In the present study, rotating bending fatigue tests have been carried out in three kinds of carbon steel specimens; an annealed low carbon steel, an annealed high carbon steel and quenched-tempered high carbon steel; with a small artificial surface defect that might exist in real structures. Fatigue crack lengths have been observed by a method of replication in order to investigate the growth characteristic of fatigue crack in the viewpoints of strength of materials and fracture mechanics. The main results obtained are as follows: 1) The effect of a small surface defect upon the reduction of fatigue limit is considerably large, and the rate of fatigue limit reduction grows in the following order; annealed low carbon steel(mild steel), annealed high carbon steel, quenched-tempered high carbon steel. 2) When the growth rate of surface crack length(2a) was investigated in the viewpoints of fracture mechanics based upon $ ${\Delta}K_{\varepsilon}$, the dependence of stress level and of surface defect size disappear, and there exists a linear relationships between d(2a)/dN and ${\Delta}K_{{\varepsilon}t},\;\Delta_{{\varepsilon}t}\sqrt{{\pi}a}$, on log. plot, i.e, $d(2a)/dN={C{\cdot}{\Delta}K_{\varepsilon}}^3_t$, where ${\Delta}_{{\varepsilon}t}\sqrt{{\pi}a}$ a is the cyclic total strain intensity factor range.
Steel was exposed in an atmospheric environment, and atmospheric environmental factors that include chloride, humidity, SO2, NO2 etc. induced the corrosion of steel. Corrosivity categories classified by SO2 and chloride deposition rate were low, but those classified by TOW were high in the Korean Peninsula, and on these environmental categories, the corrosivity of atmospheres classified by corrosion rate in carbon steel was low medium, C2-C3, and medium, C3 for zinc, copper, and aluminum. This work performed the outdoor exposure test for 10 years at 14 areas in Korea and calculated the atmospheric corrosion rate of carbon steel. The atmospheric corrosion behavior of carbon steel is discussed based on the various corrosion factors. When the corrosion product forms on carbon steel by atmospheric corrosion, cracks may also be formed, and through these cracks, the environmental factors can penetrate into the interior of the product, detach some of the corrosion products and finally corrode locally. Thus, the maximum corrosion rate was about 7.3 times greater than the average corrosion rate. The color difference and glossiness of carbon steel by the 10 year-outdoor exposure tests are discussed based on the corrosion rate and the environmental factors.
Metal matrix composites(MMC) consist of metal matrix into which is distributed a second solid phase. The normal intension is to develop a material with superior mechanical properties (for example increased toughness, stiffness and wear resistance) compared to those inherent in the matrix component. In this study, WC-12%Co/low carbon steel MMC overlays have been prepared by Gas Metal Arc Welding(GMAW) according to feeding rate of WC-12%Co grit. The macro and microstructures were examined using optical microscopy (OM) and scanning electron microscopy(SEM) each other. The characteristics of hardness and wear resistance have been investigated. WC-12%Co/low carbon steel MMC overlays which have been taken good beads without porosity and cracks were manufactured by method of GMAW. Matrix of overlayed surface was seen as fish bone and faceted dendrite structures. It was known that structures were iron tungsten carbides, Fe$_{6}$W$_{6}$C which have been occurred by melting of WC-12%Co grits. After MMC had been tested by block-roll wear test it was known that WC-12%Co/low carbon steel MMC has a excellent wear resistance by exiting Fe6w6c and WC-12%Co grit. The consequence was that region of overlay with Fe$_{6}$W$_{6}$C phase has been showed a model of adhesive wear, but region of overlay with WC-12%Co grit was restrained as a result of mechanism that wear of WC-12%Co grit is not adhesive but fracture.racture.
Carbon diffusion of ultra low carbon steel treated at $880^{\circ}C$ and $930^{\circ}C$ for 10, 30, 60 and 120 minutes was investigated using optical microscopy, SAM, EPMA, and Micro Vickers. The martensite patterns of the specimens treated at $880^{\circ}C$ and $930^{\circ}C$ were different. Martensite in the ferrite region was found in the specimen treated at $880^{\circ}C$ because of grain boundary diffusion. Such phenomena is explained by a carbon diffusion model.

VIRGO 104 is a low carbon martensitic stainless steel that is applied to the famous Three Gorges Project. By using VOD melting process VIRGO 104 has low carbon and [H] [O] contents, and shows excellent mechanical properties and weldability. The best solution to guarantee welding quality is PWHT by 600 Cx8h.
