  • According to the coagulation tests for PACs with various basicities, the PACB with lower basicity showed higher coagulation efficiencies of organics and phosphorus than the PAC with higher basicity. The PACB contained higher amount of monomeric Al (III) hydrolytic species comparing with PAC. In case of the coagulation for the sewage treated water, the coagulation efficiency by the charge neutralization and sweep floc formation was higher with PACB than with PAC. Accordingly, when $Al_2O_3$ concentration was similar in the coagulant, PACB showed higher removal efficiencies of turbidity, $COD_{Mn}$, TP, and $PO_4$-P comparing with PAC, especially in the lower range of coagulant dose.

  • The shear stress characteristics of landslide materials can be affected by various factors. We examined the shear stress characteristics of two different soils using ring-shear apparatus, in which saturation-consolidation-shearing speed can be easily controlled. This paper presents (i) shear stress-time characteristics, (ii) shear stress depending on normal stress and shear speed and (iii) shear stress as a function of shearing speed. Materials used in this paper were the Nakdong River sand and muds taken from Jinhae coastal area in Korea. Samples were prepared in three types: Sand (upper)-Sand (lower), Clay (upper)-Clay (lower) and Sand (upper)-Clay (lower). The upper and lower indicate the samples placed in upper and lower ring shear boxes, respectively. For given normal stresses (50 and 100 kPa) and shearing speed (0.1 mm/sec), we performed ring shear tests. Then the failure lines were determined in the second test. Last, we determined the shear stress characteristics depending on different shearing speeds, such as 0.01, 0.1, 1, 10, 100 mm/sec. As a result, we found that shear stress characteristics are strongly dependent on above three factors. The shear stress of Sand (upper)-Clay (lower) is smaller than that of Sand (upper)-Sand (lower), but slightly larger than that of Clay (upper)-Clay (lower). The shear stress is also characterized by grain crushing and wetting process at slip surface.

  • This study aims at the development of a technique for the optimal water allocation by applying Dynamic Programming Model for the effective usage and rational allocation of water resources, in case of which limited water resources in river basin should be used in several stages. In analytical procedure the possible allocable area was firstly zoned into the four areas: Pohang area ($C_1$), Yeungcheon area ($C_2$), Gyeungsan area ($C_3$), Daegu area ($C_4$), which are located between the Yeongcheon dam and the confluence of the lower Kumho river and the main course of the Nakdong river. Secondly, a return function was determined on the basis of the correlation between the GRP in each area and the amount of water used to it. A DP Model, finally, was applied to the allocation of the water resources according to both their usage and the areas. As a result, the fact has been found that when allocating by the area, $C_1$ could be possibly supplied only with the water resources avaiable from the Yeungchon dam, and the maximum units supplied to $C_1$ should be 240 units ($1unit=10^3㎥$ per day), beyond which we ought to develop an alternative water resources. Also, the return from the allocation by the usage exceeded the one from it by the area. At the same time it was more profitable to limit the water supply to $C_1$ into 217 units. In the allocation by the area 240 units and 80 units, if only the water resources available from the Yeungcheon dam used, and 360 units and 80 units if the Doil dam used additionally, could be supplied to $C_1$ and the lower region respectively. In the allocation by the usage 103 units for industrial water with 33 units for both domestic and commercial water and 183 units, if only the water resources available from the Yeungcheon dam used, and 103 units with 33 units and 304 units, if the Doil dam taken into consideration additionally, could be supplied to $C_1$ and the lower region respectively. Therefore, much more water could be allocated to the region of lower Kumho river if the method of water allocation by the usage.

  • This study was conducted to test the green-tide mitigation technique in the lower part of the Sook Stream (Chusori) of Daecheong Reservoir from June 27 to August 24, 2014. And the effects were compared with weekly monitoring result of the watching station of the algae alert system (AAS) as well as test beds reach. The green-tide in a test bed was begun from the upstream, and it was gradually transferred and spread toward the downstream by the hydrological factors. The total amount of algae removed by algae removal device during the test period was 33,920 kg, and solids dewatered by natural gravity was 8,480 kg. Also chlorophyll-a content was 2.83 kg, the number of blue-green algae cells was equivalent to $78.6{\times}10^{14}$ cells. Compared with the results of the watching station of AAS, the pre-concentrate removal work in the outbreak waters was able to suggest the possibility of green-tide mitigation. In addition, an effective management of the green-tide was required spatial and temporal occurrence information and practical device technology. Particularly, the optimal timing of algae removal in the river-reservoir hybrid system was recommended at times before the monsoon rainy season and reached the lowest water level.

  • Interpretation of high-resolution seismic profiles collected from the inner shetf of the Korea Strait reveals that the shelf sequence in this area consists of three sedimentary units (I, II, and III in a descending order) formed after the last glacial maximum. Lower two units (II and III) represent the transgressive systems tract formed during the Holocene transgression, Unit III above the sequence boundary is interpreted to be the transgressive estuarine deposit, whereas Unit ll above the ravinement surface forms a thin transgressive sand which consists of the sediment produced through shoreface erosion and winnowing during the transgression. Unit I above the maximum flooding surface is the highstand systems tract consisting mainly of recent muds derived from the Nakdong River.

