This paper presents a rotordynamic analysis and the operation of a power turbine applied to a 250 kW super-critical $CO_2$ cycle. The power turbine consists of a turbine wheel and a shaft supported by two fluid film bearings. We use a tilting pad bearing for the power turbine owing to the high speed operation, and employ copper backing pads to improve the thermal management of the bearing. We conduct a rotordynamic analysis based on the design parameters of the power turbine. The dynamic coefficients of the tilting pad bearings were calculated based on the iso-thermal lubrication theory and turbine wheel was modeled as equivalent inertia. The predicted Cambell diagram showed that there are two critical speeds, namely the conical and bending critical speeds under the rated speed. However, the unbalance response prediction showed that vibration levels are controlled within 10 mm for all speed ranges owing to the high damping ratio of the modes. Additionally, the predicted logarithmic decrement indicates that there is no unstable mode. The power turbine uses compressed air at a temperature of $250^{\circ}C$ in its operation, and we monitor the shaft vibration and temperature of the lubricant during the test. In the steady state, we record a temperature rise of $40^{\circ}C$ between the inlet and outlet lubricant and the measured shaft vibration shows good agreement with the prediction.
A DE-side LBP tilting pad journal bearing of a 1-stage overhung heat-pump compressor in a propylene process exhibited abnormal high-temperature behavior. Its temperature had been relatively high at $78^{\circ}C$ from the beginning of operation. In 2014, after three years of operation, it increased suddenly and reached $103^{\circ}C$. Installing a varnish removal equipment and others managed to stabilize the temperature at $95^{\circ}C$. We undertook a troubleshooting approach for reviewing the comprehensive status and integrity of the temperature design of the bearing. We performed lubrication and heat-balance analysis, based on the design engineering data and documents supplied by the OEM. For the base design data of DE-side TPJB, evaluating the effects of key design variables on bearing metal temperature showed that firstly, increasing the bearing clearance and supply oil flow-rate, and next, changing the oil type, and finally, increasing the machined pad clearance and offset, are more effective in reducing the bearing metal temperature. Furthermore, a clarification meeting with the OEM revealed that an incorrect decision had been made to decrease the bearing clearance to eliminate the SSV harshness issue, while not maintaining a sufficient oil flow-rate. We conducted a detailed retrofit design analysis, wherein we increased the oil flow-rate and bearing clearance by decreasing the preload. We predicted that the bearing temperature would decrease to $63^{\circ}C$ from $75.7^{\circ}C$ even at the rerate condition. Finally, after installing and operating a retrofit replacement bearing in 2015, the bearing temperature stabilized at a low temperature of $65^{\circ}C$. Currently (January. 2017), two year later, the bearing metal temperature remains at $65^{\circ}C$. Therefore, we can conclude that the abnormal high-temperature behavior of the bearing has been resolved completely.
Engine oil is a substance used for the lubrication of internal combustion systems. However, in some case, defects in engine systems may contaminate engine oil with fuel. Contaminated engine oil can cause problems in the normal functioning of a vehicle. In this study, we investigate the functional properties of engine oil contaminated with diesel fuel. The test results indicate that the engine oil contaminated with diesel fuel has low flash point, pour point, density, kinematic viscosity and cold cranking simulator value. The contaminated engine oil which has low plash point can cause fire and explosion accident. Furthermore, a four ball test indicates that the contaminated engine oil increases wear scar to poor lubricity. Moreover, we investigate the GC pattern using SIMDIST (simulated distillation) for determination of diesel in engine oil. The SIMDIST analytic result, diesel was detected at earlier retention time than engine oil in chromatogram. Thus the SIMDIST method can define whether engine oil is contaminated by diesel fuel or not. We can use the SIMDIST method for the diagnosis of oil condition instead of analyzing other physical properties that require many analytic instruments, large volume of oil sample and long analysis time.
