Precast reinforced concrete bridge columns with hollow rectangular section were tested under cyclic lateral load with constant axial force to investigate its seismic performance. After all the precast column segments were erected, longitudinal reinforcement was inserted in the sheath prefabricated in the segments, which were then mortar grouted. Main variables of the test series were column aspect ratio, longitudinal reinforcement ratio, amount of lateral reinforcement, and location of segment joints. The aspect ratios were 4.5 and 2.5, and the longitudinal steel ratios were 1.15% and 3.07%. The amount of lateral reinforcement were 95%, 55%, 50%, and 27% of the minimum amount for full ductility design requirements in the Korean Bridge Design Code. The locations of segment joints in plastic hinge region were 0.5 and 1.0 times of the section depth from the bottom column end. The test results of cracking and failure mode, axial-flexural strength, lateral load-displacement relationship, and displacement ductility are presented. Then, safety of the ductility demand based seismic design in the Korean Bridge Design Code is discussed. The column specimens showed larger ductility than expected, because buckling of longitudinal reinforcing bar was prevented due to confinement developed not only by transverse steel but also by sheath and infilling mortar.

The square tubed-reinforced concrete (TRC) column is a kind of special concrete-filled steel tube (CFST) columns, in which the outer thin-walled steel tube does not pass through the beam-column joint, so that the longitudinal steel reinforcing bars in the RC beam are continuous through the connection zone. However, there is a possible decrease of the axial bearing capacity at the TRC column to RC beam connection due to the discontinuity of the column tube, which is a concern to engineers. 24 connections and 7 square TRC columns were tested under axial compression. The primary parameters considered in the tests are: (1) connection location (corner, exterior and interior); (2) dimensions of RC beam cross section; (3) RC beam type (with or without horizontal haunches); (4) tube type (with or without stiffening ribs). The test results show that all specimens have relatively high load-carrying capacity and satisfactory ductility. With a proper design, the connections exhibit higher axial resistance and better ductility performance than the TRC column. The feasibility of this type of connections is verified.

This paper presents the results of push-out test conducted for the perfobond rib shear connectors welded onto steel-concrete composite deck. Push-out test specimen consists of profiled steel sheeting, perfobond rib, reinforcement, and concrete. To provide longitudinal shear resistance between the profiled sheeting and the concrete, perfobond rib with a number of holes was used. The parameters considered in the design of perfobond rib were the spacing and location of holes, and effect of reinforcing bars placed in the holes. To validate the effectiveness of the proposed system, twelve specimens were fabricated and tested. Although the scope of test was limited in nature, the results of test have shown that the perfobond ribs can be effectively used for shear connection in the steel-concrete composite decks.

In this study, it is investigated the modified modulus of elasticity of the reinforced concrete columns including the longitudinal reinforcing steels as well as the confinement effect of the core concrete due to the transverse reinforced steel through the literature reviews. Equations are derived in order to evaluate the modified modulus of elasticity for the reinforced compressive concrete including the confinement effect. The finite element analysis for the 20 story reinforced concrete building is undertaken as a case study depending on the steel ratio and modulus of elasticity, and the analysis results are discussed.

In this study, lap spliced ultra-high strength reinforced concrete beams were tested and the code criteria for calculating the lap splice length which was affected by the transverse reinforcement and concrete covering performance were reviewed. The main variables for test were set as fiber volume fraction and transverse reinforcing bar arrangement to improve the confining performance of the concrete cover. The change of the confining performance of concrete cover according to the increase in the fiber mixing amount at 1% and 2% volume ratio was examined, and D10 stirrups with a spacing of 100 mm were placed in the lap spliced region. As a result of the test, the specimens confined by the stirrups showed a sudden drop of load bearing capacity with horizontal cracking at the position of tensile longitudinal reinforcement. However, horizontal cracks were not appeared at the location of longitudinal reinforcement for the specimens with steel fiber. And these specimens showed gradual decrease of load bearing capacity after experiencing peak load. In particular, it was found that the strain at the position of the tensile longitudinal reinforcements of the specimens to which the mixing ratio of 2% was applied exceeds the yield strain. As a result of measuring the strain on the concrete surface, it was found that the fiber was more effective in preventing damage to the concrete surface than the stirrups for short lap spliced region.

