In this paper, properties of hydrologic cycle in three experimental catchments were compared and different types of a lumped parametric model were applied to understand the hydrologic cycle in the catchments. One of them is a forest catchment and another one includes the reclained upland fields and last one does terraces paddy fields. The comparison of hydrologic properties showed that the differences in land used have great influences on the soil properties of surface layer, which cause changes in hydrologic processes such as evapotranspiration and storm runoff et.al. By the runoff analysis models, good agreements between observed and calculated discharge from the catchments were obtained and it was found that the differences in values of optimized model parameters and water budget components reflect those in the hydrologic cycle among them.

The objective of this study is to develop a catchment hydrologic cycle assessment model which can assess the impact of urban development and designing water cycle improvement facilities. Developed model might contribute to minimize the damage caused by urban development and to establish sustainableurban environments. The existing conceptual lumped models have a potential limitation in their capacity to simulate the hydrologic impacts of land use changes and assess diverse urban design. The distributed physics-based models under active study are data demanding; and much time is required to gather and check input data; and the cost of setting up a simulation and computational demand are required. The Catchment Hydrologic Cycle Assessment Tool (hereinafter the CAT) is a water cycle analysis model based on physical parameters and it has a link-node model structure. The CAT model can assess the characteristics of the short/long-term changes in water cycles before and after urbanization in the catchment. It supports the effective design of water cycle improvement facilities by supplementing the strengths and weaknesses of existing conceptual parameter-based lumped hydrologic models and physical parameter-based distributed hydrologic models. the model was applied to Seolma-cheon catchment, also calibrated and validated using 6 years (2002~2007) hourly streamflow data in Jeonjeokbigyo station, and the Nash-Sutcliffe model efficiencies were 0.75 (2002~2004) and 0.89 (2005~2007).

In this study, rainfall-runoff analysis was performed for Yongdam watershed($930km^2$) using KOWACO flood analysis model based on Storage Function Method as lumped hydrologic model and Vflo which was developed for real-time flood prediction by University of Oklahoma. The results shows that, the hydrographs of lumped and distributed model with uncalibrated parameters which estimated from physical or experimental relationship show significant biases from observed hydrographs. However, the hydrograph at Cheoncheon site from the distributed model follows the actual hydrograph to an extent that no more calibration is necessary. It encourages that distributed model can have advantages for application in real-time flood forecasting as physically based distributed hydrologic model which can construct event-independent basin parameter group.

