  • Optical simulation methods such as a ray tracing technique have been widely used to predict the optical performances of collimating films for LCD backlight applications. It is necessary to optimize simulation conditions which have substantial effect on the simulation result in order to predict accurate performances of collimating films. We have set up a very simple backlight model consisting of a reflection film, a virtual flat light-source, and a prism film, which is a representative collimating film for backlight, in order to analyze the simulation conditions which are strongly correlated with the on-axis luminance gain and the viewing-angle characteristics of prism films. It was found that the dependence of the relative change in the on-axis luminance on the structure and material properties of collimating films can be derived from the above-mentioned simple BLU model and from simulation using it. However, the exact reflection property of the reflection film and the distribution of the incident light onto the optical film were found to be very important for revealing exact viewing-angle characteristics of collimating films.

  • In this papar, we propose a new motion estimation and coding technique using adaptive motion vector resolution. Currently, HEVC encodes a video using 1/4 motion vector resolution. If there are high texture regions in a picture, HEVC can't get a performance enough. So, we insert additional 1-bit flag meaning whether motion vector resolution is 1/4 or 1/8 in PU syntax. Therefore, decoder can recognize the transmitted motion vector resolution. Experimental results show that maximum coding efficiency gain of the proposed method is up to 5.3% in luminance and 7.9% in chrominance. Average computional time complexity is increased about 33% in encoder and up to 5% in decoder.

  • Although the H.264 video coding scheme is popular, it is not efficient for high-definition (HD) video coding because the size of its macroblock is relatively small for the HD video resolution. In this paper, we propose a new intra coding scheme based on the enlarged macroblock size. For the luminance component, intra $4{\times}4$ prediction and intra $16{\times}16$ prediction in H.264 are scaled into intra $8{\times}8$ prediction and intra $32{\times}32$ prediction, respectively. For the chrominance components, intra $8{\times}8$ prediction is extended to intra $16{\times}16$ prediction. Along with the $8{\times}8$ basic coding block size, an $8{\times}8$ integer discrete cosine transform (DCT) is used. Experimental results show that the proposed algorithm improves coding efficiency of the intra coding for HD video: PSNR gain by 0.23dB and bit-rate reduction by 5.32% on average.

  • Quaternary tree plus multi-type tree (QT+MTT) structure was adopted in the Versatile Video Coding (VVC) standard as a block partitioning tool. QT+MTT provides excellent coding gain; however, it has huge encoding complexity due to the flexibility of the binary tree (BT) and ternary tree (TT) splits. This paper proposes a fast inter coding unit (CU) partitioning algorithm for BT and TT split types based on prediction accuracy functions using the mean of the absolute error (MAE). The MAE-based decision model was established to achieve a consistent time-saving encoding with stable coding loss for a practical low complexity VVC encoder. Experimental results under random access test configuration showed that the proposed algorithm achieved the encoding time saving from 24.0% to 31.7% with increasing luminance Bjontegaard delta (BD) rate from 1.0% to 2.1%.
