This study was conducted to describe the community structure of macrobenthos in Aenggang Bay, the southern coast of Korea. Sampling was performed seasonally using van Veen grab from October 1994 to August 1995. A total of 233 species occurred; polychaetes accounted for 90 species, crustaceans 66 species, and mollusks 46 species. The mean density of macrobenthos was 1,358 ind./$m^2$, and polychaetes accounted for 64% of total abundance with its density of 874 ind./$m^2$. Mean macrobenthic biomass was 261.96 gWWt/$m^2$, and echinoderms accounted for 52.6% of total biomass with its biomass of 137.76 gWWt/$m^2$. Dominant species were a serpulid worm, Ditrupa arientina (245 ind./$m^2$), a cirratulid worm, Tharyx sp. (166 ind./$m^2$), and a scaphopod Fustaria nipponica (132 ind./$m^2$). Ditrupa arientina and Fustaria nipponica were distributed mainly in the mouth of Aenggang Bay, whereas Tharyx sp. showed its high density in the central region of the bay. The study area showed a regional difference in species richness, abundance, and biomass; the eastern region of the bay sustained relatively more abundant and richer macrobenthos than the western part. The study area could be divided into 5 regions by the cluster analysis based on the species composition of macrobenthos; the inner bay, two central regions, and two mouth areas of the bay.

To determine the composition of benthic species on the southwest coast, a macrobenthos study was conducted at 18 sites on the islands of Wando and Jodo for seven summers (2014-2021) from June to September. Two hundred and twenty species(645 ind./m2) were collected on the rocky shores of Wando and Jodo. A similar number of species was observed in Wando (165 species) and Jodo (167 species). The mean density was higher in Wando (726 ind./m2) than in Jodo (564 ind./m2). The number of species was the highest at Site 15 (116 species), and the density was highest at Site 7 (1,664 ind/m2). The dominant species were Nodilittorina radiata with 175 ind./m2 (27.1%), Littorina brevicula with 97 ind./m2 (15.1%), and Heminerita japonica with 41 ind./m2 (6.3%). The climate change indicator species, Tetraclita japonca, appeared in 15 sites, and the endemic species, Ptilohyale bisaeta, appeared in some sites. Fusinus spectrum, which appears on the Red List as a Near Threatened (NT) species, the lowest level of extinction risk, appeared in Jodo. The macrobenthos of Wando and Jodo demonstrated the general characteristics of rocky shores in Korea. Based on the tides and substrate, the rocky shores revealed a vertical distribution trend where Nodilittorina radiata, Littorina brevicula, Chthamalus challengeri, and Reishia clavigera were dominant. Wando and Jodo exhibited similar habitat distribution patterns.
The study was performed in order to understand the association between organic matter content in the sediments and the distribution of macrobenthos in the intertidal zone of the Muan bay. The sediment samples obtained from 21 sampling sites in August 2019 were analyzed for sediment composition and organic matter content (Ignition loss; IL and Total organic carbon; TOC). Further the macro benthos was sorted and enumerated. The sediments of inner area of bay has coarser composition where mouth part of bay, the sediments were predominantly silty. The highest organic matter content (both of IL and TOC) was measured at station 10 located near the Mokpo area while the lowest values was measured at station 20 adjacent to the north side of the bay. The 4 most abundant species accounted for more than 10% of all specimens were Assiminea sp., Musculista senhousia, Cerithideopsilla cingulate and Heteromastus filiformis. The maximum number of species and density were observed at station 10. Cluster analysis and non-metric multidimensional scaling (MDS) allow identification of four benthic assemblages based on species abundance. The correlation analysis revealed that there was a significant difference (p<0.05) in the density with TOC. Based on the analysis; it was found that the distribution of macrobenthos varied with the differences in sediment composition and organic matter content.
