  • To establish low-temperature process conditions, process-property correlation has been investigated for Ga-doped ZnO (GZO) thin films deposited by pulsed DC magnetron sputtering. Thickness of GZO films and deposition temperature were varied from 50 to 500 nm and from room temperature to $250^{\circ}C$, respectively. Electrical properties of the GZO films initially improved with increase of temperature to $150^{\circ}C$, but deteriorated subsequently with further increase of the temperature. At lower temperatures, the electrical properties improved with increasing thickness; however, at higher temperatures, increasing thickness resulted in deteriorated electrical properties. Such changes in electrical properties were correlated to the microstructural evolution, which is dependent on the deposition temperature and the film thickness. While the GZO films had c-axis preferred orientation due to preferred nucleation, structural disordering with increasing deposition temperature and film thickness promoted grain growth with a-axis orientation. Consequently, it was possible to obtain a good electrical property at relatively low deposition temperature with small thickness.

  • It has been recognized that the mechanical properties of structural steels can be accepted very greatly in a state of normal temperature. While, under low temperature conditions the properties of the structural steels may not be appropriately achieved. When the various and particular structures will be constructed in an intense cold region afterward, the mechanical properties of a stainless steel under low temperature condition must be investigated. The purpose of this paper is to account for the fracture mechanics of structures in the state of low temperatures. The fracture toughness was examined through an experimental test from which the tensile strength and impact values of STS 304 were obtained. In order to demonstrate the present studies, the fracture toughness was compared with the test results for SWS 50 published previously by an author.

  • This paper aims to evaluate the variation in the mechanical properties of carbon/epoxy composites under in situ low- and high-temperature environments. In situ low- and high-temperature environments were simulated with temperature ranging from $-40^{\circ}C$ to $220^{\circ}C$ using an environmental chamber and furnace. The variation in the mechanical properties of the composites was measured for longitudinal and transverse tensile properties, in-plane shear properties and interlaminar shear strength. Under the low temperature of $-40^{\circ}C$, all mechanical properties increased moderately compared to the baseline properties measured at room temperature. The changes in the longitudinal tensile properties decreased moderately with increasing temperature. However, transverse tensile properties, in-plane shear properties and interlaminar shear strength each showed a significant drop due to the glass transition behavior of the matrix after $140^{\circ}C$. Notably, the tensile property value near $100^{\circ}C$ increased compared to baseline property value, which was an unusual occurrence. This behavior was a direct result of post-curing of the epoxy resin due to its exposure to high temperature.

  • Fracture in the titanium carbonitride-metal composites occurs by crack propagation through the carbonitride grains or in the interfaces. Thus, intrinsic properties of the carbonitride need to be enhanced and the interfaces should be also modified to coherent structure to strengthen the composites. Especially, interfacial structure can be the main factor to determine the mechanical properties of titanium carbonitride-metal composites because the interfaces between carbonitride grains and metallic phase are weak parts due to heterogeneous nature of carbonitride and metallic phase. In this paper, methodologies for improving the interfacial structure of titanium carbonitride-metal composites are suggested. Total area of the interfaces can be reduced using solid solution type carbonitrides as raw materials instead of a mixture of various carbonitrides in the composites. Also, synthesis of titanium carbonitride-metal composite powders and the low-temperature sintering of the composite powders for short time can be the way for formation of coherent interfaces. The sintering of the composite powders for short time at low temperature can reduce the potential of formation of interfaces by dissolution and precipitation of carbonitride in the liquid metal. As a result of formation of coherent boundaries due to low-temperature and short-time sintering, interfaces between titanium carbonitride grains and metallic phase have the favorable structure for the enhanced fracture toughness. It is believed that the low-temperature sintering of solid solution type composite powders for short time can be the way to improve the low toughness of the titanium carbonitride-metal composites.

  • The 2-step low temperature plasma processes (the combined carburizing and post-nitriding) were carried out for improving both the surface hardness and corrosion resistance of AISI 316L stainless steel. The effects of processing time and temperature on the surface properties during nitriding step were investigated. The expanded austenite (${\gamma}_N$) was formed on all of the treated surface. The thickness of ${\gamma}_N$ was increased up to about $20{\mu}m$ and the thickness of entire hardened layer was determined to be about $40{\mu}m$. The surface hardness reached up to $1,200HV_{0.1}$ which is about 5 times higher than that of untreated sample ($250HV_{0.1}$). The thickness of ${\gamma}_N$ and concentration of N on the surface were increased with increasing processing time and temperature. The corrosion resistance in 2-step low temperature plasma processed austenitic stainless steels was enhanced more than that in the untreated austenitic stainless steels due to a high concentration of N on the surface.

  • The main objective of this work was studying the influence of paraffin oil(PO) on the adhesion properties at low temperature in styrene-butadiene-styrene(SBS) copolymer and crumb rubber(CR) modified asphalt. The temperature susceptibility of SBS/CR asphalt and PO/SBS/CR/asphalt blends were measured by penetration and softening point. Adhesion properties at low temperature and dispersion of modifiers in PO/SBS/CR/asphalt blends were evaluated by universal test machine and florescence microscopy, respectively. The adhesion properties of PO/SBS/CR/asphalt blends at low temperature increased in the proportion of SBS contents with both 5 and 10 wt % of paraffin oil. Results showed that the maximum tensile adhesion strength and toughness energy at $-20^{\circ}C$ were obtained when PO and SBS contents were 10 wt % and 6 wt %, respectively. The addition of PO is effective for enhancing the flexibility of SBS/CR/asphalt blends and leads to the increase of toughness at low temperature.

  • The effect of deformation temperature and manganes contents on the tensile properties of duplex stainless steels with the structure of both ferrite and austenite were investigate. For this investigation, Fe-19% Cr-5% Ni-4~8% Mn alloys were prepared. The result obtained from this experiment are summerized as follows. With decreasing deformation temperature, tensile strengths of duplex stainless steel increased. Elongation showd to be increased and then decreased after representing the highest value at specific temperature. Tensile properties of duplex stainless steel were controlled by TRIP behavior in this experimental range of austenite contents. Tensile strengths decreased with increasing Mn contents. With increasing Mn contents, elongation decreased in the high temperature region, but increased in the low temperature region. The peak temperature representing the maximum elongation were changed to low temperature and the width of peak appeared to be broaden with increasing Mn contents.

  • Automobile industries have been focusing their efforts on the development of exhaust manifolds using high temperature stainless steels. Exhaust manifolds fabricated with stainless steels can be categorized into tubular and cast ones. The former is usually manufactured by forming and welding process and the latter by vacuum casting process. In the present study, high temperature mechanical properties of 5 austenitic and 4 ferritic stainless steels were investigated by performing a series of high temperature tensile and low cycle fatigue tests. One of the austenitic stainless steels was vacuum cast and the others sand cast. Fatigue life of ferritic stainless steels was higher than that of austenitic ones.