This work was tamed out to apply a laser welding technique in joining between a Zn coated low carbon steel plate(SECC) and a free cutting carbon steel shaft(SUM24L) with or without W coating. Experiments were carried out and analysed by applying the FD(factorial design)method to obtain the optimum Laser welding condition. Optical microscopy, SEM, TEM and XRD analyses were performed in order to observe the microstructures in the fusion zone and the HAZ. Mechanical properties of the welded specimens were examined by microhardness test, tensile test and twist test. There was no flawed Zn in the fusion zone by EDS analysis. This means that during the welding process, Zn gas could be eliminated by appropriate shielding gas flow rate and butt welding gap. Ni coating itself did not influence on the tensile strength and hardness. However, twist bending strength and the weld depth of the Ni-coated free cutting carbon steel were lower as compared with those of the uncoated free cutting carbon steel. It was attributed to a lower absorbance of laser beam to the shin Ni surface. According to the results of the factorial design tests, the twist bending strength of welded specimens was primarily affected by pulse width, laser power, frequency and speed.
The behavior of the non-equilibrium grain boundary segregation of boron in low carbon steel was studied through a particle tracking autoradiography. The behavior of the non-equilibrium grain boundary segregation of boron during continuous cooling was compared with the isothermal kinetics of the non-equilibrium grain boundary segregation of boron at the holding temperature using an effective time method. On the basis of the experiments, the cooling rate dependence of the non-equilibrium segregation of boron was explained using the time dependence of the non-equilibrium segregation of boron in low carbon steel. The experimental observations for the cooling rate dependence of the grain boundary segregation of boron are in good agreement with the time dependence of the grain boundary segregation of boron. The mechanisms of the non-equilibrium segregation of boron during cooling in low carbon steel are also discussed.
The present study tackles the metallurgical subjects involving the thin slab-direct hot rolling process, i.e. mini-mill process. In order to clarify the effect of chemical composition of steel and MnS precipitation behaviors on the development of edge cracking during hot rolling, the content of manganese and sulfur in low carbon steel was varied and the isothermal treatment prior to roughing was applied. Edge cracking during roughing in the hot-rolling process of mini-mill was effectively prevented by means of the isothermal treatment at 115$0^{\circ}C$ for 5 minutes in the 0.4% manganese steel containing sulfur lower than 0.013%. With the increase in manganese content in low carbon steel, coarser MnS developed. The edge cracking index which denotes the total length of edge crack per unit edge-length of rolled specimens was proposed in this paper. It was found that the edge cracking index linearly decreased with the increase in the ratio of MnS.
The protection of steel surfaces against wear is a practical problem far agricultural, mining and manufacturing industries. Commercial processes are available in which a hard tungsten carbides rich steel layer is formed on the surface of carbon steel digging, drilling and gouging tools to improve their wear resistance. The nature of the interaction of the tungsten carbide with the steel matrix is important in determining the wear and corrosion properties of the resulting metal matrix composites(MMC). In the study, WC-12%Co/low carbon steel MMC overlays have been prepared by gas metal arc welding(GMAW) according to size of WC-12%Co grits. The characteristics wear resistance and wear mechanism have been investigated in relation to the experiment conditions each other. After MMC overlay had been tested by rubber wheel abrasion test, it was known that MMC overlay has a excellent wear resistance. Fe$_{6}$W$_{6}$C carbides of matrix in overlays were not important to restrain rubber wheal abrasion wear. Wear loss is proportioned to a applied load according to time. On the case of low load, wear occurred severely in the matrix of overlay more than WC-12%Co grit, on the contrary it is reverse on the case of high load because of fracture of WC-12%Co grits.its.
This study is for investigating the effect of induction heating with various alloy elements to manufacture the pre-heat treated steels of 100kgf/$mm^2$ for cold heading. For four kinds of steels, the condition of induction heating (especially, induction tempering) were observed, and their microstructure and tensile and compressive properties were investigated. The middle carbon steel and the low carbon Cr-Mo steel are needed the higher Grange-Baughman tempering parameter than that of the low carbon Cr steel to obtain 100kgf/$mm^2$ tensile strength. For accomplishing the pre-heat treated steel of 100kgf/$mm^2$ tensile strength having advanced cold heading. It is needed that the pre-heat treated steel is manufactured by induction quenching and tempering with the low carbon alloy steel to have the high ratio of ferrite and the fine globular cementite simultaneously.