In this study, we investigated changes in the macrobenthic community in Sihwa tidal flat before and after the operation of a Tidal Power Plant (TPP). In order to investigate changes in the macrobenthic community structure, field surveys were conducted at eighteen stations in 4 transect lines every September from 2011 to 2015. Mean density of macrobenthos decreased to $116ind./m^2$ in 2015 from $1,602ind./m^2$ in 2011. While the mean density of macrobenthos has decreased, species richness and biomass have gradually increased. The species diversity and SEP (Shannon-wiener Evenness Proportion) have also gradually increased over time since the operation of the TPP. The macrobenthic community in Sihwa tidal flat was divided into 4 groups on a yearly base. Before the operation of TPP, opportunistic species such as Neanthes succina and Polydora cornuta largely contributed to the structure of the macrobenthic community, while equilibrium species such as Periserrula leucophryna and Scopimera globosa contributed after the operation. With the operation of TPP, the macrobenthic community has rapidly recovered and this might be related to improvement in the quality of water and sedimentary environments as a result of an increase in water mass volume exchanged through the TPP gate.
Investigations were made on the community structure of macrobenthos in the subtidal soft bottom around semi-enclosed Youngsan River estuarine bay, southwest coast of Korea during the period from April 1995 to February 1996. Three macrobenthos samples were collected at 40 stations using a van Veen grab(0.1 m^2) during the study period. A total of 206 species of macrobenthos was identified. Their mean density and biomass (wet-weight, wwt) were $1,137 ind./m^2$ and $65.28 gwwt/m^2$, respectively. Of these, there were 74 species of polychaetes ($36\%$), 60 molluscs ($39\%$), 51 crustaceans ($25\%$) and 21 miscellaneous taxa. Molluscs were represented as a density- and biomass-dominant faunal group with a mean density of $601 ind./m^2$($53\%$ of the total benthic animals) and biomass of $25.37 gwwt/m^2$($39\%$ of total biomass): It was followed by polychaetes with $405 ind./m^2$($40\%$ of the total density). Total number of species and diversity were Bow in the inner estuarine bay containing high mud content and organic matter, whereas they were high in the outer stations containing low mud content and organic matter. Major dominant species were one biralve, Theora fragilis and three Polychaetes, Tharyx sp., Poeciloceatus johnonni and Lumbrineris lontifolia whose mean densities were $490ind./m^2$, $96ind./m^2$, $74ind./m^2$and $52 ind./m^2$, respectively. Cluster analysis indicated that the study area could be divided into four station groups: two innermost station groups, a central bay and an outer station group. The species diversity increased from the inner station group toward the outer groups. These results were discussed in terms of both the environmental factors and distribution of benthic community.

In order to understand the environmental impact of marine cage fish farms, we measured the vertical fluxes of particulate to the sediment, the distribution of organic carbon in core samples, sediment oxygen consumption rate (SOD), and macrobenthos with increasing distance from a fish cage in Miruk island located in Tongyong. The experiment was performed in August 2003. Measured values gradually decreased with distance, indicating that the organic matter in the sediment derived from the fish farm. The dominant macrobenthos species were Tharyx mulifilis, Lumbrineris longifolia, Sigambra tentaculata, and Capitella capitata, occupying 88% of the total population. Capirella capirata, an opportunistic polychaete species, were especially abundant between 0 to 5 m radius range. The estimated impact regions of organic matter enrichment based on sediment consilmption rates and compositions of macrobenthos were in good agreement. Most organic matter derived from the fish farm was deposited within a 10 m radius and then dispersed horizontally to nearby (at least 50 m) surface sediment. The vertical organic carbon fluxes to the sediment at the fish farm were higher by a factor of two than those outside the area. The remineralization organic carbon in the upper sediment layer was estimated to be 50% (1.07 g C m$^{-2}$ day$^{-1}$ ) at the fish farm. In contrast, outside the area, 30% (0.30 g C m$^{-2}$ day$^{-1}$ ) of organic carbon was recycled and the remaining 70% was deposited to the deep sediment layer.
