Transient liquid phase processing was investigated to decrease processing temperatures while maintaining useful piezoelectric properties in the lead zirconate titanate (PZT) system. Niobium oxide$(Nb_2O_5)$ modified crystalline PZT (PZTN) powder was combined with lead silicate $(PS; PbO-SiO_2)$ glass powder and crystalline titania, zirconia, and niobia. Firing above the melting temperature of the lead silicate $(PS; Tm \risingdotseq\; 714^{\circk}C)$ resulted in liquid phase densification of the PZTN followed by dissolution of the titania, zirconia, and niobia into the liquid phase, and crystallization of additional PZTN. The addition of crystalline titania, zirconia, and niobia to react with the lead oxide from the lead silicate phase resulted in an increase in the dielectric and Piezoelectric properties.
Aluminum nitride (AlN) has excellent properties such as high thermal conductivity and electrical resistivity, whereas it has some disadvantages such as low sinterability and tendency to be hydrolyzed by moisture at room temperature. In the present work, the relative density, modulus of rupture and microhardness were examined for pressure-less-sintered AlN (synthetic and commercial) bodies which were prepared under the conditions of various sintering temperatures, holding times and additions of CaCO3 which showed the best effect on sinterability among the various sintering aids. As a result, the AlN bodies with 1.0 wt% CaCO3 (0.56wt% CaO) which were sintered at 1800$^{\circ}C$ for 20 min showed good densification. In this case, the relative densities were 95.9% and 95.2%, and microhardnesses were 10.3 GPa and 9.8 GPa for synthetic and commercial AlN respectively. And as the holding time at 1800$^{\circ}C$ was increased from 10 min to 60 min, the relative density was increased from 91.9% to 96.5%. It was considered that impurities of metals and oxygen promoted the densification of AlN at low temperature (1600$^{\circ}C$).
In this study, the effects of small amounts (${\leq}3\;mol%$) of Li doping on the sintering characteristics and electrochemical performance of $(ZrO_2)_{0.89}(ScO_{1.5})_{0.1}(CeO_2)_{0.01}$ (ScSZ) were investigated. By adding 3 mol% lithium, the densification temperature of ScSZ was reduced from the conventional temperature of $1400^{\circ}C$ to $1200^{\circ}C$. It was found that Li doping also led to changes in the Zr:Sc ratio at the grain boundaries. Correspondingly, the dispersion of lithium zirconia at the grain boundaries accelerated the growth of ScSZ grains and increased the grain boundary resistance at temperatures below $450^{\circ}C$. At elevated temperatures of $450{\sim}750^{\circ}C$, the electrical conductivity of the ScSZ after doping remained almost unchanged under air and reducing atmospheres. These results suggest that the addition of lithium is promising for use in low temperature co-firing of ScSZ-based components for intermediate temperature solid oxide fuel cells.

The influence of MgO addition on the densification and microstructure of alumina (Al2O3) was studied. Compacted alumina specimens were manufactured using ball-milling and one-directional pressing followed by sintering at temperatures below 1700℃. Relative density, shrinkage, hardness, and microstructure were investigated using analytical tools such as FE-SEM, EDS, and XRD. When the MgO was added up to 5.0 wt% and sintered at 1500℃ and 1600℃, the relative density exhibited an average value of 97% or more at both temperatures. The maximum density of 99.2% was with the addition of 0.5 wt% MgO at 1500℃. Meanwhile, the specimens showed significantly lower density values when sintered at 1400℃ than at 1500℃ and 1600℃ owing to the relatively low sintering temperature. The hardness and shrinkage data also showed a similar trend in the change in density, implying that the addition of approximately 0.5 wt% MgO can promote the densification of Al2O3. Studying the microstructure confirmed the uniformity of the sintered alumina. These results can be used as basic compositional data for the development of MgO-containing alumina as high-dielectric insulators.
The variations of physical and dielectric properties of low temperature dielectrics based on typical aluminoborosilicate glasses modified with several divalent oxides were investigated. The divalent oxides studied here included CaO, MgO, BaO, SrO and ZnO. All samples containing either 35 wt% or 45 wt% alumina filler were prepared at the same processing condition and then fired at $850^{\circ}C$ for 30 min. The resultant characteristics of fired samples depended on the choice of the divalent ion and the content of the alumina filler. Except for the ZnO modification, all other samples containing 35 wt% filler demonstrated promising densification as they exhibited reasonably high densities of 3.07-3.31 $g/cm^3$ and high shrinkages of 14.0-16.4%. Particularly, the sample containing ZnO was distinguished with large variations compared to the base sample, which can be highlighted with earlier densification and crystallization at unexpectedly low temperatures. The negative effects of the ZnO modification on densification and dielectric properties were thought to be associated with earlier crystallization potentially by influencing effective densification via viscous flow. As an optimum composition, the sample containing only CaO showed the most promising characteristics such as $k{\sim}8.05$ and $tan{\delta}{\sim}0.0018$ when 35 wt% alumina filler was used.
