  • The aim of this paper is to describe a relatively recent international agreement on the widely debated concepts of: (i) attributing effects to low dose radiation exposure situations that have occurred in the past and, (ii) inferring radiation risk to situations that are planned to occur in the future. An important global consensus has been recently achieved on these fundamental issues at the level of the highest international intergovernmental body: the General Assembly of the United Nations. The General Assembly has welcomed with appreciation a scientific report on attributing health effects to radiation exposure and inferring risks that had been prepared the United Nations Scientific Committee on the Effects of Atomic Radiation (UNSCEAR) following a formal request by the General Assembly.

Kojic Acid Protects C57BL/6 Mice from Gamma-irradiation Induced Damage

  • The radioprotective effects of a single administration of kojic acid (KA) against ionizing radiation were evaluated via assessment of 30-day survival and alterations of peripheral blood parameters of adult C57BL/6 male mice. The 30-day survival rate of mice pretreated with KA (75 or 300 mg/kg body weight, KA75 or KA300) subcutaneously 27 h prior to a lethal dose (8 Gy, 153.52 cGy/min) of gamma irradiation was higher than that of mice irradiated alone (40% or 60% vs 0%). It was observed that the white blood cell (WBC) count/the red blood cell (RBC) count, haemoglobin content, haematocrit and platelet count of mice with or without KA pretreatment as exposed to a sub-lethal dose (4 Gy, 148.14 cGy/min) of gamma irradiation decreased maximally at day 4/day 8 post-irradiation. Although the initial WBC values were low in KA300 or WR-2721 (amifostine) groups, they significantly recovered to normal at day 19, whereas in the control group they did not. The results from the cytotoxicity and cell viability assays demonstrated that KA could highly protect Chinese hamster ovary (CHO) cells against ionizing radiation with low toxicity. In summary, KA provides marked radioprotective effects both in vivo and in vitro.

적외선 복사온도계의 복사원 크기효과 및 자기복사효과 (Size-of-source Effect and Self-radiation Effect of an Infrared Radiation Thermometer)

  • 모든 복사온도계는 복사원 크기효과(Size-of-Source Effect, SSE)와 자기복사효과를 가지고 있다. 복사원의 직경에 따른 복사온도계의 검출기 신호세기로 정의된 SSE의 주원인은 회절이기 때문에 파장에 크게 좌우된다. 본 논문에서는 중저온영역에서 복사온도의 전달표준기로 많이 사용되고 있는 TRT2(Transfer Radiation Thermometer 2, HEITRONICS)의 SSE와 자기복사 특성을 측정하였다. 측정한 TRT2의 SSE 값을 사용하여 계산한 결과 흑체의 온도가 $300^{\circ}C$ 일 때, 개구 직경이 60 mm인 흑체와 10 mm인 흑체의 복사온도 차이가 저온모드($8-14\;{\mu}m$)에서 $3.5^{\circ}C$, 중온모드($3.9\;{\mu}m$)에서 $0.5^{\circ}C$인 것을 알 수 있었다. 또한, 복사온도계 몸체 온도가 $2.6^{\circ}C$ 변화했을 때 자기복사효과 때문에 흑체의 복사온도는 110 mK 다르게 측정되었다.

Clinical outcomes and prognostic factors in patients with mycosis fungoides who underwent radiation therapy in a single institution

  • Purpose: We aimed to evaluate clinical outcomes including progression-free survival (PFS), overall survival (OS), partial response, and complete response in patients who underwent radiation therapy (RT) for mycosis fungoides (MF). Also, we sought to find prognostic factors for clinical outcomes. Materials and Methods: Total 19 patients confirmed with MF between 1999-2015 were retrospectively reviewed. Clinical and treatment characteristics, clinical outcomes, and and toxicities were analyzed. Results: Eleven patients were treated with total skin electron beam radiotherapy (TSEBT) and 8 patients with involved field radiation therapy (IFRT) with median dose of 30 Gy, respectively. The median time interval from diagnosis to RT was 2.6 months (range, 0.4 to 87.3 months). The overall response rate was 100%; 11 patients (57.9%) had a complete response and 8 patients (42.1%) a partial response. The presence of positive lymph node at the time of consultation of RT was associated with lower OS (p = 0.043). In multivariate analysis, PFS was significantly lower for patients with increased previous therapies experienced following RT (p = 0.019) and for patients showing PR during RT (p = 0.044). There were no reported grade 3 or more skin toxicities related with RT. Conclusion: Both IFRT and TSEBT are effective treatment for MF patients. Patients with short disease course before RT or complete response during RT are expected to have longer PFS. Positive lymph node status at the initiation of RT was associated woth poor OS, suggesting other treatment modalities such as low-dose RT for patients with low life-expectancy.

