The earthquake loss assessment framework of ductile reinforced concrete (or RC) frame using component-performance -based methodology was studied in this paper. The elasto-plastic rotation angle was used as the damage indicator of structural component, and the damage-to-loss model was proposed on the basis of the deformation indicator of structural component. Dynamic instability during incremental dynamic analysis was taken as collapse criterion, and column failure was taken as criterion that structure has to be demolished. Expected earthquake losses of low-rise, mid-rise and high-rise RC frames were discussed. The expected earthquake loss encompassed collapse loss, demolition loss and repair loss. Furthermore, component groups of RC frame were divided into structural components, nonstructural components and rugged components. The results indicate that ductile RC frame is more likely to be demolished than collapse, especially in low-rise and mid-rise RC frames. Furthermore, the less collapse margin ratio the structure has, the more demolition probability the structure will suffer under rare earthquake. The demolition share of total earthquake loss might be more prominent than repair share and collapse share in ductile RC frame.
Since low-floor apartments ate vertically closer to patting lots and roadways, it is hypothesized that residents in low-floor apartments may be exposed to elevated ambient levels of motet vehicle emissions compared to residents in high-floor apartments. The present study examined this hypothesis by measuring two motor vehicle source-related pollutants(CO and PM10) in ambient air of high-rise apartment buildings within the boundary of industrial complexes according to atmospheric stability The ambient air concentrations of CO and PM10 were higher for low-floor apartments than for high-floor apartments, regardless of atmospheric stability, The median concentration ratio of the low-floor air to high-floor alt ranged from 1.3 to 2.0, depending upon atmospheric stabilities, seasons and compounds. Moreover, the CO and PM10 concentrations were significantly higher in the winter and in the summer, regardless of the Hoot height. Atmospheric stability also was suggested to be important for the residents' exposure of high-rise apartment buildings to both CO and PM10. The median ratios of surface inversion air to non-surface inversion air ranged from 1.2 to 1.7 and from 1.0 to 1.6 lot PM10 and CO, respectively, depending upon seasons. Conclusively, these parameters(apartment floor height, season, and atmospheric stability) should be considered when evaluating the exposure of residents, living in high-rise apartment buildings, to CO and PM10. Meanwhile, the median PMl0 outdoor concentrations were close to or higher than the Korean annual standards for PM10, and the maximum PM10 concentrations substantially exceeded the Korean PM10 standard, thus suggesting the need for a management strategy for ambient PM 10. Neither the median nor the maximum outdoor CO concentrations, however, were higher than the Korean CO standard.
Skewness and kurtosis are important higher-order statistics for simulating non-Gaussian wind pressure series on low-rise buildings, but their predictions are less studied in comparison with those of the low order statistics as mean and rms. The distribution gradients of skewness and kurtosis on roofs are evidently higher than those of mean and rms, which increases their prediction difficulty. The conventional artificial neural networks (ANNs) used for predicting mean and rms show unsatisfactory accuracy in predicting skewness and kurtosis owing to the limited capacity of shallow learning of ANNs. In this work, the deep neural networks (DNNs) model with the ability of deep learning is introduced to predict the skewness and kurtosis on a low-rise building. For obtaining the optimal generalization of the DNNs model, the hyper parameters are automatically determined by Bayesian Optimization (BO). Moreover, for providing a benchmark for future studies on predicting higher order statistics, the data sets for training and testing the DNNs model are extracted from the internationally open NIST-UWO database, and the prediction errors of all taps are comprehensively quantified by various error metrices. The results show that the prediction accuracy in this study is apparently better than that in the literature, since the correlation coefficient between the predicted and experimental results is 0.99 and 0.75 in this paper and the literature respectively. In the untrained cornering wind direction, the distributions of skewness and kurtosis are well captured by DNNs on the whole building including the roof corner with strong non-normality, and the correlation coefficients between the predicted and experimental results are 0.99 and 0.95 for skewness and kurtosis respectively.

In high-density high-rise cities such as Hong Kong, buildings account for nearly 90% of energy consumption and 61% of carbon emissions. Therefore, it is important to study the design of buildings, especially high-rise buildings, to achieve lower carbon emissions in the city. The carbon emissions of a building consist of embodied carbon from the production of construction materials and operational carbon from energy consumption during daily operation (e.g., air-conditioning and lighting). An integrated analysis of both types of carbon emissions can strengthen the design of low carbon buildings, but most of the previous studies concentrated mainly on either embodied or operational carbon. Therefore, the primary objective of this study is to develop a holistic methodology framework considering both embodied and operational carbon, in order to enhance the sustainable design of low carbon high-rise buildings. The framework will be based on the building information modeling (BIM) technology because BIM can be integrated with simulation systems and digital models of different disciplines, thereby enabling a holistic design and assessment of low carbon buildings. Structural analysis program is first coupled with BIM to validate the structural performance of a building design. The amounts of construction materials and embodied carbon are then quantified by a BIM-based program using the Dynamo programming interface. Operational carbon is quantified by energy simulation software based on the green building extensible Markup Language (gbXML) file from BIM. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) will be applied to analyze the ambient wind effect on indoor temperature and operational carbon. The BIM-based framework serves as a decision support tool to compare and explore more environmentally-sustainable design options to help reduce the carbon emissions in buildings.
