Because maglev trains have a propulsion and absorption force without contact with the rails, they can drive safely at high-speed with little oscillation. Recently, test model of a maglev propulsion train was produced and operated, and has since been chosen as a national growth industry in South Korea; there have been many studies and considerable investment in these fields. This study examined the dynamic responses due to bridge-maglev train interaction and basic material to design bridges for maglev trains travelling at high-speed. Depending on the major factors affecting the dynamic effects, the scope of this study was restricted to the relationship between dynamic responses. A concrete box girder was chosen as a bridge model and injured train and rail types in domestic production were selected as the moving train load and guideway analysis model, respectively. From the analysis results, the natural frequency of a bridge for a maglev train, which has a deflection limit L/2000, was higher than those of bridges for general trains. The dynamic responses of the girder of the bridge for a maglev train showed a substantial increase in proportion to the velocities of the moving train like other general bridge cases. Maximum dynamic response of the girder is shown at a moving velocity of 240km/h and increased with increasing moving velocity of train. These results can be used to design a bridge for maglev propulsion trains and provide the basic data to confirm the validity and verification of the design code.

Recently, an interest in a hybrid system combining only the merits of the conventional wheel-rail system and Maglev propulsion system is growing as an alternative to high-speed maglev train. This hybrid-type system is based on wheel-rail method, but it enables to overcome the speed limitation by adhesion because it is operated by a non-contact method using a linear motor as a propulsion system and reduce the overall construction costs by its compatibility with the conventional railway systems. Therefore, the design and characteristic analysis of a coreless-type superconducting Linear Synchronous Motor (LSM) for 600km/h very high speed railway system are conducted in this paper. The designed coreless-type superconducting LSMs are the distributed winding model, the concentrated 1 layer winding model and the concentrated 2 layer winding model, respectively. In addition, the characteristic comparison studies on each LSM are conducted.

In this paper, a study on the efficiency improvement of the magnetic levitation train using the LIM (Linear Induction Motor) was presented. The maglev train has the advantage of being environmentally friendly since much less noise and dust is produced. However, due to structural limitation, compared to a rotating induction motor, linear induction motor, the main propulsion engine of the maglev train has a relatively greater air gap and hence has the lower operation efficiency. In this paper, the relationship between the operating condition of the train and the slip frequency has been investigated to find out the optimum slip frequency that might improve the efficiency of the magnetic levitation train with linear induction motor. The slip frequency is variable during the operation by this relationship only within a range that does not affect the levitation system of the train. After that, the comparison of the efficiency between the conventional control method with the slip frequency fixed at 13.5[Hz] and the proposed method with the slip frequency variable from 9.5[Hz] to 6.5[Hz] has been conducted by simulation using Simplorer. Experiments of 19.5[ton] magnetic levitation trains owned by Korea Institute of Machinery and Materials were carried out to verify the simulation results.
The Maglev train is operated by levitating from a power of a large number of magnets and moving without direct contact to railway track so that reduces noise and vibration due to mechanical friction. Also, the Maglev passes sharp curves and steep hill without any difficulties. The Maglev has a potential to be an alternative transport system urban areas. For successful commercializing of Maglev, the organization of interface for safety and reliability of third rail system are one of the key considerations. Especially, the components of the third rail system, such as power rail, expansion joints, FRP section insulator, and supporter with epoxy insulator, should be durable, convenient for construction, and easy to maintenance. This paper analyzes the characteristics of the third rail system components and proposes organization of interface for system engineering. The operating tests of KIMM for the proposed third rail system verify the safety. Also, this paper analyzes the life cycle of the system components to improve the system reliability and evaluation.
Parameter analysis of a pretension girder bridge for urban maglev transit was performed to identify the main design parameters and their effect. Girder deflection at mid-span is the most important design criteria of urban maglev transit. Therefore, concrete compressive strength, girder height, girder length, and unbonded tendon length were selected as the design parameters that relate to girder deflection. In addition, tendon layout and unbonded tendon ratios were also considered as design parameters to control the top stress of the pretension girder section at the support. The analysis results show that both the girder height and length are dominant design parameters governing girder deflection, more important than compressive strength and unbounded tendon length. And, sensitivity analysis makes this study suggest design weight value. In terms of stress, a tendon layout that can satisfy the unbounded tendon rule requires an additional tendon or rebar at the upper section to control the tensile stress on top of the section. Therefore, to improve feasibility and constructability in the future, an enhanced unbonded tendon rule considering the load characteristics of the urban maglev system should be studied.