In vertical hydro/hydraulic power turbine-generator applications, traditionally, cylindrical turbine guide bearings (TGBs) are widely used to provide turbine runner shafts with smooth rotation guides and supports. All existing cylindrical TGBs with simple plain pads have drawbacks such as having no pressure generation and film stiffness at the no-load condition and in addition, at the low-load/low-eccentricity condition, having very low film stiffness values and lacking design credibility in the stiffness values themselves. In this paper, in order to fundamentally improve the low-load/low-eccentricity performance of conventional cylindrical TGBs and thus enhance their design-application availability and usefulness, we propose to introduce a rotation-directional leading-edge taper to each partitioned pad, i.e., a pad leading-edge taper. We perform a design analysis of lubrication performance on $4-Pad{\times}4-Row$ cylindrical TGBs to verify an engineering/technical usefulness of the proposed pad leading-edge taper. Analysis results show that by introducing the leading-edge taper to each pad of the cylindrical TGB one can expect a constant high average direct stiffness with a high degree of design credibility, regardless of load value, even at the low-load/low-eccentricity condition and also control the average direct stiffness value by exploring the taper height as a design parameter. Therefore, we conclude that the proposed pad leading-edge tapers are greatly effective in more accurately predicting and controlling rotordynamic characteristics of vertical hydro-power turbine-generator rotor-bearing systems to which cylindrical TGBs are applied.
In the present study, the residual stresses can have a significant on the life of structural engineering components. Residual stresses are created by the surface treatment such as shot peening or deep rolling. The objective of this experimental investigation is to study the influence of friction and wear characteristics due to residual stress under dry sliding condition. Friction and wear data were obtained with a specially designed tribometer. Test specimens were made of SUP9(leaf spring material) after they were created residual stress by shot peening treatment. Residual stress profiles were measured at surface by means of the X-ray diffraction. Sliding tests were carried out different contact pressure and same sliding velocity 0.035m/s(50rpm). Leaf spring assembly test used to strain gauge sticked on leaf spring specimen in order to measure interleaf friction of leaf spring. Therefore, we were obtained hysteresis curve. As the residual stresses of surfaces increased, coefficient of friction and wear volume are decreased, but the residual stresses of surfaces are high, and consequently wear volume do not decreased. Coefficient of friction obtained from leaf spring assembly test is lower than that obtained from sliding test. From the results, structural engineering components reduce coefficient of friction and resistant wear in order to have residual stresses themselves.
In this study, biodegradable base Li-greases were prepared by using Li-soap thickener and vegetable oils such as soybean oil, rapeseed oil, castor oil and synthetic ester. Also, EP-greases were formulated by blending base Li-greases, anti-wear additives, EP additives, anti-oxidants and corrosion inhibitor etc. And EP-greases were characterized by analysing physical properties such as worked penetration, dropping point, 4-ball wear, extreme pressure, thermal properties etc. Biodegradability of base Li-greases and EP-greases were evaluated by CEC-L-33-A-93 method using several inoculums of domestic sewage treatment plant. As the results, biodegradability of vegetable oils were shown at the range of 97.1 to $98.4\%$. And biodegradability of base Li-greases and EP-greases were $86.2\%\;\~\;89.3\%\;and\;83.4\%\;\~\;90.0\%$ which were lower value than those o( vegetable oils due to effect of Li-soap thickener, respectively. Therefore, the EP-greases prepared in this study were easily biodegraded by microorgnism.
As electrorheological fluid(ER fluid) has a characteristic that apparent viscosity varies when electric field applied, so rheological characteristic(yield stress & viscosity) changes in proportion to the electric field applied and the response time is very short within a few miliseconds . In case of using ER fluid for journal bearing as lubricant, it is estimated that it's possible to realize very effective journal bearing system that is not complicate and has a very quick response time. It is necessary to examine the influence of rheological characteristic that varies with electric field applied on bearing characteristic to apply ER fluid to journal bearing, however there are few studies for about that. As for the journal bearing, it comes under high shear flow mode that has shear rate range of $10^3\~10^4s^{-1}$ because rotational speed is very high and clearance is small. But most of the studies for about ER fluid issued until now is about the range of $10\~10^2s^{-1}$. So, there are a lot of difficulties to understand the characteristic offish shear flow mode and furthermore it is restricted to make an experiment for about the characteristic of ER fluid because of the limitation of experimental equipment. The equipment was prepared to make an experiment lot high shear flow mode that has the range of $10^3\~10^4s^{-1}$ using ER fluid that is composed of silicon oil with dispersed particle of starch. Using the above system, the fluid characteristic of ER fluid was studied.
