  • Flammable substances are used in laboratories and industrial process. The flash point (FP) is one of the most important physical properties used to determine the potential for characterizing the fire and explosion hazard of liquids. The FP data at 101.3 kPa were measured for the binary systems {toluene+ethylbenzene}, {methlycyclohenxane+ethylbenzene} and {n-heptane+ ethylbenzene}. The experiments were performed according to the standard test method (ASTM D 3278) using a SETA closed cup flash point tester. The measured FPs were compared with the values predicted using the following activity coefficient models: Wilson, Non-Random Two Liquid (NRTL), and UNIversal QUAsiChemical (UNIQUAC). The average absolute deviation between the predicted and measured lower FP was less than 1.74 K.

  • The flash points for the systems, o-xylene+n-pentanol and m-xylene+n-hexanol, were measured by using Tag open-cup tester(ASTM D1310-86). The experimental data were compared with the values calculated by the Raoult's law and the optimization method using van Laar and Wilson equations. The calculated values based on the optimization method were found to be better than those based on the Raoult's law. The predictive curve of the flash point prediction model based on the van Laar equation described the experimentally-derived data more effectively than was the case when the prediction model was based upon the Wilson equation.

  • This study was accomplished to investigate drape coefficient and wrinkle recovery of brushed fabrics according to treatment processes and brushing conditions. For this study, grey fabrics of blended ratio of polyester 65% : cotton 35% were bleached and dyed. These fabrics were then brushed 1, 3, 5 and 7 times. Drape coefficient and wrinkle recovery of brushed fabrics were measured by drape tester and shirley crease recovery tester respectively. The experimental results were analysed statistically to relate mechanical properties, handle, drapability, and wrinkle recovery 1) Drape coefficients of dyed fabric showed lower values and wrinkle recovery showed higher ones than those of bleached and dyed fabrics. Especially dyed fabric brushed 3 times showed good appearance and form stability. 2) Considering the blocked properties that contribute to the drape coefficient and wrinkle recovery of brushed fabrics, bending and shearing properties had a high degree of correlation with brushed fabrics, and 2HB/W showed a high positive correlation with drape coefficient and a high negative correlation with wrinkle recovery.

  • Recently, research and development of the linear compressor are being active. The reason is that the one has not only higher efficiency than reciprocating type, but also lower noise. But because the dicharge valve of linear compressor is operated in high pressure and temperature circumstance, it is important to prevent leakeage. In this paper three other plastic reinforced composite materials were used. Those are TPI, PEEK and PEK which were containing other volume and kind of carbon fibers. First, for assessing mechanical properties, we measured the hardness and the heating property of the trst sepecimen by the microvickers hardness tester and the differential scanning calorimeter respectively. Finally, through FALEX tester, we could know the characteristics of the wear proving the results of before-conducted experiments.

  • The flash point is one of the most important parameters used to characterize the ignition and explosion hazards of liquids. Flash points were measured for several binary systems containing toluene, including {methanol+toluene}, {ethanol+toluene}, and {1-propanol+toluene}. Experiments were performed according to the standard test method using a SETA closed cup flash point tester. The measured flash points were compared with the predicted values calculated using the following $G^E$ models: Wilson, NRTL, and UNIQUAC. The average absolute deviation between the predicted and measured lower flash point was less than 1.69 K.

  • Wear particles of the model tread compounds for bus and truck tires were made using a laboratory abrasion tester and characterized based on their size distributions, shapes, and crosslink densities. The influence of the carbon black contents and rubber compositions (NR= 100 and NR/BR= 80/20) on the production of wear particles was investigated. The wear particles were separated according to size using a sieve shaker. The shape properties of the wear particles were analyzed using an image analyzer and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Their shapes were observed as tiny stick cookies or sausages with bumpy surfaces. The particle size distribution tended to be smaller with increasing carbon black content. Moreover, the particle size distributions of the NR = 100 samples were larger than that of the NR/BR blend samples. There were different filaments in the wear particles. The filament diameters tended to be thinner with increasing carbon black content. The crosslink density increased with increasing carbon black content, and the crosslink densities of the NR= 100 samples were lower than those of the NR/BR blend ones. The particle size distribution tended to be smaller with increasing crosslink density. Based on the experimental results, the wear particles can be produced by detaching debris from the main body through repetitive strain and recovery.