Fabrication possibility of low-shrinkage alumina without oxidation and wetting agent was presented on the basis of observation about oxidation behavior, microstructure and physical characteristics of such reaction agents free Al2O3-Al system. The composition less than Al 10w/o where Al can act as a sintering agent for Al2O3 was excluded. Under the condition of present experiments oxidation of Al2O3-Al system was dependent not on holding time but mainly on oxidation temperature. In thes case of Al powder not comminuted effectively during powder mixing of Al2O3-Al, columnar structure which would act as a hindrance to the densification during sintering developed more during oxidation with higher Al contents, and which made the fabrication of low-shrinkage Al2O3 ceramics impossible. If Al powder was comminuted effectively due to co-mixed Al2O3 characteristics, densification was improved because of no columnar structure and made the fabrication of sintered body with -2.7% dimensional change and 81% relative density possible. As a result, it is possible to fabricate dense low-shrinkage Al2O3 ceramics without oxidation and wetting agent under conditions such as smaller particle size of Al, Al contents below 50v/o, higher green density of Al2O3-Al compact and the use of Al2O3 powder used for high-density ceramics.
The sintering behaviors and process parameters of some compounds (carbides, oxides, sulfides, borides) were investigated experimentally. These compounds were successfully consolidated and showed high densities. Some unique phenomena such as retardation of grain growth, suppression of thermal decomposition and maintenance of initial non-equilibrium phases, were observed by the proper control of process in spark sintering.
the microstructure and mechanical properties of seeded and ball-milled dry gels prepared by boehmite sol-gel method were discussed. The densification of seeded gels was improved with increasing seed content namely the number of seed The number of seed was 1.09, 3.35, 5.72${\times}$1012/cm3 boehmite when seeded with 1, 3, 5wt% respectively The ball milled gel contained about 0.5wt% seed and the number of seed was 4.72${\times}$1012/cm3 boehmite. The sintered density of 5wt% seeded gel was below 80% when sintered at 1300$^{\circ}C$ for 1h. On the other hand that of ball milled gel was very improved and reached to 97% In the case of 3wt% seeded gels the density over 97% was attained when sintered at 1500$^{\circ}C$for 1h. and the grain of the sintered body was several micrometers in size. However the sintered body of ball milled gel showed grain size of submicrometer when sintered at 1300$^{\circ}C$ for 1h. And this specimen showed highest harness value of 1900kg/mm2 The fracture toughness increased with increasing sintering temperature. The sintered body of ball milled gel showed the largest grain size and the highest fracture toughness without regard to sint-ering temperature.

Molybdenum (Mo) is one of the representative refractory metals for its high melting point, superior thermal conductivity, low density and low thermal expansion coefficient. However, due to its high melting point, it is necessary for Mo products to be fabricated at a high sintering temperature of over $1800-2000^{\circ}C$. Because this process is expensive and inefficient, studies to improve sintering property of Mo have been researched actively. In this study, we fabricated Mo nanopowders to lower the sintering temperature of Mo and tried to consolidate the Mo nanopowders through ultra high pressure compaction. We first fabricated Mo nanopowders by a mechano-chemical process to increase the specific surface area of the Mo powders. This process includes a high-energy ball milling step and a reduction step in a hydrogen atmosphere. We compacted the Mo nanopowders with ultra high pressure by magnetic pulsed compaction (MPC) before pressureless sintering. Through this process, we were able to improve the green density of the Mo compacts by more than 20 % and fabricate a high density Mo sintered body with more than a 95 % sintered density at relatively low temperature.
This study investigated the electrochemical recovery of palladium in a HCl solution that is used for palladium leaching. The high acidity of HCl solution and the low concentration of Pd ions increased the cathodic overpotential and reduced the limiting current density. Lowering the current density produced dense deposits; however, they were under high tensile stress. Raising the temperature affected both the densification and the stress, which enabled the attainment of dense Pd deposits under low stress. Lowering the current density and raising the temperature up to 70$^{\circ}C$ was recommended for the recovery of palladium as sound bulk Pd deposits. Current efficiency was over 85% at the initial stage of recovery may decrease the current efficiency, since a low Pd ion concentration results in a low limiting current density.