The sliding wear behaviors of Zircaloy-4 nuclear fuel rod were investigated using two support springs with convex and concave shapes in room temperature air and water. The main focus is to compare the wear behavior of various test variables such as slip amplitude, environment, contact contours with different spring shape and a number of cycles. The results indicated that wear volume and maximum wear depth increased with slip amplitude in both air and water, but their trends tended to change according to the spring shapes and test environments. In air condition, the wear volume was controlled by wear debris behavior generated on worn surface. As a result, final wear volume and maximum wear depth decreased if a ratio of protruded wear volume to worn area $(D_p)$ would be saturated to specific value. This is because wear particle layer could accommodate large strain by accumulating and transforming wear particle layer. However, in water condition, metal-to metal contact was more dominant and wear volume was greatly affected by changed mechanical behavior between contact surfaces since wear debris should be generated after repeated plastic deformation and fracture. After wear test, worn surfaces were examined using optical microscope and SEM and details of wear mechanism were discussed using a ratio of wear volume to worn area $(D_e)$ at each test condition.
In this study, the effects of oxide layer formed on the contact parts of TiN coated ball and steel disk in sliding are investigated. Also wear mechanism to form the oxide layer and the characteristics of the oxide layer formation are investigated. AIS152100 steel ball is used for the substrate of coated ball specimens. Two types of coated ball specimens were prepared by depositing TiN coating with 1 and 4um in coating thickness. AISI1045 steel is used for the disk type counter-body. To investigate the effect of oxide layer on the contact parts of the two materials, the tests were performed both in ambient for forming oxide layer on the contact parts and in nitride environment to avoid oxidation. And to study the effects of surface roughness of counter-body, TiN coating thickness and contact load of sliding test on the characteristics of oxide layer formation on counter-body, various tests were carried out. From the results, the friction characteristics between the two materials was predominated by iron oxide layer that formed on wear track on counter-body and this layer caused the high friction. And the formation rate of the oxide layer on wear track increased as the real contact area between the two materials increased as the contact load increased, the TiN coating thickness decreased and the surface of counter-body smoothened.
In nuclear power steam generators, high flow rates can induce vibration of the tubes resulting in fretting wear damage due to contacts between the tubes and their supports. In this paper the fretting wear tests and the sliding wear tests were performed using the steam generator tube materials of Inconel 690 against STS 304. Sliding tests with the pin-on-disk type tribometer were done under various applied loads and sliding speeds at air and water environment. Fretting tests were done under various vibrating amplitudes, applied normal loads and various temperatures. From the results of sliding and fretting wear tests, the wear of Inconel 690 can be predictable using the work rate model. Depending on normal loads and vibrating amplitudes, distinctively different wear mechanisms and often drastically different wear rates can occur. At room temperature, the wear coefficient K of Inconel 690 is 7.57${\times}$10$\^$13/Pa$\^$1/ in air and it is 1.93${\times}$10$\^$13/Pa$\^$1/ in water. At room temperature, it is found that the wear volume in air is more than in water. In water, the wear coefficient K at 50$^{\circ}C$ and 80$^{\circ}C$ is 4.35${\times}$10$\^$-13/Pa$^1$ and 5.81${\times}$10$\^$-13/Pa$^1$ respectively, Therefore, it is found that the wear volume extremely increases by increasing on temperature in water. This study shows that the dissolved oxygen with temperature increment increases and the wear due to fluidity is severe.