  • Vertical drain has usually been used to accelerate the consolidation of soft clay deposits with high moisture content. Busan thick clay deposits are subjected to artesian pressure from an aquifer in sand and gravel layers. However, effect of artesian pressure existing in drainage-installed soft ground on consolidation behaviors is not well known. This paper investigates the consolidation behavior of drainage-installed soft ground at the Nakdong river estuary with artesian pressure and without artesian pressure. A series of one-dimensional large size column test was carried out to find out the consolidation characteristics of clay. Test results indicated that total settlement of clay with artesian pressure was higher than that without artesian pressure because effective stress decreased due to upward flow. Dissipation rate of excess pore water pressure delayed and excess pore water pressure did not fully dissipate in clay layer with artesian pressure. Undrained shear strength of clay ground with artesian pressure was lower than that without artesian pressure.

  • Established in the lower reaches of the Nakdong river in Busan, the Noksan national industrial complex is one of the deepest soft ground areas in Korea. In case of the costal landfill having deep soft ground, there is a significant residual settlement over a long period of time. In this study, there was observed ground subsidence occurred in the Noksan national industrial complex from September 2002 to April 2007 by applying DInSAR and SBAS time series method using RADARSAT-1 and Envisat SAR datasets. As a result, it was calculated that ground subsidence developed at the velocity of about maximum 10 cm/yr and mean 6 cm/yr at the eastern center, west, western center and southern area contiguous on the coastline of the study area during the period from September 2002 to April 2007. In addition, the RADARSAT-1 average displacement map has been compared with the total displacement map observed by accurate magnetic probe extensometer during the period from 2001 to 2002. Since the time series displacement has shown a linear trend mostly, we consider that continuous monitoring should be needed until the ground subsidence of the study area has been stabilized.

  • The objectives of this study are to investigate a bromate behaviour in the processes of advanced water treatment system (AWTS: preozonation, coagulator-settler, rapid sand filter, postozonation, biological activated carbon (BAC) beds) and to investigate the effects of ozonation, pH and ammonia nitrogen on bromate (${BrO^-}_3$) formation. As a result, $BrO_3$ was not detected in the processes of the AWTS without ozonation, while it was detected in a preozonated and postozonated water. For $BrO_3$ formation during June to November, the $BrO_3$ concentration of <9.4${\mu}g/L$ was observed in postozonated water, while it was reduced to about 46% by BAC beds. When applied ozone dosage and ozone contact time for influent with $Br^-$ of <0.3mg/L were 0.5-2.0mg/L.min and 10 min., $BrO_3$ concentration increased with increasing ozone dosage. Longer contact time and lower ozone level also was needed to inhibit the formation of $BrO_3$. At ozone dosage of 1.4 mg/L.min, the formation rate of $BrO_3$ increased with increase of pH value. When $NH_4-N$ concentration increased from 0.1mg/L to 0.4mg/L, $BrO_3$ concentration decreased to about 38%. These results revealed that $BrO_3$ concentration increased with increasing Br level, ozone dosage, and pH value, while it decreased with increase of $NH_4-N$ concentration.

  • In an effort to interpret the characteristics of fine particle concentrations in Busan, time variations of hourly monitored concentrations $PM_{10}$ (Particulate Matter with aerodynamic Diameter ${\le}10\;{\mu}m$) in Busan are analyzed for the period from 2000 to 2005. The characteristics of aerosol second generation formation process is also interpreted qualitatively, by using the statistical analysis of the meteorological variables including temperature, wind speed, and relative humidity. The result shows some significant annual, seasonal, weekly and diurnal variations of $PM_{10}$ concentrations. In particular, seasonal(i.e., spring) variations are governed by frequency of yellow sand events even for the non-yellow sand cases where yellow-sand days are eliminated in our analysis. However, in seasonal variation, summer season predominate lower $PM_{10}$ concentrations due to the frequent precipitation, and weekly and diurnal variations are both found to be reflecting the emission rate from traffic amount. Correlation coefficients between $PM_{10}$ concentration and meterological variables for non-yellow sand days show overall negative correlation with visibility, wind speed, cloud amounts, and relative humidity. However for non-precipitation days, during non-yellow sand period positive correlation are found clearly with relative humidity, suggesting the importance of secondary aerosol formation in Busan that can be achieved by both homogeneous aerosol formation and heterogeneous transformations resulting from hygroscopic aerosol characteristics.

  • Concentration and speciation of trihalomethanes(THMs) and haloacetic acids(HAAs) that can be created during chlorine disinfection as disinfection by-products(DBPs) in Korean water treatment plants(WTPs) were investigated. 4 WTPs that adopted conventional water treatment processes were chosen for investigation and each represented a typical WTP on the Han, Keum, Sumjin and Nakdong Rivers. The average concentration of THMs was 26.9 ppb, and the maximum and minimum concentrations were 47.6 ppb and 11.0 ppb respectively, while the average concentration of HAAs was 25.4 ppb, and the maximum and minimum concentrations were 57.1 ppb and 9.7 ppb respectively. DBPs concentration was lower in the winter than the summer. The major species of THMs was chloroform and its average percentage was 77%, and the second highest was bromodichloromethane(20%), while the concentration of bromoform was below detection limits. The sum of dichloroacetic acid(DCAA) and trichloroacetic acid(TCAA) was 97% of $HAA_5 $ on average base. But its percentage was 90% in the Han River WTP, especially it was the lowest during the winter. On the other hand, the concentration of DCAA was higher than TCAA except during the summer.
