with ash-flow eruption. During the ash-flow eruption, contemporaneous collapse of the roof of the chamber resulted in the formation of the Samrangjin caldera, a subcircular depression subsiding above 550m deep. During postcaldera volcanism after the collapse, flow-banded rhyolite was emplaced as cental plug along the central vent and ring dikes along the caldera margins. Subsequently rhyodacite porphyry and dacite porphyry were emplaced along the inner side of the ring dike. After their emplacement, residual magma was emplaced as a hornblende biotite granite stock into the southwestern caldera margin. In the northeastern part, the eastern dikes were cut final intrusions of granodioritic to granitic composition along the fault zone of $^{\circ}$W trend.
The Mt. Dungjuribong Volcanic Complex located in Gurye-gun, southwest of Ryeongnam massif, composed of Cretaceous andesitic rocks and rhyolite. $SiO_2$ contents of the volcanic rocks range from 52.0 to 78.5 wt.%. The major and trace elements composition, REE patterns and tectonomagmatic discrimination diagrams of volcanic rocks suggest that they are typical of continental margin arc calc-alkaline rocks produced in the subduction environment. The phenocrysts of the volcanic rocks show that they had gone in disequilibrium state, such as reversal zoning and resorbed core of plagioclase, reaction rim around pyroxene and resorbed margins of quartz, which showing the evidence of magma mixing during the evolution of magma.
