  • An experiment was conducted to compare the 1% safranine solution flow depth in radial and longitudinal direction of Prunus sargentii. Longitudinal flow of safranine solution was found higher than radial flow. Body ray parenchyma was found more permeable than marginal ray parenchyma and it was about 1.3 times higher. Intercellular space conducted safranine solution more than ray parenchyma. Vessel was found to be the main avenue for liquid conduction in longitudinal direction. Different anatomical features of ray, vessel and fiber affected the penetration depth of safranine solution. Moreover initial penetration depth was found to be high and thereafter decreased gradually.

  • In this report, we describe the anatomical features of Gmelina arborea Roxb. belong to the genera of Verbenaceae native to Bangladesh and safranine penetration depth in radial and longitudinal directions. The wood of this species was characterized mostly by distinct growth ring boundaries, diffuse-porous, simple perforations, alternate non-vestured intervessel pits, and relatively short vessel elements and medium fibers. Thin to thick walled septate fibers with simple to minutely bordered pits are confined to the radial walls. Tyloses are common. They are paratracheal axial parenchyma vascicnetric and confluent. Rays not higher than 1milimeter are found, and larger rays commonly 4 to 5 seriate are dominantly present, as are multi seriate rays composed of a procumbent ray with 1 row of square or upright cells. Acicular crystals are present in ray cells. Another experiment was taken under consideration to observe the liquid penetration depth in longitudinal and radial directions using safranine. It was found that safranine penetrated easily in longitudinal direction and sapwood was more permeable than heartwood.

  • A study was carried out to observe the 1% aqueous safranine solution flow speed in longitudinal and radial directions of softwood Metasequoia glyptostroboides, diffuse-porous wood Anthocephalus cadamba and ring-porouswood Fraxinus rhynchophylla. In radial direction, ray cells and in longitudinal direction, tracheids, vessel and wood fiber were considered for the measurement of liquid penetration speed at less than 12% moisture contents (MC). The length, lumen diameter, pit diameter, end wall pit diameter and the numbers of end wall pits determined for the flow rate. The liquid flow in the those cells was captured via video and the capillary flow rate in the ones were measured. Vessel in hardwood species and tracheids in softwood was found to facilitate prime role in longitudinal penetration. Anatomical features like the length and diameter, end-wall pit numbers of ray parenchyma were found also responsible fluid flow differences. On the other hand, vessel and fiber structure affected the longitudinal flow of liquids. Therefore, the average liquid penetration depth in longitudinal tracheids of Metasequoia glyptostroboides was found the highest among all cells considered in Anthocephalus cadamba and Fraxinus rhynchophylla In radial direction, ray parenchyma of Metasequoia glyptostroboides was found the highest depth and the one of Fraxinus rhynchophylla was the lowest. The solution was penetrated lowest depth in the wood fiber of Fraxinus rhynchophylla. The large vessel of Fraxinus rhynchophylla was found the lowest depth among the vessels. The solutin was penetrated to the wood fiber of Anthocephalus cadamba higher than the one of Fraxinus rhynchophylla.

  • Partial penetration welding joint refers to the groove weld that applies to the one side welding which does not use steel backing and to both side welding without back gouging, that is, the partial penetration welding joint leaves an unwelded portion at the root of the welding area. In this study, we analyzed the residual stress and fracture on the thick metal plates that introduced the partial penetration welding method. According to the above-mentioned welding method, we could draw a conclusion that longitudinal stress and traverse stress occurred around the welding area are so minimal and do not affect any influence. We also performed the fracture behavior evaluation on the partial penetration multi pass welding with 25.4 mm thick plate by using the J-integral, which finally led us the conclusion that the partial penetration multi-pass welding method is more applicable and effective in handling the root face with less than 6.35 mm.

  • An experiment was conducted to know the essential oil penetration depth in radial and longitudinal direction of Prunus sargentii. Oil penetration depth was found greater than radial flow depth. Vessel conducted oil more than wood fiber. In radial direction, body ray parenchyma was found more permeable than marginal ray parenchyma and it was about 138% times higher. Furthermore penetration depth of oil in intercellular space was greater than ray parenchyma and it was about 250% higher than ray parenchymas. Initial flow speed was found high and then it gradually decreased.

  • The total recovery ratio test on undisturbed clay soil sampling in the field and the finite element method analysis on modified static state of penetration process were conducted for the purpose of deciding the most important factor among the shape factors of thin wall tube. The adhesion between tube wall and soil did not decrease although internal clearance ratio of tube increased within the little change of tube area ratio. The most part of disturbance occurred in the tip of sampling tube during the penetration. The longitudinal displacement was larger than the lateral displacement because soil was confined laterally after being entered into tube, and also the longitudinal displacement was larger in the upper part of the sample tube than in the lower part.

  • This research was performed to investigate the diffusivity of borate rods in radiata pine (Pinus radiata D. Don) conditioned to 40 percent moisture content (MC). The deepest penetration of boron were observed in the longitudinal direction, followed by the radial and the tangential directions. The boron loading on the wood face adjacent to the borate rod tended to increase with diffusion time in all directions. To mathematically quantify boron diffusion, the diffusion coefficient of boron was determined using Boltzmann's transformation by assuming that it was a function of concentration only. The values of the longitudinal diffusion coefficients were between 1.3×10-8 cm2/sec and 9.2×10-8 cm2/sec. The radial diffusion coefficients were between 1.4×10-8 cm2/sec and 9.5×10-8 cm2/sec, and the tangential diffusion coefficients were between 5.2×10-9 cm2/sec and 1.3×10-8 cm2/sec. The differences of diffusion coefficients between the longitudinal direction and the radial direction were slight, although their concentration profiles were markedly different. This indicates that the amount of boron loading on the wood face adjacent the borate rod is one of the most important factor for boron penetration in wood with low MC.

  • Partial penetration welding Joint defines that groove welds without steel backing, welded from on side, and groove weeds welded from both sides but without back gouging, that is. it has an unwelded portion at the root of the weld. In this study we analysed fur residual stress and displacement distribution on partial penetration welding condition of thick plate metal. For 25.4mm thick plate, theoretical residual stress and displacement analysis by finite element method using ABAQUS was carried out and compared with the experimental result using hole-drilling method. In results of the condition of partial penetration, it appeared that longitudinal stress at welding area was a little difference and transverse stress did not have any effect by partial penetration multi-pass welding. From a point of welding distortion in partial penetration multi-pass welding, it seemed to be better to control root face smaller than 6.35mm.