An experimental investigation to study the behavior of low rise structural walls using high strength concrete is presented. The test parameter included in the study were the level of constant axial load. The shear strength of walls is predicted by the design provision given in the current the American Concrete Institute Building Code ACI 318-95 and Architectural Institute Japan Code AIJ. The predictions are compared with the test results reported herein as well as those available in the literature.
The evolution of multi-family housing in Cheongju can be divided by four stages which are a introduction period from 1972 to 1980, a popularization period from 1981 to 1989, a expansion period from 1990 to 1997, and a stagnation period after 1998. In the introduction period, the multi-family housings were mainly low-rise buildings because a government policy which focused on extension of the apartments for the low-income influenced multi-family housing constructions. During the popularization period, the multi-family housings were still low-rise but houses in various sizes were introduced. That was because the Housing Site Developments were started and private companies' participations followed them increasingly. As a result of vigorous participations of private companies and massive developments of housing sites, the multi-family housings in the expansion period started to show constructions of complex and trends of high density and high rising. Finally, in the stagnation period, a rate of the supply of the small houses, whose size was below $60m^2$ of exclusive, area was increased and extreme high-rise apartments emerged. High rising and density were the mainstream of the construction concepts. During this period, the growth of multi-family housing marked low. The reason was that a downturn in economy led private companies to shrink their constructions.

Chinese high-rise hotels are large in size, densely populated, and have a lot of combustibles. Once a fire occurs, the fire and smoke spread rapidly, and once a fire accident occurs, it is easy to cause a large number of deaths. Fires have a greater impact on special populations such as elderly and children who move slowly. At present, research mainly focuses on the impact of high-rise building structures on evacuation consequences, but there is very little research on the safety evacuation consequences of elderly people and children in high-rise hotels. This paper focuses on the elderly and children living in high-rise hotels in China. We studied three scenarios in which the elderly and children were placed on high floors, middle floors, and low floors. For the above three scenarios, use pathfinder software for simulation, According to the simulation results, when the elderly and children are mainly concentrated in the lower floors (2nd and 3rd floors), the evacuation time is the shortest, 147 seconds. The evacuation time for the elderly and children on the middle floor (6th and 7th floors) is the longest, at 191.5 seconds. Compared to being placed on high floors, safely staying on low floors for all ages reduces evacuation time by 44.5 seconds and improves evacuation efficiency by 23.24%. The final safety evacuation plan is that in daily safety management, hotels should arrange elderly and children occupants on lower floors as much as possible to reduce the total evacuation time and improve personnel evacuation efficiency. This has great guiding significance in the safety management of high-rise hotels.
The high-rise building is a dramatic phenomenon and a powerful expression of architecture in the modern civilization. The architecture of these high-rise buildings has been developed with mutual contributions of architectural aesthetic form and advanced technologies. Architecturally the significant evolution of tall buildings from ancient towers is a "change of function" from some religious symbols to a commercial concept that has aesthetically become acceptable with the changing of modern society and culture driven by a technological evolution. Generally, this commercial function in the evolution of high-rise building is office where high-rise working style is simply a necessity to meet quantitative market demands since this style in major cities around world has been changed from low-rise to high-rise during the last several decades in influenced of the modern industrial society. To achieve optimum spaces with architectural aesthetics in the high-rise building, the design has become collaborative, requiring the input of architects, engineers, economists, and other consultants. Hence, architects must deeply understand the basic planning theories of high-rise buildings and try to find optimum planning between architectural aesthetics and other issues. For the approach, we can firstly start with measurement and analysis of the planning use situation for major planning issues of high-rise buildings in practice. Therefore, this study is to analysis Design Elements and to find commonly used planning strategies, tectonic, of high-rise building in practice. It will give a chance to confirm commonly used planning and then becomes the starting point of the planning development of high-rise buildings based on practical planning issues.
This study was performed to evaluate the slump flow, air content, setting time, compressive strength, adiabatic temperature rise and diffusion coefficient of chloride used ordinary portland cement, crushed coarse aggregate, crushed sand, river sand, fly ash, limestone powder, blast furnace slag powder and superplasticizer to find optimum mix design of low carbon green concrete for structures. The performances of low carbon green concrete used fly ash, limestone powder and blast furnace slag powder were remarkably improved. This fact is expected to have economical effects in the manufacture of low carbon green concrete for structures. Accordingly, the fly ash, limestone powder and blast furnace slag powder can be used for low carbon green concrete material.
Today 55 percent of the population in the world lives in urban areas which is expected to increase to 68 percent by the year 2050. In the cities, high-rise buildings as symbols of the modern cityscape are dominating the skylines, but the data to demonstrate their embodied energy and environmental impacts are scarce, compared to low- or mid-rise buildings. Reducing the embodied energy and environmental impacts of buildings is critical as about 42 percent of primary energy use and 39 percent of the global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions come from the building sector. However, it is an overlooked area in embodied energy and environmental impacts of high-rise buildings. Life cycle assessment (LCA) is a widely used tool to quantify the embodied energy and environmental impacts of the building sector. LCA combined with Building Information Modeling (BIM) can simplify data acquisition of the building as well as provide both tools with feedback. Several studies recognize that the integration of BIM and LCA can simplify data acquisition of the building as well as provide tools with feedback. This article provides an overview of literature on BIM-based of embodied energy and environmental impacts of high-rise buildings. It also compares with different LCA methodologies. Finally, major strategies to reduce embodied energy and environmental impacts of high-rise buildings, research limitations and trends in the field are covered.