This study is to analyse the hydrological behavior of agricultural reservoir using CAT (Catchment hydrologic cycle Assessment Tool). The CAT is a water cycle analysis model in order to quantitatively assess the characteristics of the short/long-term changes in watershed. It supports the effective design of water cycle improvement facilities by supplementing the strengths and weaknesses of existing conceptual parameter-based lumped hydrologic models and physical parameter-based distributed hydrologic models. The CAT especially supports the analysis of runoff processes in paddy fields and reservoirs. To evaluate the impact of agricultural reservoir operation and irrigation water supply on long-term rainfall-runoff process, the CAT was applied to Idong experimental catchment, operated for research on the rural catchment characteristics and accumulated long term data by hydrological observation equipments since 2000. From the results of the main control points, Idong, Yongdeok and Misan reservoirs, the daily water levels of those points are consistent well with observed water levels, and the Nash-Sutcliffe model efficiencies were 0.32~0.89 (2001~2007) and correlation coefficients were 0.73~0.98.
Many researches have been conducting on extracting geometry data and hydrologic parameters by using GIS technique. However, there is no clear standard on those methods yet. This study examines the changing pattern of runoff responses characteristics with applying lumped model on divided watershed. WMS is used in order to divide watershed and calculate hydrologic geometry data and parameters by GIS technique. HEC-1 is adopted as a hydrologic model to establish runoff responses. The basin is divided into small watersheds, which are approximately same size. This research conducted runoff response simulation of Pyoungchang River and Wichon River Basin. Especially, research was focused on what is the most appropriate level as a divined sub-basin, and tested the effect of size of sub-basin for the runoff response simulation. The results showed the size of sub-basin was not an important factor for the simulation results after a certain size. The results of this study can be applied as an appropriate guidance to select optimal simulation size of watershed for the lumped model in a specific watershed.
The purpose of this study is to investigate how the degree of distribution influences the calibration of snow and runoff in distributed hydrological models using a multi-criteria calibration method. The Hydrology Laboratory-Research Distributed Hydrologic Model (HL-RDHM) developed by NOAA-National Weather Service (NWS) is employed to estimate optimized parameter sets. We have 3 scenarios depended on the model complexity for estimating best parameter sets: Lumped, Semi-Distributed, and Fully-Distributed. For the case study, the Durango River Basin, Colorado is selected as a study basin to consider both snow and water balance components. This study basin is in the mountainous western U.S. area and consists of 108 Hydrologic Rainfall Analysis Project (HRAP) grid cells. 5 and 13 parameters of snow and water balance models are calibrated with the Multi-Objective Shuffled Complex Evolution Metropolis (MOSCEM) algorithm. Model calibration and validation are conducted on 4km HRAP grids with 5 years (2001-2005) meteorological data and observations. Through case study, we show that snow and streamflow simulations are improved with multiple criteria calibrations without considering model complexity. In particular, we confirm that semi- and fully distributed models are better performances than those of lumped model. In case of lumped model, the Root Mean Square Error (RMSE) values improve by 35% on snow average and 42% on runoff from a priori parameter set through multi-criteria calibrations. On the other hand, the RMSE values are improved by 40% and 43% for snow and runoff on semi- and fully-distributed models.

HSPF is a comprehensive, continuous, lumped parameter, watershed-scale model that simulates the movement of water, sediment, and a wide range of water quality constituents on pervious and impervious surfaces, in soil profiles, and within streams and well-mixed reservoirs. The hydrologic calibration of HSPF is performed manually using the decision-support software Expert System for the Calibration of HSPF (HSPEXP). The initial values for the HSPF hydrologic parameters were estimated based on guidance from BASINS Technical Note 6. Initial parameter values were adjusted for the study watershed during the calibration period within the recommended ranges for the parameters.

A lumped deterministic model(DAWAST model) was developed to predict the daily streamflow. Since the streamflow is dominantly determined by the soil water storage in the watershed, the model takes the soil water accounting procedures which are based on three linear reservoirs representing the surface, unsaturated, and saturated soil layers. The variation of soil water storage in the unsaturated zone is traced from the soil water balance on a daily basis. DAWAST model consists of 5 parameters for water balance and 3 parameters for routing. A optimization technique of unconstrained nonlinear Simplex method was applied for the determination of the optimal parameters for water balance. Model verification was carried out to the 7 hydrologic watersheds with areas of 5.89-7,126km$^2$ and the results were generally satisfactory. The daily streamflow can be arbitrarily simulated with the input data of daily rainfall and pan evaporation by the DAWAST model at the station where the observed streamflow data of short periods are available to calibrate the model parameters.

This study refers to the development of a hydrologic model simulating daily inflow and release rates for inigation reservoirs. A daily - based model is needed for adequate operation of an irrigation reservoir sufficing the water demand for paddy fields which is closely related to meteorological conditions. And the objective of this study is to develop a reservoir release rate model and then to calibrata the parameters. The release rates model considers daily water demands , water supply for transplanting, minmum release for maintaining canal flow, and maxirnun and regular flooding depth for determining effective rainfall on paddy fields. Each of the factors in the model was regarded as a lumped pararuter representing the average condition of a whole irrigated area. The water demand was estimated form the potential evapotranspiration by Penman method, the effective rainfall, and the infiltration on paddy fields. The release model was found to be capable of adequately simulating daily reservoir releases based on meteorological data.
