  • In this study, effects of alkali swelling at low concentration below 2 percent on properties of hardwood bleached kraft pulp (HwBKP) were elucidated. Swelling treatment of HwBKP was performed at various NaOH concentrations with/without beating. Then, the swelling characteristics of pulp fiber was evaluated by measuring the solvent retention values such as water retention value (WRV) and isopropyl alcohol retention value (LRV). It was found that fiber characteristics were influenced by NaOH swelling even at low alkali concentration and beating treatment as well. The values of WRV and LRV were decreased when the alkali concentration was increased. It is the result from the decreased acidic groups of pulp which were formed during beating. The acidic groups could be neutralized and then removed by alkali. The difference between WRV and LRV was decreased with increasing alkali concentration while the difference was increased when the alkali swollen pulp was beaten. In addition, the crystalline structure of HwBKP was almost not changed while the crystallinity was influenced by swelling treatment at a low alkali concentration.

  • We investigated the effects of supplementing low energy diets with lysolecithin and sodium stearoyl-2-lactylate on growth performance and nutrient digestibility in broilers. A total of 768 1-d-old Ross 308, mixed gender broiler chicks with an average initial body weight of 44.3 g, were used in a 35-d feeding trial. Broiler chicks were sorted into pens with 16 birds per pen and every treatment consisted of 12 pens (192 chickens per treatment). Treatments were: 1) PC: basal diet, 2) NC: PC-100 kcal, 3) T1: NC+ 0.08% lysolecithin, and, 4) T2: NC + 0.04% sodium stearoyl-2-lactylate. Body weight gain (BWG), feed intake (FI) and feed conversion ratio (FCR) were measured on a weekly basis. Chromium oxide was added to the diets at 0.2% on the last week of the experiment, as a marker for digestibility. Dietary treatments had no effect on growth performance for days 1 to 21. Low energy diet supplemented with lysolecithin and sodium stearoyl-2-lactylate in phase 2 (d 21 to 35) improved body weight gain (P<0.05). Addition of lysolecithin and sodium stearoyl-2-lactylate to the diets improved the digestibility of energy and nitrogen (P<0.05), but digestibility of dry matter was not affected. Overall, addition of an emulsifier to the diet of broiler chickens in the late growth phase enhanced growth performance and digestibility of energy and nitrogen.

  • This study was performed to investigate physicochemical and textural characteristics, and antimicrobial effect for Listeria monocytogenes (LM) in low-fat functional sausages (LFFS) containing sodium lactate (SL) and potassium lactate (PL) during storage at 4℃ for 10 weeks. The LFFS treatments included CTL (Low-fat sausage control), TRT1 (SL 3.3%), TRT2 (SL 2.2% + PL 1.1%), TRT3 (SL 1.1% + PL 2.2%), TRT4 (PL 3.3%). Proximate composition for LFFS were 73.9∼75.2% moisture, 1∼2% fat and 15.5∼15.9% protein, and pH values ranged from 5.8 to 6.5. Expressible moisture (EM, %) and vacuum purge (VP, %) ranged from 22.9 to 33.0 and from 2.7 to 5.3, respectively. EM of CTL, TRT1 and TRT2 increased with increased storage time, however, no differences in VP were observed during storage time. Hunter color values (L, a, b) were not affected by the addition of SL and PL, and storage time (p>0.05). Most textural properties of LFFS were not affected by the addition of SL and PL, except for few cases, but those of CTL tended to increase with increased storage time. The addition of SL and PL into LFFS, alone or in combination, inhibited the microbial growth of inoculated LM during refrigerated storage, resulting in longer shelf-life than the control.

  • Purpose: This study was conducted to identify blood pressure control rate and related factors in hypertensive patients. Methods: Data were collected using face to face survey with measuring blood pressure from 268 hypertensive patients. Results: Subjects without spouses were 2.19 times more likely to control their blood pressures (p=.002). Whenever subjects came up 1 score in the low sodium diet score, they were 1.37 times more likely to control their blood pressures (p=.044). The possibility of blood pressure control rose 1.58 times per point in the stress management score (p=.011) and the sleep and rest score (p=.002). Conclusion: It is important to develop education and intervention program of lifestyle regarding low sodium diet, stress management and sleep and rest, in order to improve the blood pressure control.

  • Nutrient evaluation of sago fibre showed that the fibre has potential and could be utilized as feed for ruminants. However, as a source of nutrients, it has limitations arising from low intake, digestibility, crude protein and minerals content. The present study showed that the sago fibre is low in crude protein (3.3%) and high in neutral detergent fibre (72.5%) and acid detergent lignin (25.8%) contents. Treatment of sago fibre with urea increased the crude protein content from 3.3 to 16.7%. Both urea and sodium hydroxide treatment decreased the neutral detergent fibre level from 72.5 to 59 and 56.5%, respectively. Rumen degradation of sago fibre by nylon bag showed that both urea and sodium hydroxide treatments increased dry matter and organic matter disappearance of the fibre significantly. In vivo digestibility of 2% urea treated sago fibre was 47.5% and intake of the fibre was 1.57% of body weight of the lamb.

  • This paper presents an experimental study of the sulfate resistance of mortars and pastes exposed to sodium sulfate solutions up to one year. In order to check deterioration modes due to sulfate attack, the sodium sulfate solution was varied at three concentration steps (3,380, 10,140 and 33,800 ppm of $SO_4^{2-}$ ions), and maintained at ambient temperature. The tests include a visual examination, expansion and compressive strength loss measurements as well as x-ray diffraction tests. The experimental data indicated that the use of cement with a low $C_3A$ content and low silicate ratio has a beneficial effect on the sulfate attack of mortars. In contrast, the mortars with a high $C_3A$ content and high silicate ratio became severely degraded due to the formation of ettringite, gypsum and/or thaumasite in the cement matrix.

  • Recently, the use of ALC has became increasingly popular. ALC is a unique building material. Because of its cellular nature, it is lightweight, self-insulating, sound and fireproof, as well as insect and mold resistant. Furthermore, ALC is free of VOCs and various fibers associated with wood and glass wool construction. However, ALC have high water absorption, low compressive strength and popout the origin of the low surface strength in its properties. These properties make troubles under construction such as cracking and popout. Thus, this study is to improve the fundamental strength by controls of increasing of admixtures, and grain size. Admixtures make use of metakaolin, silica fume, sodium silicate and sodium hydroxide. From the test result, the ALC using admixture have a good fundamental properties compared with plain specimen. Compressive strength, specific strength and abrasion's ratio were improved depending on increasing admixtures ratio's, and grain size.
