  • Integral equations of self-radiation impedance of a rectangular piston in a rigid infinite baffle are derived using by polar coordinate. The self-radiation impedance is separated by two parts ; self-radiation resistance and self-radiation reactance. Derived integral equations are simulated by numerical method. Based on the numerical results, self-radiation impedance can be obtained in the low and high frequency ranges without any limited conditions.

  • Mutual radiation impedance becomes more important in the design and analysis of acoustic transducers for higher power, better beam pattern, and wider bandwidth at low frequency sonar systems. This review paper focused on literature survey about the researches of mutual radiation impedance in the acoustic transducer arrays over 60 years. The papers of mutual radiation impedance were summarized in terms of transducer array structures on various baffle geometries such as planar, cylindrical, spherical, conformal, spheroidal, and elliptic cylindrical arrays. Then the computation schemes of solving conventional quadruple integral in the definition of mutual radiation impedance were surveyed including spatial convolution method, which reduces the quadruple integral to a double integral for efficient computation.

  • Cystitis and proctitis are defined as inflammation of bladder and rectum respectively. Haemorrhagic cystitis is the most severe clinical manifestation of radiation and chemical cystitis. Radiation proctitis and cystitis are major complications following radiotherapy. Prevention of radiation-induced haemorrhagic cystitis has been investigated using various oral agents with minimal benefit. Bladder irrigation remains the most frequently adopted modality followed by intra-vesical instillation of alum or formalin. In intractable cases, surgical intervention is required in the form of diversion ureterostomy or cystectomy. Proctitis is more common in even low dose ranges but is self-limiting and improves on treatment interruption. However, treatment of radiation proctitis is broadly non-invasive or invasive. Non-invasive treatment consists of non-steroid anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), anti-oxidants, sucralfate, short chain fatty acids and hyperbaric oxygen. Invasive treatment consists of ablative procedures like formalin application, endoscopic YAG laser coagulation or argon plasma coagulation and surgery as a last resort.

  • Autonomous radiation source detection has long been studied for radiation emergencies. Compared to conventional data-driven or path planning methods, deep reinforcement learning shows a strong capacity in source detection while still lacking the generalized ability to the geometry in unknown environments. In this work, the detection task is decomposed into two subtasks: exploration and localization. A hierarchical control policy (HC) is proposed to perform the subtasks at different stages. The low-level controller learns how to execute the individual subtasks by deep reinforcement learning, and the high-level controller determines which subtasks should be executed at the current stage. In experimental tests under different geometrical conditions, HC achieves the best performance among the autonomous decision policies. The robustness and generalized ability of the hierarchy have been demonstrated.

  • This paper presents a study on the radiation characteristics of low-VHF band electrically small antenna for direction finding. Firstly, it is simulated the antenna for mounting on flat ground and tank model(in 40MHz), and measured for mounting 1/10 scaled model(in 400 MHz). In case of flat ground feed at ${\phi}=0^{\circ}$, $180^{\circ}$(xz-plane), yz-plane $E_{\phi}$ (H-plane) and xz-plane $E_{\theta}$ (E-plane) radiation patterns are hemispheric omni-direction due to effect of narrow ground side. Then, in case of tank model, it is shown equally in case of the flat ground, yz-plane $E_{\phi}$ (H-plane) and xz-plane $E_{\theta}$ (E-plane) radiation patterns are hemispheric omni-direction nearly without effect of mounting position. Therefore, the suggested electrically small antenna for direction finding, in case of mounting on ground narrow side xz-plane(E-plane), is shown more stable radiation patterns as direction finding antenna.

  • To observe the stimulating effects of low dose gamma radiation on the germination and physiological activity of germinating seeds of old red pepper (Capsicum annuum L. cv Jokwang and cv. Hongkwang), seeds were irradiated at the dose of $2{\sim}50 Gy$. The germination rate of irradiation group was higher than that of the control. Especially it was highest at the early stage of induction. The germination rate at 7 days after sowing in Jokwang and Hongkwang cultivar was high as 74% and 11% at 4 Gy and 8 Gy irradiation group, respectively. The seedling height of Jokwang cultivar was noticeably high at 4 Gy irradiation group and that of Hongkwang cultivar at 8 Gy irradiation group. The protein contents of seedlings from seeds irradiated with low dose gamma radiation of Jokwang cultivar increased at the late stage of induction and that of Hongkwang cultivar at the early stage of induction. Catalase and peroxidase activities of seedlings from seeds irradiated with low dose gamma radiation of Jokwang cultivar increased at 4 Gy irradiation group and that of Hongkwang cultivar at 8 Gy irradiation group.

