  • This study was attempted to investigate the processes of regression of the corpus luteum and uterus after parturition in 2∼3 multiparous Korean native goats. The concentrations of LH, prolactin and progesterone in blood plasma of native goats were measured at 5 day intervals from 10 days prepartum to 35 days postpartum. The pregnancy corpus luteum from goats at Days(D) 1, 10, 20 and 30 days of postpartum were examined by light microscopy. Changes in the uterus fo goats were studies by macroscopic and light microscopic observations during the postpartum period. Mean concentrations of plasma LH were low after parturition and the levels of plasma LH were similar during late gestation and throughout the postpartum period. Mean plasma concentrations of prolactin were 0.30 0.06 and 0.38 0.13ng/ml at Day 5 and Day 10 prepartum, respectively, but PRL levels remained slightly high for 5 weeks after kidding. Mean levels of progesterone in plasma were 0.33 0.05ng/ml on Day 1 postpartum(P<0.01). Through light microscopic survey, pregnancy corpora lutea were quite degeneration by day 10 pospartum. Microscopic changes of CL regression consisted of cytoplasmic eosinophilia and vacuolation, and pyknosis and karyorrhexis of the nucleus of luteal cells. Vascular changes were distended at the periphery ofthe CL. From macroscopic measurements of the uterus, the uteri were returned to their initial non-pregnant stage within a period of 21 dyas after parturition. Following partuition the intercaruncular epithelium was reparied by 20 days. The uterine epithelium was partially recovered in the carucle by 30 days postpartum.

  • Spray characteristics of diesel fuel injection is one of the most important factors in diesel combustion and pollutant emissions especially in HSDI (High Speed Direct Injection) diesel engines where the interval between the onset of combustion and the evaporation of atomized fuel is relatively short, An investigation into various spray characteristics from different holes of VCO(Valve Covered Orifice) nozzles was performed and its results were compared to standard sac nozzle. The global characteristics of spray, including spray angle, spray tip penetration, and spray pattern were measured from the spray images which were frozen by an instantaneous photography with a spark light source. For better understanding of spray behavior, SMD of the fuel sprays from multi hole nozzles were measured with back light imaging while the sprays from the other holes are covered by a purpose-built nozzle cap. The investigation manifestly reveals the different spray patterns at the beginning of injection produced by VCO nozzles can be identified as three distinct types with their own macroscopic and microscopic characteristics, while macroscopic non-uniformity disappears at 0.9∼1.0ms from the start of injection.

  • The concept of the seismic slit shear wall was proposed in the early 1990's. A series of experimental and theoretic studies on the wall with reinforced concrete short connecting beams cast in the slit were carried out. In this paper another type of slit shear wall is studied. It is one with vertical slit purposely cast within the wall, and the rubber belt penetrated by a part of web shear reinforcement as seismic energy-dissipation device is filled in the slit. Firstly, an experiment under cyclic loading was carried out on two shear wall models, one slit and the other solid. The failure mechanism and energy-dissipation capacity are compared between the two different models, which testifies the seismic performance of the slit wall improved significantly. Secondly, for engineering practice purpose, a macroscopic analytical model is developed to predict the nonlinear behavior of the slit shear wall under cyclic loading. The mechanical properties of each constituent elements of this model are based on the actual behavior of the materials. Furthermore, the effects of both the axial force and bending moment on the shear behavior are taken into account with the aid of the modified compression-field theory. The numerical results are verified to be in close agreement with the experimental measurements.

  • The present work was aimed to show the possibility of using hydrogel (acrylic/boric acid) for evaluation of the neutron radiation shielding. The influence of acrylic acid concentration, different gamma doses and relative contents of boric acid were studied. The physical properties and the thermomechanical stability of the studied samples were investigated. The shielding property of the composite for neutron was tested by Pu-Be neutron source (5 Ci) under room temperature. The neutron fluence rates and gamma fluxes were measured using a stilbene organic scintillator. The macroscopic effective removal cross-section ΣR (cm-1) of fast neutrons and total attenuation coefficient μ (cm-1) of gamma rays has been studied experimentally. The transmission parameters, the relaxation length (??) and the half-value layer (HVL) were obtained. The obtained results indicated that the addition of boric acid to acrylic acid tends to increase the macroscopic effective removal cross-section ΣR (cm-1) to 0.141 compared to 0.094 of ordinary concrete.

