This article proposes a subject-independent application of brain-computer interfacing (BCI). A 32-channel Electroencephalography (EEG) device is used to measure imagined speech (SI) of four words (sos, stop, medicine, washroom) and one phrase (come-here) across 13 subjects. A deep long short-term memory (LSTM) network has been adopted to recognize the above signals in seven EEG frequency bands individually in nine major regions of the brain. The results show a maximum accuracy of 73.56% and a network prediction time (NPT) of 0.14 s which are superior to other state-of-the-art techniques in the literature. Our analysis reveals that the alpha band can recognize SI better than other EEG frequencies. To reinforce our findings, the above work has been compared by models based on the gated recurrent unit (GRU), convolutional neural network (CNN), and six conventional classifiers. The results show that the LSTM model has 46.86% more average accuracy in the alpha band and 74.54% less average NPT than CNN. The maximum accuracy of GRU was 8.34% less than the LSTM network. Deep networks performed better than traditional classifiers.

In this paper, we introduce a long short-term memory (LSTM)-based fall detection system using TensorFlow that can detect falls occurring in the elderly in daily living. 3-axis accelerometer data are aggregated for fall detection, and then three types of parameter are calculated. 4 types of activity of daily living (ADL) and 3 types of fall situation patterns are classified. The parameterized data applied to LSTM. Learning proceeds until the Loss value becomes 0.5 or less. The results are calculated for each parameter θ, SVM, and GSVM. The best result was GSVM, which showed Sensitivity 98.75%, Specificity 99.68%, and Accuracy 99.28%.
Vibration-based structural health monitoring is used to ensure the safety of structures by installing sensors in structures. The peak picking method, one of the applications of vibration-based structural health monitoring, is a method that analyze the dynamic characteristics of a structure using the peaks of the frequency response function. However, the results may vary depending on the person predicting the peak point; further, the method does not predict the exact peak point in the presence of noise. To overcome the limitations of the existing peak picking methods, this study proposes a new method to automate the modal analysis process by utilizing long short-term memory, a type of recurrent neural network. The method proposed in this study uses the time series data of the frequency response function directly as the input of the LSTM network. In addition, the proposed method improved the accuracy by using the phase as well as amplitude information of the frequency response function. Simulation experiments and lab-scale model experiments are performed to verify the performance of the LSTM network developed in this study. The result reported a modal assurance criterion of 0.8107, and it is expected that the dynamic characteristics of a civil structure can be predicted with high accuracy using data without experts.

In recent decades, increasing research attention has been directed toward predicting the price of stocks in financial markets using deep learning methods. For instance, recurrent neural network (RNN) is known to be competitive for datasets with time-series data. Long short term memory (LSTM) further improves RNN by providing an alternative approach to the gradient loss problem. LSTM has its own advantage in predictive accuracy by retaining memory for a longer time. In this paper, we combine both supervised and unsupervised dimension reduction methods with LSTM to enhance the forecasting performance and refer to this as a dimension reduction based LSTM (DR-LSTM) approach. For a supervised dimension reduction method, we use methods such as sliced inverse regression (SIR), sparse SIR, and kernel SIR. Furthermore, principal component analysis (PCA), sparse PCA, and kernel PCA are used as unsupervised dimension reduction methods. Using datasets of real stock market index (S&P 500, STOXX Europe 600, and KOSPI), we present a comparative study on predictive accuracy between six DR-LSTM methods and time series modeling.

