  • The Miocene volcanic rocks in the Eoil Basin, which is one of the pull-apart basins in the southeastern Korean Peninsula, are bimodal in composition: felsic (67.2-70.5wt.% SiO$_2$) and mafic(49.3-55.2wt.% SiO$_2$). The bimodal volcanic activities in the basin appear to be closely associated with the basin development. The volcanic rocks are intercalated with thick Files of sedimentary sequence. They show evidence of magma mixing. which has produced mafic and felsic volcanic rocks. We are able to identify the petrographic characteristics (disequilibrium phenocryst assemblages) of the volcanic rocks that were mixed. In basaltic lava, phenocrysts of olivine and orthopyroxene coexist with corroded quartz phenocryst. Dacitic to rhyolitic welded ash-flow tuff contains phenocrysts of clinopyroxene and orthopyroxene. It suggests that phenocryst disequilibrium have been affected and mixed by magmas, which have different compositions.

  • Microlite is crystallized under the supercooled condition of volcanic magma. This study reports the morphology and texture of microlites included in the obsidians from the Baekdusan (Mt. Baekdu), Kyushu (Japan), Hokkaido (Japan) and Lipari Island (Italy) by using a scanning electron microscope (SEM). Morphology and texture observed from the back scattered electron (BSE) image could give more detailed information on the microlite crystallization which cannot be acquired from the conventional optical microscope. Ten types of microlites are newly described according to the 14 morphological types of microlites by Clark (1961): Lath, Crenulite, Bacillite, Margarite, Belonites, Trichites, Arculites, Furculite, Scopulites, Scopulitic growth. Detailed description of the ten microlites can be used to interpret the crystallization and paragenetic relations of crystals during the cooling of acidic volcanic magma.

  • This paper reports the results of the eruption of a volcano on Jeju Island at a certain rate, and the tumulus formed after the eruption and the basalt that erupted from the middle of Mt. Halla washed up to the sea. We analyzed the speed when basalt underground magma breaks through the neutral zone on the ground with an absolute temperature of about 1000K and explodes at an absolute temperature of 1200K at an altitude of 1950m. The density of combustion gas becomes smaller than the surrounding air due to the plume volcanic eruption, which is the heat flow of the flame column due to buoyancy, and buoyancy is generated and an updraft is formed. Flame pillars are classified as continuous, intermittent, and buoyant flame zones. As the speed of the flame pillar of Mt. Halla (1950m) falls from the highest point it has risen, potential energy is converted into kinetic energy and is caused by the flow of fluid, solving these two equations equal, the volcanic eruption velocity is 87.5 m/s. At this time, the density of magma is inversely proportional to the temperature. Geomunoreum (456m) had an explosion speed of 42.6m/s.

  • Songaksan, formed about 3800 year ago, is one of the tuff rings in the Jeju Island. Mantle xenoliths, spinel peridotites, are enclosed in the Songaksan Trachybasalt. The spinel peridotites are less than 2 cm in size and are composed of olivine, orthopyroxene, clinopyroxene, and spinel. The uniform compositions of the minerals from core to rim indicate that equilibrium was reached in the spinel peridotites before these were enclosed in the host magma. The spinel peridotites originated at depths between 55 and 60 km with equilibrium temperatures ranging from 915 to 968℃. The spinel peridotites from Songaksan reveal porphyroclastic texture with a lot of neoblast minerals. Olivines display strong kink banding, indicating that the upper mantle of Songaksan has been deformed. The spinel peridotites from Songaksan have undergone about 5~7% fractional melting, and cryptic metasomatism by an silicate melt. The period of entrainment and transport of the spinel peridotites in the host magma is about 15 days.

