Low-rank representation methods already achieve many applications in the image reconstruction. However, for high-gradient image patches with rich texture details and strong edge information, it is difficult to find sufficient similar patches. Existing low-rank representation methods usually destroy image critical details and fail to preserve edge structure. In order to promote the performance, a new representation-based image super-resolution reconstruction method is proposed, which combines gradient domain guided image filter with the structure-constrained low-rank representation so as to enhance image details as well as reveal the intrinsic structure of an input image. Firstly, we extract the gradient domain guided filter of each atom in high resolution dictionary in order to acquire high-frequency prior information. Secondly, this prior information is taken as a structure constraint and introduced into the low-rank representation framework to develop a new model so as to maintain the edges of reconstructed image. Thirdly, the approximate optimal solution of the model is solved through alternating direction method of multipliers. After that, experiments are performed and results show that the proposed algorithm has higher performances than conventional state-of-the-art algorithms in both quantitative and qualitative aspects.

Most available methods of facial gender recognition work well under a constrained situation, but the performances of these methods have decreased significantly when they are implemented under unconstrained environments. In this paper, a method via low-rank and collaborative representation is proposed for facial gender recognition in the wild. Firstly, the low-rank decomposition is applied to the face image to minimize the negative effect caused by various corruptions and dynamical illuminations in an unconstrained environment. And, we employ the collaborative representation to be as the classifier, which using the much weaker $l_2-norm$ sparsity constraint to achieve similar classification results but with significantly lower complexity. The proposed method combines the low-rank and collaborative representation to an organic whole to solve the task of facial gender recognition under unconstrained environments. Extensive experiments on three benchmarks including AR, CAS-PERL and YouTube are conducted to show the effectiveness of the proposed method. Compared with several state-of-the-art algorithms, our method has overwhelming superiority in the aspects of accuracy and robustness.

In multi-view subspace clustering, how to integrate the complementary information between perspectives to construct a unified representation is a critical problem. In the existing works, the unified representation is usually constructed in the original data space. However, when the data representation in each view is very diverse, the unified representation derived directly in the original data domain may lead to a huge information loss. To address this issue, different to the existing works, inspired by the latest revelation that the data across all perspectives have a very similar or close spectral block structure, we try to construct the unified representation in the spectral embedding domain. In this way, the complementary information across all perspectives can be fused into a unified representation with little information loss, since the spectral block structure from all views shares high consistency. In addition, to capture the global structure of data on each view with high accuracy and robustness both, we propose a novel low-rank approximation via the tight lower bound on the rank function. Finally, experimental results prove that, the proposed method has the effectiveness and robustness at the same time, compared with the state-of-art approaches.
Low-Rank Representation (LRR) based methods are widely used in many practical applications, such as face clustering and object detection, because they can guarantee high prediction accuracy when used to constructing graphs in graph - based semi-supervised learning. However, in order to solve the LRR problem, it is necessary to perform singular value decomposition on the square matrix of the number of data points for each iteration of the algorithm; hence the calculation is inefficient. To solve this problem, we propose an improved and faster LRR method based on the recently published Fast LRR (FaLRR) and suggests ways to introduce and optimize additional constraints on the underlying optimization goals in order to address the fact that the FaLRR is fast but actually poor in classification problems. Our experiments confirm that the proposed method finds a better solution than LRR does. We also propose Fast MLRR (FaMLRR), which shows better results when the goal of minimizing is added.

With the sharp increase in the volume of literature data, researchers must spend considerable time and energy locating desired papers. A paper recommendation is the means necessary to solve this problem. Unfortunately, the large amount of data combined with sparsity makes personalizing papers challenging. Traditional matrix decomposition models have cold-start issues. Most overlook the importance of information and fail to consider the introduction of noise when using side information, resulting in unsatisfactory recommendations. This study proposes a paper recommendation method (PR-SLSMF) using document-level representation learning with citation-informed transformers (SPECTER) and low-rank and sparse matrix factorization; it uses SPECTER to learn paper content representation. The model calculates the similarity between papers and constructs a weighted heterogeneous information network (HIN), including citation and content similarity information. This method combines the LSMF method with HIN, effectively alleviating data sparsity and cold-start issues and avoiding topic drift. We validated the effectiveness of this method on two real datasets and the necessity of adding side information.

MPEG-NNR (Compression of Neural Network for Multimedia Content Description and Analysis) aims to define a compressed and interoperable representation of trained neural networks. In this paper, we present a low-rank approximation to compress a CNN used for image compression, which is one of MPEG-NNR use cases. In the presented method, the low-rank approximation decomposes one 2D kernel matrix of weights into two 1D kernel matrix values in each convolution layer to reduce the data amount of weights. The evaluation results show that the model size of the original CNN is reduced to half as well as the inference runtime is reduced up to about 30% with negligible loss in PSNR.

Intelligent video surveillance systems have been developed to monitor global areas and find specific target objects using a large-scale database. However, person re-identification presents some challenges, such as pose change and occlusions. To solve the problems, this paper presents an improved person re-identification method using sparse representation and saliency-based dictionary construction. The proposed method consists of three parts: i) feature description based on salient colors and textures for dictionary elements, ii) orthogonal atom selection using cosine similarity to deal with pose and viewpoint change, and iii) measurement of reconstruction error to rank the gallery corresponding a probe object. The proposed method provides good performance, since robust descriptors used as a dictionary atom are generated by weighting some salient features, and dictionary atoms are selected by reducing excessive redundancy causing low accuracy. Therefore, the proposed method can be applied in a large scale-database surveillance system to search for a specific object.

In order to meet the requirements of background change, illumination variation, moving shadow interference and high accuracy in object detection of moving camera, and strive for real-time and high efficiency, this paper presents an object detection algorithm based on sparse approximation recursion and sparse coding migration in subspace. First, low-rank sparse decomposition is used to reduce the dimension of the data. Combining with dictionary sparse representation, the computational model is established by the recursive formula of sparse approximation with the video sequences taken as subspace sets. And the moving object is calculated by the background difference method, which effectively reduces the computational complexity and running time. According to the idea of sparse coding migration, the above operations are carried out in the down-sampling space to further reduce the requirements of computational complexity and memory storage, and this will be adapt to multi-scale target objects and overcome the impact of large anomaly areas. Finally, experiments are carried out on VDAO datasets containing 59 sets of videos. The experimental results show that the algorithm can detect moving object effectively in the moving camera with uniform speed, not only in terms of low computational complexity but also in terms of low storage requirements, so that our proposed algorithm is suitable for detection systems with high real-time requirements.

Detecting and capturing 3D human structures from the intensity-based image sequences is an inherently arguable problem, which attracted attention of several researchers especially in real-time activity recognition (Real-AR). These Real-AR systems have been significantly enhanced by using depth intensity sensors that gives maximum information, in spite of the fact that conventional Real-AR systems are using RGB video sensors. This study proposed a depth-based routine-logging Real-AR system to identify the daily human activity routines and to make these surroundings an intelligent living space. Our real-time routine-logging Real-AR system is categorized into two categories. The data collection with the use of a depth camera, feature extraction based on joint information and training/recognition of each activity. In-addition, the recognition mechanism locates, and pinpoints the learned activities and induces routine-logs. The evaluation applied on the depth datasets (self-annotated and MSRAction3D datasets) demonstrated that proposed system can achieve better recognition rates and robust as compare to state-of-the-art methods. Our Real-AR should be feasibly accessible and permanently used in behavior monitoring applications, humanoid-robot systems and e-medical therapy systems.
