  • Hot forging of aluminum alloy has the bad machinability due to continuous chip formation caused from the ductility The bad machinability requires a labor and a high cost to produce final products after hot forging. In industrial field, T4 heat treatment is performed to improve the machinability, and the annealing and the cold sizing are followed. In this study, a series of heat treatments are introduced during hot forging operation without T4 heat treatment after forming so that it improves the machinability with reduction of the number of operations and machining cost. Instead of T4 heat treatment, water cooling and air cooling are tried and compared to find out an optimum cooling condition

  • Machining of sinter-hardened PM steels provides a challenge for part makers. To facilitate machining of these materials, a new additive (MA) has been developed to increase tool life during the machining process. Hard turning tests were performed to evaluate the effect of this new additive. Sintered compacts with the MA additive were compared to compacts without a machining aid and to compacts that contained the MnS additive. This paper discusses the improvement in machinability with this new additive in sinter-hardenable PM steels.

  • Machinability and machining mechanism were examined in the case where resin impregnation treatment was conducted to the Mo-Co hardening particle dispersed iron-based sintered alloy. As a result, the force required for machining decreased significantly compared with the case where resin impregnation treatment was not conducted. This effect is considered to be attributable to the embrittlement of cutting chips produced by the minimization of the cut material deformation.

  • Ceramics are very difficult-to-cut materials because of its high strength and hardness. Their machining mechanism is characterized by cracking and brittle fracture. In this paper, to give good machinability to the ceramics, h-BN powders are added to $Si_3N_4$, by volume of 20, 25 and 30%. And the machinability of the produced ceramics is tested using micro drilling system. Through required experimental works, it is shown that the micro drilling machinability is varied along with the volumetric percentage of h-BN powders. Also, it is verified that the obtained results can be used to develop new machinable ceramics of good material properties and machinability.

  • The effect of sintering aids on the sinterability for silcion nitride has been studied by hundreds workers. However the effect of sintering aids on the machinability as the own trobles which is the major barrier for the field applications of the ceramic components has not been fully studied. in this study the contents of Al2O3 and Y2O3 in silicon nitride were varied from 0 to 8 wt% respectively. The physical and mechanical properties of the silcion nitride were measured. The optimal microstructure of silicon nitride balls with the excellent machinability by adding with various contents of sintering aids was studied by MGF(magnetic-fluid grinding)technique. An attempt to figure out how the mechanical properties influence the machinability of silicon-nitride ball was made.

  • The high speed machining which can improve the production and quality in machining has been adopted remarkably in dietmold industry. As the speed of machine tool spindle increases, the machinability evaluation and monitoring of high speed machining is necessary. In this study, the machinability of 30, 000rpm class spindle was evaluated by using the developed tool dynamometer and the machining properties of high hardened and toughness materials in high speed were examined. Finally, the in-process monitoring technologies of tool wear were presented through the prediction by the experimental formula and pattern recognition by the neural network.

  • Using NC or CNC machine tool, the unmanned automatic production system has been growing recently in the manufacturing field. Thus it is important to find out the machinability of cutting force, tool wear and surface roughness during the cutting process. It is necessary to find how to estimate the machinability for the effective cutting condition because of problem about cutting power, tool wear, cutting time and precision. This study was planned to discover the relations of tool wear by variations of roughness and derived to correlate the wear with the surface roughness on the cutting parameter(cutting force, flank wear, surface roughness, friction angle, shear angle, slenderness ratio) when the aluminum alloy was cut in turning.

  • The objective of this study is to investigate proper cutting conditions of cellulose acetate(CA) for eyewear frames. Various cutting experiments with variation of spindle speeds and feed rates are conducted to evaluate the machinability of CA. The machinability of CA materials were discussed in terms of the cutting forces, surface roughnesses and chip formations. The cutting conditions of high spindle speeds and the feed per tooth of less than 0.05mm are recommended considering the surface roughnesses and chip formations. Also, the correlation between the surface roughness and the chip formation is investigated. These results are able to be applied to design the high-speed machine tool of CA frame.

  • Ceramics are very difficult-to-cut materials because of its high strength and hardness. Their machining process can be characterized by cracking and brittle fracture. Generally, ceramics are machined using traditional method such as grinding and polishing. However, such processes are generally costly and have low material removal rate. In this paper, to develop machinable ceramics those have good machinability without losing their material properties, machinability evaluations are performed by applying the experimental design method. In this paper, to evaluate the machinability of the developed ceramics, various workpieces are machined on the CNC machining center, and surface roughness are measured under predefined process parameters obtained using Taguchi method. And the experimental results are investigated to derive optimum cutting parameters for the given materials.

  • The powder forging (PF) process is used to produce fully dense powder metallurgy (PM) parts for high performance automotive applications. PF connecting rods have been widely accepted in the US, Japan, and other countries due to higher performance and lower manufacturing costs when compared to conventionally forged steel connecting rods [1]. In order to meet and exceed requirements for higher fatigue strength and better machinability of PF connecting rods, a newly developed machinability enhancer, named KSX, was introduced [2]. A comparison study between powder forged materials prepared with 0.3% MnS and with 0.1% KSX additions showed excellent properties in the case of the mix with KSX.
