This research presents the experimental and theoretical evaluations on circular steel-fiber-reinforced-concrete (SFRC) columns reinforced by glass-fiber-reinforced-polymer (GFRP) rebar under the axial compressive loading. Test programs were designed to investigate and compare the effect of different parameters on the structural behavior of columns by performing tests. Theses variables included conventional concrete (CC), fiber concrete (FC), steel/GFRP longitudinal rebars, and transversal rebars configurations. A total of 16 specimens were constructed and categorized into four groups in terms of different rebar-concrete configurations, including GFRP-rebar-reinforced-CC columns (GRCC), GFRP-rebar-reinforced-FC columns (GRFC), steel-rebar-reinforced-CC columns (SRCC) and steel-rebar- reinforced-FC columns (SRFC). Experimental observations displayed that failure modes and cracking patterns of four groups of columns were similar, especially in pre-peak branches of load-deflection curves. Although the average ultimate axial load of columns with longitudinal GFRP rebars was obtained by 17.9% less than the average ultimate axial load of columns with longitudinal steel rebars, the average axial ductility index (DI) of them was gained by 10.2% higher than their counterpart columns. Adding steel fibers (SFs) into concrete led to the increases of 7.7% and 6.7% of the axial peak load and the DI of columns than their counterpart columns with CC. The volumetric ratio had greater efficiency on peak loads and DIs of columns than the type of transversal reinforcement. A simple analytical equation was proposed to predict the axial compressive capacity of columns by considering the axial involvement of longitudinal GFRP rebars, volumetric ratio, and steel spiral/hoop rebar. There was a good correlation between test results and predictions of the proposed equation.
The effects of rebar corrosion on the structural behaviour of reinforced concrete structures were discussed based on recent experimental investigation. The load carrying capacity of the deteriorated beams was quantitatively estimated by evaluating the degree of rebar corrosion in terms of the average cross-sectional loss of longitudinal reinforcing bars and bond deterioration between corroded reinforcing bars and concrete.
The purpose of this paper is to provide an experimental and analytical study on the reinforced large diameter pretensioned high strength concrete (R-LDPHC) pile. R-LDPHC pile was reinforced with infilled concrete, longitudinal, and transverse rebar to increase the flexural and shear strength of conventional large diameter PHC (LDPHC) pile without changing dimension of the pile. To evaluate the shear and flexural strength enhancement effects of R-LDPHC piles compared with conventional LDPHC pile, a two-point loading tests were conducted under simple supported conditions. Nonlinear analysis on the basis of the conventional layered sectional approach was also performed to evaluate effects of infilled concrete and longitudinal rebar on the flexural strength of conventional LDPHC pile. Moreover, ultimate strength design method was adopted to estimate the effect of transverse rebar and infilled concrete on the shear strength of a pile. The analytical results were compared with the results of the bending and shear test. Test results showed that the flexural strength and shear strength of R-LDPHC pile were increased by 2.3 times and 3.3 times compared to those of the conventional LDPHC pile, respectively. From the analytical study, it was found that the flexural strength and shear strength of R-LDPHC pile can be predicted by the analytical method by considering rebar and infilled concrete effects, and the average difference of flexural strength between experimental results and calculated result was 10.5% at the ultimate state.
A high-pressure hose includes rebar layers of the synthetic fiber such as nylon or a steel wire to control internal pressure. The hose assembly is manufactured through the swaging process to clamp the hose into the metal fittings. Usually, the hose behavior is affected by the resultant of the longitudinal and circumferential forces produced by the internal pressure. The rebar layers can appear the most ideal rebar effect when they are arranged to the same direction as the resultant force. The braid angle applied in the rebar layers is an important factor in determining ultimate burst pressure and overall hose life. Failure can occur on the contacted parts of a hose with the metal fittings under severe operating conditions such as high pressure and temperature of the inner fluid. In this paper, the mechanical behavior between the hose and the metal fittings during the swaging process and the stress variation characteristics of a high-pressure hose under a constant applied pressure are analyzed with respect to the braid angle of steel wire using the finite element method.

