The increase use of natural gas as an energy source has been continuous demand for ever-increasing strength in gas transmission pipeline materials in order to achieve safe and economic transportation of natural gas. In particular, linepipe material for sour gas service primarily needs to have crack resistant property. However, applications of sour linepipes are expanding toward deep water or cold region, which require higher toughness and/or heavier wall thickness as well as higher strength. To improve the crack resistance of linepipe steel in sour environment, low alloy steel are produced by controlled rolling subsequently followed by the accelerated cooling process. This paper summarizes the design concepts for controlling crack resistant property low alloy linepipe steels for sour gas service.
The effects of boron additions in steels have long been recognized as very important, mainly with respect to hardnability of heat treatable steels. The systematics of structure and properties of boron steels will then be illustrated in the context of low-alloy steels with carbon contents raging from 0.05 to 0.25% and boron contents 0-130 ppm. we investigated the effect of the microstructure and mechanical properties with heat treatment condition of the boron-treated(0.0013 ppm) low carbon(0.2 %C) low alloy steel. The specimens were austenitised for 5 and 10, 15 min at $880{\sim}940^{\circ}C$(with/without tempered at 150, 180 and $210^{\circ}C$ for the various periods of time from 60 min to 120 min) After heat treatment, mechanical properties were measured by tensile test and hardness test. For analysis of microstructure, Optical/SEM analysis and XRD were carried out.
Isotope dilution mass spectrometry (IDMS) was applied to the determination of Ni, Cr, Mo in low alloy steel reference materials. The Mo isotope ratio measurement was performed by dynamic reaction cell inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (DRC-ICP/MS) using ammonia as a reaction cell gas. In the case of Ni and Cr measurement, all data were obtained at medium resolution mode (m/${\Delta}m=3000$) of double focusing sector field high resolution inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (HR-ICP/MS). For the method validation of the technique was assessed using the certified reference materials such as NIST SRM 361, NIST SRM 362, NIST SRM 363, NIST SRM 364, NIST SRM 36b. This method was applied to the determination of Ni, Cr and Mo in low alloy steel sample (CCQM-P25) provided by NMIJ for international comparison study.
Prevention of crevice corrosion was studied for STS 304 stainless steel using a Mg-alloy galvanic anode in solutions with various specific resistivity. The crevice corrosion and corrosion protection characteristics of the steel was investigated by the electrochemical polarization and galvanic corrosion tests. Experimental results show that the crevice corrosion of STS 304 stainless steel does not occur in solutions of high specific resistivity, but it occurs in solutions of low specific resistivity like in solutions with resistivities of 30, 60 and $115{\Omega}{\cdot}m$. With decreasing specific resistivity of the solution, the electrode potential of STS 304 stainless steel in the crevice is lowered. The potential of STS 304 stainless steel in the crevice after coupling is cathodically polarized more by decreasing specific resistivity indicating that the crevice corrosion of STS 304 stainless steel is prevented by the Mg-alloy galvanic anode.
The high-strength low-alloy(HSLA) steels have low carbon contents($0.05{\sim}0.25%$ C) in order to produce adequate formability and weldability, and they have manganese contents up to 1.7%. Small quantities of silicon, chromium, nickel, copper, aluminum, molybdenum are used in various combinations. The results contained in this paper can provide the valuable information on the development of $-40^{\circ}C$ low temperature HSLA. Furthermore, the present experimental data will provide important database for casting steel materials of the offshore structure.
The rotation capacities of the plastic hinges located at beam-ends are significantly reduced in traditional steel framed-tube structures (SFTSs) because of the small span-to-depth ratios of the deep beams, leading to the low ductility and energy dissipation capacities of the SFTSs. High-strength steel framed-tube structures with replaceable shear links (HSSFTS-RSLs) are proposed to address this issue. A replaceable shear link is located at the mid-span of a deep spandrel beam to act as a ductile fuse to dissipate the seismic energy in HSSFTS-RSLs. A 2/3-scaled HSSFTS-RSL specimen with a shear link fabricated of high-strength low-alloy Q355 structural steel was created, and a cyclic loading test was performed to study the hysteresis behaviors of this specimen. The test results were compared to the specimens with soft steel shear links in previous studies to investigate the feasibility of using high-strength low-alloy steel for shear links in HSSFTS-RSLs. The effects of link web stiffener spaces on the cyclic performance of the HSSFTS-RSLs with Q355 steel shear links were investigated based on the nonlinear numerical analysis. The test results indicate that the specimen with a Q355 steel shear link exhibited a reliable and stable seismic performance. If the maximum interstory drift of HSSFTS-RSL is designed lower than 2% under earthquakes, the HSSFTS-RSLs with Q355 steel shear links can have similar seismic performance to the structures with soft steel shear links, even though these shear links have similar shear and flexural strength. For the Q355 steel shear links with web height-to-thickness ratios higher than 30.7 in HSSFTS-RSLs, it is suggested that the maximum intermediate web stiffener space is decreased by 15% from the allowable space for the shear link in AISC341-16 due to the analytical results.
Microstructures and tensile properties of low carbon steels, 5083 Al alloy and Ti-6Al-4V alloy fabricated by equal channel angular pressing (ECAP) were examined in order to understand their deformation response associated with a formation of an ultrafine grained (UFG) structure. Room temperature tensile properties of UFG low carbon ferrite/pearlite steels and UFG ferrite/martensite dual phase steel were compared for exploring a feasibility enhancing the strain hardening capability of UFG materials. In addition, low temperature and high strain rate superplasticity of the two grades of the UFG 5083 Al alloy, and Ti-6Al-4V alloy were presented. From the analysis of a series of experiments, it was found that UFG materials exhibited the enhanced mechanical properties compared to coarse grained counterparts.

The purpose of this study is investigating the joint characteristics of advanced high strength steel DP780 and Al5052 alloy sheet in the clinching process. It is difficult to join the advanced high strength steel with light-weight materials like aluminum alloy, because of low formability of DP780. The defects of clinching joint such as necking of the upper sheet, cracks of the lower sheet and no interlocking were occurred by different ductility between advanced high strength steel and aluminum alloy. The clinching conditions should be optimized to interlock without any defects. In this study, the effect of process parameters of clinching process on joinability of advanced high strength steel with Al5052 alloy was investigated by using FE-analysis. From the result of FE-analysis, the clearance between clinching punch and die, die depth and the shape of die cavity mainly affected the joinability of advanced high strength steel with Al5052 alloy.
The objective of this study was to evaluate corrosion resistance of Zn-Al-Mg alloy coated steel in residential water with trace quantities of Cl-. Comparative evaluations were performed using two commercial coated steel products, GI and Galvalume, as reference samples. Examination of corrosion morphology and measurement of weight loss revealed that the Zn-Al-Mg alloy coated steel exhibited higher corrosion resistance than reference samples. This finding suggests that the alloy coated steel possesses long-term corrosion resistance not only in highly Cl- concentrated environments such as seawater, but also in environments with extremely low levels of Cl- found in residential water. The primary factor contributing to the superior corrosion resistance of the Zn-Al-Mg alloy coated steel in residential water is the formation of an inhibiting corrosion product composed primarily of two phases: Zn5(OH)6(CO3)2 and Zn5(OH)8Cl2·H2O. The preferential dissolution of Mg from the corroded coating layer can increase alkalinity, which might enhance the thermodynamical stability of Zn5(OH)6(CO3)2.
