  • This study was carried out to investigate the effects of the Inside end-taping (Inside-ET) and Outside end-taping (Outside-ET) treatments on prevention of drying defects during radiofrequency/vacuum (RF/V) drying domestic yellow poplar log cross section with size of 20~75 mm in thickness and 120~470 mm in diameter. The treatments of Inside-ET and Outside-ET were quite effective for producing sound log cross sections with thinner than 33 mm and smaller than 270 mm in diameter. Even the 60 mm- and 75 mm-thick log cross sections, if the diameter was smaller than 30 cm, it might expect preventing formation of border checks by appropriate end-taping treatments. The positions of the observed border checks differed in diameter ranging at a relative radius about 0.50~0.63 diameter, and it was estimated that it was necessary to select the border position of end-taping treatment properly according to the diameter of log cross sections. It was observed that the radius of 0.3 diameter was the critical location for pretreatment for preventing formation of border checks in the log cross section with middle diameter. There were severe border checks and V-shaped cracks in the log cross section with large diameter. This was because of the severe variation of moisture content along radial direction of natural characteristic of domestic yellow poplar.

  • This study was carried out to provide the so-called circumferential slicing method for investigating radial distributions of the tangential strains and of moisture contents within the log cross section (LC) of Kalopanax pictus during indoor drying it. While the heartwood showed an almost uniform moisture content distribution in the range of about 50~55% in case of the green wood, it has gradually decreased toward the outer side, showing about 19% of moisture content difference from the innermost slice. Although the moisture gradient along the radial direction has gradually become gentle as drying progresses, the sapwood of the outer side represented the moisture contents below the fiber saturation point after 24 hours of drying while the heartwood in the inner part showed the moisture contents higher than the fiber saturation point. The pith side was laid under the tensile stress after 24 hours of drying, and then gradually decreasing toward the bark side, and showed the distribution being switched again to the tensile stress on the bark side. As the drying has progressed, this trend got more intensified, and finally showed the U-shaped distribution model after 48 hours of drying. The circumferential slice test is considered to be suitable in quantitatively determining the tangential strains and moisture content within a LC.

  • This study was carried out to investigate a radial distribution of moisture contents(MCs) within a log cross section(LC) during oven-drying of circumferential slices cut from some of domestic hardwoods LCs. For zelkova, the slices from sapwood and from transition part already reached to below hygroscopic range at 30% in average MC, whereas the innermost slice represented about 40% MC. A moisture gradient between the innermost slice and the adjacent slice from a cherry LC became severer with drying times. For castor aralia, the green MC for heartwood slices was approximately 23% higher than that for sapwood slices, and the similar moisture gradient still lasted until average 15% MC during oven-drying. For Chinese mahogany, the MCs of the mixed slices and the innermost slice were lower than those of the slices cut from the other parts during all over drying stage.

  • The components with the circular cross section have the symmetric combination parts for rotating balance and the crack emanates from the symmetric combination parts. The symmetric cracks from symmetric combination parts make a decrease in the component fatigue life more than single crack. In this study, to estimate the behavior of symmetric cracks, the fatigue test was performed using rotary bending tester on the specimen with a symmetric defects in circular cross section. The material used in this study is Ni-Cr-Mo steel alloy. Under the same stress, the result from the rotary bending fatigue test turned out that the symmetric cracks made a decrease in the fatigue life by 35% more than single crack and the relation between log a and cycle ratio $N/N_f$ obtained linearly.

  • Nail withdrawal tests were conducted on clear wood of domestic small diameter logs. Nails were driven into the cross and longitudinal sections of each specimen, then nail withdrawal tests were performed. Nail withdrawal loads are strongly dependent on the direction of nail positions. The average load values for the nail withdrawal both in cross section and longitudinal section are higher in high specific gravity (SG) wood of sawtooth oak (Quercus acutissima Carr.) than those in low SG wood of Korean red pine (Pinus densiflora Sieb. et Zucc.) and pitch pine (Pinus rigida Mill.). The average ratio of the nail withdrawal loads for side-grain and end-grain are higher in the low SG wood than that in the high SG of wood. Both linear and non-linear regression analyses were conducted on nail withdrawal load with SG, good correlations were obtained between nail withdrawal load and SG.

  • Log cross sections of yellow poplar were dried in a radio frequency vacuum (RFV) dryer under alternating vacuum and release (AVR) process. The average moisture content (MC), temperature and vapor pressure at the volumetric center were monitored as functions of time. Three different log thicknesses (33, 60 and 75mm) were tested. The results show that the AVR process caused an increase in the drying rate when the moisture content was above fiber saturation point (FSP, about 30% MC) but that it had an inverse effect on the drying rate when the MC was below FSP. The effect of the AVR process on the drying rate decreased, and the severity of heart checks increased, with the increase in the thickness of the specimens.

