  • The objective of this work is the air quality modeling according to the scenarios of emission on complex terrain. The prognostic meteorological fields and air quality field over complex areas of Seoul, Korea are generated by the PSU/NCAR mesoscale model (MM5) and the Third Generation Community Multi-scale Air Quality Modeling System (Models - 3/CMAQ), respectively. The emission source was driven from the Clean Air Policy Support System of the Korea National institute of Environmental Research (CAPSS), which is a 1 km x 1 km grid in South Korea during 2003. In comparison of air quality fields, the simulated averaged $PM_{10},\;NO_2,\;and\;O_3$ concentration on complex terrain in control case were decreased as compared with base case. Particularly $PM_{10}$ revealed most substantial localized differences by $(18{\sim}24{\mu}g/m^3)$. The reduction rate of $PM_{10},\;NO_2,\;and\;O_3$ is respectively 18.88, 13.34 and 4.17%.

  • Objective : Intracavitary injection of beta-emitting radiation source for control of cystic tumors has been tried with a benefit of localized internal radiation. The authors treated cystic brain tumor patients with Holmium-166-chitosan complex (Ho-166-chico), composed of a beta-emitting radionuclide Holmium-166 and biodegradable chit polymer, and evaluated the safety and effective measurement for response. Methods : Twenty-two patients with recurrent cystic brain tumor and/or located in a deep or eloquent area were enrolled in this pilot study. The cyst volume and wall thickness were determined on CT or MRI to assess radiological response. The activity of Ho-166-chico injected via Ommaya reservoir was prescribed to be 10-25 Gy to the cyst wall in a depth of 4 mm. Results : There was neither complications related to systemic absorption nor leakage of Ho-166-chico in all 22 patients. But, two cases of oculomotor paresis were observed in patients with recurrent craniopharyngioma. Radiological response was seen in 14 of 20 available follow-up images (70%). Seven patients of 'evident' radiological response experienced more than 25% decrease of both cyst volume and wall thickness. Another 7 patients with 'suggestive' response showed decrease of cyst volume without definitive change of the wall thickness or vice versa. All patients with benign tumors or low grade gliomas experienced symptomatic improvement. Conclusion : Ho-166-chico intracavitary radiation therapy for cystic tumor is a safe method of palliation without serious complications. The determination of both minimal effective dosage and time interval of repeated injection through phase 1 trial could improve the results in the future.

  • The use of renewable energy sources is becoming increasingly necessary to minimize the problems derived from the global warming impacts caused by the utilization of fossil fuels as well as their limited supply and reservoir. Also, localized heavy rain has occurred in many areas. As a result, suspended wood waste is being inflow into the dam and the problem of waste disposal has occurred. It is a unique renewable and alternative source for the production of energy. The experiment using wood waste (dry weight 25.0g) was conducted for extraction sugars such as xylose, lactose and glucose. For the sugar extraction from wood waste, hydrolysis experiment using wood waste was conducted by two steps. First step was reacted with 72% sulfuric acid (24.0N and 37.5 ml) for 1hr at $30^{\circ}C$ and second step was reacted at $105^{\circ}C$ for one hour after adding 2.45times of hot water. Extracted sugar was used in the experiment of sugar consumption to estimate feasibility of ethanol production using yeast(P. Stipitis and S cerevisiae). As a result, sugar extracted from wood waste was effective consumed by yeast(P. Stipitis and S cerevisiae). The consumption rate by yeast was S. cerevisiae was faster than that of P. stipitis. It can be confirmed that resource as ethanol production using wood waste was available.

  • The acoustic emission(AE) behavior of reinforced concrete slab under flexural loading was investigated to assess the integrity. This study was aimed at identifying the characteristics of AE response associated with damage development. By applying cyclic loading in various load steps, it was able to differentiate each AE source such as distributed micro crack initiation, friction, flexural crack and localized diagonal tension crack. The secondary peak and the change of AE hit rate gave valuable criteria fur assessment. From the analysis of the felicity ratio, furthermore, it was shown that this values can be used for evaluating the degree of concrete damage. Based on the experimental results, this approach for practical AE application may provide a promising method for estimating the level of damage and distress in concrete structures.

  • Truck traffic accounts for a substantial fraction of the traffic stream in many regions and is often the source of localized traffic congestion, potential parking and safety problems. Truck trips tend to be ignored or treated superficially in travel demand models. It reduces the effectiveness and accuracy of travel demand forecasting and may result in misguided transportation policy and project decisions. This paper presents the development of speed-flow relationships with truck impacts based on CORSIM simulation results in order to enhance travel demand model by incorporating truck trips. The traditional BPR(Bureau of Public Road) function representing the speed-flow relationships for roadway facilities is modified to specifically include the impacts of truck traffics. A number of new speed-flow functions have been developed based on CORSIM simulation results for freeways and urban arterials.

