  • In the present study, the prediction methods of the crest settlement after impounding and the maximum internal settlement during dam construction were proposed through the analysis on settlement data at 38 monitored points of 36 Concrete-Faced Rockfill Dams (CFRDs). The results from this analysis provided that the crest settlement and the maximum internal settlement are increased in proportion to the dam height and the void ratio. However, the relationship between internal settlement and dam height for each void-ratio range plotted in semi-logarithmic scale is the nearly same. Also, the prediction of the crest settlement of the CFRD is possible through the maximum internal settlement during dam construction. In addition, it seems that the valley shape highly affects the dense dam body with high construction modulus. The results of this study will provide the useful tool for the design, construction and management of CFRDs.

  • This paper proposes an effective tempo feature extraction method for music information retrieval. The tempo information is modeled by the narrow-band temporal modulation components, which are decomposed into a modulation spectrum via joint frequency analysis. In implementation, the tempo feature is directly extracted from the modified discrete cosine transform coefficients, which is the output of partial MP3(MPEG 1 Layer 3) decoder. Then, different features are extracted from the amplitudes of modulation spectrum and applied to different music information retrieval tasks. The logarithmic scale modulation frequency coefficients are employed in automatic music emotion classification and music genre classification. The classification precision in both systems is improved significantly. The bit vectors derived from adaptive modulation spectrum is used in audio fingerprinting task That is proved to be able to achieve high robustness in this application. The experimental results in these tasks validate the effectiveness of the proposed tempo feature.

  • Self-employment rate is high in Korean labor market, while the income gap within self-employed is also high. Although, there are very few studies that addressed on the income inequality of self-employed. Thus, this study has measured the earnings inequality of self-employed by generalized entropy indices and decomposed inequality factor and trend. The empirical study is based on Korea Welfare Panel Study wave 1~4. The main result from this analysis is summarized in three points. Firstly, earnings inequality of self-employed is severely high and the earnings polarization within self-employed has become more serious in Korea. Secondly, this study provides the evidence that the main factor of earnings inequality of self-employed is the status of self-employment, education level, age group, workplace scale and industry. Thirdly, the contribution of relative changes in the incomes of the status of self-employment is the largest to the inequality trend. In terms of education level, age group and industry, the increase of inequality within group(pure effect) mainly attributes to the rise of earnings inequality of self-employed and the change effect of group composition contributes to deterioration of inequality.

  • A series of experiments were carried out with three native strains of microalgae to measure growth rates, biomass, and lipid productivities. Scenedesmus sp. IMMTCC-6 had better biomass growth rate and higher lipid production. The growth, lipid accumulation, and carbon dioxide ($CO_2$) consumption rate of Scenedesmus sp. IMMTCC-6 were tested under different NaOH concentrations in modified BBM. The algal strain showed the maximum specific growth rate (0.474/day), biomass productivity (110.9 mg $l^{-1}d^{-1}$), and $CO_2$ consumption rate (208.4 mg $l^{-1}d^{-1}$) with an NaOH concentration of 0.005 M on the $8^{th}$ day of cultivation. These values were 2.03-, 6.89-, and 6.88-fold more than the algal cultures grown in control conditions (having no NaOH and $CO_2$). The $CO_2$ fixing efficiency of the microalga with other alternative carbon sources like $Na_2CO_3$ and $NaHCO_3$ was also investigated and compared. The optimized experimental parameters at shake-flask scale were implemented for scaling up the process in a self-engineered photobioreactor. A significant increase in lipid accumulation (14.23% to 31.74%) by the algal strain from the logarithmic to stationary phases was obtained. The algal lipids were mainly composed of $C_{16}/C_{18}$ fatty acids, and are desirable for biodiesel production. The study suggests that microalga Scenedesmus sp. IMMTCC-6 is an efficient strain for biodiesel production and $CO_2$ biofixation using stripping solution of NaOH in a cyclic process.

  • In succession to the previous paper, the present studies were directed to determine the sterilizing valves ($F_0$) of the thermal processes for the canned smoked oyster in oil and the canned boiled oyster in brine. The heat penetration tests were carried out under the condition of industrial scale at the tannery of the Taiyang Silup Company, Pusan, Korea. The test cans were placed in the middle layer of the crate in which the same canned products were loaded with, and the test cans were arranged to the front, the middle and the rear in the retort. The heat penetration was tested three times with three cans at a time for each canned product. The heat penetration curve of the canned smoked oyster in oil shelved a simple logarimicth heating curve while that of the canned boiled oyster in brine showed a broken logarithmic heating curve. The calculated $F_0$ value for canned smoked oyster in oil packed into No. 3B square can was 14.58 and the canned boiled oyster in brine packed into No.7 fruit can was 14. 78. On the basis of the heat penetration data obtained. the nomographs representing the relationship between $F_0$ values and B values (process time including $42\%$ of come-up time) for the canned oyster products were constructed.

