Friction transition diagram considering the effects of oxide layer formed on contact parts of TiN coated ball and steel disk in sliding (TiN코팅된 볼과 스틸디스크의 미끄럼운동 시 접촉면에 형성되는 산화막의 영향을 고려한 마찰천이선도 작성에 대한 연구)

  • In this study, the effects of oxide layer formed on the contact parts of TiN coated ball and steel disk in sliding are investigated. Also wear mechanism to form the oxide layer and the characteristics of the oxide layer formation are investigated. AIS152100 steel ball is used for the substrate of coated ball specimens. Two types of coated ball specimens were prepared by depositing TiN coating with 1 and 4um in coating thickness. AISI1045 steel is used for the disk type counter-body. To investigate the effect of oxide layer on the contact parts of the two materials, the tests were performed both in ambient for forming oxide layer on the contact parts and in nitride environment to avoid oxidation. And to study the effects of surface roughness of counter-body, TiN coating thickness and contact load of sliding test on the characteristics of oxide layer formation on counter-body, various tests were carried out. From the results, the friction characteristics between the two materials was predominated by iron oxide layer that formed on wear track on counter-body and this layer caused the high friction. And the formation rate of the oxide layer on wear track increased as the real contact area between the two materials increased as the contact load increased, the TiN coating thickness decreased and the surface of counter-body smoothened.

A Study on the Formation and the Tribological Role of Mass Transfers Layers at Rubbing Silver-coated Surface (은 박막이 코팅된 표면에서 물질전이층의 형성 및 그 트라이볼로지적 역할에 관한 연구)

  • The tribological role of mass transfer layer was studied with silver coatings under various ranges of load and sliding speed. Silver coating was performed with a functionally gradient coating method. Tests were performed in dry sliding conditions, using a ball-on-disk contact configuration, at the load of 0.0196-17.64 N and the sliding speed of 20-1,000 mm/s in ambient air. Optical microscope and EPMA analyses showed that contact surfaces were covered with the mass transfer layers of agglomerated wear particles depending upon the contact conditions, and they greatly influenced the tribological characteristics of the surfaces. However, the formation of mass transfer layer was suppressed as the sliding speed increased, and above a critical sliding speed, no mass transfer layer was able to form. For building up a general framework of tribological behavior of the coated silver films, all test data were summarized on a map whose axes are contact pressure and sliding speed.

  • The economic loss arisen from the abrasion wear have been increasing at every industrial field. To reduce the economic loss we developed a new process, which is named MAHa process(Metallic Adhesives for HArdening). MAHa process is a process to weld tungsten carbide(WC) to the surface of a plain carbon steel so that it may stay longer under the severe abrasive environment. The depth of the WC layer ranges from 0.5 mm to 5 m. Compared with the conventional technology, arc-augmented welding which bonds WC on the flat surface only, MAHa process has the merits that it can make a robust WC layer on the round or wave- shaped surface also. How to turn the WC powder into a flexible mat is the key technology of the MAHa process. We invented new polymer materials to accomplish such a goal and both the MAHa process and the invented materials were applied for patents. For the application, the inner wall of elbow of Concrete Pump Truck(CPT) was maharized(MAHa process-treated) and the new WC layer on the inner wall was made successfully. The elbow was equipped to a CPT.

  • Friction characteristics of automotive friction materials containing different metallic fibers rubbing against Al-MMC and cast iron disk specimens have been studied. Friction materials containing aluminum, copper or low steel carbon fiber were tested. Friction tests were composed of three different phases to investigate the effect of temperature, pressure, speed, and drag time. The results showed that the friction material containing Al fibers has lower friction force and wear amount than the others with Cu or Steel fiber. On the other hand, the wear of friction material was severe in the case of using Al-MMC rotors. These results showed that the thermal decomposition of solid lubricants (and organic components), formation of transfer layer, and SiC particles in the AI-MMC rotor play crucial roles in determining the friction characteristics.