전립선암의 방사선 치료 시 주변 정상장기 피폭선량을 이용한 암발생확률 평가 (Evaluation of Cancer Incidence Rate using Exposure Dose to Surrounding Normal Organs during Radiation Therapy for Prostate Cancer)

  • 전립선암의 방사선치료 시 사용되는 세기조절방사선치료와 부피적회전방사선치료시 발생하는 광중성자선량을 측정하여, 암 발생률을 평가하며 기초자료를 제공하고자 하였다. Rando phantom에 중성자 측정용 광자극발광선량계를 복부와 갑상선에 위치시킨 상태에서 발생하는 광중성자선량을 측정하였다. 연구결과 세기조절방사선치료(7 portal)가 부피적회전방사선치료보다 복부와 갑상선 위치에서 모두 높게 측정되었다. ICRP 103의 명목위험계수를 이용하여 암 발생확률을 평가하였을 때, 세기조절방사선치료시 대장과 갑상선의 피폭으로 인한 암발생확률은 1,000명 당 9.9명 이었으며, 부피적회전방사선치료시는 1,000명 당 3.5명이었다. ALARA(As low as reasonably archievable)원칙에 의거하여 방사선치료계획 수립에 있어서 정상장기들의 피폭선량의 최소화를 위한 가이드라인이 되리라 사료된다.

저선량방사선에 의한 염색체이상 빈도 (Analysis of Chromosomal Aberration Induced by Low Dose of Radiation)

  • 방사선에 의하여 발생하는 인체 말초 혈액 임파구의 불안정 염색체 이상(unstable chromosomal aberration)을 이용한 생물학적 선량측정 법(biological dosimetry)의 기본자료에 필요한 150 cGy이하의 저선량 영역에서의 방사선량-염색체 이상 빈도의 표준곡선을 작성하기 위하여 본 실험을 실행하였다. 불안정 염색체 이상 중 dicentric 또는 ring 염색체 이상을 가진 세포의 빈도는 0, 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 50, 75, 100 및 150 cGy에서 각각 0, 0, 0.4, 0.5, 0.6, 0.8, 1.8, 5.5, 8.0, $18.5\%$이었고 임파구내 dicentric및 ring 염색체 이상의 빈도(Ydr)는 각각 0, 0, 0.004, 0.005, 0.006, 0.009, 0.018, 0.055, 0.084 및 0.207이었다. 염색체 이상을 가진 임파구내의 염색체 이상의 빈도(Qdr)는 75 cGy 이하에서는 1.00 이었고 100 cGy와 150 cGy에서는 각각 1.05및 1.11이었다. 이상의 결과로 보아 1인당 500개의 염색체를 검사할 경우 25 cGy이상의 전신 피폭시 비교적 정확한 선량 측정이 가능함을 알 수 있었으며 15내지 20 cGy의 피폭시에는 피폭여부를 구분할 수 있음을 알 수 있었다. 또한 월간1 mSv 미만의 방사선을 받은 방사선작업 종사자에서의 불안정염색체 이상빈도는 0.0020내지 0.0057로서 허용선량 이하의 저선량에 피폭되는 경우에도 염색체 이상이 있을 수 있음을 알 수 있었다.

  • This letter presents a crosstalk-enhanced polymer thermo-optic digital optical switch operating at a low power consumption. Modified radiation-type attenuators are integrated in a series with a conventional $1{\times}2$ digital optical switch. A low optical crosstalk of less than -45 dB is attained at a low applied switching power of 60 mW, and an insertion loss of about 1.1 dB is exhibited.

  • We examine dosimetry application of irradiated D-fructose materials using electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR). Consequently, we consider that fructose is one of best dosimetry materials. We found that fructose is one of best candidates for dosimetry due to high linearity tilt of EPR signal intensity as a function of dose, irrelevant to photon energy, constant fading value. Also, our results show that fructose materials can be applied as a radiation detector to very weak radiation doses of 0.001 Gray by using EPR at a low temperature (T = 220 K).

XPS STUDY ON DNA DAMAGE BY LOW-ENERGY ELECTRON IRRADIATION

  • After the first report that electrons with sub-ionization energy of DNA could cause single strand breaks or double strand breaks to DNA, there have been various studies to investigate the mechanisms of DNA damage by low-energy electrons. In this paper, we examined the possibility of using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) to analyze the dissociation patterns of the molecular bonds by electron irradiation on DNA thin films and tried to establish the method as a general tool for studying the radiation damage of biomolecules by low energ yelectrons. For the experiment, pBR322 plasmid DNA solution was formed into the films on tantalum plates by lyophilization and was irradiated by 5-eV electrons. Un-irradiated and irradiated DNA films were compared and analyzed using the XPS technique.

Multilevel acceleration of scattering-source iterations with application to electron transport

  • Acceleration/preconditioning strategies available in the SCEPTRE radiation transport code are described. A flexible transport synthetic acceleration (TSA) algorithm that uses a low-order discrete-ordinates ($S_N$) or spherical-harmonics ($P_N$) solve to accelerate convergence of a high-order $S_N$ source-iteration (SI) solve is described. Convergence of the low-order solves can be further accelerated by applying off-the-shelf incomplete-factorization or algebraic-multigrid methods. Also available is an algorithm that uses a generalized minimum residual (GMRES) iterative method rather than SI for convergence, using a parallel sweep-based solver to build up a Krylov subspace. TSA has been applied as a preconditioner to accelerate the convergence of the GMRES iterations. The methods are applied to several problems involving electron transport and problems with artificial cross sections with large scattering ratios. These methods were compared and evaluated by considering material discontinuities and scattering anisotropy. Observed accelerations obtained are highly problem dependent, but speedup factors around 10 have been observed in typical applications.