  • Because of its anatomical location and function, the costotransverse (CTRV) joint can be a source of thoracic back pain. In this retrospective observational study, we evaluated the clinical effectiveness of the CTRV joint injection in thoracic back pain patients with suspected CTRV joint problems. We enrolled 20 thoracic back pain patients with localized tenderness that was provoked by the application of pressure on the affected CTRV joints. We injected it with 0.5 ml of a ropivacaine and triamcinolone mixture at each level. The mean pre-injection pain score decreased by 37.9% ($7.2{\pm}1.5$ to $4.5{\pm}1.7$, P < 0.001) two weeks after CTRV joint injection. In addition, 70% of patients reported an excellent or good level of satisfaction. We demonstrated that an ultrasound-guided injection of the CTRV joint reduced patients' pain scores and led to a high level of satisfaction at short-term follow-ups in patients with suspected CTRV joint problems.

  • As a technique for removing cancerous tumors from normal tissue, radio-frequency electromagnetic waves were employed to heating target cells up to the critical temperature, which kills the cancerous cells. However, its use in treating tumors in soft organs is limited by inconvenient factors, which are use of high-currents and long time operation. In this work, the feasibility of the localized heating by inserting four conducting electrodes with tiny direct current is investigated. The heat source is resulting from the electric field as known as resistive heating. We have investigated the temperature distribution as a function of applying DC voltages ranging from 10 V to 30 V with 10 V step. From the simulation results, the mushroom-like lesion shape by applying 20 V is generated by four electrodes within a few minutes, that is proper to the clinical application.

  • Five different types of catalases from photosynthetic bacterium Rhodospirillum rubrum S1 grown aerobically in the dark were found in this study, and designated Catl (350 kDa), Cat2 (323 kDa), Cat3 (266 kDa), Cat4 (246 kDa), and Cat5 (238 kDa). Analysis of native PAGE revealed that Cat2, Cat3, and Cat4 were also produced in the cells anaerobically grown in the light. It is notable that only Cat2 was expressed much more strongly in response to the anaerobic condition. Enzyme activity staining demonstrated that Cat3 and Cat4 had bifunctional catalase-peroxidase activities, while Catl, Cat2, and Cat5 were typical monofunctional catalases. S1 cells grown aerobically in the presence of malate as the sole source of carbon exhibited an apparent catalase Km value of 10 mM and a Vmax of about 705 U/mg protein at late stationary growth phase. The catalase activity of Sl cells grown in the anaerobic environment exhibited a much lower Vmax of about 109 U/mg protein at late logarithmic growth phase. The catalytic activity was stable in the broad range of temperatures (30$\^{C}$-60$\^{C}$), and pH (6.0-10.0). R. rubrum S1 was much more resistant to H$_2$O$_2$in the stationary growth phase than in the exponential growth phase regardless of growth conditions. Cells of stationary growth phase treated with 15 mM H$_2$O$_2$for 1 h showed 3-fold higher catalase activities than the untreated cells. In addition, L-glutamate induced an 80-fold increase in total catalase activity of R. rubrum S1 compared with magic acid. Through fraction analyses of S1 cells, Cat2, Cat3, Cat4 and Cat5 were found in both cytoplasm and periplasm, while Catl was localized only in the cytoplasm.

  • Field emission behaviors from diamond-like carbon films were investigated. The films were deposited on n-type Si wafer by ion beam sputtering method using 3 cm Kaufman type ion source. Regardless of the film thicknesses and atomic bond structure, the emission current was much enhanced by electrical breakdown between anode and the film surface. The effective work function was estimated to be about 0.1 eV. In order to identify the emission site, tungsten tip was scanned the damaged region damaged region but localized to a specific site. Analysis using Auger electron spectroscopy and SEM shows that SiC compound was not a sufficient condition for the electron emission. This result showed that the enhanced emission was mainly due to the changes in the chemical bond of the damaged region rather than the enhanced electric field caused by the morphological change.

  • We developed a 37-channel magnetoencephalogram (MEG) measurement system based on low-noise superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID) magnetometets, and operated the system to measure MEG signals. By using double relaxation oscillation SQUIDs with high flux-4o-voltage transfers, the SQUID outputs could be measured directly by room temperature preamplifiers and compact readout circuits were used for SQUID operation. The average field noise level of the magnetometers is about 3 fT/√Hz in the white region, low enough for MEG measurements when operated inside a magnetically shielded room. The 37 magnetometers were distributed on a hemispherical surface haying a radius of 125 mm. In addition to the 37 sensing channels. 11 reference channels were installed to pickup external noise and to form software gradiometers. A low-noise liquid helium dewar was fabricated with a liquid capacity of 30 L and boil-off rate of 4 L/d. The signal processing software consists of digital filtering, software gradiometer, isofield mapping and source localization. By using the developed system, we measured auditory-evoked fields and localized the current dipoles, demonstrating the effectiveness of the system.
