This paper investigated experimentally the performance of cooling systems using thermoelectric and piezoelectric modules for local heating and temperature control, such as a handheld electronic devices. The temperature distribution of the cooling region using thermoelectric modules was measured when the piezoelectric module was and was not with a frequency of 80Hz and 110Hz. The coefficients of performance were also calculated by the temperature results, and the thermo-flow phenomena in the cold region was visualized under the same conditions. The results of the temperature distribution measurements and the coefficient of performance showed that the cooling performance of the cooling system using thermoelectric modules can be improved by operating the piezoelectric module. In addition, when the piezoelectric module was operated based on the result of visualization in the cold region, which was formed by thermoelectric modules, the performance thermoelectric cooling was improved by the thermo-flow formed in the entire cold region as the forced convection of vibration was generated on the local cold region by the piezoelectric module.

Climate is generally accepted as one of the major determinants of plants distribution. Plants are sensitive to bioclimates, and local variations of climate determine habitats of plants. The purpose of this paper is to identify the factors affecting the distribution of narrow-range plants in South Korea using National Survey of Natural Environment data. We developed species distribution models for 6 plant species using climate, topographic and soil factors. All 6 plants were most sensitive to climatic factors but less other factors at national scale. Meliosma myriantha, Stewartia koreana and Eurya japonica, distributed at southern and coast region in Korea, were most sensitive to precipitation and temperature. Meliosma myriantha was mostly effected by annual precipitation and precipitation of driest quarter, Stewartia koreana was effected by annual precipitation and elevation, and Eurya japonica was affected by temperature seasonality and precipitation of driest quarter. On the other hand, Spiraea salicifolia, Rhododendron micranthum and Acer tegmentosum, distributed at central and northern inland in Korea, were most sensitive to temperature and elevation. Spiraea salicifolia was affected by mean temperature of coldest quarter and annual mean temperature, Rhododendron micranthum and Acer tegmentosum were affected by mean temperature of warmest quarter and elevation. We can apply this result to future plant habitat distribution under climate change.

In this study, local velocity distribution of cooling air in a heat exchanger used in an air compressor for a railway car was measured and heat transfer characteristics of the heat exchanger were analyzed. First, heat transfer coefficient and fin performance of the cooling air side were predicted and was checked if the fin of the heat exchanger was effectively used. Distribution of air flow rate at high temperature side was predicted through pipe network analysis and heat resistance at high temperature and low temperature side were predicted and compared. Spatial distribution of temperature in the interior and surface of the square channel constituting high-temperature side was predicted and appropriateness of the size of the heat exchanger was examined. As a result of the analysis, the present size of the heat exchanger could be reduced and it could be effective to promote heat transfer inside the heat exchanger rather than outside to improve performance of the heat exchanger.
An experimental study was performed to confirm the effect of the changing combustor pressure(-30~30 kpa), combustion characteristics were investigated by measuring the local chemiluminescence intensity, the local temperature distribution and emission. In order to investigate combustion ones, the combustor pressure index($P^*$) was controlled in the range of 0.7~1.3 for each equivalence ratio in the present combustion system, where $P^*$ is defined as the ratio of absolute pressure to atmospheric one. The local mean temperature showed the uniform distributions for lower pressure index, which increased with increasing equivalence ratio. The mean $OH^*$ chemiluminescence intensity, showed high level for lower pressure index for ${\Phi}{\get}1.0$ conditions. EINOx decreased with decreasing pressure index for overall equivalence ratio conditions.

