  • The changes in expression of copper-zinc superoxide dismutase (CuZn-SOD), manganese superoxide dismutase (Mn-SOD) and glutathione peroxidase (GPX) in light-damaged rat retinas were examined. Sprague-Dawley rats (male, 6-weeks-old) were maintained on a cyclic photoperiod (12 hours light and 12 hours darkness) for 2 weeks. The illumination intensity during the light period was 80 lux. To induce light damage to the retina, a high-intensity illumination (3000-lux) was applied to the animals for 24 hours. After light exposure, the animals were returned to cyclic lighting. Eyes were enucleated 12 and 24 hours after light exposure started or 1,3, and 7 days after light exposure ended. Eyes were fixed and embedded in paraffin wax. Tissues were cut into 4${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$-thick sections. Sections were immunostained using antibody against CuZn-SOD, Mn-SOD, GPX and 8-hydroxy-deoxyguanocine (8-OHdG) as oxidative stress marker. 8-OHdG was observed in the outer nuclear layer (ONL) and retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) during light exposure. In light-damaged retinas CuZn-SOD labeling was up regulated in the ONL and RPE. Mn-SOD labeling was up regulated in rod inner segments (RIS) during light exposure and that in the RPE was up regulated after exposure. GPX labeling was observed in rod outer segments (ROS) during light exposure. GPX labeling was also observed in the RPE during and after light exposure. All three enzymes were observed in the outer retina, which suffered light damage, but occurred in defferent layers except within the RPE, in which case all three were expressed. These enzymes may play complementary roles as protective factors in light-damaged retinas.

  • Recently, as the interest in the accelerated global warming and the food shortage problem is increased, the concerns for microalgae as photosynthetic microorganisms are also increased. Specially, photosynthetic microalgae, Spriulina platensis have been an attractive source for $CO_2$ gas fixations and for a vast array of valuable nutritious compounds. In this paper, to culture the microalgal Spirulina platensis NIES 39 in a batch culture with high mass, optimal conditions for the culture temperature, initial pH, light intensity and concentration of carbon and nitrogen, were tested. At the most favorable culture condition, $35^{\circ}C$, initial pH 9.5, 4500 lux and carbon and nitrogen concentration of 16.8 g/L $NaHCO_3$ and 2.5 g/L $NaNO_3$, the excellent yields of 2.10 g/L biomass and 29.53 mg/L chlorophyll were obtained.

  • In this study, EEG, HRV, and Vibra image were compared and analyzed in the environmental test room due to variation of temperature. The condition of the environmental test room was in relative humidity 50[RH%], air current speed 0.02[m/s] and illuminance 1000[lux] with setting up different temperatures from $18[^{\circ}C]$ to $31[^{\circ}C]$. At temperature $25[^{\circ}C]$, relative $M{\alpha}$ wave, relative $M{\beta}$ wave, $\frac{SMR}{\theta}$, and SDNN were revitalized, and both sides ${\alpha}$ wave asymmetry index $A_2$, HRT, stress index, and fatigue degree were decreased. Therefore, it was found that temperature $25[^{\circ}C]$ effects to increase the Neuro-energy like amenity, productivity, and concentration.

  • This study was conducted to investigate optimal conditions for formation of synnemata from Beauveria bassiana. The strain of B. bassiana was isolated from a host of Oncotympana fuscata in Halla mountain of Jeju island. The yield of synnemata was the highest at application of brown rice (90%) and silkworm pupae (10%) media. On the other hand, the other media did not result in formation of synnemata. The highest formation of synnemata was achieved at conditions of moderate air inflow and $20^{\circ}C$. The optimal moisture and light intensity for formation of synnemata were 60% and 300 lux, respectively. In addition, inoculation of the liquid spawn resulted in higher yield than that of asexual spore.

  • We have investigated the productivity of microalgae, Nannochloropsis sp., using highly efficient vertical photobioreactor which has been developed by the company IMBiz. This experiment was performed in the field for one month with 2 sets of 2 tons of media under autotrophic cultural mode. In the culture with 0.1% of $CO_2$, the average daily productivity was shown to be up to 0.953g per liter, and 0.574g per liter in the culture with only ambient air. The temperature ranged from $20^{\circ}C$ to $31^{\circ}C$, and it didn't make any differences on the productivity. The light intensity ranged from 5,000 Lux to 40,000 Lux. The light has been appeared to have a very close relationship with the productivity of microalgae. Meanwhile, the harvesting method of pressurefloating attempted in this photobioreactor was found to be very effective.

  • Ambient-light sensor system, which changes the brightness of a display as ambient light change, was studied to reduce the power consumption of the mobile applications such as note PC, tablet PC and smart phone. The ambient-light sensor system should be integrated on a display panel to improve the complexity and cost of mobile applications, so the ambient-light sensor and readout circuit was integrated on a display panel using low-temperature poly-silicon thin film transistors (LTPS-TFT). We proposed the new compensation method to correct the panel-to-panel variation of the ambient-light sensors, without additional equipment. We designed and investigated the new readout circuit with the proposed compensation method and the analog-to-digital converter for the final digital output of ambient light. The readout circuit has very simple structure and control timing to be integrated with LTPS-TFT, and the input luminance ranges from 10 to 10,000 lux. The readout rate is 100 Hz, and maximum differential non-uniformity with 20 levels of the final output below 0.5 LSB.

  • $H_2$ production by Chromatium sp., a large purple sulfur bacterium blooming in lake Kaiike, under various environmental conditions was examined. Chromatium sp. produced $H_2$ only in the presence of light and $H_2$. Maximum $H_2$ production ($0.01\;{\mu}mol/hr/(mg\;dry\;cell\;weight)$) was obtained in the solution of 20 mg $H_2S-S/l$ under low light intensity (1000 lux) at $30^{\circ}C$. $H_2$ production was severely inhibited by the presence of $N_2\;or\;NH_4^+$. The rate observed for Chromatium sp. was relatively low compared to that of other phototrophic bacteria. Chromatium sp. is probably a most potent Ha producing species in lake Kaiike, since the bacterium readily produced $H_2$ photoautotrophically even at low light intensities by the application of suboptimal $H_2$ concentrations. Based on the photoautotrophic characteristics of bacterial $H_2$ production, it is suggested that Chromatium sp. can be an economic and practical species for biological $H_2$ production system, particularly in temperate region.

  • The influence of various levels of major medium components such as sucrose, nitrate, phosphate, plant growth regulators, and light intensity for cell growth and the production of anthocyanin content in cell cultures of Populus alba ${\times}$ P. glandulosa were investigated. Best results for anthocyanin yield were obtained using Murashige and Skoog(MS) medium containing 5% sucrose, 12.5% nitrate, 200% phosphate, 1.0mg/l indole-3-acetic acid(IAA), 1.0mg/l benaylaminopurine(BAP), and continuous illumination of 7,000 lux. On the other hand, maximum cell growth was achieved with 5% sucrose, 50% nitrate above 400% phosphate compare with that of MS basal mediumi, and 0.5mg/l 2, 4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid(2, 4-D). Anthocyanin accumulation in a suspension cultured cells of given genotype was stimulated by subculturing onto the medium lacking 2, 4-D. Pigmented cell clusters were extracted with methanol containing 1% hydrochloric acid (HCl) and then anthocyanin was identified by thin layer chromatography (TLC) and U. V. spectrophotometer.