  • The granites in the southern Gimcheon area can be divided into two parts, marginal hornblende biotite granodiorite (Mgd) and central biotite granodiorite to granite (Cgd). Mgd and Cgd are gray in color and display gradational contact relations and are mainly composed of coarse-grained and medium-grained rocks, respectively. Mgd has more frequent and larger mafic enclaves than Cgd, and the two granites partly show parallel foliation at thire contact with gneisses. From representative samples of the granites, K-Ar biotite ages of 197∼207 Ma were obtained. Considering the blocking temperature of biotite, it is suggested that the emplacement age of the granitic magma was probably late Triassic. The anorthite contents of plagioclases in Mgd display less variation than those of Cgd, indicating that Mgd crystallized within a narrow range of temperatures. In the Al$\_$total/-Mg diagram, the biotites from the granites plot within the subalkaline field, and the smooth slope indicates differentiation from a single magma. All amphiboles from the granites belong to magnesio-hornblende. The linear trends of major oxides, AFM and Ba-Sr-Rb indicate that Mgd and Cgd were fractionally differentiated from a single granitic magma body crystallizing from the margin inwards. The relations of modal (Qz+Af) vs. Op, K$_2$O vs. Na$_2$O, Fe$_2$ $O_3$ vs. FeO, Fe$\^$+3/(Fe$\^$+3/+Fe$\^$+2/) and K/Rb vs. Rb/Sr show that they belong to I-type and magnetite-series granitic rocks developed by the progressive melting products of fixed sources. REE data, normalized to chondrite value, have trends of enriched LREE and depleted HREE together with weakly negative Eu anomalies.

  • A study of the fracture systems in outcrops of southern onshore Vietnam revealed two kinds of fracture groups according to their origin: cooling fractures and deformation related fractures. Cooling of magma introduced extensive fractures in the batholiths with wide spacing and narrow aperture. They are found widespread in all magmatic bodies, but result in poor reservoir quality due to low bulk porosity and narrow aperture. Cooling fractures are often reactivated during later stress regimes. Deformation related fractures, especially 'fault damage zones' and 'hanging wall deformation' is thought to form the most important reservoir type in the fractured basement rock. The porosity formed by intense fracturing and fault breccia along minor fault zones is thought to be the producing zones in the producing fields of Cuu Long basin. They are found along major faults and widespread in hanging wall blocks.

  • The Cretaceous granites are widely distributed in the studied area, Mungyeong-Sangju, which belongs to the southwestern part of the Ogcheon Folded Belt. The granites are characterized by medium-coarse grained, spotted miaroles, partly flow textures of biotite, aplitic dykes and pegmatitic pockets with druse. From the major compositions, the granites indicate peraluminous, calc-alkaline, salic and late stage products of differentiation. In the view of normative compositions of Qz-Ab-Or and perthitic alkali feldspar, they were formed under 1-4kb and $426^{\circ}-456^{\circ}C$ in acqueous conditions. The K/ Ar biotite age shows $72{\pm}1$ Ma for this grante, corresponding to the igneous activity of the Bulgugsa Disturbance periods in the area. The above results represent that these granite bodies are differentiated from a single magma.

  • In the manufacturing process of metal matrix composites parts, thixoforging is one of the most effective forming processes. The major purpose of the current study is to provide the proper conditions such as the die shape, the forging velocity, the forging time, the forging pressure and reinforcement injection velocity and pressure on various defects in thixoforged cylinder liner, filling tests were performed by MAGMA S/W. In order to evaluate the effectiveness of the calculated conditions which is given by computer aided engineering, A357, A380 and SiC$_{p}$/A380 cylind~5$mu extrm{m}$r liner were fabricated under the calculated conditions. SiC$_{p}$/A380 composite billets were fabricated by both the mechanical stirring and electrical magnetic stirring process. Incase fo SiC$_{p}$/A380 composite cylinder liner, reinforcement distribution and effect of reinforcement(SiC$_{p}$) content(10~20 vol. %)and size(5.5~14${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$) on the mechanical properties were investigatedstigated.

  • The semi-solid processing is now becoming of great interest for the production of various parts by pressure die casting. Also, the rheo-casting has been substituted for thixo-casting, because the rheo-casting can control the solid particles to globular and non-dendritic solid phase. In the rheo-casting process, the important thing is to control the solid particles behavior in semi-solid materials. So in this paper, to control solid particles behavior in semi-solid materials, we experimented about the die filling tests during the semi-solid die casting in 0.3, 0.4, 0.5 and 0, 6 solid fraction. The die filling in semi-solid die casting were simulated by MAGMA soft/thixo module. By the die filling tests and computer simulation, the effect of solid particles behavior in rheology flow had been investigated.