The concrete deck slab at the continuous span support of the steel box girder bridge is a structure that is combined with the upper flange. It is a structure that can cause tension cracks in the deck slab at the support causing problems such as durability degradation in long span bridges. This is because the tensile stress in the longitudinal direction of the slab exceeds the design tensile strength due to the effects of dead load and live load when applying a long span. Accordingly, it is necessary to control tensile cracking by adding a reinforcing bar in the axial direction to the slab at the support and to introduce additional compressive stress. To solve this problem, a structural system of a steel box girder bridge was proposed that introduces compressive stress as PS steel wire tension in the tensile stress section of the upper slab in the continuous support. The resulting structural performance was compared and verified through the finite element analysis and the steel wire tension test of the actual specimen. By introducing compressive stress that can control the tensile stress and cracking of the slab generated in the negative moment through the tension of the PS steel wire, it is possible to improve structural safety and strengthen durability compared to the existing steel box girder bridge.
This paper investigates the seismic performance of T-shaped PC walls with a new vertical connections and wet cast joint. The load-displacement relationship, strength, ductility, failure mechanism, and deformation capacity of the T-shaped PC walls subjected to cyclic loading are verified. Test parameter is diagonal reinforcement of both flange and web wall panels to transfer shear strength. The longitudinal reinforcing steel bars placed edges of walls yield first and the ultimate deformation is terminated due to premature failure of connections. And diagonal reinforcements for shear transfer in walls are effective to restrain the wall crack. The strength and displacement obtained by the cross section analysis were very similar to the experimental data.
In this study, the behavior of external beam-column joints reinforced by plain and deformed bars with non-seismic reinforcement details is investigated and compared. The beam-column joints represented in this study include a benchmark specimen by seismic details in accordance with ACI 318M-11 requirements and four other deficient specimens. The main defects of the non-seismic beam-column joints included use of plain bar, absence of transverse steel hoops, and the anchorage condition of longitudinal reinforcements. The experimental results indicate that using of plain bars in non-seismic beam-column joints has significantly affected the failure modes. The main failure mode of the non-seismic beam-column joints reinforced by deformed bars was the accumulation of shear cracks in the joint region, while the failure mode of the non-seismic beam-column joints reinforced by plain bars was deep cracks at the joint face and intersection of beam and column and there was only miner diagonal shear cracking at the joint region. In the other way, use of plain bars for reinforcing concrete can cause the behavior of the substructure to be controlled by slip of the beam longitudinal bars. The experimental results show that the ductility of non-seismic beam-column joints reinforced by plain bars has not decreased compared to the beam-column joints reinforced by deformed bars due to lack of mechanical interlock between plain bars and concrete. Also it can be seen a little increase in ductility of substructure due to existence of hooks at the end of the development length of the bars.

For the establishment of rational seismic design code for RC (reinforced concrete) bridge pier, this paper has analyzed the seismic code of RC bridge pier specified in )veil-known codes such as KHBDS (Korea Highway Bridge Design Specification), AASHTO Standard, ATC-32, Eurocode 8, NZS 3101, etc. So as to secure aseismic ductility of RC pier, transverse confinement steel ratios of those codes have been examined together with other design parameters such as strength of concrete and reinforcing steel, axial force ratio, aspect ratio, longitudinal steel ratio, etc. However, there has been arisen a doubt for the validity of those parameters. Thus, the objective of this study is to quantitatively evaluate the validity of design parameter of each code on the experimental seismic ductility for about 80 test specimens. It was concluded from this study that the axial force ratio is a dominant factor for the seismic displacement ductility. Therefore, it Is desirable that the axial force ratio be further taken into account in the corresponding seismic design formula of RC bridge pier in current KHBDS.

The objective of this study is to evaluate the seismic capacity of RC piers with small aspect ratios. Test specimens were selected from the prototype piers among existing national roadway bridges which are expected to fail in shear and/or complex shear-flexural mode. Two groups of full scale RC pier models were constructed with aspect ratios of 2.25 and 2.67. Quasi-static tests have been implemented to investigate the failure behavior of the RC piers in terms of the lap-spliced longitudinal reinforcing steel and the aspect ratio. It is confirmed that regarding its shear-flexural behavior, the pier is very sensitive to the aspect ratio or details. In the case of a test pier with highly lap-spliced longitudinal bars, the bond failure of lap-splice steels was the dominant cause of failure before the occurrence of flexure or shear-flexural failure, despite a slight change in the aspect ratio. Finally, based on the test results and analysis, this paper proposes formulas for the yielding and ultimate displacements of circular reinforced concrete bridge piers without seismic details. These formulas will be useful for the investigation and upgrade of the seismic capacity of bridge piers without seismic details.
