  • A single specimen (506 mm SL) of Gempylus serpens, belonging to the family Gempylidae, order Perciformes, was firstly collected from Jeju Island, Korea in April 2013. This specimen was characterized by having the lower jaw protruded than upper jaw; three big fangs on upper jaw; five dorsal finlets and seven anal finlets; two lateral lines split at the dorsal origin, upper line interrupted at the end of the first dorsal fin, but lower line extend to the caudal fin base. The new Korean name "Se-jang-gal-chi-ggo-chi-sok" is proposed for the genus Gempylus, and "Se-jang-gal-chi-ggo-chi" for the species G. serpens.

  • MDO(Multidisciplinary Design Optimization) methodology is a new technology to solve a complicate design problem with a large number of design variables and constraints. The design of a dental implant system is a typical complicate problem, and so it requires the MDO methodology. Actually, several analyses such as rigid body dynamic analysis and structural stress analysis etc. should be carried out in the MDO methodology application to the design of a dental implant system. In this paper, as a first step of MDO methodology application to the design of a dental implant system, the impact force which is applied on the tooth in masticating is calculated through the rigid body dynamic analysis of upper and lower jaw-bones. This analysis is done using ADAMS. The impact force calculated through the rigid body dynamic analysis can be used for the structural stress analysis of a dental implant system which is needed for the design of a dental implant system. In addition, the rigid body dynamic analysis results also show that the impact time decreases as the impact force increases, the largest impact force occurs on the front tooth, and the impact force is almost normal to the tooth surface with a slight tangential force.

  • Orthognathic surgery(2-jaw or 1-jaw surgery) is very famous one of cosmetic techniques. However, primary purpose of orthognathic surgery is to improve the occlusion of jaw and secondary purpose is to improve the esthetic result. Unfortunately, many patients don't only confuse often primary and secondary purpose of orthognathic surgery but they think the esthetic result is more important than the occlusion. Therefore, oral and maxillofacial surgeon has to fully understand cosmetic needs of patient and reflect that in the treatment plan. Patients with prominent mandibular angle want to have the narrower face of so called 'V-line' shape. Various techniques like the angle shaving, ostectomy of the lateral cortex around the mandibular angle and masseter musclectomy can be used for improving the mandibular angle hypertrophy. These techniques also can be applied in orthognathic surgery at the same time. We operated patients of orthognathic surgery, especially, with wide lower face and post-operative results were satisfactory in all cases. So, we propose mandibular angle management for improving the esthetic result of orthognathic surgery.

  • The author analyzed 243 cases clinically and radiographically which were diagnosed as odontogenic cyst in SNUH during 10 years (1974. 1 - 1983. 12). The obtained results were as follows: 1. This cyst occurred more frequently in male than in female and the incidence was the highest in the 3rd decade. 2. Maxilla was more frequently affected than mandible 3. Most of the odontogenic cysts were unilocular type (236 cases, 97.1%), showing distinct border (242 cases, 99.6%) with smooth margin (222 cases, 91.7%). 4. The adjacent teeth showed root resorption in 57 cases (23.5%), and root divergence in 52 cases (21.4%). 5. The cyst in lower jaw caused the displacement of the mandibular canal wall in 30 cases (31.25) 4. and root divergence in 52 5. 6. The cyst in upper jaw extended to the maxillary sinus in 61 cases (41.5%)

  • A Hanwoo cow with a delayed gestation and abdominal distension was delivered following PGF injection. There was excessive amniotic fluid, and a male calf was delivered but died immediately. The calf had no eyes and nose, and a cleft palate on the upper jaw. Gross appearance and computed tomography image showed that upper teeth were spread out on both sides due to cleft palate in the upper jaw, and lower jaw and teeth were positioned upward. There were no other brain parts except cerebellum. These findings show a rare case of hydramnios related to fetal congenital deformity in a Hanwoo cow.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the influences of the jaw dimension on the bone stress. Materials and Methods: Root analogue implant of Frialit-2 Synchro model in the jaw bone of various thickness from 8mm to 13mm were modelled axisymmetrically for a series of finite element analyses. As load conditions, non-axisymmetric lateral load of 20N and an oblique load of 50N, as well as an axisymmetric vertical load of 50N were taken into consideration. Results: The cervical area of implant under the axisymmetric load and the base cortical bone under the non axisymmetric load condition were the areas of main concern where the higher level of stress were likely to be obtained. Conclusion: The results indicated that at the two concerned areas drastically different stress distribution could take place as a function of the load conditions. Under the vertical load, the lower level of stress was observed for the narrow jaw bone at the cervical cortical bone whereas stress at the base cortical bone remained virtually unchanged. Under the non axisymmetric load condition, however, the stress at the base cortical bone increased very rapidly as the jaw bone width increased without inducing any significant change in the stress level at the cervical area.

  • In order to understand Changeologically on the meaning of FCST's TMJ (temporo-mandibular joint) treatment procedure, Yi, Shike, Bi, Gen trigrams concerning the jaw and change by treatment were analyzed from the viewpoint of semiotic context of hexagon and holistic interpretation on disease. Yi is meant by jaw but actually indicates mouth made by maxilla and mandible, and it's characters are related with nourishing by aliment and words. But when we eat and speak in the daily life, jaw does not nourish properly it's own body by bad habit or postures. For the treatment of this ill state, there needs punishment and correction symbolized with Shike. Shike has fourth nine meaning obstacles between the two strong lines in the upper and lower end, and so it has the function of mastication and get rid of the fourth nine metaphorically indicating subluxation of axis using CBA and auxiliary measures of four movement or laughing methods. Bi expresses the achievement and effects of consecutive mastication process implicating normalized manifestation of jaw and its linked spinal function. Gen symbolizes removing selfish motive or partiality in advance and reaches the best state of the saint righteously self-nourishable human being.

  • The growth changes in position of upper and lower jaws, incisal inclination in relation to inferior cranial base have been described. Twenty five males was studied quantitavely by means of serial cephalometric reontgenogram from seven to thirteen years of age. The findings seem to warrant the following conclusions: 1. Growth change in anteroposterior relationship of upper and lower jaws to the anterior cranial base showed very little change before eleven years of age but axial inclination of incisal teeth tended to become labiaization in relation to the anterior cranial base. 2. kiter eleven years of age, there wasn't nearly labialization of incisal teeth but jaw prognathism occurred a little in relation to the anterior cranial base.

  • The auther had studied on the debri index, calculus index and simplified oral hygiene index, which was made according to the oral examination criteria recommened by WHO in 1971. The examined persons were 14,825 persons who lived in large cities and rural area. The obtained results were as follows: 1. the simplified oral hygiene index were 1.81 in male and 1.54 in female who lived I large cities. In rural area, the simplified oral hygiene index were 2.23 in male and 1.92 in female. 2. the debri index, calculus index and oral hygiene index were lower in upper jaw than in lower jaw. 3. According to the aging, debri, index, calculus index and simplified oral hygiene index score wee increased. 4. Dental health education what had done was not so effective on oral hygiene.