  • This study was focused on acoustic scattering characteristics of jack mackerel (Trachurus japonicus) at frequency 38, 70, and 120 kHz by Kirchhoff-ray mode (KRM) model. The body length (BL) of 16 individuals ranged in 12.2~22.0 cm ($mean{\pm}S.D.$: $17.8{\pm}3.2cm$) and the swimbladder length ranged in 4.2~8.6 cm ($mean{\pm}S.D.$: $6.6{\pm}1.6cm$) and the swimbladder cross section ranged in $1.7{\sim}6.6cm^2$ ($mean{\pm}S.D.$: $3.8{\pm}1.6cm^2$). This result shows that results correlate well between the BL and the length and cross section of swimbladder. The swimbladder angle ranged in $7{\sim}12^{\circ}$ and the maximum TS values ranged in $-16{\sim}-5^{\circ}$ at tilt angle. The averaged TS-to-BL relationship were $TS_{38kHz}=20{\log}_{10}BL-65.33$ ($R^2=0.66$), $TS_{70kHz}=20{\log}_{10}BL-65.90$ ($R^2=0.67$), and $TS_{120kHz}=20{\log}_{10}BL-66.65$ ($R^2=0.65$). These results can be used fundamental data in order to estimate distribution and biomass of jack mackerel by using hydro-acoustic method.

  • In this study, the gas permeability, sound absorption coefficient, and sound transmission loss of the Paulownia tomentosa wood were estimated using capillary flow porometry, transfer function method, and transfer matrix method, respectively. The longitudinal specific permeability constant of the Paulownia tomentosa wood with a thickness of 20 mm was 0.254 for the control sample and 0.279, 0.314, and 0.452 after being subjected to heat treatments at $100^{\circ}C$, $160^{\circ}C$, and $200^{\circ}C$, respectively. The gas permeability was observed to be slightly increased by the heat treatment. The mean sound absorption coefficients of 20-mm thick Paulownia tomentosa log cross-section for the control sample and after being subjected to heat treatments at $100^{\circ}C$, $160^{\circ}C$, and $200^{\circ}C$ were 0.101, 0.109, 0.096 and 0.106, respectively. Further, the noise reduction coefficients of 20-mm thick Paulownia tomentosa log cross-section of the control sample and after being subjected to heat treatment at temperatures of $100^{\circ}C$, $160^{\circ}C$, and $200^{\circ}C$ were 0.060, 0.067, 0.062 and 0.071, respectively. The mean of sound transmission loss of the 20-mm thick Paulownia tomentosa log cross-section was approximately 36.93 dB. Furthermore, the gas permeability and sound absorption coefficient of the heat-treated Paulownia tomentosa discs slightly increased depending on the heat treatment temperature; however, the rate of increase was insignificant.

  • A knowledge of in situ stress state is important to design various engineering structures such as dams, tunnels and so on. There are about three wellknown indicators that is, borehole will breakouts, hydraulic fracturing, ellipsoidal cross section of borehole that have been attributed to the state of stress in the vicinity of borehole. Fortunately, Televiewer traveltime image can be used as a caliper log with 144 or 288 arms, which allows to determine the borehole shape. Televiewer amplitude image will give detailed information about the distribution and character of breakouts and hydraulic fracturing as well. For investigation purposes, a series of boreholes(total 195 boreholes: 12.239m) that have been logged all over the country during past 10 years are analyzed. The primary objective of this paper are to examnine the ability of a Televiewer to determine the shape of borehole, to present data inferred by stress indicators, to indicate their possible relationship with the anisotropic horizontal stresses. It is shown that in most cases the fracture orientation statistically estimated from observed fractures denotes an excellent correlation with the orientations inferred by stress indicators. Many intervals of breakouts are terminated at the intersection of oblique fracture with the borehole. The results from Televiewer data are further compared with those of hydraulic fracturing techniques.

  • The study was performed to obtain basic data for high quality timber production and efficient utilization of woods by investigating the effects of thinning on timber quality of domestic Korean pine(Pinus koraiensis Sieb. et Zucc.) planted. The results of this study were summarized as follows ; Comparing the appearance of knot per one meter on log surface, the heavy thinned trees contained less knots than non-thinned ones. And the ratio of dead knots was decreased in heavy thinned trees compared with the non-thinned ones, but the knot size was increased. The inclination angle of dead knot is larger than that of live knot. The crooked logs in heavy thinning plot appeared less than those in non-thinning plot. In heavy thinning plot, the log circle percentage of cross section and the ratio of clear lumber were increased, compared with in non-thinning one. The grade of log was the highest in heavy thinning plot.