The unsteady conjugate forced convection-conduction heat transfer from a plate fin is numerically studied. The external forced flow is steady but the temperature of the fin base is an exponential change with time. Therefore, the unsteady energy equations of the fluid and the fin are solved simultaneously under the conditions of equality in heat flux and temperature at the fluid-fin interface at every instant of time. Numerical results are given for various quantities of interest including the local heat transfer coefficient, the local heat flux, the total heat transfer rate and the temperature distribution of fin under the effects of the convection-conduction parameter and the ratio of thermal diffusivities. The results of the present numerical solution have been compared with those of the conventional fin theory.
Most of the pollutants from passenger cars are emitted during the cold-transient phase of the FTP-75 test. In order to reduce the exhaust emissions during the cold-transient period, it is essential to warm up the catalyst as fast as possible after the engine starts, and the Unburned Exhaust Gas Ignition (UEGI) technology was developed through our previous studies to help close-coupled catalytic converters (CCC) reach the light-off temperature within a few seconds after cold-start. The UEGI system operates by igniting the unburned exhaust mixture by glow plugs installed upstream of the catalyst. The flame generates a high amount of heat, and if the heat is concentrated on a specific area of monolith surface, then thermal crack or failure of the monolith could occur. Therefore, it is very important to monitor the temperature distribution in the CCC during the UEGI operation, so the local temperatures in the monolith were measured using thermocouples. Experimental results showed that the temperature of CCC rises faster with the UEGI technology, and the CCC reaches the light-off temperature earlier than the baseline case. Under the conditions tested, the light-off time of the baseline case was 62 seconds, compared with 33 seconds for the UEGI case. The peak temperature is well under the thermal melting condition, and temperature distribution is not so severe as to consider thermal stress. It is noted that the UEGI technology is an effective method to warm up the catalyst with a small amount of thermal stress during the cold start period.
The diffusion characteristics of the smoke by effect of an ascending air movement in a local part of the room where heat generated was studied. How the smoke move in the limited parts of the room at which heat generated was studied through 3 cases altering locations of inlet and outlet of ventilated air and heat generated by CFD(Computational Fluids Dynamics) method. It was found that 1. Similar distribution of air velocity, air temperature and smoke concentration appeared in the case of upper left inlet and lower right outlet and the case of lower inlet and upper right outlet. 2. Distribution of temperature and smoke concentration was 0∼0.3, 0.06∼0.14 in the case of lower left inlet and upper right outlet. 3. the location of heat generation did not influence on the temperature distribution, but influence on the distribution of smoke concentration.
Precast roofing systems employing prestressed elements often serve as smart structural solutions for the construction of industrial buildings. The precast concrete elements usually employed are highly engineered, and often consist in thin-walled members, characterised by a complex behaviour in fire. The present study was carried out after a fire event damaged a precast industrial building made with prestressed beam and roof elements, and non-prestressed curved barrel vault elements interposed in between the spaced roof elements. As a consequence of the exposure to the fire, the main elements were found standing, although some locally damaged and distorted, and the local collapse of few curved barrel vault elements was observed in one edge row only. In order to understand and interpret the observed structural performance of the roof system under fire, a full fire safety engineering process was carried out according to the following steps: (a) realistic temperature-time curves acting on the structural elements were simulated through computational fluid dynamics, (b) temperature distribution within the concrete elements was obtained with non-linear thermal analysis in variable regime, (c) strength and deformation of the concrete elements were checked with non-linear thermal-mechanical analysis. The analysis of the results allowed to identify the causes of the local collapses occurred, attributable to the distortion caused by temperature to the elements causing loss of support in early fire stage rather than to the material strength reduction due to the progressive exposure of the elements to fire. Finally, practical hints are provided to avoid such a phenomenon to occur when designing similar structures.

When relaxation time will be distributed, TSC observed in the experimental procedure was analysed by using a potential model having two equilibrium positions and equations of dielectric properties was derived. Calculation of distribution was made by matrix method and compared/confirmed values obtained by TSC and alternating current which have a correspondence with each other. In this measurement, distribution of activation energy and relaxation time was determined by TSC peak at around 147k/364 of which center is 10$\^$-4/ sec/10$\^$5/ sec respectively at room temperature and also obtained dielctric loss factor at the range of 10$\^$-7/-10$\^$5/Hz. It seems that low temperature peak is local dispersion and high temperature peak have a relation to dielectric transition of the material.

Measurements of OH chemiluminescence in an atmospheric pressure, laboratory-scale dump combustor at equivalence ratios ranging from 0.63 to 0.89 were reported. The signal from the first electronically excited state of OH to ground state was detected through a band-pass filter with an ICCD. The objectives of this study are two: One is to see the effects of equivalence ratio on global heat release rate and local Rayleigh index distribution. To get the local Rayleigh index distribution, the line-of-sight images were inverted by tomographic method, such as Abel do-convolution. Another aim is to investigate the validity of using OH chemiluminescence acquired with an ICCD as a qualitative measure of local heat release. For constant inlet velocity and temperature, the overall intensities of OH emission acquired at different equivalence ratio showed periodic and higher value at high equivalence ratio. OH intensity averaged over one period of pressure increased exponentially with equivalence ratio. Local Rayleigh index distribution clearly showed the region of amplifying or damping the combustion instability as equivalence ratio increased. It could provide an information/insights on active control such as secondary fuel injection. Finally, local heat release rate derived from reconstructed OH images were presented fur typical locations.
