  • In this study, fatigue samples were prepared from cylinder head parts that are actually used in domestic (A) and foreign (B) automobiles; high-temperature, high-cycle, and low-cycle fatigue characteristics were then evaluated and compared. A study on the correlation between the microstructural factor and high temperature fatigue characteristic was attempted. The chemical compositions of the heat resistant aluminum alloys above represented A356 (A) and A319 (B), respectively. The result of the tensile strength test on material B at $250^{\circ}C$ was higher by 30.8MPa compared to material A. On the other hand, elongation was 8.5% higher for material A. At $130{\circ}C$, material B exhibited high fatigue life given high cycle fatigue under high stress, whereas material A showed high fatigue life when stress was lowered. With regard to the low-cycle fatigue result ($250^{\circ}C$) showing higher fatigue life as ductility is increased, material A demonstrated higher fatigue life. Through the observation of the differences in microstructure and the fatigue fracture surface, an attempt to explain the high-temperature fatigue deformation behavior of the materials was made.

  • Ferrite plating enables were grown by ferrite by plating method in solution at low temperature(<10$0^{\circ}C$). This faciltates the fabrication of new ferrite thin film devices using non- heat-resistant materials(plastic, GaAs ect) as substrates. Combining the ferrite plating with sonochemistry, application of power ultrasonic waves to stimulate chemical reactions, the crystallinity and qualities of films were improved. Modifying the reactions cell and plating conditions further improved the film quality.

  • The temperature-dependent tribological properties of brake discs for a train were examined in this study. The discs were produced using heat-resistant alloy steel, which showed different thermal conductivity after the heat treatments. A commercial brake friction material was used to evaluate the friction effectiveness, and the friction tests were carried out using a 1/5 scale dynamometer under various initial braking temperature conditions. The results showed that the tribological property of the disc was strongly affected by the heat treatment schedule. At low temperatures (below $250^{\circ}C$), the friction coefficient increased as a function of disc temperature, indicating that frictional heat increased the adhesion between the disc and pad. In addition, fade was observed at high temperatures (above $250^{\circ}C$); it was pronounced in the case of the disc with low thermal conductivity. The different fade resistances observed in the discs with different heat treatment schedules appear to be influenced by microstructural changes such as carbide redistribution occurring during the heat treatments, which affected the thermal conductivity.

  • New conductor is developed by using high strength nonmagnetic steel(NM) wire as the core of overhead conductor. This conductor is called ACNR overhead conductor(Aluminum Conductor Nonmagnetic Steel Reinforced). Formed by the combination of aluminum alloy wire and high strength nonmagnetic steel wire, it has about the same weight and diameter as conventional ACSR overhead conductor. To enhance properties beneficial in an electrical and mechanical conductor during the process of high strength nonmagnetic steel wire, we made a large number of improvements and modifications in the working process, aluminum cladded method, and other process. ACNR overhead conductor, we successfully developed, has mechanical and electrical properties as good as or even better than conventional galvanized wire. Microstructure of raw material M wire was austenite and then deformed martensite after drawing process. Strength at room temperature is about $180kgf/mm^2\~200kgf/mm^2$. NM wire developed as core of overhead conductor shows heat resistant characteristics higher than that of HC wire used as core of commercial ACSR overhead conductor, Strength loss was not occur at heat resistant test below $600^{\circ}C$. Fatigue strength of vibration fatigue is about $32kgf/mm^2\~35kgf/mm^2$ and that of tension-tension fatigue is $90kgf/mm^2\~120kgf/mm^2$ which is $50\~65\%$ of tensile strength.

  • Hastelloy C-276 composed of Cr, Mo, and Ni is a versatile, corrosion-resistant alloy with numerous industrial applications including its use in nuclear reactors, general chemical plants, and as a superconducting base material. Of especial significance, it can be used as a thin-sheet type whereby lap-joint welding is occasionally necessary. The main welding problems for thin-sheet metals are deformation and burn-through from an excessive heat input. Laser welding can minimize these problems because it has a high energy density and low heat effect on the base material. In this study, the laser-welding characteristics of lap-joint Hastelloy C-276 sheet metal were determined. The criteria of the laser-welding variables were chosen using a heat-conduction analysis, and the optimal welding parameters were selected by experimenting with an Nd:YAG laser.