  • To determine if micronucleus (MN) assay could be used to predict the absorbed dose of victims after accidental radiation exposure, we carried out to assess the absorbed dose depending on the numerical changes of MN in human peripheral blood lymphocytes after $^{60}Co\;{\gamma}-rays$ exposure in the range of 0.25 to 1 Gy, respectively. The MNs were observed at very low doses, and the numerical changes according to doses. Satisfactory dose-effect calibration curve is observed after low dose irradiation of human lymphocytes in vitro. When plotting on a linear scale against radiation dose, the line of best fit was $Y=(0.02{\pm}0.0009)+(0.033{\pm}0.010)D+(0.012{\pm}0.012)D^2$. The dose-response curve for MN induction immediately after irradiation was linear-quadratic and has a significant relationship between the frequencies of MN and dose. These data show a trend towards increase of the numbers of MN with increasing dose. The number of MN in lymphocytes that were observed in the control group is $0.1610{\pm}0.0093/cell$. Accordingly, MN assay in human peripheral lymphocytes could be a useful in viva model for studying radio-protective drug sensitivity or screening test, microdosimertic indicator and radiation-induced target organ injury. Since MN assay is simple, rapid and reproducible, it will also be a biodosimetric indicator for individual dose assessment after accidental exposure.

  • To analyze the observation environment of solar radiation stations operated by the Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA), we analyzed the skyline, Sky View Factor (SVF), and solar radiation due to the surrounding topography and artificial structures using a Digital Elevation Model (DEM), 3D camera, and solar radiation model. Solar energy shielding of 25 km around the station was analyzed using 10 m resolution DEM data and the skyline elevation and SVF were analyzed by the surrounding environment using the image captured by the 3D camera. The solar radiation model was used to assess the contribution of the environment to solar radiation. Because the skyline elevation retrieved from the DEM is different from the actual environment, it is compared with the results obtained from the 3D camera. From the skyline and SVF calculations, it was observed that some stations were shielded by the surrounding environment at sunrise and sunset. The topographic effect of 3D camera is therefore more than 20 times higher than that of DEM throughout the year for monthly accumulated solar radiation. Due to relatively low solar radiation in winter, the solar radiation shielding is large in winter. Also, for the annual accumulated solar radiation, the difference of the global solar radiation calculated using the 3D camera was 176.70 MJ (solar radiation with 7 days; suppose daily accumulated solar radiation 26 MJ) on an average and a maximum of 439.90 MJ (solar radiation with 17.5 days).

  • To investigate the stimulating effects of the low- dose radiation, the seeds of chinese cabbages (Brassica campestris L. cv. Hanyoreum and cv. Tropic emperor) were irradiated at the dose of 0.5 Gy~20 Gy with the ${\gamma}$-ray radition. In case of ‘Hanyoreum’cultivar, there were no significant promoting effects on the germination rate except the 0.5 Gy irradiated group. The increase in seedling height and fresh weight in 8 Gy and 12 Gy irradiated groups was 20% and 40%, respectively, which suggested the stimulating effect of the low-dose radiation on the early growth. In case of‘Tropic emperor’cultivar, the germination rate of 1 Gy irradiated group increased approximately 10% and the seedling height and fresh weight of 1 Gy and 12 Gy irradiated group in the greenhouse 20% on the average, and plant height and fresh weight of 0.5 Gy and 4 Gy irradiated group in the field increased 10% and 20% on the average, respectively.

  • Previous studies suggest that even low-dose irradiation can lead to progressive cognitive decline and memory deficits, which implicates, in part, hippocampal dysfunction in both humans and experimental animals. In this study, whether red ginseng (RG) could attenuate memory impairment was investigated through a passive-avoidance and object recognition memory test, as well as the suppression of hippocampal neurogenesis, using the TUNEL assay and immunohistochemical detection with markers of neurogenesis (Ki-67 and doublecortin (DCX)) in adult mice treated with a relatively low-dose exposure to gamma radiation (0.5 or 2.0 Gy). RG was administered intraperitonially at a dosage of 50 mg/kg of body weight, at 36 and 12 h pre-irradiation and at 30 minutes post-irradiation, or orally at a dosage of 250 mg! kg of body weight/day for seven days before autopsy. In the passive-avoidance and object recognition memory test, the mice that were trained for one day after acute irradiation (2 Gy) showed significant memory deficits compared with the sham controls. The number of TUNEL-positive apoptotic nuclei in the dentate gyrus (DG) was increased 12 h after irradiation. In addition, the number of Ki-67- and DCX-positive cells was significantly decreased. RG treatment prior to irradiation attenuated the memory defect and blocked apoptotic death as well as a decrease in the Ki-67- and DCX-positive cells. RG may attenuate memory defect in a relatively low-dose exposure to radiation in adult mice, possibly by inhibiting the detrimental effect of irradiation on hippocampal neurogenesis.