  • Laboratories and industrial processes typically involve the use of flammable substances. An important property used to estimate fire and explosion risk for a flammable liquid is the flash point. In this study, flash point data at 101.3 kPa were determined using a SETA closed cup flash point tester on the following solvent mixtures: {2,2,4-trimethylpentane + methylcyclohexane}, {2,2,4-trimethylpentane + ethylbenzene}, and {2,2,4-trimethylpentane + p-xylene}. The purpose of this work is to obtain flash point data for binary mixtures of 2,2,4-trimethylpentane with three hydrocarbons (methylcyclohexane, ethylbenzene, and p-xylene), which are representative compounds of the main aromatic hydrocarbon fractions of petroleum. The measured flash points are compared with the predicted values calculated using the GE models' activity coefficient patterns: the Wilson, the Non-Random Two-Liquid (NRTL), and the UNIversal QUAsiChemical (UNIQUAC) models. The non-ideality of the mixture is also considered. The average absolute deviation between the predicted and measured lower flash point s is less than 1.99 K, except when Raoult's law is calculated. In addition, the minimum flash point behavior is not observed in any of the three binary systems. This work's predicted results can be applied to design safe petrochemical processes, such as identifying safe storage conditions for non-ideal solutions containing volatile components.

  • Large drill bits may face high hardness ore and high working pressure when working. To optimize the use effect of large drill bits and prolong the use time, it is necessary to add a layer of pressure-resistant, wear-resistant, and low-friction coating on the surface of the drill bit. In this study, CoCrNiAlTi high-entropy alloy coatings and CoCrNiAlTi (70 wt%)-TiC (30 wt%) composite coatings are successfully prepared on Q235 steel by plasma spraying. The CoCrNiAlTi (70 wt%)-TiC (30 wt%) coating consists of FCC solid solution and a small amount of TiC phase. The effect of TiC on the composition phase, microhardness, and elastic modulus of HEA coating is studied by X-ray diffractometer (XRD) and microhardness tester. The effect of TiC on the friction and wear properties of HEA coatings is investigated using a wear tester. By improving the process parameters, the metallurgical bonding between the coating and the substrate is well combined, and a coating without pores and cracks is obtained. The experimental results confirm that the microhardness, elastic modulus, and wear resistance of CoCrNiAlTi-TiC composite coating are better, and the friction coefficient is lower.

  • The combustible properties(flash point, explosion limit and autoignition temperature) are the important safety items which are considered in the typical MSDS(material safety data sheet). In this study, for the safe handling of n-butyl methacrylate(n-BMA) being used in various ways in the chemical industry, the flash point and the autoignition temperature(AIT) of n-butyl methacrylate was experimented. And, the lower explosion limit of n-butyl methacrylate was calculated by using the lower flash point obtained in the experiment. The flash points of n-butyl methacrylate by using the Setaflash and Pensky-Martens closed-cup testers measured $44^{\circ}C$ and $51^{\circ}C$, respectively. The flash points of n-butyl methacrylate by using the Tag and Cleveland open cup testers are measured $53^{\circ}C$. The AIT of n-butyl methacrylate by ASTM 659E tester was measured as $295^{\circ}C$. The lower explosion limit by the measured flash point $44^{\circ}C$ was calculated as 0.85 vol.%. It was possible to predict lower explosion limit by using the experimental flash point or flash point in the literature.

  • Cu-added SKD11 was manufactured through the casting process and the effects of Cu addition with different contents (0, 1, 2 and 3 wt%) and aging treatment on microstructure, mechanical characteristics such as tensile strength and hardness, and thermal conductivity were investigated. The microstructure was analyzed by FE-SEM and XRD, the mechanical characteristics by Rockwell hardness tester and Tensile tester, and the thermal conductivity by Laser flash. As a result, SKD11 containing Cu had higher hardness than as-received SKD11. The hardness of as-cast SKD11 containing 1 wt% Cu was 42.4 HRC, whereas the hardness of asreceived SKD11 cast alloy was 19.5 HRC, indicating that the hardness was greatly improved when Cu was added. In the case of tensile strength, Cu-added SKD11 cast alloy had lower tensile strength than as-received SKD11, and the tensile strength tended to increase as Cu content increased. After heat treatment, however, tensile strength of as-received SKD11 was significantly increased, whereas in the case of Cu-added SKD11, as the Cu contents increased, the tensile strength increased less and even reduced at 3 wt% Cu. The thermal conductivity of Cu-added SKD11 cast alloy was about 13 W m-1 K-1, which was lower than that of the asreceived SKD11 cast alloy (28 W m-1 K-1). After the heat treatment, however, the thermal conductivity of as-received SKD11 was reduced, while the thermal conductivity of the SKD11 added with Cu was increased. Thermal conductivity was generally larger with less Cu content, and this tendency became more pronounced after heat treatment.