A study on the community structure of macrobenthos was accomplished around Kadugdo, a south coast of Korea. Sampling was performed bimonthly using a Smith-McIntyre grab ($0.05 m^2$) at ten stations from January to November, 1998. A total of 260 species was sampled with mean density of $1,729 ind./m^2$and biomass of $154.7 gwwt./m^2$during the study periods. Of these species, there were 96 species of arthropods ($37.0\%$), 89 species of annelids ($34.2\%$), 45 species of molluscs ($17.3\%$) and 30 species of others ($11.5\%$). Annelids were density-dominant faunal group with a mean density of $1,263 ind./m^2$which occupied $73.0\%$ of the total individual of benthic animals. Molluscs were represented as biomass-dominant faunal group with a mean biomass of $99.5 gwwt./m^2$ ($64.3\%$ of total biomass). The density-dominant species were a bivalvia Theora fragilis ($194 ind./m^2$) and five species of polychaetes, Lumbrineris longifolia ($177 ind./m^2$), Chaetozone setosa ($150 ind./m^2$), Sternaspis scutata ($116 ind./m^2$), Sigambra tentaculata ($106 ind./m^2$) and Hemipodus yenourensis ($94 ind./m^2$). And major biomass-dominant species was a bivalvia Ruditapes philippinarum ($45.6 gwwt./m^2$). Clustering analysis showed that the study area could be divided into two station groups and three stations: southwestern part of Kadugdo effected on Chinhae Bay, fisheries farming area and eastern part of Kadugdo effected on Nakdong River estuary.

This study was carried out to analyze the community structure and distribution of macrobenthos at the intertidal zone of Jukbyeon in Uljin-gun during 2015-2016. The number of species were total 41 from 5 phyla. The species composition of Cnidaria 4, Mollusca 19, Annelida 3, Arthropoda 13, Echinodermata 2 and the individuals was $1,642inds./m^2$ and the weight was $1,959.42gWWt./m^2$ in the study area. The dominant species of the upper zones were Chthamalus challengeri and Nodilittorina radiata. Those of the lower zones were Mytilus galloprovincialis, Nipponacmaea schrenckii and Chlorostoma turbinata. The dominant species of the upper zones of winter and spring were C. challengeri, the summer and autumn of the N. radiata. Those of the lower zones were all seasonal of M. galloprovincialis. As a result of cluster analysis, those regions were divided in three groups, which were a group A of December 2015, August 2015 and February to August 2016 of intertidal zone lower, group B of December 2016 and May 2015 of intertidal zone lower, group C of intertidal zone upper.
Macrobenthic fauna in three Keum-Mankyung-Dongjin Estuaries and their nieghbouring coastal region in the west coast of Korea were sampled as 39 stations with van Veen grab to describe the distribution patterns of macrobenthos. Total 61 taxa from 10 faunal taxonomic groups and 5,636 individuals were collected. Abundance, species number, and faunal composition varied among three estuaries and coastal region. Dominant species from estuaries were similar to each other, but different from those of coastal region. Dominant species in estuarine regions were Prionospio cirrifera, potamocorbula amurensis. Nephtys californiensis, Glycera chiron and Glycinde sp, those from coastal area were Mactra chinensis. Magelona japonica, Owenia fusiformis. Anaitides Korean and Nephtys polybranchia. Two most dominant species in estuaries, Potamocorbula amanuensis and Prionospio cirrifer were not found elsewhere in Korean waters. The patchy distribution of dominant species and low species richness were reflected in the low species diversity Filter feeders were a major component in estuaries. High proportion of carnivores and low percentage of subsurface deposit feeders seemed to be a typical trophic composition in the study area. the distribution pattern of macrobenthos was related with the salinity and sediment types.

Macrozoobenthos were collected from 24 sites using small grab ($0.05m^2$) in order to see the spatial distribution of them at Sueocheon stream at the northern part of Gwangyang Bay during summer season when the maximum ecological processes are occurring. A total of 44 species of macrozoobenthos occurred, and their mean density was $789individuals/m^2$. Mollusks was the dominant faunal group accounted for 43.1% and 86.8% of the whole community density and biomass, respectively. Top five dominant species were a molluscan, Corbicula japonica (40.7%), two polychaete worms, Neanthes japonica (19.3%) and Heteromastus filiformis( 8.1%), and two crustaceans, Paranthura japonica (6.9%) and Jaeropsis sp. (6.9%). Species diversity index was very low with mean value of 1.12 and maximum value was recorded at the river mouth. At the upper stream, a brackish water species such as Corbicula japonica showed their maximum population density. The overall distribution of stream macrobenthos showed a rather simple pattern along with salinity and grain size gradients with few brackish water species occurring at coarse sediments in the stream but more diverse faunas inhabiting fine sediments in the river mouth.