  • We identified a competition network which has never been studied before and investigated the relationship between centrality of participants in singing competition and their winning percentage within the competition network. We collected competition data from 'Immortal Songs: Singing the Legend', which is a Korean television music competition program, and constructed a competition network. We calculated centrality and winning percentage and analyzed their relationship using correlation analysis, regression analysis, and visualization. There are four main findings in this research. First, a competition network is a scale-free network whose degree distribution follows a power law. Second, there is a logarithmic relationship between the count of competition and closeness. Third, winning percentage converges to approximately 60% for players who have participated in more than 20 competitions. Lastly, a strength of opponents affects approximately 23% of winning percentage for players with less than 20 competitions. The academic significance of this study is that we pioneered the definition of the competition network and applied social network analysis method. Another significant contribution of this paper is that we found explicit patterns between the centrality and winning percentage, suggesting ways to improve social relationship in competition network and to increase winning percentage.

  • A validation of a 3D CFD model for predicting local subcooling of moderator in the vicinity of calandria tubes in a CANDU reactor is performed. The small scale moderator experiments performed at Sheridan Park Experimental Laboratory(SPEL) in Ontario, Canada[1] is used for the validation. Also a comparison is made between previous CFD analyses based on 2DMOTH and PHOENICS, and the current model analysis for the same SPEL experiment. For the current model, a set of grid structures for the same geometry as the experimental test section is generated and the momentum, heat and continuity equations are solved by CFX-4.3, a CFD code developed by AEA technology. The matrix of calandria tubes is simplified by the porous media approach. The standard $k-\varepsilon$ turbulence model associated with logarithmic wall treatment and SIMPLEC algorithm on the body fitted grid are used and buoyancy effects are accounted for by the Boussinesq approximation. For the test conditions simulated in this study, the flow pattern identified is a buoyancy-dominated flow, which is generated by the interaction between the dominant buoyancy force by heating and inertial momentum forces by the inlet jets. As a result, the current CFD moderator analysis model predicts the moderator temperature reasonably, and the maximum error against the experimental data is kept at less than $2.0^{\circ}C$ over the whole domain. The simulated velocity field matches with the visualization of SPEL experiments quite well.

  • In order to investigate the characteristics of pressure drainage for geotextile, small-scale model tests were carried out for the horizontal and vertical geotextile drain to accelerate consolidation of foundation under embankment for the purpose of foundation reinforcement. According to the result of this study, the accumulative drainage discharge is found to increase as compressive stress of geotextile increases with logarithmic function. The drainage discharge under each step of compressive stress linearly increases with the increase of hydraulic head and its increasing rate is smaller when the compressive stress is higher. The drainage discharge shows to be greater when the number of geoteztile layers is more and the foundation material is finer. The relationship between transmissivity of geogextile and drainage discharge has positive correlation and the rate of increase is appeared to be the same regardless of foundation material and hydraulic head. And it proves that the drainage capacity of geotextile drain is determined by the transmissivity of geoteztile.

  • Objectives : Functional dyspepsia (FD) is one of the most common gastrointestinal diseases. Nevertheless, there are many unknown mechanisms of autonomic functioning in FD patients. This study was designed to investigate the relationship between FD and biosignals from heart rate variability (HRV) and Yangdorak diagnosis. Methods : 32 patients (22 female, 10 male; mean age 40) and 32 healthy volunteers (21 female, 11 malemean; age 38) participated in this study. First gastrointestinal symptoms rating scale (GSRS) was assessed by questionnaires in both groups to evaluate the types of gastrointestinal symptoms. Second, HRV and Yangdorak diagnosis were measured in both groups. Results : 1. The FD group in this study mainly had the complaint of 'bloating' symptoms. 2. There was statistically no significant difference between Yangdorak (total average and 24 acupoints) and HRV values except logarithmic low-frequency band (lnLF) and total power (TP) in frequency domain. 3. There was statistically no significant relationship between HRV and Yangdorak in either group. However, most Yangdorak values were positively related with some HRV values (low-frequency, low-frequency/high-frequency ratio and high-frequency, etc) in the control group. Conclusions : FD patients had relatively lesser sympathetic domain than healthy subjects, indicated by decreased lnLF and TP. Particularly, there were positive relationships and significant differences between Yangdorak and HRV in young healthy subjects. This suggests that biosignals from HRV may be a useful method that can differentiate FD from healthy state in those of young age.

  • Compaction is known to critically affect pavement performance. Due to its importance, a theoretical modelling of compacted density in the term of number of roller coverages is attempted by assuming compaction process essentially identical to pavement rutting. Excellent data fittings by the developed equation may prove the validation of assumptions made as well as justification of its use. According to the derived equation, a plot of density difference with respect to number of roller coverages in the logarithmic scale Produces a linear relationship. However, this linearity is turned out to be deviated by cooling effect, change of amplitude and frequency. Investigation of these three factors proposes a new generalized compaction density equation, which shows a promising future. By applying this general formula, the equations for the number of roller coverages required and the final compaction density obtained for a particular compaction project is derived first time in compaction research.