Since it started the researches on a maglev train on 1960, Germany and Japan arrived to putting to practical use level and accomplished most tests from their test-line. Korea is in progress the preparation for a practical use of low-speed maglev train in 110 [km/h] class and Korea Railroad Research Institute(KRRI) is in progress of a research about core technology of maglev system for high-speed tube train of 700 [km/h] class. In this paper, authors suggest an effective design method of Linear Synchronous Motor(LSM) for high-speed tube train of 700 [km/h] class which has a wound type electro-magnet. Then, authors calculate a variety of properties by changing speed of the LSM model which is designed by a method based on some theoretical equations. Then, authors verify the validity of the method based on some theoretical equations through a verification of property values by Finite Element Method(FEM) analysis method. Finally, in order to design a shape of pole-shoe part of LSM electro-magnet which is hard to design with a basic design method, authors analyze a transition of property values by changing a pole-shoe width and current of the electro-magnet through an analytical method by FEM.
A novel hybrid carrier-based pulse width modulation (CBPWM) scheme that combines unipolar and dipolar modulations is proposed for single-phase three-level rectifiers, which are widely applied in railway traction drive systems. The proposed CBPWM method can satisfy the volt-second balancing principle in the complete modulation index region through overmodulation compensation. The modulation scheme features two modulation modes: unipolar and dipolar. The operation range limits of these modulation modes can be modified by changing the separation coefficient. In comparison with the traditional unipolar CBPWM, the proposed hybrid CBPWM scheme can provide advantageous features, such as lower high-order harmonic distortion of the line current and better utilization of switching frequency. The separation coefficient value is optimized to achieve the maximum utilization of these advantages. The experimental results verify the feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed hybrid CBPWM scheme.
EMS-type Maglev vehicle maintains constant levitation air-gap between electromagnet and guideway by using gap sensor. The other words, when Maglev vehicles levitating over the guideway, mass of the vehicle effects through 1st (electromagnetic air-gap control) and 2nd (air-spring) suspension to grider. Resonace between electromagnetic suspension and grider could be occurred, which causes instability and poor ridecomfort. This paper is to test the dymanic interaction between levitation air-gap and switching system grider that has less mass and high natural frequencies than other type of general girders.
One of the major trends in traction power electronics is increasing the switching frequencies. The advances in the frequency elevation have made it possible to reduce the total size and weight of the passive components such as capacitors, inductors and transformers in the DC/DC converter and hence to increase the power density. The traction dynamic performance is also improved. This document describes several aspects relating to the design of resonant DC/DC converter operating at high frequency(10KHz) and the converter topologies and the control method of MAGLEV, which result in soft switching, are discussed.

EMC (Electro Magnetic Compatibility) of the electrical railway must be ensured for safety of passenger. Maglev trains has not friction between the wheels and the rails because levitation by an permanent magnets, electromagnets and superconducting magnets etc. So, it is advantageous to maintain a high speed without noise and vibrations. In this paper, we investigated that the magnetic field of the before and after installation electromagnetic waves absorber in order to analyze the effects of electromagnetic waves. The theoretical analysis of the electromagnetic wave absorber was simulated using finite element method. The magnetic field properties of electromagnetic waves absorber were measured by EMI (Electro Magnetic Interference) test receiver.