  • The motivation of this work is to use SAM(Self-Assembled Monolayer) for developing a rapid and flexible non-photolithographic nano-structure fabrication technique which can be utilized in micro-machining of metals as well as silicon-based materials. The fabrication technique implemented in this work consists of a two-step process, namely, mechanical scribing followed by chemical etching. From the experimental results, it was found that thiol on copper surface could be removed even under a few nN normal load. The nano-tribological characteristics of thiol-SAM on various metals were largely dependent on the native oxide layer of metals. Based on these findings, nano-patterns with sub-micrometer width and depth on metal surfaces such as Cu, Au and Ag could be obtained using a diamond-coated tip.

  • Plasma-sprayed coatings were obtained by spray-dried $Cr_2O_3$ powder with and without Mo addition. A reciprocal type tribo-tester was employed to examine friction and wear behavior of the specimens at room temperature. The composition and the worn surface of coated specimens were observed by XRD and SEM. The results showed that friction Coefficient of the Mo added specimens were lower than one of $Cr_2O_3$ specimen. But $Cr_2O_3$ specimen had a lower wear loss. Protecting layer were observed at the worn surface of coated specimens with Mo addition.

진공중에서의 알루미나 세라믹스의 Tribology 특성

  • This study was undertaken to investigate tribology characteristics of the alumina ceramics($Al_2O_3$) of the various purity for the variation of ambient condition such as air and vacuum. The wear test was carried out under different experimental condition using the wear test device, which was designed for this study, and in which the annular surface of wear testing specimens as well as mate specimen made of STB2 steel, were subjected to sliding speed, applied load and the sliding distance. The results obtained were as follows. As the ambient pressure decreases, the friction coefficient increases because the protective layer made of absorption due to decrease of the amount of ambient gas can not be formed. As the friction coefficient paticularly for 85% alumina lower than 95% and 99.7% in the alumina purity increases by an influence of heat accumulation caused by small elastic modulus and thermal conductivity. The friction surface of ceramics can be protected in the air by the influence of the oxides transfered from STB2. However, in the vacuum, the protective layer made of the absorption substance can not be formed due to the decrease of ambient gas.

  • The investigation of microscopic precision in high speed endmilling is necessary for machinability evaluation, and the environmentally conscious machining technology have more important position in recent machining process. The microscopic precision of workpiece is influenced by machining environments variation as cutting fluid type and lubricant method. In this study, the cutting forces according to variation of cooling and lubrication are investigated by specially designed tool dynamometer. And the surface roughness, micro hardness and residual stress are evaluated according to machining environment. The characteristics of damaged layer in environmentally conscious machining and conventional machining using cutting fluid are compared experimentally.

  • Friction and wear characteristics of novolac resin-based friction materials reinforced with aramid pulp and potassium titanate were investigated by using a pad-on-disk type friction tester. Friction properties such as friction stability, surface morphology, and wear rate varied according to the relative amount of aramid pulp and potassium titanate. The friction materials reinforced with both aramid pulp and potassium titanate showed superior friction stability and wear resistance due to the formation of durable transfer layer.

  • In contrast to the machineries using rolling element bearings, systems with journal bearings generally operate in large scale and under severe loading condition such as steam generator turbines and internal combustion engines. Failure of the bearings in these machineries can result in the system breakdown. To avoid the time consuming repair and considerable economic loss, the detection of incipient failure in journal bearings becomes very important. In this experimental approach, acoustic emission monitoring is applied to the detection of incipient failure caused by several types of abnormal operating condition most probable in the journal bearing systems. It has been known that the intervention of foreign materials, insufficient lubrication and misassembly etc. are principal factors to cause bearing failure and distress. The experiment was conducted under such designed conditions as hard particles in the lubrication layer, insufficient lubrication, and metallic contact in the simulated journal bearing system. The results showed that acoustic emission could be an effective tool to detect the incipient failure in journal bearings.