In present Korea Highway Bridge Standards the lap splice of longitudinal bars in a potential plastic hinge region is allowed so that large amount of transverse rebar specified in high seismicity regions Is required to prevent brittle bond failure If the brittle failure effects can be completely removed from the conventional designed piers, the amount of transverse rebar will be reduced drastically. In this study scaled models with solid and hollow rectangular sections were tested to investigate the seismic behavior of RC piers with 50% of lap-spliced longitudinal bars in plastic hinge regions. In the tests the typical flexural failure conducting a ductile behavior were observed in both models. It is shown that the 50% of lap-spliced bars can be considered as a good alternative of seismic detailing for longitudinal bars.

In the present study, the deformation capacity of slender shear walls with thin web was studied. As reported by other researchers, web-crushing and rebar-fracture, developing by inelastic deformation after flexural yielding, were considered as the governing failure modes of walls. To address the effect of the longitudinal elongation on web-crushing and rebar-fracture, the longitudinal elongation was predicted by using truss model analysis. The failure criteria by web-crushing and rebar-fracture were defined as a function of the longitudinal elongation. The proposed method was applied to 17 shear wall specimens with boundary columns, and the prediction results were compared with the test results. The results showed that proposed method predicted the maximum deformations and failure modes of the wall specimens with reasonable precision.

Concrete infill and reinforcement are one of the most well-known strengthening methods of structural elements. This study investigated flexural performance of concrete infill composite PHC pile (ICP pile) reinforced by infill concrete and longitudinal rebars in hollow PHC pile. A total four series of pile specimens were tested by four points bending method under simply supported conditions and investigated bending moment experimentally and analytically. From the test results, it was found that although reinforcement of infilled concrete on the pure bending moment of PHC pile was negligible, reinforcement of PHC pile using infilled concrete and longitudinal rebars increase the maximum bending moment with range from 1.95 to 2.31 times than that of conventional PHC pile. The error of bending moment between experimental results and predicted results by nonlinear sectional analysis on the basis of the conventional layered sectional approach was in the range of -2.54 % to 2.80 %. The axial compression and moment interaction analysis for ICP piles shows more significant strengthening effects of infilled concrete and longitudinal rebars.
In the present study, the deformation capacity of slender shear walls with thin web subject to inelastic deformation after flexural yielding was studied. Web-crushing and rebar-fracture were considered as the governing failure mechanisms of walls. To address the effect of the longitudinal elongation on web-crushing and rebar-fracture, the longitudinal elongation was predicted by using truss model analysis. In this study, the experimental and analytical study were performed on the location of longitudinal cracks in the middle of underground box structures. The location where the longitudinal cracking occurred was investigated that the overlapping joint of the rebar and the section of maximum tensile stress generated. Using the finite element analysis, the strength reduction ratio of the rebar was estimated by lack of overlap joint length. As the result of adequacy investigation for the length of the overlap joint presented in the design criteria, it was analytically proved that the lack of the overlap joint length could be cause the decreasing cross-sectional force and concrete cracking. As the result of this study, the adequacy of the overlapping criterion in the current design criteria was confirmed based on the finite element analysis and actual field case. In the case of overlapping joints installed in inappropriate position, it was considered that a long term crack control would be need to ensure the sufficient safety factor for the designed cross-sectional force.

For old piers constructed when seismic design code had not been developed, lap splices usually exist in plastic hinge region. Corrosion of rebars causes decreasement in cross-sectional area of rebar and deterioration of lap-splice behaviour, thereby reducing the seismic performance of the old piers. In this research, according to these characteristics of old piers, test specimens are designed and manufactured considering rebar corrosion, lap splice, seismic design details, and seismic reinforcement. These effects are investigated through experiments. As a result of these experiment, rebar corrosion as well as lap splice reduces displacement ductility. When seismic design details or steel-plate reinforcement are applied, sufficient displacement ductility is expressed. For non-seismically designed specimens, loosening of the lap splice of transverse rebars caused buckling of longitudinal rebars and crushing of core concrete in plastic hinge region . For seismically designed specimen, area-reducing and untying of transverse rebars due to corrosion of rebars caused buckling of longitudinal rebars and crushing of core concrete.