With the increase in cyber attacks, automated IDS using machine learning is being studied. According to recent research, the IDS using the recursive learning model shows high detection performance. However, the simple application of the recursive model may be difficult to reflect the associated session characteristics, as the overlapping session environment may degrade the performance. In this paper, we designed the session management module and applied it to LSTM (Long Short-Term Memory) recursive model. For the experiment, the CSE-CIC-IDS 2018 dataset is used and increased the normal session ratio to reduce the association of mal-session. The results show that the proposed model is able to maintain high detection performance even in the environment where session relevance is difficult to find.
Sea ice, frozen sea water, in the Artic is a primary indicator of global warming. Due to its importance to the climate system, shipping-route navigation, and fisheries, Arctic sea ice prediction has gained increased attention in various disciplines. Recent advances in artificial intelligence (AI), motivated by a desire to develop more autonomous and efficient future predictions, have led to the development of new sea ice prediction models as alternatives to conventional numerical and statistical prediction models. This study aims to evaluate the performance of the two-stream convolutional long-and short-term memory (TS-ConvLSTM) AI model, which is designed for learning both global and local characteristics of the Arctic sea ice changes, for the minimum September Arctic sea ice from 2001 to 2021, and to show the possibility for an operational prediction system. Although the TS-ConvLSTM model generally increased the prediction performance as training data increased, predictability for the marginal ice zone, 5-50% concentration, showed a negative trend due to increasing first-year sea ice and warming. Additionally, a comparison of sea ice extent predicted by the TS-ConvLSTM with the median Sea Ice Outlooks (SIOs) submitted to the Sea Ice Prediction Network has been carried out. Unlike the TS-ConvLSTM, the median SIOs did not show notable improvements as time passed (i.e., the amount of training data increased). Although the TS-ConvLSTM model has shown the potential for the operational sea ice prediction system, learning more spatio-temporal patterns in the difficult-to-predict natural environment for the robust prediction system should be considered in future work.

In this paper, we propose a short-term power forecasting method by applying Long Short Term Memory (LSTM) and Gated Recurrent Unit (GRU) neural network to Internet of Things (IoT) power meter. We analyze performance based on real power consumption data of households. Mean absolute error (MAE), mean absolute percentage error (MAPE), mean percentage error (MPE), mean squared error (MSE), and root mean squared error (RMSE) are used as performance evaluation indexes. The experimental results show that the GRU-based model improves the performance by 4.52% in the MAPE and 5.59% in the MPE compared to the LSTM-based model.
Fluctuations in the price of aquaculture products have recently intensified. In particular, wholesale price fluctuations are adversely affecting consumers. Therefore, there is an emerging need for a study on forecasting the wholesale price of aquaculture products. The present study forecasted the wholesale price of olive flounder Paralichthys olivaceus, a representative farmed fish species in Korea, by constructing multivariate long-short term memory (LSTM) and gated recurrent unit (GRU) models. These deep learning models have recently been proven to be effective for forecasting in various fields. A total of 191 monthly data obtained for 17 variables were used to train and test the models. The results showed that the mean average percent error of LSTM and GRU models were 2.19% and 2.68%, respectively.
This paper presents a novel Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) network architecture for the integration of an Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU) and Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS). The proposed algorithm consists of two independent LSTM networks and the LSTM networks are trained to predict attitudes and velocities from the sequence of IMU measurements and mechanization solutions. In this paper, three GNSS receivers are used to provide Real Time Kinematic (RTK) GNSS attitude and position information of a vehicle, and the information is used as a target output while training the network. The performance of the proposed method was evaluated with both experimental and simulation data using a lowcost IMU and three RTK-GNSS receivers. The test results showed that the proposed LSTM network could improve positioning accuracy by more than 90% compared to the position solutions obtained using a conventional Kalman filter based IMU/GNSS integration for more than 30 seconds of GNSS outages.

In this study, prediction of product sales as they relate to changes in temperature is proposed. This model uses long short-term memory (LSTM), which has shown excellent performance for time series predictions. For verification of the proposed sales prediction model, the sales of short pants, flip-flop sandals, and winter outerwear are predicted based on changes in temperature and time series sales data for clothing products collected from 2015 to 2019 (a total of 1,865 days). The sales predictions using the proposed model show increases in the sale of shorts and flip-flops as the temperature rises (a pattern similar to actual sales), while the sale of winter outerwear increases as the temperature decreases.