  • Phenological study of Enteromorpha compressa was conducted monthly from May 1990 to April 1991 in tide pools at three tidal zones of Paekpori, the southern coast of Korea. Although water temperature did not differ significantly among all tidal zones investigated, absence of macroscopic plants during summer was correlated with increasing water temperature. Salinity and suspended particulate matter (SPM) showed statistical differences between high and middle tidal zones, as well as high and low tidal zones. But, the differences in salinity or SPM among tidal zones did not comparatively coincide with the phenological pattern. The frequencies of occurrence of microscopic and macroscopic samples at high tidal zone were always lesser than or equal to those at other zones. At high tidal zone individuals completed the life history at least twice in a year, surviving for about four months, whereas at low and middle tidal zones they completed it once in a year, surviving for about six months.months.

  • Double coaxial are jets(annular and coaxial air jets) between which propane gas is fed was selected to study the structure of diffusion flames in turbulent shear flow. Schlieren and direct photographs are taken to visualize the flame structure. Mean and fluctuating temperatures and ion currents were measured to investigate the macroscopic and the instantaneous flame structure. The objective of this study is to understand the interaction between combustion and mixing process especially in the transition region of turbulent shear flow. The investigation reported in this paper focuses on the macroscopic and the instantaneous structures of three flames obtained. The increased mixing effect resulting from increase of Reynolds number of central air jet makes the flame bluish and short. When the velocity of surrounding air stream is higher than that of central air jet, the instantaneous flame structure is composed of coherent structure. It is considered that the flame structure of transitional region of mixing layer depends on the structure of mixing layer of non-reacting conditions.

  • The study is to investigate the mixing stability, fuel properties, and macroscopic spray characteristics of diesel-gasoline blended fuels in a common-rail injection system of a diesel engine. The test fuels were mixed diesel with gasoline fuel, which were based volume fraction of gasoline from 0 to 100% in 20% intervals. In order to analyze the blended effect of gasoline to diesel fuel, the properties of test fuels such as density, viscosity, and surface tension were measured. In addition, the spray behavior characteristics were studied by investigating the spray tip penetration and spray angle using a spray images through a spray visualization system. It was revealed that the density, kinematic viscosity and surface tension of diesel-gasoline blending fuels were decreased with the increase of gasoline fuel. The injection quantity of test fuels were almost similar level at short energizing duration condition. On the other hand, the increase of energizing duration shows the decrease of injection quantity compared to short energizing duration. The test blending fuels have similar growth in Spray tip penetration and Spray cone angle.

  • Fracture of Al2O3 tubes for different loading path under combined tension/torsion was investigated. Macroscopic directions of crack propagation agreed well with the maximum principal stress criterion, independent of the loading path. However, fracture strength from the proportional loading test($\tau$/$\sigma$= constant) showed either strengthening or weakening compared to that from uniaxial tension, depending on the ratio $\tau$/$\sigma$. The Weibull theory was capable to predict the strengthening of fracture strength in pure torsion, but not the weakening in the proportional loading condition. The strengthening or weakening of fracture strength in the proportional loading condition was explained by the effect of shear stresses in the plane of randomly oriented microdefects. Finally, a new empirical fracture criterion was proposed. This criterion is based on a mixed mode fracture criterion and experimental data for fracture of Al2O3 tubes under combined tension/torsion. The proposed fracture criterion agreed well with experimental data for both macroscopic directions of crack propagation and fracture strengths.

  • The protons and helium ions in the solar wind are observed to possess anisotropic temperature profiles. The anisotropy appears to be limited by various marginal instability conditions. One of the efficient methods to investigate the global dynamics and distribution of various temperature anisotropies in the large-scale solar wind models may be that based upon the macroscopic quasi-linear approach. The present paper investigates the proton and helium ion anisotropy instabilities on the basis of comparison between the quasi-linear theory versus particle-in-cell simulation. It is found that the overall dynamical development of the particle temperatures is quite accurately reproduced by the macroscopic quasi-linear scheme. The wave energy development in time, however, shows somewhat less restrictive comparisons, indicating that while the quasi-linear method is acceptable for the particle dynamics, the wave analysis probably requires higher-order physics, such as wave-wave coupling or nonlinear wave-particle interaction. We carried out comparative studies of proton firehose instability, aperiodic ordinary mode instability, and helium ion anisotropy instability. It was found that the agreement between QL theory and PIC simulation is rather good. It means that the quasilinear approximation enjoys only a limited range of validity, especially for the wave dynamics and for the relatively high-beta regime.