  • Backfill material of buried electrical transmission cable should dissipate the heat as rapidly as it is generated, or high temperatures will lead thermal runaway. These problems could raise thermal resistance and recude trasmission efficiency. So Backfill material of buried electrical transmission cable should have not only structual safty but good thermal property. So, in this study, we performed thermal resistancy test for various materials such as sand, weathered soil, clay and mixed soil to analyze the thermal characteristics of CLSM(controlled low strength materials) for water content.

  • Cu-matrix sintered brake pads and low-alloy heat-resistant steel are commonly applied to basic brake systems in high-energy moving machines. In this research, we analyzed the tribological characteristics to determine the influence of the air velocity between the disk and pad. At a low brake pressure with airflow, the friction stability was decreased as a result of the lack of tribofilm formation at the disk surface. However, there were no significant changes in the friction coefficient under any of the test conditions. The wear rates of the friction materials were decreased with an increase in the airflow velocity. As a result, the airflow velocity influenced the friction stability, as well as the wear rate of the friction materials and disk, but not the friction coefficient.

  • Cu-matrix-sintered brake pads and heat-resistant low-alloy steel are commonly applied to basic brake systems in high-energy moving machines. We analyzed how the tribological characteristics are influenced by the inertial mass. A high inertial mass decreased the friction coefficient by about 15% compared to a low inertial mass under all velocity conditions. The wear rates of the friction materials increased with the inertial mass. Thus, the inertial mass influences the friction coefficient and wear rate of the friction materials and disk but not the friction stability.

  • Poly(ethylene terephthalate), polyimide(Kapton), and polypropylene surfaces were modified with argon low temperature plasma by RF glow discharge at 240m Torr, 40W to investigate the surface morphological changes due to the plasma treatment using atomic force microscopy(AFM). Analysis of the AFM images and Ra(average roughness) revealed that the plasma treatment resulted in significant ablation on the surfaces. The morphological changes and surface roughness, however, were different depending on material characteristics such as heat stability, presence of amorphous region, swelling phenomenon, and molecular structure of repeating unit. It was assumed that polypropylene due to its tertiary hydrogen was ablated easily compared to poly(ethylene terephthalate), and that polyimide was more resistant to the ablation than PET due to rigid skeleton of imide and stable phenyl ring structure.

  • As a reinforced fabric, asbestos has been utilized as a fire-resistant material as it has a superior flexural stiffness and heat resistance up to $1500^{\circ}C$. However, due to its harmfulness, its use has been prohibited recently and the even the installed asbestos materials are being repaired or supplemented if there is a concern about flying. Asbestos is mainly used for construction panels as a reinforced fabric and coating materials to ensure the fire-resistance of steel frames. Asbestos was used as fire-resistant materials for steel frames until 1991 and then prohibited as Act on Industrial Safety and Health limits the concentration of asbestos in the air. Classified as a designated waste according to Act on Waste Control, asbestos must be buried if there is no possibility of flying (panel-type materials) or cement-solidified and then buried if there is a possibility of flying (spray coating material) In general, it is required that a new waste landfill include a certain landfill facility for designated waste, but in reality there is an absolute storage of landfill facilities for designated waste as they only install facilities of the size required by the regulations. This could result in the 2nd environmental pollution as they cannot process asbestos wastes which will be generated in large volume in the future. This study explores a method that melts asbestos wastes at $700^{\circ}C$ rather than cement-solidifying the waste asbestos from construction sites, especially asbestos-containing spray coating. The study results showed that there was no change in the composition and shape even though asbestos wastes was melted at $1300^{\circ}C$, but there was a change for the specimen which was process in advance for low temperature melting and then melt at $900^{\circ}C$.
